Russia Plans to Hold Sham Independence Vote in Southern Ukraine – Says President Volodymyr Zelensky by AngelPrisi(f) : 2:07 pm On Apr 23

Zelenskiy

ZelenskiyZelenskiy

Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Russia of planning to “falsify” an independence referendum in the partly occupied southern regions of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.

In a video message Thursday evening April 21, Zelensky urged residents of areas under occupation to not provide any personal information, like their passport numbers, to the Russian forces.

“This is not to help you… This is aimed to falsify the so-called referendum on your land, if an order comes from Moscow to stage such a show,” the Ukrainian leader said.

“This is the reality. Be careful.”

The warning came after Mariupol’s mayor accused Russia of hiding evidence of its “barbaric” war crimes by burying the bodies of up to 9,000 civilians in a new mass grave, allegations backed up by satellite images from US company Maxar.

Mayor Vadym Boichenko estimated that more than 20,000 residents had been killed there, while about 100,000 people remained in Russian-occupied areas in the city. Another 100,000 had successfully escaped, mostly in private cars, while 40,000 had been forcibly deported to Russia. Others were being held in Russian “filtration camps” outside the city, he said.

North Korea Boasts Of ‘Invincible Power’ Ahead Of Key Military Anniversary by AngelPrisi(f) : 2:13 pm On Apr 25

North Korea’s state media boasted Sunday that its armed forces had “gained invincible power” under leader Kim Jong Un as it prepares for a major army holiday that analysts say could be marked with a military parade or major weapons test, IgbereTV reports.

North Korea on Monday celebrates the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Korean People’s Revolutionary Army and the nuclear-armed country has staged military parades in the past to mark key holidays.

Pyongyang has carried out more than a dozen weapons tests this year, including firing an intercontinental ballistic missile at full range for the first time since 2017.

A report by the North’s official Korean Central News Agency listed the history of the country’s military achievements, from its battles against the United States in the 1950-53 Korean War to smaller conflicts.

“All the people of the country are looking back deeply on the history of the 100 victory of our revolutionary armed forces,” it said

Five lessons manufacturing operations can learn from enterprise IT teams by AngelPrisi(f) : 2:23 pm On Apr 29

Digital manufacturing stresses factory networks in ways their designers never dreamed of. You’ve got more devices that need more bandwidth and wider access. You might be pulling ahead of competitors using cloud applications like predictive maintenance or “digital twins” that simulate the effects of changes. Meanwhile, cyber-attacks are increasing. By some accounts, manufacturing was the most attacked industry in 2021.

To meet these new demands, legacy production networks need a major facelift. Fortunately, operational technology (OT) teams don’t need to reinvent the wheel. OT has a tradition of looking to IT for inspiration, as when IT charted a course to deploy common operating systems and standard networking some 20 years ago. Today, OT can borrow IT’s tools and techniques to modernize production networks. Here are five lessons from enterprise networks.

1. Use managed switches

If you’re still using unmanaged switches, it’s time for an upgrade. Unmanaged switches move information between devices—but that’s it. No monitoring. No ability to prioritize critical traffic. No security protections. Unmanaged switches are typically used for isolated networks, which the controller bridges when needed. But unmanaged switches and isolated networks can’t meet the demands of smart manufacturing. Follow IT’s lead and replace legacy switches with managed switches, which provide more bandwidth, quality of service (QoS), and built-in security protections. Managed switches can also act like sensors, giving you early warning about cyberattacks and looming production problems.

2. Automate deployment and monitoring

Many OT teams are still manually configuring and updating their network infrastructure. Manual configuration is time-consuming and prone to error. Typos can cause performance problems or security vulnerabilities. To save time and effort and avoid risk, IT teams automate network infrastructure configuration with software-defined network management tools like Cisco DNA Center. You can, too. Collaborate with IT to enter the switch configuration once into templates or workflows. After that, you can apply the configuration to any or all switches with a click. Cisco DNA Center can also help you keep all network-device firmware current with recommended security updates. Everything is consistent. From the same dashboard you can see network performance problems and step-by-step instructions for remediation.

3. Gain visibility into production assets and communications flows

Can you confidently say that you know every asset connected to the production network? Most OT teams can’t. IT teams use automated discovery tools to see all connected devices and their communications patterns. But discovery is trickier in manufacturing environments because of the wide variety of devices and industrial protocols. We built Cisco Cyber Vision specifically for industrial networks. It automatically takes an inventory of every connected device, understands most industrial protocols, and reports details on the connected devices and communications flows. Just as IT does, you can use that information to find opportunities to increase operational efficiency, spot security vulnerabilities that need patching, and establish security policies. What can you discover? Vulnerabilities in your industrial automation and control system. Inappropriate communications, like traffic flowing between industrial systems that don’t need to communicate. Old, unpatched applications that are insecure. A high-definition camera that someone forgot to turn off that’s clogging the network and slowing down production applications. For more ways to improve operational efficiency with Cisco Cyber Vision, read this blog.

4. Enforce security policies

Like enterprise networks, production networks typically have a firewall that blocks unwanted traffic from the outside. But some threats will inevitably sneak through and IT teams limit their spread using a technique called segmentation. It’s a key tenet of zero-trust security. The idea is to limit device-to-device communication to what’s absolutely necessary. Machines on different lines typically don’t need to communicate, for example, and keeping them in different segments prevents an infection on one line from spreading to the other. Use Cisco Cyber Vision to understand necessary communications flows and define groups. Then, work with your IT team to use Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE) to create and deploy security policies. Managed switches (see point 1) enforce these policies.

5. Use the cloud where it makes sense

Manufacturers are improving operational efficiency with cloud services like predictive maintenance, energy management, and digital twins that simulate how manufacturing processes and assets will perform under different conditions. A Google study found that 83% of manufacturers have a cloud strategy in place. Cloud services depend on a myriad of network connections, applications, and data flows to perform. They are becoming critical to production uptime and product quality, so it’s critical to find out about any performance problems right away. Troubleshooting takes too long when the source of the problem might be your own network, the internet, a failed application, the cloud provider’s network, or the cloud application itself. Enterprise IT teams monitor these complex systems using tools for full-stack observability (FSO). OT can do the same. Use Cisco AppDynamics, Cisco ThousandEyes Internet Insights, and Cisco Intersight Workload Optimizer to see network performance all the way from your industrial devices through the network to the cloud applications.

OT pros are experts in industrial processes and machines. Fortunately, you don’t need to also become a networking expert to move forward with digital manufacturing. Instead, borrow tried-and-true practices from IT teams to keep the network high performing, available, and secure.

Trying To Identify a Corporate Purpose? You Don’t Have To Save the World by AngelPrisi(f) : 2:12 pm On May 03

It’s easy to declare yourself a purpose-driven organization. It’s much harder, however, to identify just the right purpose, and to activate it throughout the organization so it naturally elevates your business strategy and operations.

Driven by stakeholder demands for companies to stand for more than profits, and a belief that businesses are more capable than governments of solving society’s toughest problems, organizations are trying to ensure that their values, brand strategy, business strategy and execution are all tightly coupled. It is the primary way that companies build trust with their employees and customers.

“People are more focused on purpose than I’ve ever seen in my entire career,” said Lisa McLeod, a consultant who has authored several books on identifying and activating an organization’s noble purpose. “There are two reasons for that. Customers are asking, ‘Are you here to help me or are you here to close me?’ And employees are asking, ‘Why does what we’re doing even matter?’”

So how do you identify and activate a purpose? Or decide on just one? Sustainability, diversity, equity, poverty, and upward mobility are all noble causes, but no one company can effectively address them all.

“Purpose doesn’t mean saving the world,” said Haley Rushing, co-founder and chief purposologist (yep, that’s a thing) of the Purpose Institute, a consultancy that helps organizations discover, define, and bring to life their deeper purpose. “But it does mean articulating why you exist and the problem you’re trying to solve for customers.”

Get a 360° view of success

Vantage Point magazine brings together thoughtfully curated voices from the world’s most influential companies. Each issue unpacks intimate insights — from inspiring resilient teams to the promises and pitfalls of data to the impact of transformation shaping the workplace.

Defining your purpose

To identify a purpose, leaders need to consider what their stakeholders (both internal and external) are passionate about, what is needed in the community and the world, and what the company is uniquely positioned to deliver.

Your value proposition cannot be disconnected from how you actually make money as a company.

Nickle LaMoreau, Chief Human Resources Officer, IBM

Leaders need to look at what they’re already doing (a new product, service, partnership), and ask themselves how to use it as an opportunity to elevate and align it with a societal issue their stakeholders care about. They can then begin to articulate and fulfill their purpose in a more fruitful way.

Put succinctly, “Your value proposition cannot be disconnected from how you actually make money as a company,” said Nickle LaMoreau, Chief Human Resources Officer at IBM. “It needs to be what you actually do.”

Consider these examples, which are clear, precise, target real societal issues, and apply what each organization does well to address them: Sweetgreen’s purpose is “building healthier communities by connecting people to real food.” Tesla’s purpose is to “accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.”

McLeod consults with companies to help them identify and activate their purpose. She begins most engagements by posing three key questions: How do we make a difference to our customers and our market? How do we do it differently? What do our employees love about their job?

Answering these questions helps organizations take a broader view while ensuring their purpose is not reduced to a marketing slogan or so vaguely grandiose that it does not address precise needs.

“The mistake that people make is they over-index on lofty language and under-index on specificity,” McLeod said.

Activating and elevating your purpose

Once you have articulated the unique “what” and “why” you do what you do, the next step (and indeed the bigger challenge) is activating it throughout the organization, mobilizing every employee to march to the same beat and integrate the purpose into their daily jobs.

If that challenge is not met, the company’s stated purpose can feel disconnected from its operations and strategy. Thus the purpose becomes nothing more than empty words, and trust is either never gained, or worse — lost.

“One of the most crucial roles for any leader is helping people at all levels of the organization make the connection between what drives them and the company’s noble purpose,” Hubert Joly, former CEO of Best Buy, wrote in Harvard Business Review in October 2021.

The goal is to drive employee behavior, not parrot the company tagline, by communicating how each person’s job helps the company achieve its purpose.

Rushing, of the Purpose Institute, has worked with many high-profile companies to do just that. One, a major apparel brand, wanted to move beyond just selling high-performance activewear to empowering customers to live active and sustainable lifestyles.

“As part of that strategy, we reinvented their retail experience, making sure the retail employees’ purpose aligned with the organization,” Rushing said. Its retail stores evolved beyond selling items stacked on racks to facilitating education and activity demonstrations — how to hike, how to camp with kids — by knowledgeable salespeople.

This serves two purposes: it shows their customers the brand can provide all the products and know-how to help them live healthier lives, and it shows employees that their jobs can be more fulfilling than selling sneakers and sweatpants.

No daylight between what you say and what you do

Business leaders need to be cognizant of business practices that undermine the credibility and integrity of their purpose. When stakeholders see a gap between what you say and what you do, you lose trust. But if you make a bold strategy move to align with your purpose, even if it requires a short-term cost, it’s an enormous boost to building trust and confidence in your organization.

“You need clarity of purpose for how you are going to improve life for customers and make a difference in the market, and you need values to guide your behavior,” said McLeod. “Your purpose is about taking what’s implicit in your business and making it explicit.”

A famous case in point — CVS/Caremark announced in 2014 that its new corporate purpose was “helping people on their path to better health.” That year it announced it was stopping all sales of tobacco and tobacco products, a move that cost it more than $2 billion in revenue.

“Tobacco products have no place in a setting where healthcare is delivered,” then-CEO Larry Merlo said at the time.

The move paid off. Long term benefits, like hiring and retaining talent, were easier to secure because people rallied behind the cause. The company was also able to sign on more business partners in industries like HR and insurance, which recognize the high cost of employing smokers, Helena Foulkes, then-executive vice president of CVS Health said in an interview a few years after the move. CVS, which purchased Aetna Health in 2018 for $70 billion, posted revenues of $268 billion in 2020, up from $139 billion the year it stopped selling tobacco.

Purpose as a proxy for trust with employees

The pandemic has accelerated many organization’s purpose-driven initiatives. In recent months, the Great Resignation has driven business leaders to motivate their workforce with clarity of purpose. When you consider the enormous importance consumers and employees place on trust and living your purpose, it’s easy to see why.

According to a global “Strength of Purpose” study by Zeno Group, consumers are four times more likely to trust and purchase from a brand with a strongly-articulated purpose. Moreover, they are 4.5 times more likely to champion the brand, and six times more likely to defend the brand in a challenging moment.

Corporations have all the power in the world. That’s what’s driving the ascendance of purpose in the corporate world.

Haley Rushing, Co-founder and Chief Purposologist, The Purpose Institute

At the same time, employees, emboldened and empowered by the tight labor market, prefer to work for purpose-driven organizations.

“Companies need to understand that they’re not getting anywhere unless they have an authentic organizational purpose,” said Naina Dhingra, a McKinsey and Company partner, on a McKinsey podcast. “Employees who say their organizations spend real time reflecting on the impact they make on the world are five times more likely to be excited to work for the company.”

PwC suggests business leaders ask themselves if their structure, systems and resourcing equips employees to bring the organizational purpose to life. Specifically:

Are you a magnet for the right talent, hiring and retaining people that allow you to excel at the capabilities needed to deliver on your purpose? Do you connect with intention across boundaries, breaking down silos so people across the organization can work together to achieve its purpose? Do you invest in your purpose, putting your money where your purpose is?

For example, a company that’s meeting all three criteria could hypothetically (as in the sports retailer example noted earlier) pitch itself more authentically to choosy job candidates, connect marketers to sports scientists, retail floor clerks and personal trainers in an interdisciplinary fashion, and allocate a percentage of its profits to underinvested communities.

Purpose as a proxy for trust with customers

Stakeholders, in particular customers, need to know and understand your purpose. Have you defined your purpose as a solemn promise to your customer? Remember, the world may not need more software, sofas or soap, but it does need companies to use their unique strength and passion to address real problems.

Not too long ago, a company’s trustworthiness centered primarily around protecting customer data, and its purpose was to sell products customers wanted. Not anymore. Customers have unparalleled choices, access to information, and a massive platform to share their opinions, whatever they may be.

If organizations can establish and constantly demonstrate their commitment to living their brand purpose to customers, trust will follow. Contrary to Milton Friedman, profits are not the total measure of success when customers, and in fact all stakeholders, judge corporations on so much more.

“Corporations have all the power in the world,” said Rushing. “There’s a much greater confidence in companies to step up and use their resources, power, ingenuity, and the creativity of their people to solve problems. That’s what’s driving the ascendance of purpose in the corporate world.”

Anambra insecurity: ‘Unknown gunmen’ are Igbos from other states — Governor Soludo by AngelPrisi(f) : 2:01 pm On May 27

Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has said that Igbo people from other states are the “unknown gunmen” terrorising the state.

Soludo stated this in during his state broadcast where he declared a 6 pm to 6 am curfew in seven Local Government Areas of the state, where the activities of the hoodlums were prevalent.

The governor, who also banned the use of tricycles in many in the affected local government areas, said the curfew would remain in place until peace is restored.

“Let us be very clear. These criminals causing mayhem in Anambra, albeit of disparate groups and gangs, are Igbos (dominantly from other South-East states) whose real objective is lucrative criminality and foisting their idolatrous religion on the region

“Unfortunately, every criminal gang (including cult groups) claims to be a “liberation movement”, making it difficult to differentiate between any genuine agitators from criminals. Unfortunately also, the criminals now dominate the space,” he said.

Don't be left stranded by the next Facebook outage. Click image to subscribe!

According to him, Anambra is the prime target because it is the most lucrative location for kidnapping for ransom in the South-East.

He also stated that with their immense propaganda machine funded largely by their sponsors from abroad, they have tried everything to indoctrinate the people with all kinds of false emotive narratives, and divert attention from their real objectives.

According to him, they claimed to be “fighting for the people”, and yet randomly kill the same people, destroying their livelihood, and stopping their children from going to school.

“What has agitation got to do with kidnappings including the kidnapping of priests of God, invasion of churches and tabernacles including desecration of the Alters of God? Why is it that everywhere they gather and in every camp they operate, there is a Deity/idol to which they routinely offer blood in sacrifice?”

“From accounts of those kidnapped and later freed the stench of dead bodies in the camps cry up to heaven. We see videos of them and their idol worship; we note their threats to priests and bishops, including threatening to take over some churches?” he asked.

According to Soludo, “they have failed, and would continue to fail.”

Everything We Know About Kunle Adeyanju’s Bike Ride from London to Lagos by AngelPrisi(f) : 5:56 pm On May 31

When Mr Eazi dropped his Life is Eazy, Vol. 2 – Lagos to London album in 2018, we didn’t think anyone would attempt the road trip. Yet, here we are four years later, and a similar seemingly impossible feat of travelling across the 16 cities on a motorcycle is a casual day on Kunle Adeyanju’s bucket list, a Nigerian man who calls himself an adventurer, entrepreneur and author.

On the 19th of April, 2022, he tweeted the commencement of his journey from London to Lagos on a motorcycle. He successfully arrived in Lagos on Sunday, 29th May 2022. Over the years, the “daredevil” has gone on adventurous trips like climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, bungee jumping, skydiving and a three-day trip from Lagos to Ghana on a bicycle. Clearly, Kunle is no stranger to danger. Here’s everything we know about his 41-day transatlantic journey.

Why did Kunle embark on this unimaginable bike ride?

In March, he announced his decision to hold back from enlisting as a volunteer to fight in the Russian-Ukrainian War. With 20,000 foreign fighters already enlisted, Kunle wanted to divert his energy to aid charitable causes in Nigeria. That’s when he made the decision to journey to Lagos, a distance that could beat the 2017 Guinness World Record of 11,315.29 km held by Mark Beaumont (UK), for the longest travelled on a motorcycle.

RELATED: I Biked Across 22 Nigerian States in 7 Days

So what’s the charity side of his plan?

Well, the goal was set in partnership with the Rotary Club of Ikoyi Metro D9110 to raise ₦20 million. As a rotary club member since his university days and current District governor-elect of the Ikoyi charter, it is no surprise that this charity ride is in collaboration with the group. The club is a charter of the Rotary organisation that provides humanitarian services worldwide. Each charter is expected to execute projects that support local communities.

100% of the funds donated on Kunle Adeyanju’s trip are expected to be channelled towards the charter’s goal to raise awareness for polio, primary health care and rural employment schemes. As for his welfare during the trip, Kunle has not confirmed how he plans to cover the cost. What has been evident from his tweet is that biking enthusiasts and Rotary club members across different African countries have assisted him with accommodation, bike repairs and occasional top-ups on food and water.

With a business of his own, Kunle also tweeted that he’d be making a 10% matching grant to each donation. Exactly how much has been raised so far is unclear, but the ₦20 million target was increased to ₦100 million as he continued to document parts of his experience between cities on YouTube and Twitter. The increasing attention has attracted more and more international organisations to partner on the cause, so the ₦20 million target increased.

Online spectators are motivated to support Kunle’s charity plans in partnership with the Rotary Club. After his tweet on the 19th of April, Kunle gained 2000 followers in 24 hours. The anticipation has continued to increase in the last 36 days of the trip as spectators wait to see how much of the journey will be achieved.

To the main event: The last 36 days

Kunle’s transatlantic move: London – France – Spain – Gibraltar – Morocco – Western Sahara – Mauritania – St Louis – Senegal – Gambia – Mali – Côte d’Ivoire – Ghana – Togo – Benin – Lagos.

Day 1 – 6: Europe

Following the thread from his Twitter updates between the 19th and 24th of April, Kunle navigated through the first three cities in six days. From London, he rode to Dover, a major port in South East England. Dover to Calais, his next destination, is the shortest distance between Great Britain and Europe. Crossing into France through Calais, Kunle rode to Borges as his final point for Day 1.

Over the next two days, Kunle covered two provinces in Spain. On day two, he covered 702 km from France to Girona, Spain, and rode another 458 km on day three. By day six, he arrived at Algeciras, in the southern part of Spain, and stopped at Gibraltar.

How did he cross over to Morocco from Spain?

Day 7 – 11: Crossing into Africa, navigating the Sahara and connecting to Mauritania

Kunle announced his arrival in Africa with a tweet on the 25th of April, day 7. It is unclear how he crossed the Mediterranean, but there is speculation that a ferry was involved. While Kunle has not confirmed any details, online sources show that once a week, a ferry departs from Gibraltar to Tangiers Med in Morocco. It takes about 80 minutes for the ferry to cross. However, the service is provided primarily to Moroccan workers in Gibraltar. Other options are available, but you typically require a train or boat to get further into Morocco.

On arrival, Kunle was hosted by the rotary club members of Tangier Marina Bay. He stated that the outing went on till 1 a.m., and by 10 a.m. the next morning, he was on his motorcycle from Tangier to Marrakech.

After a day of touring the scenic views, Kunle rode to Agadir, another major city in Morocco. Agadir is on the fringes of the Sahara Desert and proved to be a slightly more challenging terrain for our rider. Kunle documented that his journey through the desert took two hours. After safely navigating the heinous winds, he arrived at El Ouatia (also known as Tan-Tan Beach) and enjoyed the view of the Atlantic from the shores.

By day 11, Kunle travelled to El Ouatia, the border of Morocco to connect to Mauritania. He travelled deeper into the Sahara Desert and ended up in Western Sahara. He covered his longest distance yet, navigating his way into Nouadhibou, Mauritania on day 12.

Day 13 – 20: Entering West Africa from Mauritania

At 11 a.m. the following day, Kunle rode to the capital city of Mauritania, Nouakchott, and shared tweets about his unpleasant experience in both Mauritanian cities. He vented about everything from the lack of hospitality from the locals to the horrible encounter with immigration going into St. Louis, Senegal, on day 14.

In St. Louis, he was hosted by a rotary club couple who owned a beach house. By day 15, Kunle set out for the capital city, Dakar. Days 16 to 18 were dedicated to resting and networking with delegates like the Nigerian ambassador to Senegal. Day 19 was spent promoting the cause of his charity ride, and the next day, he rode to Saloum de Delta, Senegal.

Day 21 – 27: Arrival into West Africa, broken wheels and entry into Côte d’Ivoire

On day 21, Kunle rode to Tambacounda, the largest city in Senegal, and ended the day at Kidira, a town on the Senegal – Mali border. Days 22 to 24 were filled with bike checks and hangouts with Malian bikers in Dabola, a city in south-central Mali.

Unfortunately, Kunle dented the rim of his bike in an attempt to avoid a collision with a bus, after a series of interrogations by the Senegalese border police officers, on his ride from Dabola. It was dark, and Dabola is on the other side of Senegal’s national park, so it was imperative for Kunle to get help.

Luckily for him, he noticed a village 200m away and pushed his bike there. He called on an interpreter, who had helped him navigate his way from Dabola, for help. At 2 a.m. the next morning, Kunle hired a vehicle to Kayes in the western area of Mali. With the help of rotary club members and the bikers he met in Mali, he was loaned a replacement wheel in Bamako, Mali’s capital.

There have been no confirmations on how long it took to fix the bike, but with the delay averted, Kunle’s updates on Twitter showed he spent the 12th to 14th of May resting in Bamako. Those three days count as days 22 to 24.

On Day 26, the 16th of May, Kunle tweeted his arrival at Burkina Faso. The following morning, he arrived at the Ivorian – Burkina Faso border and tweeted about his entry into Côte d’Ivoire.

Day 28 and counting: Getting into Lagos

On day 28, Abidjan was the destination. Three days later, Kunle tweeted a picture of his arrival at the Cape Coast, and eventually, Accra, Ghana. At that point, he had covered 11,301 km in 31 days.

On the 27th of May, Kunle departed from Ghana and began his trip to Lome. Only 298.5 km away from Lagos, Kunle’s Twitter followers anticipated his arrival. From his Twitter updates, it’s unclear how long Kunle spent in Lome, but within that time, he visited government agencies like the Ministry of Health and connected with rotary club members to discuss the goal of raising awareness on issues like polio.

After what seemed like a 24-hour tour of Lome, Kunle shared details of the assistance he got from the protocol officer at the Nigerian embassy, Madam Rita. According to the tweet, Madam Rita was behind his ease of access between the borders of Lome and Cotonou. Pictures of Kunle’s arrival in Benin Republic were shared the next day.

On the 29th of May, Kunle was received by other Nigerian bikers at the Seme borders. There haven’t been any updates on how much money has been raised or what’ll be next for this adventurous biker. For now, he’s lodged for an all-expense-paid stay at the Radisson Blu Hotel Ikeja, a well-deserved welcome into Lagos after 41 days of transatlantic riding.

Details of the journey were covered under the official hashtag: #LondontoLagos
