76 days to the 2023 general elections, the Labour Party on Friday said it has sacked its National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) which took the decision, also dissolved the executives of the Ogun State chapter of the party.

The Labour Party Ogun executives were involved in alleged anti-party activities.

Arabambi had insisted that the Director-General (DG) of the presidential campaign council of the party, Doyin Okupe, is not a member of the party.

This newspaper recalls that Arabambi had been involved in a running battle with Okupe, an ally of the Labour Party’s presidential flag-bearer, Peter Obi.

Also, there has been controversy in the party in Ogun State over the membership status of Okupe.

The state chapter had last Thursday announced the sack of Okupe and 10 others for allegedly not paying membership fees, high-handedness and financial recklessness.

According to the Labour Party’s state chairperson, Michael Ashade, the affected persons contravened Article 9(3) sub(iii) and Article 9(3) (xi) of the party’s constitution and thereby ceased to be party members.

However, the National Secretary of the party, Farouk Ibrahim, declared Ashade’s pronouncement concerning Okupe as null and void.

A former Commissioner in Rivers State who pleaded that his identity be undisclosed, has informed the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that three out of the five-G, support the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi.

According to a statement credited to the unnamed former Commissioner by NAN, Peter Obi is considered the  better option to the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu due to his commendable reputation as well as his soaring acceptance across the country.

The 5-G which stand for the five rebellious governors of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), meet in London today to deliberate on the presidential candidate they will throw their weight behind. Reports have it that the five governors led by governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike narrowed their option to Peter Obi and Bola Ahmed Tinubu citing a meeting of the Southern governors in Lagos a few months before presidential primaries at which it was resolved that a southerner must succeed president Muhammadu Buhari.

Speaking further, the unnamed Commissioner argued that three of the 5-G consider Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket of the APC abnormal especially as there is mass criticism against such a combination.

"You know the Presidential contest is like a beauty contest, where only the registered participants are considered. The G5 governors agree that Obi is not a saint, but comes with fresher characteristics than the other candidates.

“In the first place, it was these contrasting qualities, plus Muslim-Muslim ticket that attracted the mass following among major electoral demography, the youths, across the length and breadth of the country for Obi.

“So, I can tell you authoritatively, the three governors in support of Obi are contending that although APC has spread, it will be disastrous and suicidal if they support Tinubu with awkward ticket against their people, majority of who are for Obi.

“The three governors are therefore mindful of Electoral Act 2022 and the enormous powers and independence it has given to the electorate.”

With mention of war and unbelievers being ‘dead, captive or exiled,’ there’s strong indication that the antichrist could be Putin himself, though Elon Musk’s Halloween costume and the Twitter response to it suggest that madman is also in the running.

As an aside, if the ‘red hail covering the earth’ sounds anything like the album of the same name by Armenian jazz musician Tigran Hamasyan, it ain’t so bad. Here’s hoping 2023 won’t be either.

The so-called ‘Unknown Gunmen’ perpetrating mindless killings in the South-East region have attacked the headquarters of Ebubeagu security outfit at Uli, Ihiala Local Government Area (LGA) of Anambra State.

POLITICS NIGERIA learned that the gunmen stormed the facility in the wee hours of Wednesday and were able to gain access into it, setting fire to the building and some vehicles. The criminals also killed at least one vigilante member.

A video of the incident has been circulating on various WhatsApp groups and other social media platforms.

In the clip, seen by this newspaper, one of the assailants who filmed the attack said, “we don enter there. We are burning the Ebubeagu building”.

Spokesman of the Anambra State Police Command, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, confirmed the attack to this news medium.

“Our operatives on the scene recovered unexploded explosives and other incriminating items. But unfortunately, three local vigilante operatives were shot when they engage the assailants during the attack.

“While the other two are currently responding to treatment, the other was confirmed dead by the doctor.

“Operations are still ongoing and further details shall be communicated,” Tochukwu said.

Ebubeagu was set up in 2021 by governors of the five states in the South-east to help in the fight against insecurity in the region which has witnessed deadly attacks linked to the outlawed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB).

But the security outfit has been accused of extrajudicial killings like in the tragic incident in July 2022 where some Imo youth returning from a wedding ceremony were allegedly shot dead at a close range.

Justice Obiora Egwuatu of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has adjourned ruling on the bail application filed by Ali Bello, nephew of the Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello,  and four others in a N3 billion money laundering trial to Monday,  February 20, 2023.

At the resumed proceedings on the case on Tuesday, February 14, defence counsel, Ahmed Raji, SAN, informed the court of two motions filed on February 7, 2023, seeking the withdrawal and replacement of the initial applications of January 26, 2023, on behalf of the defendants.

In the supporting affidavits, Raji prayed the court to grant the first defendant and others bail  “on the most liberal terms”, stating that the defendants are law-abiding citizens.

“My lord, it has been more than a year since the EFCC has been investigating them and they were admitted to bail which they have not jumped, even once. In fact, the fourth defendant at a time, got his passport back and was permitted by the EFCC to travel to Mecca and he came back,” he said.

However, prosecution counsel, Kabiru Hussini, relying on a seven-paragraph counter affidavit, faulted Raji’s claims.

“My lord, our written addresses oppose the bail application, because we believe that in the interest of this case,  the defendants have every tendency to jump bail because they have all the influence, resources, and power to intimidate our witnesses and tamper with evidence in this case”, he said.

Justice Egwuatu adjourned to  February 20, 2023,  for a ruling on the bail application.

Bello and four others were docked on Wednesday, February 8, 2023,  on 18 count charges bordering on criminal misappropriation and money laundering to the tune of  N3,081,804,654.00 (Three Billion, Eighty-One Million, Eight Hundred and Four Thousand, Six Hundred and Fifty-Four Naira).  The other four defendants are Abba Adauda, Yakubu Siyaka Adabenege, Iyada Sadat, and Rashida Bello (at large).

Count one of the charges reads “That you, ALI BELLO, ABBA ADAUDU, YAKUBU SIYAKA ADABENEGE, IYADA SADAT, RASHIDA BELLO (at large) sometime in June 2020 in Abuja within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court procured E- Traders International Limited to retain the aggregate sum of N3,081,804,654.00 (Three Billion, Eighty-One Million, Eight Hundred and Four Thousand, Six Hundred and Fifty-Four Naira) which sum you reasonably ought to have known forms part of proceeds of unlawful activity to wit: criminal misappropriation, and you thereby committed an offence contrary to sections 18(a), 15(20)(d) of the Money Laundering Prohibition Act, 2011 as amended and punishable under section 15 (3) of the same Act”.

He was born in Lagos, Nigeria, on the 5th of December 1957. His birth year is 1957.
