The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Gabriel Olonisakin, said on Sunday in Maiduguri that an operation tagged “Operation Crackdown’’ to take over the Sambisa forest from the Boko Haram terrorists by troops had commenced.

Olonisakin spoke while fielding questions from newsmen after he inspected some military fighting equipment at the headquarters of the Threatre Command, Operation Lafiya Dole.

He also said that alongside the operation crackdown, “Operation Safe Corridor Initiative’’ had also been put in place for the terrorists to surrender.

“That is the corridor for them to surrender. That corridor is always open.

“However, we will not wait until they surrender, that is why operation crackdown, to ensure that we take over the Sambisa, clear the terrorists from those places and make the place safe for development,’’ Olonisakin said.

The chief of defence staff said that he was in Maiduguri for operational visit to encourage the troops to continue the fight and commend their efforts so far.

He also commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai for ingenuity and creativity in the war against insurgency in the North East.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that before embarking on the inspection, the CDS had met behind closed doors with the Chief of Army Staff, Commander, Threatre Command, Maj.-Gen, Lucky Irabor and senior military officers at headquarters of the Threatre Command.

NAN also reports that Olonisakin visited wounded soldiers at the 7 Division Hospital at Maimalari Cantonment. (NAN)

A butcher identified as Daniel Mbithi, has been arrested.

The man was arrested after allegedly stabbing his fellow butcher to death while fighting over customers.

According to SDE, Daniel Mbithi, 28, a Kenyan man, allegedly stabbed and killed Ali Mohammed, the deceased, on October 7.

According to the prosecution, the accused worked as a butcher along Bypass, opposite the GSU training school, where the deceased also ran a butchery.

The court heard that on the material day, the two picked a quarrel after a customer came to buy meat, prompting a fight over the customer.

Police said Mbithi who had a knife in his hand stabbed Mohammed on the chest. The deceased let out a loud cry, claiming saying that Mbithi had stabbed him.

The incident attracted the public.

The deceased was then rushed to hospital, but was unfortunately pronounced dead on arrival. The police arrested the suspect after carrying out investigations.

Mbithi denied manslaughter charges. He however pleaded with the court for lenient bond terms saying that he was of humble means.

He was released on a surety bond of Sh500,000.

The case will be heard on March 9, 2017.

A married lesbian couple who were chased away by angry community members in KwaNgcolosi area of south Africa have vowed to fight for their right to live where they choose.

According to DailySun, Nonkululeko and Nokuthula Mthembu, both aged 30, from KwaNgcolosi near Durban, intend to approach the Equality Court this week over the matter. “It is our constitutional right to live freely in the community without being discriminated against because of our sexuality,” said Nonkululeko.

The duo were forced to run for their lives last week after a confrontation the landlord of the house they were occupying.

“We had a good relationship with Ndlela when we arrived in May but it turned sour early this month when he found out that we were married. He and his family would come to our house and hurl insults at us, saying we were ruining the reputation of his village. He said he had initially thought we were sisters,” claimed Nonkululeko.

“Ndlela said he would send amabutho to demolish our house,” she claimed.

“He also accused us of selling drugs. We obtained a protection order against him but he refused to sign it. Cops could not open a case but advised us to go to the Equality Court.”

Nokuthula said: “We fled from the area because residents didn’t approve of our marriage.”

When Ndlela was approached for comment he said he was unwilling to give his version of events. “I will meet with the traditional leadership on Friday to discuss this matter.”

KZN police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said: “If they feel they were intimidated, a case can be opened. They should speak to the Hillcrest station manager.”

Sibongiseni Khumalo, spokesman for the Durban Lesbian and Gay Community Network, said: “It is only lack of information that leads community leaders to treat residents like this.

“We are working on securing an appointment with the induna so we can hear his side of the story.”

Dangote Cement Industries has said it will commence the mining and sourcing of coal for its cement production within Nigeria in the next two and half months, thus putting an end to its importation of the mineral from foreign sources.

Speaking at the 46th Annual General Meeting and conference of the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers (NSChE) at the weekend in Abuja, the Group Managing Director of Dangote Cements, Mr. Edwin Devakumar said the company has concluded on this and will go ahead with it.

Devakumar stated that with the planned commencement of coal mining, Dangote will use local coal for cement production to replace imported coal. He said there was a huge potential for this which cement producers in the country can benefit from.

Although he did not disclose the expected production volume from the coal mine, he however said the solid minerals sector in Nigeria if properly harnessed would propel economic growth and industrialisation, including cement production.

He called on the government to prioritise the minerals it hopes to develop in its solid minerals development plan as against taking up everything at once, and eventually achieving little or nothing with the plan.

“The success story in the cement sub-sector is a testament to what the private sector can do when government provides the right policy signals and creates a conducive environment for private capital.

“There is therefore no reason why the same or even greater success stories cannot be recorded with other mineral assets. We intend to open up our coal mining business in the two and half months, and stop importation of coal for our cement production,” said Devakumar.

According to him, “Whilst one acknowledges government’s effort over the past decade, like the enactment of the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act, 2007, Nigerian Mineral and Metals Policy (2008), and creation of a modern Mining Cadastral Office, a lot still remains to be done.

“The Federal Government should quickly review dormant or under-developed mining leases -“use it” or “lose it” principle. The Federal Government needs to prioritise the solid minerals it wants to focus on based not just on the value of the minerals themselves but also on the multiplier effect it would have on other sectors of the economy.”

“Coal for instance would in addition to generating export revenues also save the nation FX by displacing imports (import substitution), serve as a direct energy source for many energy intensive manufacturing processes, be used as fuel for electricity generation (diversifying the country’s power generation mix and reducing our reliance on natural gas).

“An attractive incentive structure must be put in place given the capital intensive nature and risk-profile of the sector,” he added.

The young lady shared her story explaining that her father is sexually involved with her sister.

Ondo State All Progressives Congress (APC) is unperturbed with the Appeal Court judgement which replaced Jimoh Ibrahim as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and replaced him with Mr. Eyitayo Jegede (SAN).

APC which said it welcomed the judgement said it has always been prepared to oust the PDP from the state no matter who the party’s candidate is.

The state APC Deputy National Secretary, Mr. Ogi Ngofa, who stated this while speaking to newsmen at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja on Wednesday, added that Jegede’s appearance on the scene will make no difference.
