 Richard Montgomery, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, has given reasons why the UK government banned international students from bringing family members with them.

The new policy which will be in full force by January 2024, will stop Nigerians and other foreign nationals on study visa to the United Kingdom from bringing in their family members.

The new policy is said to be part of the British Government's move to curb migration.

Richard Montgomery arising from a closed door meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa, Abuja said the new policy was done to reduce pressure on the UK's housing infrastructure and to control the inflow of migrants.

In his words:

“Many more students are trying to bring their dependents with them…but it’s not always possible to find the housing and services to meet all the needs of our existing student population…we’ll have to manage our migration in and out of the UK"

The UK Home Office had earlier announced that International students, including Nigerians, would be stopped from switching from the student visa route to a work visa until their studies had been completed.

While fielding questions from State House Correspondents, Montgomery explained the regulation, saying, “I think there are two issues here. The first is, it’s not always possible to find the housing and services to meet all the needs of all our existing student population.

“And second, reasonable people would accept that we have to manage our visitor numbers and we’ll have to manage our migration in and out of the UK just as the Nigerian government would do,” he added.

The British High Commissioner revealed that the number of Nigerian students in the UK had increased fivefold in the last three years, even as they make up 10 per cent of those granted UK visas annually.

“That issue was not raised in the meeting (with the Vice President) just now. But I would like to put the media debate about it in a broader context. Last year (2022), for example, the UK granted three million new visas, of which 325,000 were to Nigerians.

“Nigerian visitors constitute over 10 per cent of the people coming to London and the UK.

“It’s a fantastic success story for our universities. And we are really delighted that so many Nigerians are coming to the UK,” he said.

 

The Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has advised Anambra businessmen and women in Lagos State that Anambra is ready for business and investing in the state will be in their best interest.

Soludo appealed to Anambra people to always think home by imbibing the ‘homeland consciousness’ and to also ensure that part of their taxes are paid to the state, irrespective of where they reside or work.

The governor stated these during a town hall meeting with Anambra residents in Lagos while enumerating some of the progress made so far by his administration after one year in office.

He told his audience to strive to contribute their quota to the development of the state, adding that God did not make a mistake by making them Anambra people.

The governor, therefore, enjoined the people to reflect deeply on it and do everything possible to contribute to the growth of the state.

He said, “This is the same question I ask myself every day. And we have a responsibility to leave Anambra State better than we met it.

“The need to change Anambra State from a departure lounge to a destination, the homeland consciousness must be inculcated in the perceptual mind of every Onye-Anambra.

“Your host will never respect you if you don’t have a livable and prosperous homeland.”

Soludo further assured his audience that his government is determined to resurrect Onitsha by returning it to its former glory as the biggest commercial city in the South East and beyond.

He insisted that his administration has drastically reduced the menace of killings and kidnapping to the barest minimum with the security architecture put in place by his government.

He commended the Army, Navy, Police, the state’s vigilante group and other paramilitary agencies for their dogged efforts in contributing to the successes recorded so far.

The governor reassured them that law and order has been greatly restored in the state compared to the impunity that held sway before he came into office.

To boost the power supply in the state, he stated that his government recently signed an MOU with the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company for 24 hours supply of electricity in the state.

 Yunusa Dahiru also known as Yellow, a convicted child trafficker has regained his freedom.

The Kano indigene was initially slammed a 26-year jail term at the Nigerian Correctional Service facility for child trafficking and sexual exploitation of Ese Oruru, a young girl but his appeal against the judgement had the sentence reduced to 7 years.

Yellow on Saturday regained his freedom to cheers from his associates.

The Kano Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service, through its spokesman, DSC Musbahu Lawan Kofar-Naisa confirmed the release of Yellow to newsmen on Saturday.

It would be recalled that young Ese Oruru was abducted by Dahiru in Bayelsa in 2015, and taken to Kano State where he forcefully married and impregnated her.

A Federal High Court sitting in Bayelsa State sentenced Dahiru to 26 years imprisonment but a Port Harcourt Division of the Court of Appeal reduced the sentence to 7 years after an appeal by Yellow.

In the words of DSC Kofar-Naisa:

 “We are happy that during Yellow’s stay in the correctional facility down from when he was in Bayelsa until when he was transferred here in Kano, he has behaved well.

“He has also enrolled in secondary education in the correctional facility,” DSC Kofar-Naisa stated.

The Secretary to the State Government of Rivers, Dr Tammy Danagogo has on behalf of the state government ordered the immediate arrest of the engineer in charge of the construction of the two-storey building located along Okilton Drive in Ada George, near Port Harcourt  which collapsed with four persons injured on Thursday and has promised to carry out proper investigation in order to decipher the root cause of the unfortunate incident.

As  as a result of the immediate assessment of the collapse by the  State Commissioner for Special Projects, Emeka Woke , the order for the suspension of the construction work on the site was immediately effected with an integrity test scheduled to be carried out 24 hours later.

Below is a statement signed by the secretary to the state government Dr Tammy Danagogo:

 “In view of the collapse of a two-storey building at Rumuoke Street, off Okilton junction, by Ada George Road, Port Harcourt, the Rivers State Government has taken the following preliminary measures:

“Immediate closure of the construction site, search and evacuation of the debris to ensure that nobody is in fact trapped underneath as the builder claims.

“Direct the immediate arrest of the construction engineer of the collapsed building for proper investigation.

“The urgent constitution of an investigative panel to look into the immediate and remote causes of the collapse, as well as bring everyone culpable to book.

“To further warn professionals in the building sector of our state to henceforth comply strictly with all necessary regulations, as the Rivers State Government will not condone any deviation from extant laws and regulations in the sector.

“And also, I hereby call on the public to report to the authorities the activities of suspected unauthorised builders across the state.”

 Mr. Romanus Ejikeme, the father of Mmesoma, a 19-year-old student at the centre of a Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) forgery controversy, has apologised to the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

 Mmesoma, a student of Anglican Girls Secondary School in Nnewi, Anambra state, had claimed to have scored 362 in the 2023 UTME, a statement that made Innoson Vehicles to offer her a 3 million scholarship.

She was also due to receive a recognition from the Anambra State Government until an enquiry by the state official led to JAMB disproved her 362 claim.

JAMB in a press release accused Mmesoma of manipulating her result to “deceive the public to fraudulently obtain a scholarship and other recognitions”.

JAMB said she scored 249 and not 362, a statement that led to Mmesoma to do a video insisting on her claim.

JAMB subsequently withdrew her 249 score result and banned her for 3 years.

Her father, Romanus Ejikeme supported her, alleging that JAMB gave her “result to another person and they are still intimidating her”.

The Anambra government set up a panel of inquiry to look into the matter and has today released its findings, indicting 19-year Mmesoma in the process. The panel noted that she manipulated her score, an assertion that corroborated JAMB's claim.

Romanus Ejikeme in an interview with the Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, said his daughter did not open up to him on time.

He also apologised to the examination body.

“My daughter didn’t open up to me on time. She didn’t,” he said.

“When I realised the mistake she did, I blamed her a lot that she was not supposed to do such.

“Everyday, I tell her don’t dent your image because you are a star.

“As a father, I’m still apologising to JAMB and Nigerians to pardon her.”

 Tragedy occurred in Jos, Plateau State as a Nigerian Doctor, Satmak Silas Gideon died six weeks after his wedding.

A journalist identified as Bello Lukman, who anchored Silas wedding reception, said his lifeless body was found in his neighbour's apartment in the early hours of on Wednesday, August 2, 2023 after returning from Jos Unversity Teaching Hospital (JUTH).

Oh, this is sad and agonising: I anchored Dr Satmak's wedding reception on 17th June 2023 at Rochas and was hopeful of a perfect union only to be called Dr Satmak's dead body was found in their neighbor's apartment on Wednesday after earlier returning from JUTH around 4am. His dead body, according to his family members, shows signs of poisoning with signs of struggles on his hand," Bello said in a Facebook post on Friday.

"How he got to his neighbour's room at 4am is still a mystery while the neighbours ' delay in reporting his presence and death until 4pm since 4am is been investigated by the police. This is a very sad one Dr Satmak, you died just six weeks after your wedding. May Almighty God give us all the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss. May Almighty God expose your killers. Amen"

The deceased was inducted into the medical profession in February and got married to his lover Dinah, in June 17, 2023.

In a heart-wrenching incident that has left a community in shock, a reckless driver driving against traffic has caused a devastating accident resulting in the loss of lives. The tragic event occurred in Umudibia community, maternity junction, close to the Federal Polytechnic Nekede in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria. The incident took place on Sunday, August 5, 2023, leaving a family of five and their house help dead.

The family head, identified as Arthur, known by the alias Agwu Oti Aka, was not just an ordinary man - he was a disabled Para-Badminton Silver Medalist. His remarkable achievements were slated to take him to the United States to represent Nigeria in a Disabled Badminton competition on August 14, 2023. However, destiny took an unimaginable turn.

The ill-fated day saw Arthur riding a motorcycle with some of his children, while his wife, house help, and other children were on two other motorcycles. In a horrifying instant, a reckless driver, believed to be intoxicated, veered off his lane and collided head-on with the family, leading to the instant death of Arthur, his wife, and their 14-month-old child. Tragically, Arthur's house help and two sons succumbed to their injuries later in an Owerri hospital.

A devastated neighbor of the deceased family, Prince Mekoyor, recounted the harrowing incident. He explained that the reckless driver, who wasn't the owner of the vehicle - an RX 3:30 Lexus SUV - had borrowed it to facilitate a money withdrawal for purchasing drinks. The driver's reckless speed led to a loss of control at Maternity Junction Polynek, resulting in the fatal collision with Arthur's family.

Mekoyor's account painted a grim picture of the accident. Arthur, carrying his wife and youngest child on his motorcycle, collided directly with the reckless driver. Another motorcycle was transporting the house help and two other children. The impact was catastrophic, causing multiple fatalities on the spot and leaving others with severe injuries.

Spokesperson of the State Police Command, ASP Henry Okoye, confirmed the accident and revealed that three individuals involved were receiving medical attention at an undisclosed hospital. The tragedy was further validated by Justina Opara, the Badminton Coach in Imo State, who described Arthur as an industrious individual with a history of representing both the state and the nation in various sporting competitions.

As the community mourns the loss of an esteemed athlete and his family, questions regarding road safety and the consequences of reckless driving are brought to the forefront. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the importance of responsible driving and the devastating impact it can have on innocent lives.

 The Nigerian government has announced a N5 billion palliative for all the 36 states of the federation, including the Federal Capital territory (FCT).

This was done to cushion the impact of the removal of the petrol subsidy on the citizenry.

The governor of Borno state, Babagana Zulum made the announcement in Abuja on Thursday, when he spoke to State House correspondents after a national economic council (NEC) meeting presided by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Governor Zulum revealed that the federal government declared the N5 billion palliative to help alleviate the impact caused by the elimination of the petrol subsidy.

 The police officers involved in a trending video where they assaulted a woman in Rivers State some days ago has been arrested.

A video had surfaced online on Friday, September 1, showing a woman raining curses on the police officers for allegedly hitting her sister during a stop-and-search in the Ada George area of Rivers State.

In the video, the assaulted lady had a broken lip.

The Rivers State Police Command while updating on the incident on its Twitter page said:

"However, to ensure transparency and gather all perspectives, we urgently request the lady seen in the video to please come forward and share her side of the story.
