About 14 years after his installation, the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, on Monday appeared in an Ikeja High Court in a suit challenging his emergence as the paramount ruler of Lagos, saying he is the bona fide monarch.

“I am here to justify my appointment, you cannot build something on nothing, it will be broken.

“By native law and customs and by law, I am the bona fide Oba of Lagos,” said Akiolu, who was accompanied to the court by 10 white cap chiefs.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Akiolu’s installation as the Oba of Lagos is being challenged by the duo of princes Adedoyin Adebiyi and Rasheed Modile, who are two members of the Lagos royal family.

Joined as respondents in the suit are the Lagos State governor, the Attorney-General of Lagos State, Prince Babatunde Akitoye and Chief Junaid Eko.

Both Adebiyi and Modile are claiming that Akiolu is not entitled to the throne because he is not a member of a ruling royal family by not being a direct descendant of Oba Ado, the first Oba of Lagos.

According to the claimants, only members of the Ologun Kutere and Akinsemoyin ruling houses are entitled to the throne.

They also alleged that proper customary rules and procedures were not followed when he was appointed as Oba in May 2003.

While being led in evidence by his lawyer, Mr. Adetokunbo Mumuni, Akiolu told the court the procedure he followed before being installed.

“After I made my intention known to my family that I wanted to be Oba of Lagos, I applied for the throne.

“In May 2003, the head of the kingmakers and the then Sole Administrator of Lagos Island Council called at my residence.

“At that time, I was preparing to go to the mosque and I was told that I received a letter from the state government and the State Executive Council.

“The letter accepted my nomination that I have been approved to be a worthy successor of the late Oba of Lagos.

“It will be exactly 14 years tomorrow (May 23, 2003) that my appointment was approved.

“By the grace of Almighty Allah, there is nothing like rotation in the succession to the throne of Oba of Lagos,” Akiolu said.

Before cross-examining Akiolu, lawyer to the claimants, Mr. Babatunde Fashanu (SAN), told the court that for the purpose of the trial, Akiolu should be addressed as the defendant and not as the Oba of Lagos while in court.

“I apply that all referrals to the defendant as the ”Oba of Lagos’ should be expunged from the records of this honourable court.

“Within the walls of this court room, he is a defendant; and when we step out of the court room, I will prostrate and greet him as ‘kabiyesi’ because I am like a son to him,” he said.

Akiolu also told the court that he had a prior relationship with Fashanu’s father when he was working as a lawyer during his early years of legal practice 32 years ago..

“I know your father. I used to carry files for him when we were working together.”

Fashanu’s request to expunge referrals of Akiolu as ‘Oba of Lagos’ was, however, not granted by the court.

In responding to Fashanu’s question as to whether proper customary procedure was followed when he became Oba, Akiolu said he was installed Oba according to the customs of Lagos kingmakers.

“Akiolu is a direct descendant of Oba Ologun Kutere, there is no registered declaration for the throne.

“It is the old customs and the recommendations of the Price Commission, which is over 100 years old that is still valid till today.”

Akiolu also debunked claims that Akiolu royal family was not one of the ruling houses because it was non-existent.

He said: “Despite the letter from Lagos State Government confirming my appointment as Oba and stating that I am from the Akiolu royal family, I want to make it clear that a royal family and ruling house mean the same thing.

“My appointment as the king is the first time in history that kingmakers will be unanimous in selecting an Oba of Lagos.”

Justice A. Candide-Johnson adjourned the case until June 19 for continuation of trial.

WAEC harkens to intervention of Rivers Assembly
...To conduct GCE in Bonny

The Rivers State House of Assembly Committee on Education has extracted confirmation from the West African Examinations Council, WAEC that it will conduct the forthcoming General Certificate Examination, GCE, in Bonny Local Government Area.

Chairman, House Committee on Education, Hon.Doctor Farah Dagogo made this known  shortly after a meeting with the Acting Coordinator of WAEC at the Assembly Complex in Port Harcourt.

He expressed the Committee's commitment to addressing  security and safety concern raised by the WAEC authorities,  assuring that the Rivers State House of Assembly is committed to education for citizens of the state.
 

" It is not as if they ( WAEC) don't want to go back to Bonny, but because of security and safety concern for their personnel.

" However, having allayed their fears, we have been able to extract a commitment that they will go back to Bonny and conduct the GCE.

" I want to assure Rivers people that the Rivers State House of Assembly is committed to education in all its ramifications," he added.

Earlier, the Zonal Coordinator, WAEC Port Harcourt, Gashon Silas Dandak, who had expressed concern about safety and security of its personnel in the Bonny axis, said with those fears allayed by the Chairman, House Committee on Education, Hon. Doctor Farah Dagogo, the Examination body is willing to go ahead with the conduct of the Examinations in Bonny Local Government Area.

" Based on the meeting we have had with the House Committee Chairman on Education, Hon. Doctor Farah Dagogo, I can assure you that the outcome will be communicated to my Head office and everything will be done to restore the (GCE) centre at Bonny.

"The desire of the Council is to conduct exams for every child that is willing to take the examination no matter where the child is located within the country, within the limit of security and safety. So since we have had these assurances, we will return to Bonny Island," he explained.

They had one mindset, to walk off as winners, and that was clear to see. They played the better football and wanted it more. The Chelsea players were hanging their heads but they had an unbelievable season. On the day, not enough players turned up, they did not deserve to win.

Arsenal defender Rob Holding had a fantastic semi-final too and he was under the spotlight, as was Per Mertesacker. Both players put on a huge display. What a performance Mesut Ozil put in too. Man for man, they were much better than Chelsea.

I cannot believe how ordinary Arsenal made Chelsea look. The Premier League champions could not handle Arsenal’s footballing ability in the middle of the pitch. They could not get any rhythm or get on the ball. It was their best display of the season.

Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo said he had never met All Progressives Congress leader, Bola Tinubu, when he was appointed a commissioner in Lagos State.

Osinbajo served as Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Lagos State during Tinubu’s administration.

Osinbajo said: “I did not and I had never met Bola Tinubu before I was appointed Commissioner and that says a lot about the kind of individual that he is. This is the kind of thinking that makes nations great; that is the kind of thinking that would make Nigeria great.

“A type of thinking that considers all of our diverse talents; a kind of thinking that does not allow parochialism; a kind of thinking that does not allow us to say anywhere belongs to only a set of people. That is when our country would be truly great.”

Osinbajo said although he was sympathetic to the course of those craving for a Lagos for only its indigene, but it was now evident that the momentum of history could no longer hold down the elemental force of the State.

“This Lagos is going to be a leader; it would be a leader in expressing the world’s view that the black man is capable of governing not just himself but in leading the world.”

Speaking at the Lagos@50 Anniversary Gala Nite held at the Lagos House, Ikeja, on Saturday, Yemi Osinbajo also said the quest to evolve a greater and more prosperous Nigeria lies in the prosperity of Lagos State, describing the State the commercial capital accounting for over 70 per cent of business in the country.

The Acting President alluded to a recent statistic released by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to the effect that Lagos accounts for 912 out of 914 individual businessmen who pay self-assessed tax of over N10million, saying that the strategic contribution of the State to the country’s economy could not be over-emphasised.

Dignitaries at the event include, Governors of Ogun, Oyo, Gombe, Ekiti, Imo and Edo states; first civilian Governor of Lagos, Alhaji Lateef Jakande; former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu; former Military Governors of Lagos State – Brigadier-General Mobolaji Johnson (Rtd.), Brigadier General Olagunsoye Oyinlola (Rtd.), Brigadier General Buba Marwa (Rtd.), and Rear-Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu (Rtd.); CEO of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote; CEO of Forte Oil, Femi Otedola, Chief Olabode George, Jimi Agbaje, among others.

Besides, the Acting President commended Governor Ambode for his giant strides in the State, saying that the new vistas being opened in the State by the Governor were capable of making Nigeria great.

“And every day that we see the giant strides that Akinwunmi Ambode is making here in Lagos; everyday that we watch television and see the new vistas that he is opening up, it is evident of the fact that surely in this Lagos State lies the seed of the great Nigeria of our dreams,” Osinbajo said.

Forget the whole ‘the power of the Constitution is vested in the VP’ nonsense. Osinbajo cannot take decisive action, regarding Nigeria, even if the VP’s life depends on it…as long as Buhari is President, and sick.

Information minister, Lai Mohammed seems to have run of out ‘lies’. Buhari’s media aides, Femi Adesina and Garba Shehu are confused.

One of them said the President would win if he contests in 2019. Is that what Nigeria needs now? If Buhari loves Nigeria, he should resign and end this confusion.

4. Because…Babachir Lawal

What’s the fate of the suspended Secretary General of the Federation? Is he guilty? Will he be jailed? Is he clean? Osinbajo (should have been EFCC) led a probe into Lawal’s alleged stealing of over N200 million from Nigerian IDPs. Report was due May 8. Check the date. We got no word from the Presidency on what Osinbajo found. And this is happening under a President who is fighting corruption?

5. Buhari will never be greater than Jonathan

If Buhari dies in office (God forbid), he will never be greater than predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan who conceded defeat when he knew he was beat.

Buhari and his handlers must know that it would be bad for our beloved President to go the way of Umar Yar’Adua. We wish Nigerian well. We wish Buhari well too. And that’s why we feel it is in the interest of both parties for the ailing president to step aside immediately.

Lyon forward Alexandre Lacazette will snub offers from Arsenal to join Manchester United this summer, according to reports.

The 26-year-old has been tipped to leave the French Ligue 1 this summer in favour a move abroad with the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and Atletico Madrid all credited with an interest in the striker.

Atleti was believed to be front-runners in the potential deal for Lacazette with reports that the La Liga outfit wants to replace Antoine Griezmann, who was said to be angling for Old Trafford move.

However, United’s plans were scuppered after Atletico Madrid’s transfer ban was upheld, which means the Spanish club cannot sign any player till January 2018.

Reports in French outlet L’Equipe claim that Manchester United have moved ahead of the Gunners in the pursuit of Lacazette, with reports that the player wants to move to the Old Trafford to play Champions League football.

It is understood that Jose Mourinho is keen on landing Lacazette this summer to act as replacement for Zlatan Ibrahimovic who is still uncertain about his future as he recovers from a nasty injury.

The French forward has been a top figure for Lyon in recent seasons, and even finished the last season with 36 goals in 44 appearances.

Singer Brandy rushed to the hospital after being found unconscious on a plane.

Brandy Norwood is currently undergoing medical checkup after she reportedly slumped on a Delta flight.

According to TMZ which broke the story, the Have You Ever singer boarded a Delta flight from Los Angeles to New York but before the plane could pull out of the runway, she lost consciousness.

Other passengers and flight attendants had to rush to help her. TMZ adds that the Delta airline officers contacted the Los Angeles City Fire Department and paramedics who quickly arrived to remove her from the plane.

She however regained consciousness while being treated on the jetway. The singer was later taken to a medical facility. It is unclear why the singer lost consciousness.

Brandy is an American singer, songwriter, record producer and actress. Born into a musical family in McComb, Mississippi and raised in Carson, California, she began her career as a child and performed as a backing vocalist for teen groups. In 1993, Norwood signed with Atlantic Records. The following year, she released her self-titled debut album, which was certified quadruple Platinum in the US, selling six million copies worldwide
