One of Nigeria’s most popular clubs, the Cubana nightclub, Victoria Island, Lagos, was practically empty on Wednesday evening, June 15, 2022, when The PUNCH correspondent visited the place.
However, when Sunday Scoop paid another visit on Friday, June 17, there were more people there.
Recall that popster, Burna Boy’s police escorts were alleged to have shot and wounded two patrons of the club Lawrence and Tolu in the early hours of Wednesday, June 8, 2022.
According to reports, the singer was in the VIP section of the club with three women when he spotted another lady. He was said to have told one of his escorts (Ibrahim) to invite the woman to join him.
However, the lady’s husband, who was by her side, was said to have lambasted the singer, insisting that it was disrespectful for any man to make advances at his wife.
“As things were getting heated, Ibrahim brought out his service pistol and shot multiple times while Burna Boy was laughing,†said a senior policeman.
In the process, 27-year-old Lawrence was shot in the thigh while his friend, Tolu, was hit in the head by a bullet. It was learnt that Burna Boy and his crew then immediately left the scene.
Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police has condemned the incident and called for an investigation into the matter.
However, when Sunday Scoop visited the upscale hangout on Wednesday (a week after the incident), there weren’t many people at the venue. Meanwhile, Wednesdays are usually set aside as the club’s ‘karaoke night’, and it attracts a number of fun seekers. But, during the three hours our correspondent spent at the club, only one patron took part in the karaoke session. She was backed by the host of the event, Shawn Pee.
Also, there were just three tables occupied by guests at about 9:40pm. One of the tables had about six people around it, while another table had three foreigners (two male and one female), and the last table had one person on it.
In a chat with one of the employees at the club, Sunday Scoop was told that the place was scanty because it was a not a regular club day. According to the worker, the club’s regular club days are Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
The host of the karaoke night, who goes by the name Shawn Pee, announced to the few customers seated that he didn’t know what happened on that night to make the place dull, unlike what happened on previous weeks.
However, when Sunday Scoop visited the club again on Friday, the situation was not much different. Though the club continued its usual activities, as of the time our correspondent was there, there weren’t many people there.
Meanwhile, contrary to reports in a section of the media (not Sunday PUNCH) that employees at the club, especially guards, had abandoned their duty posts because they were being arrested by security operatives, Sunday Scoop saw about four bouncers at the club.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has described the National Broadcasting Commission’s (NBC) revocation of 52 broadcast station licences as hasty, IgbereTV reportsÂ
A statement by the NUJ on Friday faulted the move, saying it is ill-timed.
“The decision today by the industry regulator, the National Broadcasting Commission – NBC, to revoke the licenses of 52 broadcast stations nationwide over indebtedness to the Commission was ill-advised,†NUJ chief, National President, Chris Isiguzo, said in a statement.
“The affected stations, according to NBC are said to owe arrears of licence fees amounting to N2.6 billion since 2015.
“Although the Director General of NBC, Malam Balarabe Shehu Ilelah claimed that this development had no political motives, we insist that the action was ill-timed and reckless.
“It should be noted that this wholesale revocation of licences at this critical time of insecurity in the Country appears to be a decision taken without careful prior deliberation, consultation, or counsel.â€

The Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested a serial rapist, who is notorious for molesting and robbing victims, in Abakaliki, the state capital.
IGBERE TV gathered that the suspect, a 19-year-old, whose name was given as Miracle Onwe, is a native of Ezzamgbo in the Ohaukwu Local Government Area of the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chris Anyanwu, stated this during a briefing at the C Division of the police command, on Friday.
Anyanwu said the suspect was arrested after his latest victim raised the alarm after having had carnal knowledge of her in the farmland.
He said, “On 19/08/2022 at about 1700hrs, Ruth Nwizi, a 22 year old girl was farming at Aboffia village in Ebonyi LGA, Ebonyi State, when suddenly a young man came from the rear and pounced on her.
“The suspect later identified as Miracle Onwe, aged 19, an indigene of Ezzamgbo in Ohaukwu LGA, pushed the said Ruth down and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her without her consent,†Mr Anyawu said.
He further said after the act, the suspect robbed her of her Infinix Smart 5 phone valued at #45,000 and took to his heels.

“The DPO C Division Ekumenyi, SP Mustapha Waheed, on getting the information, swung into action with his detectives, cordoned off the area leading to the arrest of the suspect.
“He confessed to the crime. Both victim and suspect were taken to FETHA for post-exposure prophylaxis and laboratory tests respectively. A medical report duly issued by FETHA confirmed that the girl was actually raped.â€
According to him, the suspect will be arraigned for rape and robbery at the appropriate Court in Ebonyi State.
He equally observed that the suspect was in the habit of molesting young girls in the area in the past.
“It is pertinent to mention at this juncture that the suspect had earlier this year attempted to rape a minor whom he forcefully grabbed in the company of two of her mates.
“However, as soon as he stripped the little girl in a bid to defile her, people who were within the vicinity pursued him and he dived into this same river. This has been his modus operandi.â€
The suspect confessed to raping the victim and attempting to rape a minor, earlier in the year.
The victim, Miss Ruth, who narrated her ordeal, demanded that justice be done in the matter. punch
A low cost project quarters at Dutsen Reme, Bakori LGA of Katsina State has been invaded by bandits who abducted four people there.
The development, according to the locals, happened at about 10:00 pm on Friday night while it was raining.
According one Ahmed Ridwan, a resident of Dutsen Reme low cost housing estate, the assailants took advantage of the rainfall and executed their mission unchallenged.
“We were informed through phone calls by villagers around Maska that bandits in large numbers were likely heading to our quarters and we immediately informed the police and military personnel. But when they arrived, the bandits had already abducted four people,†Ridwan said.
Malam Lawal Hamisu Maska, who was absent when the bandits stormed their house, said his co-tenant, Bishir Shitu Sallau, a staff of High Court Funtua, was abducted along with one Safiyanu, a student of College of Education in Abuja. He said, “I was absent when the bandits came and forced their way into the main gate; Bishir and Safiyanu had already hidden their wives in a restroom, so when the bandits broke the door, they asked for the women but could not see them. Therefore, they went away with their husbands.â€
Due to the incident, Hamisu Maska said he will park from his house and the area to relocate forever.
“I am a medical practitioner and it was my job that brought me to Funtua from Maska. This incessant insecurity has left me with no option but to leave for my village,†he said.
At the project quarters, they abducted one Lauratu Jibril and her stepdaughter, after her husband, Malam Jibril, narrowly escaped.
Safarau Sanusi, the younger sister of the victim, said the bandits were at the quarters at 9:45 pm.
“Lauratu is newly married to Jibril and she spent not more than thirty days in the house before her abduction. When the husband sensed danger, he quickly jumped the fence and escaped,†she said.
According to the residents seven days ago the bandits abducted two people at the same low-cost housing estate. Similarly, last week, one Tajuddeen, a tyre repairer, and the wife of one Tanimu Mohammed of Unguwar Maitandama, were abducted.
In a related development, bandits numbering over 20 invaded Kabomo village in Bakori LGA and abducted six people, including two pregnant women.
Salima Lawal, a wife of one of the victims, said the bandits struck at about 12:15am on Tuesday and kidnapped six people in three different houses.
“My co-wife that is nine months pregnant was abducted along with her son, but they later released her around Huguma of Kafur LGA at about 3:00 am after so many kilometres of trekking. They also kidnapped one Alhaji Sa’adu Gulafa, a metal scrap dealer, as well as another pregnant woman with her two children.â€
Lawal added that their husband was in far away Lagos where he was eking out a living when the unfortunate incident happened.

Seun Kuti who begged African youths to stop gambling and engage in ‘Yahoo Yahoo’ instead, stated that greatness does not lie in gambling.

A Nigerian Policewoman has accused her Superior of attacking and brutalizing her for turning down his advances.
She alleged that she was stripped n3ked by one officer, Ajayi Mathew in front of other officers and civilians.
Showing the injuries on her arms and chest, she explained that she didn’t do anything to warrant the assault, save for rejecting his advances.
