Two weeks ago, heavy rainfall caused serious flooding in areas on the Island in Lagos and Mainland residents took to social media, especially twitter, to mock those living there over the sad condition of their houses and streets.

On Saturday, rain fell heavily on the mainland and there was also flooding in some areas, mainly due to the blocked drainage system

OAP Freeze didn’t miss the chance to mock mainland residents who laughed at the condition of the Island a while back.

Law School Expels UI Graduate After Protesting Seat Reservation (Pictured) by Success23(f) : 7:13 pm On Jul 24

The Nigerian Law School, Bwari, Abuja, has expelled a student, Kayode Bello, after he allegedly had an argument with a fellow student, identified simply as Chidima, over seat reservation in a lecture room.

The graduate of University of Ibadan, Oyo State, was reportedly bundled out of the school’s library by law school officials and policemen attached to the Bwari Police Station on the day he was expelled.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Bello’s issue with the school management started shortly after he gained admission into the institution in November 2016.

It was gathered that he complained to the Secretary to the Council of Legal Education, Mrs. Elizabeth Max-Uba, over the leakage of the sewage pipe in his room’s toilet.

He said he also reported to the secretary that the water system in rooms in the hostel was not functioning, adding that his complaints were not attended to.

The 34-year-old told Punch that the events that led to his expulsion started on March 15, 2017, when he went to the class for a morning lecture.

“The class is usually overcrowded. There are no enough chairs in the lecture room and we have issues over seat reservation. At a point, the Head Marshal, Mr. Akinyemi, announced publicly that there should not be seat reservation again because it was causing problems.
“That day, I met Chidima and other persons sitting on some chairs. There was a book on a vacant chair. As I made to sit on the vacant chair, Chidima said she was keeping the seat for a student. I said I would leave when the person came.
“When the lady came 20 minutes later, Chidima angrily told me to vacate the seat. I told her that her approach was wrong. In the process, a marshal came and took both of us to Mr. Akinyemi’s office. He asked me to look for another seat. I made him to realise that he was the one that gave an order on seat reservation, but he ignored me.
“I went to report the matter to the school’s Chief Security Officer, Mr. Ogunboyan, but he was not in the office. I called him on the telephone and he asked me to be patient, saying he would address it when he came back.”

Bello said the CSO took him to Akinyemi later that day and the Head Marshal complained that he (Bello) was rude.

“I said I was not rude, but was trying to let him (Akinyemi) realise that he didn’t do justice to the matter brought before him,” he added.

Bello said both officials flared up at that point and Akinyemi threatened him with a query. He stated that he immediately submitted a petition on the issue at the secretary’s office, adding that she did not acknowledge it.

He said he also sent the same petition to the email of the Nigerian Law School without getting a reply.

He said Akinyemi announced the query in the class the following day and gave him a copy, which he replied to.

“I also made my response known to the class. He issued the query and signed it on behalf of the Dean of Students’ Affairs, which is wrong,” Bello said.

He said the officials suddenly turned the matter against him, accusing him of inciting students against the school management, adding that his room was inspected on March 20, but nothing incriminating was found.

Bello explained that the Students’ Representative Council was also influenced to issue a disclaimer against him.

“On March 21, the CSO and the Head of Academic Affairs, Mr. Osamolu, came to my room in the midnight and forcefully evicted me. I paid over N300,000 as school fee, of which N60,000 was for hostel accommodation. They handed me over to policemen at the school’s police post. When I explained what happened to a policeman, he was surprised. He gave me a space to pass the night.
“When I returned to the hostel the following day, I met the door of my room broken, while my bed had been taken away. I reported at the Bwari Police Station, but a policewoman I met there requested money to buy a case file, which I declined to provide.
“My lawyer wrote to the secretary about my victimisation, but she didn’t reply. I also petitioned the Public Complaints Commission, which wrote to the Nigerian Law School.
“The SRC later withdrew the disclaimer privately, but they had endangered my life and allowed the school management to capitalise on it. I said the SRC chairman should resign as a punitive measure for the disclaimer, while a fresh committee be set up to look into my case. They said it was not possible for the chairman to resign.”

He said he kept sleeping in the open room until they went for externship (attachment to law firms and courts) in April 24, adding that his application for hostel accommodation during the programme was rejected by the school.

He said, “We returned from externship on July 12. I was in the library on July 17 preparing for Portfolio Assessment which started the next day when the CSO led some people to give me a letter of expulsion to sign. I rejected it. They called for reinforcement and I was dragged out of the library and taken to the Bwari Police Station, where I had earlier lodged a complaint against the school without any action.
“They said they would charge me to court; I was happy. I was detained. They later released me after I signed an undertaking that there would be peace.”

The representative of UI graduates in the SRC, Patrick Oyakhare, confirmed that the SRC regretted issuing the disclaimer.
“I met with Kayode (Bello) to tell me what he wanted. He said the committee that sat on his matter should be reconstituted while the chairman should resign. I presented it at a meeting. The first condition was agreed to, but it is not possible for the chairman to resign. It is only the school that can comment on his expulsion,” he added.

Some students, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Bello was expelled because the school authorities saw him as a threat.

A student said, “Kayode is 100 per cent right about his complaints over the poor state of the facilities in the school. All the students are aware, but no one has the confidence to challenge the school. It is just unfortunate that Nigeria is a country where it is difficult to fight an institution and win.”

Asked what actually led to Bello’s expulsion, the Secretary, Max-Uba, said the management would issue a statement on the issue on Monday (today).

Sex workers want govt to legalise prostitution by Success23(f) : 3:58 pm On Jul 27

Eniola Akinkuotu,  Abuja

The Nigerian Sex Workers Association has called on the Federal Government to decriminalise prostitution, saying such would curb the spread of HIV.

The association added that HIV infection had continued to increase because the government treated prostitution as a crime.

It stated that law enforcement agents, especially the police, consequently harassed sex workers and sometimes demand sex without using condoms.

The National Coordinator of the association, Amaka Enemo, said this in Abuja on Wednesday during an interview with journalists at the presentation of  a report titled, ‘Understanding the High Risk of Urban Sexual Networks in Nigeria.’

Enemo was said to have played an active role in gathering information for the report, which was compiled by the National Agency for the Control of AIDS, the University of Manitoba, United States, and the World Bank.

She said, “Sex workers face violence, especially from their clients and law enforcement agents. Sex work is seen as a crime and the police raid streets and brothels to arrest sex workers. They collect money and if the girl cannot pay money, she will have to give sex to the policemen. If the law enforcer does not want to use condom, the sex worker has to agree and this is why HIV is on the increase.

“So, in this study, all the sex workers we interacted with said their biggest trouble was law enforcers.”

The 36-year-old said several studies had shown that countries where prostitution is not illegal had lower cases of sexually transmitted diseases, while Nigeria, where it is illegal, had one of the highest rates of HIV in the world.

She said sex work should be made legal, and government should not saddle sex workers with the responsibility of paying tax.

Enemo said, “When I visited Amsterdam (Holland), I was able to visit the red light district where sex workers work because prostitution is legal there. I have also visited New Zealand where they have decriminalised sex work.

“When you decriminalise it, there will be less exploitation of sex workers and the violence will reduce.”

Emeno said since HIV is a communicable disease and had no cure, sex workers should be given proper treatment and not victimised.

She said an infected sex worker could directly or indirectly infect as many as 100 people, adding that the government must not hound, but partner them.

Emeno added, “Decriminalise the work so that all of us will be healthy. It might interest you to know that Nigeria has the second highest risk of HIV worldwide and we are hoping to get to zero before 2030.

“How can it end when the drivers of the epidemic are being criminalised?”

In his remarks, the Director, Strategic Knowledge Management, NACA, Dr Kayode Ogungbemi, said sex workers must be taken seriously since married men also patronised them.

He said the message of use of protection must also be taken to mega stores and other places where sexual relationships began.

Ogungbemi added, “This report looks at the history of casual sex, transactional sex and commercial sex. If we do not reach these women, the infection will continue to spread. So, we must teach these women the use of condoms and going for HIV tests because if we don’t do that, they will continue to spread it. Even married people patronise them.”

Also speaking, the Country Coordinator, Centre for Global Public Health, University of Manitoba, Dr. Kalada Green, said the exercise, which was funded by the World Bank, was done in order to improve the efficiency of HIV prevention methods.

Newly Promoted Army Officer, Nine Others Killed By Boko Haram by Success23(f) : 7:12 pm On Jul 27

Medawa, a Nigerian Army Lieutenant who would have become Captain on Thursday, has been killed in Sambisa forest in the “clearance” operation declared days ago by the Chief of Army Staff, Yusuf Buratai.

General Buratai gave his men 40 days to capture Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, dead or alive, a task that has not been accomplished in about seven years.

The late Lt. Medawa, who was due to be decorated as Captain on Thursday, served at the Brigade of Guards in Abuja before his posting to the war theater in Borno. He was leading troops of the Nigerian Army 5 Brigade when his unit came under heavy artillery fire from the terrorists.

According to a military source, Medawa and nine other soldiers were killed in the ensuing battle, while several others are still missing.

Quincy Jones wins $9.4m in damages from Michael Jackson’s estate by Success23(f) : 7:12 pm On Jul 27

Quincy Jones, the legendary producer behind Michael Jackson’s top hits, on Wednesday won $9.4 million in damages from the late superstar’s estate over posthumous works.

A jury in Los Angeles sided with the 84-year-old producer but gave him only part of the $30 million he was seeking.

Jones has arranged songs for some of the biggest names in music including Jackson, producing his “Thriller” in 1982 which remains the top-selling album of all time.

The producer filed suit over the use of songs in “This Is It” — a 2009 documentary about Jackson’s rehearsals for a series of concerts in London that ultimately were never to be due to the star’s sudden death — as well as two Cirque du Soleil circus shows.

Jackson sued MJJ Productions Inc., one of the companies that ran the late King of Pop’s estate, in 2013.

Jones said he had no quarrel with Jackson personally but that he had reached contracts in 1978 and 1985 that gave him the first priority to Jackson’s music, including maintaining the right to be the first to mix original recordings.

“Although this judgment is not the full amount that I was seeking, I am very grateful that the jury decided in our favour in this matter,” Jones said in a statement.

“I view it not only as a victory for myself personally but for artists’ rights overall,” he said.

Defense lawyer Zia Modabber had rejected Jones’ arguments, saying that the original recordings belonged to Jackson alone.

“This is a grab for money that Mr. Jones isn’t entitled to,” Modabber said.

Another lawyer for MJJ Productions, Howard Weitzman, earlier told music magazine Billboard that the estate would likely appeal if Jones won a major sum.

Jackson’s estate has been trying to monetize his legacy since his death but its success has been uneven, with the family notably giving up on preserving the late King of Pop’s Neverland ranch.

(Episode 4) Silhouettes Cast Against The Blue Sky… Campus Life Experience! by Success23(f) : 6:43 am On Jul 28

Few weeks later, the school reopened and everywhere was somewhat busy. Freshers were busy with clearance with backpacks strapped to their backs and files in hands. However, old students were busy with course registration and some other necessary clearance.

Liz: “Wow, we are no longer freshers”. Liz said to Feyi, after they had been allocated to another block, but not as roommates.

Feyi: “I can’t imagine a life without you in a room, Liz”. She replied, feeling sad.

Liz: “We’re just one block away, Feyi, besides we’re in the same class, so no worries”. She said, slapping her playfully on the arm

Feyi: “I can’t wait for the results to be out.” She said; feeling elated again.

Liz: “Me too”. She replied.

They were both on their way to the bank along the school bursary. Shortly afterwards, the duo left for their various rooms.

****

The new session commenced immediately with lectures upon lectures. No room for indolence in the college of medicine.  The second semester result was released in time.  Feyi and Liz ran down to the notice board when the news was broken to them by Amaka.

Amaka: “Feyi, Liz, the results are out.” She said; on seeing the both of them.

Liz: “Wow! We made it, no Ds, no Es, no Carry Overs either. I am so grateful to God. Despite all the dreads, stress, threats and frights, we scaled through.  This deserves a testimony on Sunday, Feyi”.  She said; excitedly.

After they had finished jubilating in front of the notice board, both of them left for lectures. During a break in lectures, they both stepped out to get some air.

Jason: “Hey beautiful!” he said; from a distance, calling out to Liz, seated at her favorite spot; the baobab tree in front of the departmental library. “I heard your results are out, how was yours?” he added.

Liz:” Yes! I made it, no carry over”. She replied, excitedly. “Okay, how about yours?” she continued, moving a little, so he could sit down.

Jason: “you know I am now in 600 level, so we are not like you guys. I’m already doing my clinical training”. He replied; smugly.

Liz: “Oh! I see”. She replied.

Jason:  “so what’s up with you lately? If you need anything don’t hesitate to let me know dear”. He said.

Liz:  “Okay sir!” she replied, smiling.

Jason: “When next are we going to see, since I am in the clinical students’ hostel?” he asked

Liz:” I don’t know o.” she replied, playing with her hair.

Jason sighed then held Liz’s hand.

Liz: “Can I leave now?” she asked, feeling awkward. She was not used to holding hands with guys in public.

Jason: “Okay, when next are we going to see?” he asked again.

Liz: “I am not so sure, I am always busy”. She replied, staring at the ground.

****

Liz went back to the lecture theatre to get a material from a course mate and headed to hostel. Feyi screamed Liz’s name as she sighted her from her room upstairs. Liz walked up to block A.

Feyi: “Liz! Liz! You’re just coming back from class?” she asked

Liz:  “Yes!” she replied.

Feyi:  “Hmmmm, jackophyte, exams never near, you don start to dey sleep for library, na you o“. she replied.

Liz didn’t utter a word; she was too tired to speak. Rather, she stood, smiling, watching her bosom friend talking dramatically.

Feyi: “That’s by the way; I called to know your view regarding what I discussed with you”. She said.

Liz: “We discussed so many things, which of them?” she asked, curious.

Feyi: “Fellowship!” she shouted.

Liz: “Oh!”  She said, a smile escaping from the corner of her mouth. “Hmmmm, Feyi, you’re so dogged. You don’t let go”. She added

Feyi: “I am just inviting you to the fellowship, since you’re yet to conclude on what fellowship to join on campus”. She said, continuing determinedly.

Liz: “Okay, no probs, I will join yours.  I hope that settles it?” she asked; too tired to argue.

Feyi clapped her hands and hugged her excitedly.

Feyi: “Okay that means we’ll be in service together on Sunday?” she said.

Liz: “Yes o….Can I leave now?” she asked her friend; stretching her right hand to the direction of her room.

Feyi: “Yes, you can. I can see you’re tired, go and relax. Pele”. She said.

****

Not long after the invitation, Liz became a full member of the fellowship. This however, fostered her frequently seeing Jason, as he’s equally a member of the fellowship. Jason called on Liz one Thursday night after the midweek evening service. They exchanged pleasantries.

Jason: “Can we talk?” he asked; looking at her intently.

Liz: “Yeah, sure. I’m listening”. She replied.

Jason: “Firstly, I’d like to tell it to your face, that I like you”. He said, calmly.

Liz felt an abrupt tingling in her tummy as she heard this. She felt all the blood rush to her head. She felt that feeling one has inside that is unexplainable, leaving one in a state of confusion, that makes one want to have a seat or hold onto something to avoid falling if one was standing.  She gathered herself together to avoid some embarrassing herself before the guy, whom every lady desired to have on campus.

Jason “For some time now, I have been observing you.  To be candid, I don’t want to sugarcoat anything for you. I am not some church guy that will walk up to a lady to tell her he had a dream or the Lord showed him in the dream his wife to be, or whom he’s supposed to court. Like I said earlier, I like you. So, I would like you be my girlfriend?” he continued, ignoring Liz’s quietness.

Liz remained dumbfounded, silent, looking down like a teenager who is being scolded for wrongdoing.  She heaved a sigh when Jason was done talking, and looked up.

Liz: “Can you give me some time to think about it?” she asked.

Jason:” Okay. but don’t keep me waiting young lady. You know we will look great together. Besides I can see that you like me too”. He replied, smugly

Liz became emotionally unstable as she heard this. She shivered as the tiny hairs on her arms stood up and goose bumps climbed all over her. She bade him goodnight and they headed in opposite directions.

Liz couldn’t fathom how she felt that night. She became totally disturbed by Jason’s wooing. She silently walked to her room, climbed her bunk bed and went straight to bed. However, she struggled to sleep. Thousands of thoughts ran through her mind faster than the speed of light. She stared at the ceiling, far into the night. “I am eventually convinced that everything is alright with me. I am okay”. She thought to herself. She had always had this thought that something was wrong with her, as no guy had ever walked up to her since she got to the university.

Liz: “I think I like him, but I am afraid. Abeg, I am old enough.  I can handle things myself, que sara sara”. She said out loud.

Question:  Hmmmmm, this potion is getting sweeter. What do you think Liz’s response will be?

Village heads order rape of 16-year-old girl, as punishment for rape committed by her brother by Success23(f) : 2:56 pm On Jul 28

Fourteen members of a Pakistani village council have been arrested for ordering the rape of a teenage girl as punishment for a rape committed by her brother, police said Wednesday.

The incident occurred earlier this month in the neighbourhood of Raja Ram in Muzaffarabad, a suburb of the central city of Multan, investigators told AFP.

“A jirga (village council) had ordered the rape of a 16-year-old girl as punishment, as her brother had raped a 12-year-old,” said Allah Baksh, a local police official.

He said the village council was approached by a man who complained that his 12-year-old sister had been raped by their cousin.

The council then ordered the complainant to rape the sister of the accused in return, Baksh said — an order which was duly carried out.

The allegations were confirmed by Rashid Taheem, the police officer heading the investigation.

“Both the parties had filed cases of rape against each other at the local police station after the incident that happened last week,” he told AFP.

“We have arrested 14 people of the village council so far,” he said, adding that the “main accused” — the man who raped the 12-year-old — was still at large.

Jirgas, or village councils formed of local elders, are a traditional means of settling disputes in Pakistan’s rural areas, where courts and lawyers are not always accessible or trusted.

But such councils are illegal and have been under fire for their controversial decisions, especially regarding women.

A jirga was involved in one of South Asia’s most infamous cases of sexual violence against women when, in 2002, it ordered the gang rape of a woman called Mukhtar Mai after her brother was falsely accused of rape.

Mai made the unusual decision to defy her rapists and take them to court. Her attackers walked free but she went on to become a high-profile women’s rights activist.

Her story inspired an opera, “Thumbprint”, which opened in New York in 2014 and premiered in Los Angeles last month.

5 Keys For Making Prayer A Habit by Success23(f) : 7:07 pm On Jul 29

Prayer is hard work. It’s not something that comes naturally.

We go about our days, engaged in the home or workplace, distracted by good things that would keep us from prayer if we let them. Our hearts are prone to wander from God in self-reliance toward temporary pleasures, rather than running to him in dependence for the lasting joy and satisfaction only he can provide.

No relationship will flourish without intention — and this takes work!
Perhaps you feel your need for communion with God, and you want to grow in forming a habit of prayer, but you don’t know where to start…

Five Keys for Making Prayer a Habit
Maybe prayer seems daunting, like a high mountain to climb; or perhaps the pace of your day doesn’t seem to allow for this time. Yet, the growth of any relationship won’t fall into our laps; we need to be intentional, trusting God will meet and help us in this time of sought communion.

So here’s a start! The following are five keys to help you form a habit of prayer:

1. Choose it.
Forming any habit requires action. Unless I choose to rebuild my strength through physical therapy exercises, it won’t happen. Unless I choose to show up on time by leaving early, it won’t happen. Similarly, we won’t pray unless we choose to pray, despite the obstacles (and there are always obstacles!).

So choose to pray. Choose a location. Choose a time of day that works best. Choose a context that will become familiar over time. Our living room couch is my chosen, consistent spot, the place I go each morning to read my Bible and pray.

Of course, certain times require flexibility in our communion with God—and there’s grace for these seasons! A newborn baby, a relocation, a new job and schedule, a decline in health—these circumstances may change our context for prayer, but they needn’t change our choice to pray. We press on, no matter the season, and we choose prayer by the strength God supplies.

2. Ask God for help.
Because prayer doesn’t come naturally, our hearts are wayward, and our circumstances change, we desperately need God to help us pray—and this means we need him to transform our hearts, the seat of our deepest desires. If prayer is merely something we add to our “spiritual checklist,” a joyless obligation, then we’ll pray for all the wrong reasons and never be transformed. But if God were to change our hearts, then we’d yearn for prayer because we first and foremost desire him.

So we ask God for help! We ask him to change our fickle, self-interested, apathetic, and easily distracted hearts. John Piper says,

Too many of us are passive when it comes to our spiritual affections. We are practical atheists. We think there is nothing we can do... This is not the way the psalmists thought or acted. It is not the way the great saints of church history have acted either. Life is war. And the main battles are fought at the level of desires, not deeds.

If you’ve been discouraged by your apathy toward prayer, hear this good news: Jesus lived and died and resurrected so your heart would be made new and your desires changed! He gave his life for your apathy and wayward desires, bearing your sin, and now he lives to intercede for you when you ask God to change your heart. So ask for his help today. He delights to give it.

3. Read your Bible.
God has graciously spoken to us through his precious Word, and we can open our Bibles to hear from him each day. What an incredible thing, to hear from the God of the universe through words and phrases and sentences and chapters and books! What a wonder that the almighty, holy God would speak to undeserving, sinful humans like us.

If prayer is responding to God’s words (he speaks; we listen, consider, and respond), then before prayer can become a habit, we need Scripture reading to become a habit. As in the last point, we can ask God for his help where Bible reading is concerned: God, give me the desire to hear from you in your Word!

Our prayers will also be more focused and clear when they’re rooted in biblical truths we know we can trust because God, himself, has said so.2 The more we read our Bibles, the more inclined our hearts will be to pray in response (Psalm 119:36).

4. Establish a pattern.
Prayer can feel overwhelming. How do I know where to begin?, we ask. Choosing patterns for prayer has helped me pray more consistently and with greater intentionality.

Here are some ideas to get you started:
Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication (ACTS)
The Lord’s Prayer (see Matthew 6:9-13)
Word-centered prayer (pray through a Scripture passage, verse by verse)
Concentric circles (start with self and move outward to family, friends, church, local, global, etc.)
Daily themes (eg. Ministry on Mondays, Unbelievers on Tuesdays, Friends on Wednesdays, Missions/Evangelism on Thursdays, Work/Coworkers on Fridays, etc.)
John Piper’s I.O.U.S. (a helpful prayer pattern for Bible reading)
Small group prayer
Family prayer
Church/corporate prayer.

5. Ask for accountability.
Is anyone currently asking you about your prayer life? If you want to make prayer a habit, ask a trusted, believing friend to hold you accountable by checking in with you on a weekly basis: “How has your prayer time been? How can I pray for you in that regard?” See if you might hold them accountable as well.

You’re Never Too Late
At this point, some of you might be feeling discouraged because you haven’t sought to make a habit of prayer. Friends, because of Christ, you can lift your drooping heads and strengthen your weak knees—it’s never too late to start! God delights to provide for us the desire, motivation, and ability to commune with him in prayer, and he has secured this high privilege for you to draw near through the sacrifice of his Son.

You’re never too late, nor is God ever too far away. Prayer is a gift and, through his strength, it can become a habit for you.

Transfer News!! French Side Monaco Rejects Arsenal’s Third For This Star Player (Pictured) by Success23(f) : 7:13 pm On Jul 29

Arsenal have seen a third offer for Monaco winger, Thomas Lemar, rejected.

Lemar is Arsene Wenger’s No1 target following the arrival of Alexandre Lacazette, but the Ligue 1 champions are reluctant to allow the France international leave.

After a second bid of €45million was rejected earlier this week, French outfit, L’Equipe, reports that a third €50million offer has also been turned down.

This comes after Monaco vice-president, Vadim Vasilyev, insisted the player will be staying at the Principality .

“Fabinho and [Thomas] Lemar are essential players, they will stay with us,” he said on Wednesday.

“We have kept all of the key players we intended to keep.”

Monaco have reportedly set an £80million price tag on the 21-year-old.

I’m not going anywhere, I’m not dying, 93-year-old President Mugabe assures supporters by Success23(f) : 4:55 am On Jul 30

President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe on Saturday said he was neither stepping down nor dying and that there was no one with his political stature who could immediately take over from him.

The 93-year-old leader has been in charge in the former British colony since independence in 1980.

His health is closely watched by Zimbabweans who fear the country could face chaos if he dies without anointing a successor.

Mugabe told tens of thousands of supporters at a rally in the town of Chinhoyi, in his home province, that doctors were recently surprised by his “strong bone system.”

He has traveled to Singapore three times this year for what officials say is routine medical treatment.

“There is the issue that the president is going. I am not going,” Mugabe told supporters on the grounds of a local university, 100 km west of the capital Harare.

“The president is dying. I am not dying. I will have an ailment here and there but body-wise, all my internal organs … very firm, very strong,” Mugabe said as he leant on the lectern.

Mugabe had walked onto the stage slowly but without assistance.

The issue of who will succeed Mugabe has deeply divided the ruling party, with two factions supporting Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Mugabe’s wife, Grace.

On Thursday, Grace challenged Mugabe to name his preferred successor, to end divisions over the future leadership of ZANU-PF.

She repeated the call on Saturday, adding that Mugabe would lead the process to choose his eventual successor.

Mugabe said although some party officials wanted to succeed him, he saw no one among his subordinates with his political clout to keep the party united and fend off a challenge from the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change.

“A new man will not have the same stature and the same acceptance as I have managed to secure for the party over the years,” said Mugabe. (Reuters/NAN)

Arrest lawmakers ignoring invitation, Sagay tells EFCC by Success23(f) : 6:05 pm On Jul 30

LEKE BAIYEWU,  ENIOLA AKINKUOTU and OLALEYE ALUKO

The Chairman, Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN), has asked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to arrest any lawmaker that refused to honour the commission’s invitation when he spoke with SUNDAY PUNCH on Saturday.

The lawmaker representing Anambra North Senatorial District, Senator Stella Oduah, was invited by the EFCC on June 20, but refused to honour the invitation.

It was learnt that she also did not write any letter to the commission stating reasons for not honouring the invitation.

READ: Current Senate, worst in history, says Sagay

Oduah, a source said, was invited over some petitions bordering on the purchase of two armoured BMW vehicles at N255m by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority during her tenure as aviation minister in 2013 and the N9bn contract for the remodelling of some airports.

She had filed a fundamental rights enforcement suit, asking the court to stop the Attorney General of the Federation’s office, the EFCC, and the police from inviting, arresting, investigating or prosecuting her but the court denied her request on October 6, 2016.

Oduah, it was learnt, was emboldened by a Senate resolution three weeks ago in which the senators resolved not to recognise the authority of the acting Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ibrahim Magu until he stepped aside, having been rejected twice by the Senate.

Similarly, the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Leo Ogor, who was invited by the EFCC as part of investigations into the N284bn budget padding, refused to honour the invitation.

The Clerk to the House said in a letter that he was directed by the Speaker of the House, Yakubu Dogara, to tell the EFCC that Ogor or any representative be invited through Dogara.

However, Sagay said the EFCC should not hesitate to arrest anybody who failed to cooperate.

He added that the commission had the power to arrest anyone without an arrest warrant.

He said, “The EFCC is an institution; so, recognising Magu or not is totally irrelevant and until the Supreme Court says Magu is no longer chairman or acting chairman, the Senate cannot refuse to recognise Magu or the EFCC as an institution.

“If the EFCC invites you, you must go. There is no law that says invitation letters must come through the leadership of the National Assembly. The EFCC can inform the leadership as a matter of courtesy but letters should go directly to the person being invited.

“The danger now is that if they keep insisting on this, the EFCC will arrest her (Oduah).

“In fact, the law allows the EFCC to make arrests without a warrant if it has  a reasonable suspicion that the person has committed a crime. So, I think the woman is taking a risk.”

Similarly, a human rights advocate, Femi Falana (SAN), said no one had the right to ignore an EFCC invitation.

Falana said, “The EFCC does not need to go through the leadership of the National Assembly because they are like other members of the public. There is no law that says letters must come through the leadership of the National Assembly.

“Whether you recognise Magu or not, what of the institution and other staff in EFCC? Are they not doing their work? So, if you say you don’t recognise the Inspector General of Police, wouldn’t you recognise the commissioners of police in every state? Doesn’t the EFCC have zonal heads in every state?”
