The National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Chief Victor Oye, on Monday said steps were being taken to reconcile and bring back aggrieved members of the party.

He said he had reached out to such members with a view to making the party formidable for the November 18 governorship election in Anambra State.

Asked whether one of those the party had reached out to was a former governor of the state, Mr. Peter Obi, who dumped APGA for the Peoples Democratic Party in 2014, Oye said he had not seen any resignation letter from Obi.

He said, “I’m talking to you as the National Chairman of APGA. Obi is still our member. I have not seen any resignation letter from APGA from Obi.”

Oye, however, said at some point, Obi was aggrieved, but that the party had  been  talking  with him for reconciliation.

He expressed confidence that Obi would be back to APGA .

He said, “In the first place, he did not leave the party. I am the national chairman of the party and I did not receive any letter from him saying he was leaving. I hold him by his words because he had always said that he would never leave APGA until he quits politics.

“He is still in politics today, and that means he is still in APGA. He is a very important member of our party, and we are talking with him, and very soon, you will see him in APGA.”

On whether Obi would support Governor Willie Obiano’s re-election despite the frosty relationship between the two, Oye said Obi had no option but to support Obiano.

He said, “Forget what you hear, this is politics. Obi laid the foundation of this state, and Obiano is building the super structures on that foundation. You cannot see the foundation, but you can see the structure, but the structure would not be there if the foundation was not laid, and that foundation was laid by Obi.

“He has no other option but to support the man who is building on a foundation he laid. So, Obi will support Obiano’s re-election.”

The second runway for the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, will be ready before the end of the current administration in 2019, the Federal Government has said.

It said the construction of a second runway at the airport was on course, as preliminary consultations were ongoing.

Operators in the aviation sector, as well as other stakeholders, have called on the government to construct a second runway at the NAIA, especially after the airport was closed for several weeks earlier this year.

The Federal Government had on March 8, 2017, shut the Abuja airport for six weeks to repair its 3.6-kilometre runway and consequently diverted flights from the NAIA to the Kaduna International Airport.

To address the concerns about another runway for the airport, the Minister of State for Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, explained that the fund needed for the construction of the facility was budgeted in the 2017 Appropriation Bill.

He noted that the 2018 budget would also make provision for the runway.

Sirika stated this when members of the Joint Aviation Trade Unions and Professional Associations Forum, a body comprising heads of different unions in the sector, visited him in his office in Abuja on Monday.

The minister, according to a statement by the ministry, informed his guests that based on the government’s thinking, the runway would be constructed before the expiration of the present administration’s term in May 2019.

He said the Federal Government had also put in place a policy to regulate the engagement of expatriates in the sector.

He noted that with the policy, expatriates would only be engaged in areas where there were no licensed Nigerian professionals.

Sirika told the union members that there was no reason why Nigeria could not fix its aviation sector, particularly now that the industry was headed by seasoned aviators.

He said the establishment of a national carrier was on course, adding that as soon as the necessary approvals were obtained, the deal would be done.

The Chairman, Joint Aviation Trade Unions and Professional Associations Forum, Safiyanu Mohammed, said the visit was aimed at working with the government to see how best to fix and move the sector forward.

He said the unions also wanted to know the vision of the minister on how the government planned to improve airports in Nigeria and to present the group’s observations concerning concession agreements in the sector.

A man who attacked, r*ped and murdered a little girl, has himself been killed in an unbelievably brutal manner afterwards.

Muhammad al-Maghrabi, a 41-year-old man who r*ped and killed a three-year-old girl has been executed with a machine gun.

According to Metro UK, the man was killed as he lay on the floor following his conviction over the death of the little girl, Rana Yahya Al-Matari.

His execution, at point blank range, was broadcast on live TV across Yemen.

He was shot dead in front of a crowd of thousands of people, including many who recorded what happened on their mobile phones, in the capital city of Sanaa.

“Lagos will become the third largest economy before I take my boarding pass,” Obasanjo said.

Obasanjo also said that Africa is not a poor continent, adding that the continent is only poor by choice.

“Africa is poorly managed,” he said, adding that, “We are poor by choice (and) we will also get out of that poverty by choice.”

Two fake blind beggars have been arrested by the policemen attached to the Imo State University, Owerri. Their arrest followed intelligence information given to the police by some students of the institution.

A student leader, Chidi Onyeji, told Southern City News that the fake blind men were apprehended by the police at the main gate of the varsity. He said, “The policemen have uncovered swindle activities of a particular group who devise unlawful means to attract sympathy and rip off kind-hearted students of their hard-earned money under the pretext of being blind.”

According to Onyeji, luck ran out on the suspects when one of the policemen called one of the beggars, and on approaching, the cop slapped him and asked him to open his eyes.

He explained that upon interrogation, the two fake blind persons confessed to the crime, saying they took to the crime to make ends meet because they were unemployed.

The suspects had been transferred to the state Police Command in Owerri, where they were being interrogated.

Sequel to intelligence reports, it was discovered that one Chinwendu Njoku got pregnant; and was suddenly found not pregnant again. The Police arrested and interrogated her only to discover that she was actually the lady that gave birth to the baby and dumped him in the bush. Either by divine intervention or stroke of luck, the young man responsible for the pregnancy showed up at the police Division.

On interrogation by the CP personally, it was discovered that the young man indicated interest to marry the lady but her family turned him down because he was unemployed and does not have a “family name”. On learning about this, CP Garba Baba UMAR psc was depressed and shocked to the marrow. He wondered why somebody can take such rash decision while many are looking for the fruit of the womb for donkey years.

After counselling the duo and without hesitation, he offered a huge amount of money for the rehabilitation of the young man and lady. He said the man should use the cash to start up a business while the lady should acquire any skill of her choice to earn a living for the child and herself.

CP UMAR also made provision for the care of the new born baby and announced automatic scholarship for the baby child while volunteering for his training too. The Commissioner of Police reunited the couple and handed over the baby to them. He also directed the DPO to keep an eye on the family and ensure that the money is used judiciously.

The beneficiaries were so stunned by the benevolence of the CP and shed tears of joy as they appreciated and prayed for him and his family.

Veteran Nollywood actor and comedian Chiwetalu Agu has in a video spoken against Northerners for what he termed the oppression of Igbos.

Speaking Igbo in the video, the actor condemned the actions of the Hausa-Fulani people in discriminating against Igbos.

He said about the coalition of Northern youth groups’ notice to Igbos staying in the region to leave in three months:

You the northerners, where were you when Igbos were building hotels and different things. Where were you, people? You people were asleep, busy eating money gotten from Niger Delta and you have the mouth to say Igbo should leave, if it is done that way, Hunger will kill you people.

He also compared the Igbos to the biblical Israelites, saying:

If you want to know who you are oppressing, compare us to the Israelites. We are the people of God. Pharaoh was begged to leave the Israelites to go, Pharaoh refused, what happened later?

President Muhammadu Buhari has declared that he will not resign as the country’s leader despite mounting pressure from some Nigerians. 

Buhari said his actions have not gone contrary to the country’s constitution. The president spoke yesterday against the backdrop of a protest in Abuja over his continued stay in London. 

The protesters led by Charles Oputa a.k a Charley Boy marched from the Unity Fountain to the Presidential Villa, where they demanded that Buhari should either return to the country and resume duties or resign immediately.

“The President has handed over power to the vice president as required by the constitution and the vice president is carrying out the affairs of this country. 

He is undertaking activities of government in line with the constitution in a way that the president himself has given words of commendation. 
So, the president has not breached any law. What he has done is perfectly in line with the constitution and people are looking for things to say. I think they should do their research very well, SSA to the President on Media and Publicity said”.

A Saudi court on Wednesday sentenced a citizen to 13 years in jail for promoting Hezbollah in his Friday sermons, Sabq local online news has reported.

The court ruled that the convict in his sermons criticised Gulf and Arab countries as well as the domestic and foreign policies of Saudi Arabia.

It added that the convict, through his sermons preached against Saudi law which banned Friday sermons capable of inciting the people against the policies of the state.

The convict was also accused of posting his sermons on his website.

Besides the sentence, the court ordered that the website be shut down and imposed 13 years travel ban on the convict after serving his penalty.
