How Federal Government Intends To Punish Nigerian Celebrities Who Evade Tax by Success23(f) : 1:10 am On Jul 04

The federal government has fine-tuned plans to punish and possibly jail entertainers who evade taxes after the nine-month grace period set out by the recently launched voluntary asset and income declaration scheme (VAIDS).

TheCable learnt that for 15 months, the federal government via various agencies and departments, to include the private sector, has been gathering information on tax compliance of many celebrities and high net worth individuals in the country.

“Highly qualified” agents of the federal ministry of finance have worked with the banks, Nigeria Financial Intelligent Unit (NFIU), bureau de change (BDCs), Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), to monitor the degree of tax compliance of many celebrities and high net worth individuals.

The government has also reviewed land ownership, ownership of exotic cars, yatchs, private jets and other luxurious properties to understand the earnings and assets of many of these persons, relative to their taxes.

Following massive revelations, the government launched VAIDS, a scheme that allows these celebrities and other Nigerians to declare their assets and income, and pay necessary taxes without interest, penalty or investigation.

TheCable understands that the scheme, which will run for nine months, is a grace period for the celebrities to make amends or face the full wrath of the law, which could include jail term of up to five years.

For celebrities with houses in exotic locations worth millions of naira, and a tax record not consistent with the value of the property, the goverment advises that such celebrities “complete form VA1” and clarify sources of income for the house and pay necessary taxes within July 1, 2017 and March 31, 2018.

Celebrities who do not take advantage of the scheme risk “up to five-year imprisonment, get severe extra penalties: up to 100% of the outstanding tax due, a compound interest at 21% per annum.

Nigeria To Announce Policy On Community Policing Soon – Osinbajo by Success23(f) : 12:58 pm On Jul 06

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday said the Federal Government would soon announce new policy on community policing for better service delivery.

Mr. Osinbajo disclosed this at the presentation and launch of a book ‘Law on Prevention and Detection of Crimes by the Police in Nigeria’ in Abuja.

He was represented by his Special Adviser on Political Matters, Babafemi Ojodu.

Mr. Osinbajo said that this would pave the way for modern policing in the country.

“There is no way we can continue with the way we are going with policing now,” he said.

He assured that the establishment of community policing would not take away the powers of the national police.

The acting president said that sitting down in Abuja to police other remote parts of the country was not practicable any longer.

“For us to continue this old way of policing our country, I don’t think it can work and it is not working. We have to look at other parts of the world, how they are doing it,” he said.

He said the fear about decentralisation of the police was not tenable as it could be addressed.

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo said that the establishment of state police would go a long way to check crime and criminality in the country.

“We cannot police the over 180 million Nigerians from Abuja, we cannot run away from state police,” Mr. Obaseki said.

The Chairman of the occasion, former governor of Cross River, Donald Duke, said that one of the pitfalls of the Nigerian society was the near absence of institutional memoir.

“These state organs will have their responsibilities strictly codified and will be made to work alongside and in concert with the national police.

He said that the book had documented over 35 years of service experience and added to the repertoire of scarce institutional knowledge in Nigerian policing.

Mr. Duke, who also supported the establishment of state police, said that it should be made to work alongside the national police.

He disagreed with the author that state police if established would be abused by the states.

“I must say however, that I disagree with the author’s position that state policing, though theoretically ideal, will be abused.

“The fear of abuse can be mitigated by an oversight responsibility or authority by the Commissioner of police in the State or a State Police regulatory commission.

“The decentralisation of policing and presence is the greatest deterrent to crime and allows for better monitoring and intelligence gathering,” he said.

He called for the review of entry levels into the Nigeria Police Force from OND to HND, adding that aptitude tests should be introduced for entry and promotions.

Mr. Duke noted that constant training and retraining was a key requirement for keeping up with the dynamics of a 21st century policing.

He called for the abolition of building barracks for personnel of the force.

“The barracks practice must be abrogated, the police ought to live amongst the people and not amongst themselves,” he said.

The former governor said that the barracks were conceived to protect the expatriate colonial administrators from the rest of the civil population.

He said that the practice of cross postings of police officers should be stopped or at least limited.

“A fellow from Sokoto posted to a command in Ekiti could require at least 6 -12 months to understand his environment and then off he goes again on another posting,” he said.

Earlier, Solomon Arase, a former Inspector-General of Police and author of the book, said that policing in the 21st century must evolve into a knowledge-driven system befitting the country’s democratic values.

He said that the proceeds from the sale of the book would be used to support children of the rank and files and officers of the Nigeria Police Force.

“I have resolved to commit the proceeds of this book toward extending scholarships to children of members of the police force.

“Toward this end, I have already incorporated the Solomon Arase Foundation which will coordinate this initiative on a sustainable basis,” he said.

He said that a law officer within the criminal justice system that lacks professional knowledge was a danger to the justice delivery framework of the country.

Mr. Arase said that an average police officer in modern policing must understand the law to be able to enforce it.

The book reviewer, David Badaiki of Edo State University, said the book identified the absence of transparency and professionalism in operations of the police in the country.

He said that the 332- page book also identified police and community relations as key to crime prevention.

In attendance were five former Inspectors-General of Police, representative of the Inspector-General of Police and representatives of the service chiefs among others.

Queen Elizabeth Appoints First Black Equerry, A War Veteran From Ghana (Photos) by Success23(f) : 9:06 am On Jul 10

The Queen has picked the first black man to hold the role of equerry, one of the most important positions in the royal household. Ghanaian-born Major Nana Kofi Twumasi-Ankrah, an Afghanistan war veteran and officer from the Household Cavalry, is thought to be preparing to take over the role from Wing Commander Sam Fletcher later this year.

Twumasi-Ankrah’s royal career so far has included acting as escort commander at the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall’s wedding in 2011, as well as commanding the Blues and Royals at the Queen’s birthday parade – but his new role will mean he could spend more time at Her Majesty’s side than even her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh.

Since Prince Philip announced that he will be stepping down from public duties this autumn, the new equerry could be the most visible man by the monarch’s side.

Twumasi-Ankrah, 38, told the Sunday Times that as a young child he used to watch the trooping of the colour with fascination.

He said: ‘I would have never imagined that one day I’d command the regiment which I’d fallen in love with.

‘From what I’ve seen in the UK, our cultures really do mix and if I’m not a good example of that I really don’t know what is.’

The paper said the Queen is thought to have picked Twumasi-Ankrah personally from a group of candidates.

The role of equerry, which involves personally assisting the Queen in her public duties, has often been associated with scandal.

Senate Okays Compulsory Treatment Of Gunshot Victims by Success23(f) : 6:58 am On Jul 12

The Senate on Tuesday passed the Compulsory Treatment and Care of Victims of Gunshots Bill, which seeks to compel hospitals to treat persons with gunshot wounds before obtaining police report.

The bill, which was sent to the Senate by the House of Representatives for concurrence, seeks to establish a law that ensures that victims of gunshot wounds receive necessary treatment from medical workers and assistance from security agencies.

The bill also seeks to ensure that every person, including security agents, assist any person with gunshot wounds and ensure that the person is taken to the nearest hospital for treatment.

Additionally, the legislation mandates that no person with gunshot wounds shall be refused immediate and adequate treatment by any hospital in Nigeria, whether or not initial monetary deposit is paid.

President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, in his remarks, noted that not every person shot was a criminal.

He said it was important that a legal framework be put into place to avoid unnecessary loss of lives.

Saraki said, “By the passage of this bill, the Senate has moved to ensure that every hospital in Nigeria, both public and private, must accept to treat victims of gunshot wounds without any clearance from the police.

“What we have done is to ensure that everyone is entitled to medical treatment, irrespective of the cause of the shooting. We should reserve judgment for the criminal justice system, and leave healthcare for the medical professionals.”

Other bills for concurrence passed by the Senate on Tuesday, which will be forwarded to the President for assent include the Animal Health and Husbandry Technologies (Registration, etc) Bill, 2017; Corporate Manslaughter Bill, 2017; National Child Protection and Enforcement Agency Bill, 2017; National Intelligence Agency Pension Board Bill, 2017; Nigerian Academy of Science Bill, 2017; and the National Postgraduate College of Medical Laboratory Science Bill.

"Any Lady My Husband Touches Ends Up With Him... I’m His 33rd Wife" by Success23(f) : 9:40 pm On Jul 14

Benue Police Command on Wednesday arraigned Mrs. Queen Akwaza, wife of a wanted criminal suspect, Terwase Akwaza, over alleged refusal to disclose her husband's whereabouts.

The wide, who appeared before a Makurdi Chief Magistrate’s Court, was charged with criminal conspiracy, screening of armed robbery and kidnapping suspects, and acts of terrorism.

The offences, according to the prosecutor, Mr Hyacinth Gbakor, are punishable under the robbery and firearms acts, laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, and section 1 (2) of Terrorism (Prevention)(Amendment) Act, 2013.

Gabor told the court that on June 15, 2017, a team of Police Joint Task Force Patrol, led by Simon Majinga , arrested 8 persons, who were arraigned in same court, on July 7, for the same crimes.

He said that Mrs. Akwaza was among the suspects, but was still at large, at the time of that arrest.

“The team reported that the suspects were carrying out acts of kidnapping, hostage taking and terrorism. It said that the criminals, led by Akwaza, his wife, Queen, and one Teryima Ihimbe, operated around Katsina-Ala, Kwande, Ukum and Vandeikya areas of Benue."

According to the prosecution, during police investigation, it was also discovered that Mrs. Akwaza was the brain behind the kidnappings and other nefarious acts spearheaded by Zendedoo Tsekaa, one of the suspects arraigned earlier.

Gbakor said that Mrs. Akwaza was arrested on July 7, 2017 and she confessed to the crimes.

Though no plea was taken for want of jurisdiction, the accused person, in a statement to the police, claimed that her husband used charm on her, which hypnotised her into marrying him.

She claimed that her husband had touched her on the buttocks in the market and she followed him immediately afterwards.

“Immediately after that `touch’, I followed him and have been living with him since then. I am his 33rd wife; any woman he touches, ends up with him, ” she stated.

The suspect claimed that the only child from the union, a girl, was killed and buried by the husband.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Isaac Ajim, ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody and adjourned the matter to August 8, 2017. for further mention.

It was also ordered that the prison authority should give her a comprehensive medical check up.

Today's prayer: With my own voice I cry to the LORD;with my own voice I beseech the LORD. Before him I pour out my complaint, tell of my distress in front of him. by Success23(f) : 5:29 pm On Jul 15

Psalms 142

A maskil of David, when he was in the cave.* A prayer.

2With my own voice I cry to the LORD;

with my own voice I beseech the LORD.

3Before him I pour out my complaint,

tell of my distress in front of him.

4When my spirit is faint within me,a

you know my path.b

As I go along this path,

they have hidden a trap for me.c

5I look to my right hand to seed

that there is no one willing to acknowledge me.

My escape has perished;

no one cares for me.

6I cry out to you, LORD,

I say, You are my refuge,e

my portion in the land of the living.f

7Listen to my cry for help,

for I am brought very low.g

Rescue me from my pursuers,

for they are too strong for me.

8Lead my soul from prison,

that I may give thanks to your name.

Then the righteous shall gather around me*

because you have been good to me.

* [Psalm 142] In this lament imploring God for help (Ps 142:2–4), the psalmist tells how enemies have set a trap (Ps 142:4–5), and prays for rescue (Ps 142:6–8). The speaker feels utterly alone (Ps 142:5), exhausted (Ps 142:7), and may even be imprisoned (Ps 142:7). Prison is possibly a metaphor for general distress. The last two verses are the vow of praise, made after receiving an assurance of divine help (Ps 142:7).
