Nowadays, testing yourself for HIV means that you and other people can use oral fluid or blood-finger-pricks to discover their status in a private and convenient setting. Results are ready within 20 minutes or less.

Some tests only require a swab of saliva and your result is ready after 30 minutes.

This is important because of the stigma associated with the viral disease. Most people are often scared to take the test in laboratories or health centres where they can run into any one they know.

These fears are profound and not unfounded. We have had instances where untrained nurses carelessly disclosed the HIV status of patients to other people.

Being able to test yourself makes it easier to accept the result, says consultant haematologist, Dr. Kunle Adetayo.

Adetayo says that despite the counselling given to patients before testing, having someone else disclose their results is often a blow that many may not recover from.

“I would rather be the first to know that I am HIV positive or not. It’s a diagnosis most people would prefer to know. Then you can quietly walk into a clinic and get registered for treatment, knowing you have scaled the first hurdle.

“Self-testing will also increase the population of people who know their HIV status because believe it or not, more than half of those infected do not know and they will keep transmitting it,” he says.

Adetayo painted the right picture. According to the Director-General of the World Health Organisation, Dr. Margaret Chan, new statistics show that over 40 per cent of those infected with HIV are unaware of their status.

Chan says, “Millions of people with HIV are still missing out on life-saving treatment, which can also prevent HIV transmission to others.

“HIV self-testing should open the door for many more people to know their HIV status and find out how to get treatment and access prevention services.”

Doctors note that even though over 90 million Nigerians know that HIV/AIDS exists and kills when not detected early, they are yet to get tested.

A report by the Federal Ministry of Health also estimates that more than 70 per cent of Nigerian population do not know their HIV/AIDS status.

Public health physician, Dr. Zizi Egbuwoku- Imatorbhebe, says that knowing one’s HIV status saves rather than kills.

She says that although there is currently no cure for HIV/AIDS, there are drugs and treatments, such as anti-retroviral drugs, which have been proved to slow down the course of the disease and infected people who use these drugs can live a long and healthy life.

Imatorbhebe, who defines HIV as a virus that attacks the immune system, the body’s natural defence system, explains that the sooner one gets tested, the sooner one can access treatment and information to help manage the condition and delay the onset of AIDS (the advanced stages of the infection), should one test positive for the disease.

She adds, “We can’t overstate the importance of testing for HIV to ensure an early diagnosis. People respond better to treatment when they are diagnosed at an earlier stage of the disease.

“Knowing your HIV status is the key to both effective treatment and to preventing onward transmission. HIV, when not treated, quickly advances to AIDS. Make no mistake about it, AIDS kills because the immune system would be too weak to resist infection by then.”

Apart from getting treatment, Imatorbhebe states that by not knowing one’s status, one puts one’s spouse, siblings, parents and children at risk of getting infected.

She states that since HIV can be transmitted in many ways, which include blood-blood contact like blood transfusion, fluid-fluid contact such as vaginal, oral sex, an*l s*x and blood transfusion, it is possible to infect others without knowing it.

For instance, an infected pregnant woman can pass HIV to her baby or babies during pregnancy, during delivery and through bre*st feeding if she does not know she is infected.

However, if a pregnant woman tests positive for HIV, appropriate treatment can reduce the risk of infecting the baby. Experts state that HIV-positive women have about a one-in-four chance of infecting their baby during pregnancy or birth but getting treatment before child birth can reduce this figure to about one in 12.

Imatorhebe says, “You don’t have to have had s*x before you contract HIV. Babies have got it from their parents who did not know that they had it. Siblings have contracted it from each other through blood contact without knowing.

“But if you find out you are infected, you can make sure that you protect your s*x partner from becoming infected. If more people know their HIV status and use the knowledge to act responsibly, the pandemic can be better controlled.”

People have been left in shock after it came to light that a news channel allows its presenters present news fully n*de.

A group of female presenters have all stripped completely n*ked to present the news in the n*de, The Sun UK reports.

The journalists all work for the N*ked News, a Canadian channel which claims to be the ‘programme with nothing to hide’.

Nothing is hidden as the programme is broadcast six days a week, with 25 minute bulletins showing the women carrying out interviews and presenting the big news stories of the day completely starkers.

In fact, female anchors read the news fully nude or strip as they present their segments. The raunchy site which started in 1999 is spreading with one now based in Japan.

The programme now has eight anchors, plus guest stars, and was reported to be attracting more than six million viewers at its height.

Current anchors are said to include Whitney St-John, Isabella Rossini and Elise Laurenne. The male version closed in 2007 six years after it was launched.

The channel’s Twitter page has more than 60,000 followers and the site even has a N*ked at the Movies show for film fans.

Two outstanding National Youth Service Corps members who are both firstclass graduates have died mysteriously at their respective orientation camps.

The first to die, Miss Ifedolapo Amoke Oladepo lost her life in unclear situation at the Kano NYSC orientation camp on November 29.

More details of the information as reported by Punch revealed that the corper might have died of negligence as alleged by her family members.

According to one Ajibolu Marcarony Yusuff, who appears to be a relation of the deceased, Ifedolapo called home five hours to her death and told her older sister, Mrs. Oyeyode Abimbola (a nurse) to start coming to her Kano orientation camp because, as alleged, the NYSC doctors were not giving enough care.

Yusuff said the late 26-year-old corps member who graduated with a First Class degree in Transport Management from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho, was given injection at the orientation camp’s clinic, but that she called home to say that she had reacted to the injection, as she noticed visible rashes all over her body.

Later, Yusuff claimed, Ifedolapo called home to complain of tongue-twisting, and was reportedly given another injection.

Yusuff continued, “When a male doctor agreed to speak with her sister (Oyeyode Abimbola), he explained that Ifedolapo was having anaphylaxis (acute allergic reaction) and that they intended to place her under observation for an hour before transferring her to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.”

Yusuff claimed that it took about five hours before the camp management transferred Ifedolapo to General Hospital, Gwazo, instead of the AKTH as promised.

She allegedly became incommunicado, as she could no longer be reached on phone.

Thirteen hours later, the family allegedly received a call from the Kano State NYSC camp officials informing them of her death.

But, the Head of the NYSC Press and Public Relations in Abuja, Mrs. Bosede Aderibigbe, has denied that Ifedolapo did not die of stress as thought by the relations.

She said Ifedolapo was sick when she arrived the Kano orientation camp.

Also, another First Class graduate of Petroleum Engineering from the University of Uyo, Mr. Ukeme Monday, lost his life in a most shocking manner at the Zamfara State orientation camp.

He reportedly died on Thursday, December 1, of yet-to-be-ascertained causes.

A classmate of his, one Mr. Patrick Immo, noted that Monday was a committed Christian worker in his local assembly, the Power City International.

Speaking on Ukeme's death, Immo said the two of them had shopped together a few days to the orientation camp, and that they departed Uyo for their respective orientation camps on November 23.

“It was thus a rude shock to me when, on December 1, I heard that Monday had died,” Immo narrated.

In addition to his First Class certificate, friends said Monday also won four scholarships and other top academic prizes as a student.

Russia and Turkey have stated that the killer, and of a Russian ambassador, Andrey Karlov in Turkey on Monday and his sponsors will feel the retribution of both countries.

Turkish President Reccep Tayyip Erdogan described the killing at an Ankara art gallery by an off-duty police officer, as an attempt to undermine NATO-member Turkey’s relations with Russia – ties long tested by the war in Syria.

Erdogan informed that he had agreed in a telephone call with Russia’s President, Vladimir Putin to step up cooperation in fighting terrorism noting that “the bandits” who committed the act would feel retribution.

“We must know who directed the killer’s hand”, he declared.

The Russian ambassador to Turkey was shot in the back and killed as he gave a speech at an Ankara art gallery by an off-duty police officer who shouted “Don’t forget Aleppo” and “Allahu Akbar” as he opened fire.

The attacker was smartly dressed in black suit and tie and stood, alone, behind the ambassador as he began his speech at the art exhibition, a person at the scene told Reuters.

“He took out his gun and shot the ambassador from behind. We saw him lying on the floor and then we ran out,” said the witness, who asked not to be identified.

Several people who were only just returning from a wedding party have met a really tragic and untimely end in a horrific crash.

As many as 11 people have their lives, while five others are in a critical condition after a fully-loaded commercial bus collided with a Dangote trailer at the Akintelu end of the Benin-Sagamu Expressway, Punch Metro reports.

The commercial bus, owned by Efex Motors, with number plate, Badagry DG 36 ASJ, was said to be conveying mostly guests of a wedding that held in Benin, the Edo State capital.

They were said to be heading for Lagos on Sunday, when their vehicle collided with the overloaded Dangote Cement trailer, heading towards Ore.

The driver of the Dangote vehicle, identified as Idrisu Oseni, was reported to have immediately fled the scene, along with his motor boy.

Punch Metro reports that among the deceased were three families, each with three members.

Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Ondo State command, and policemen from the Igbotakun division, were said to have removed the corpses from the road and deposited them in a morgue.

They also removed the wreckage to clear the traffic that the accident generated.

The Ondo State FRSC Sector Commander, Osas Osadebamwen, said the accident was caused by the Dangote trailer driver, who “dangerously overtook the Efex bus.”

He said, “The accident happened around 3.30pm on Sunday and involved a Dangote trailer conveying bags of cement and a fully-loaded Efex Motors Toyota Hiace bus. We gathered that most of the occupants of the bus were returning from a wedding ceremony which held at the weekend.

“We discovered that the Dangote trailer driver travelled at top speed. He left his lane and went to another lane. Instead of waiting for the vehicle that was diverting, he was impatient.

“Because he was speeding, he couldn’t control the trailer. While struggling for control, the front part of the trailer detached and slid on the median. The trailer tyres burst into flames at that point. The backside of the trailer went to the other side of the road, where the Efex bus was coming from.

“In the end, 11 people died in the accident, including eight adults and three children. Their remains have been deposited in a morgue, while the injured were taken to the Ore General Hospital for treatment.”

A source, who did not want to be identified, said a celebrity was among the deceased.

“I learnt that a very popular man was among those that died. Three families, with two to three members each, also lost their lives,” he said.

An official of the FRSC, who asked not to be named, said immediately the accident happened, the Dangote trailer driver fled the scene.

He said, “This is the second time in two days that the Dangote truck drivers would cause an accident on this road. And usually, when the accidents happen, the drivers disappear into the bush.”

The Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Femi Joseph, confirmed the incident, adding that 11 people died on the spot, while five others were in a critical condition.

He said the truck driver drove against the traffic, which led to the accident.

He said, “The accident involved a Dangote Cement Company trailer laden with about 900 bags of cement, and a commercial bus belonging to Efex Motors.

“Preliminary investigations showed that the Dangote driver drove against the traffic. He rammed into the bus and pushed it off the road, thereby killing 11 people, including the bus driver, Ramoni Ajadi. We have commenced investigation into the incident.”

The Head of the Public Relations Unit of the Dangote company, Tony Chiejina, and his assistant, Sunday Esan, did not pick their calls and had yet to respond to text messages sent to them as of press time.
