Celebrating 5 Years of Advocacy Through Art

By Wole Adedoyin

The International Human Rights Art Festival (IHRAF) has officially rebranded itself as the International Human Rights Art Movement (IHRAM) on the occasion of its 5th year anniversary. This monumental change reflects the organization's evolution and expanded focus, solidifying its commitment to advocating for human rights through the power of art.

In an inspiring move, the International Human Rights Art Movement aims to amplify its impact and reach as it continues its noble journey of using art as a vehicle for social change. The rebranding reflects the organization's dedication to fostering a global movement that harnesses the creative expression of artists to shine a light on human rights issues worldwide.

As part of the rebranding process, the organization has introduced a fresh and dynamic logo that symbolizes its renewed vigor and purpose. This emblem encapsulates the essence of the International Human Rights Art Movement's mission - to promote awareness, understanding, and action surrounding human rights through various art forms.

Visitors to the newly revamped website will notice a transformation in the nomenclature, with all references to IHRAF now replaced by IHRAM. This strategic adjustment is not only symbolic but also practical, allowing the movement to resonate more deeply with its supporters while maintaining a clear identity.

"The decision to rebrand as the International Human Rights Art Movement marks a significant milestone in our journey. Over the past five years, we have witnessed the power of art in raising awareness and effecting change. This evolution reflects our growing commitment to the cause and our determination to foster a global movement that empowers artists to become advocates for human rights," said Tom Block, Founder and Executive Director of the International Human Rights Art Movement.

As the International Human Rights Art Movement paves the way for the next phase of its impactful journey, it invites supporters, artists, and change-makers from around the world to join hands in this endeavor. Through collaborative efforts, art will continue to serve as a potent catalyst for social progress and human rights advocacy.

IHRAF @ 5: EMPOWERING AFRICAN WRITERS AND ARTISTS TO CHAMPION HUMAN RIGHTS THROUGH ART
By Wole Adedoyin
The International Human Rights Art Festival (IHRAF) marks a significant milestone this year as it celebrates its fifth anniversary. Founded by visionary artist Tom Block, IHRAF has emerged as a powerful catalyst for change in the artistic and literary realms across Africa. Through its various initiatives, IHRAF has nurtured, published, and showcased the talents of numerous African writers and artists, fostering a sense of community and a platform for expression.
At the heart of IHRAF's impact is IHRAF Publishes, a platform that has tirelessly championed African voices. Countless African writers have found their works published and shared with a global audience, amplifying diverse narratives and shedding light on the rich cultural tapestry of the continent.
A defining moment for IHRAF came in 2020 when it collaborated with the Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) to organize the END SARS National Poetry Competition. This innovative contest was a response to the urgent need to address police brutality and assault through the arts. The synergy between IHRAF and SYNW resulted in the publication of "END SARS Rhythms," an anthology of poems capturing the essence of the protest and its impact.
Building on this success, IHRAF continued to champion human rights issues through the African Human Rights Essay Competition. The subsequent anthology, "The Malady and the Remedy," delved into critical topics, providing a platform for thought-provoking discussions on human rights challenges.
Diversity of expression has been a hallmark of IHRAF's initiatives. The African Human Rights Playwriting Competition, for instance, showcased the innovative capacity of African playwrights to address social issues creatively. Winners of this competition found their works celebrated and shared, contributing to a richer discourse on human rights.
The African Human Rights Short Story Competition was another feather in IHRAF's cap, uncovering narratives that might otherwise have remained untold. These stories were showcased on IHRAF's website, reaching a global audience and fostering greater understanding.
The ongoing African Human Rights Spoken Words Contest stands as a testament to IHRAF's commitment to promoting dynamic and engaging forms of expression. Exceptional works from this contest will take center stage at the upcoming 2023 International Human Rights Art Festival, set to unfold in New York.
Over the course of its journey, IHRAF has showcased the vibrant creativity of African writers through the publication of five impactful anthologies. These anthologies stand as a testament to IHRAF's commitment to amplifying diverse voices and promoting human rights through the arts. The anthology titles include: "END SARS Rhythms," "Get Consent," "The Malady and the Remedy," "Voices of Africa: A Call for Freedom," and "From Africa With Love: Voices of A Creative Continent."
Beyond the publication of anthologies, IHRAF has taken a proactive role in nurturing artistic growth. The organization's innovative initiative, the IHRAF BOOK CLUB, has become a cornerstone of this effort. Through Monthly Book Readings and engaging workshops, IHRAF through its African Secretariat is fostering a community of readers and learners, providing a space for rich discussions and the exploration of thought-provoking literature.
Through these projects, IHRAF has provided indispensable assistance to African writers and artists. Additionally, the IHRAF Interview Series has given audiences a peek into the creative minds behind these endeavors, featuring insightful discussions with more than 150 writers and artists spanning the breadth of the African continent.
As IHRAF enters its fifth year, it does so with a legacy of impact that reverberates throughout the African arts and human rights communities. The organization's dedication to amplifying marginalized voices and promoting human rights through art stands as an inspiration, fostering a future where artistic expression remains a powerful vehicle for change.

CHIEDU EZEANAH EXTENDS APOLOGY TO DENJA ABDULAHI OVER DEFAMATION ALLEGATIONS REGARDING ANA LAND by synw(m) : 12:23 am On Aug 30

CHIEDU EZEANAH EXTENDS APOLOGY TO DENJA ABDULAHI OVER DEFAMATION ALLEGATIONS REGARDING ANA LAND

By Wole Adedoyin

In a heartfelt gesture, Chiedu Ezeanah has tendered a sincere apology to Denja Abdullahi for his previous statements that inadvertently cast aspersions on Mr. Abdullahi's character.

The apology is in relation to the contentious issue of ANA Land, and serves as an attempt to mend the rift caused by the divisive politics of leadership succession within the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA).

Chiedu Ezeanah reflected on his long-standing acquaintance with Mr. Denja Abdullahi, which dated back to 2008 when they first met after Ezeanah's relocation from Lagos to Abuja. The two enjoyed an amicable friendship devoid of any confrontations, with shared interests in the literary world.

The camaraderie took an unfortunate turn in 2019, during the period of ANA's leadership transition. Ezeanah and Abdullahi found themselves supporting opposing factions, leading to a rupture in their friendship. The ANA Land matter was seized upon by both camps as a rallying point, inadvertently contributing to a divisive atmosphere among ANA members.

Acknowledging his role in exacerbating the situation, Ezeanah expressed regret for amplifying the call for accountability regarding ANA Land. He candidly admitted to frequently invoking Denja Abdullahi's name, believing that his insights would provide ANA members with valuable information. In particular, Ezeanah alleged that Abdullahi had received funds from the ANA Land Developer.

Addressing his initial apology posted on his Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/100002690334545/posts/pfbid034Q1F4kBVVmmhrS4jvUMsNVmGdD4AGnQMpkjzPQ9YeVtiS2fXKKjABXmBjv7NGegWl/?d=w&mibextid=qC1gEa), Ezeanah reaffirmed his remorse for propagating the false claim that Denja Abdullahi had received monetary compensation from the ANA Land Developer.

Recognizing the inaccuracy of his statements, Ezeanah issued a formal retraction, acknowledging the damage it may have inflicted on Mr. Abdullahi's reputation as a prominent writer, public servant, and former President of ANA.

Assuring that such an incident will not be repeated, Ezeanah vowed to protect Denja Abdullahi's reputation, emphasizing that the allegations against him were entirely baseless.

He further expressed deep regret for the harm caused by his actions.

Ezeanah underscored the shared commitment among citizens and writers to a better society and a stronger ANA that serves the interests of Nigerian writers.

He lauded Mr. Abdullahi's contributions to this endeavor, respecting his achievements as a writer and as a former President of ANA.

Ezeanah pledged his unwavering support for these contributions while refraining from any personal attacks on Mr. Abdullahi or any other writer.

Finally, Chiedu Ezeanah conveyed his best wishes to Denja Abdullahi and expressed his sincere hope for reconciliation and mutual understanding.

The apology, dated August 28, 2023, originated from Garki, Abuja.

Hajia Farida Muhammed’s Historic Visit To ANA Osun: Uniting Writers and Shaping ANA'S Future by synw(m) : 2:12 am On Sep 03

HAJIA FARIDA MUHAMMED’S HISTORIC VISIT TO ANA OSUN: UNITING WRITERS AND SHAPING ANA'S FUTURE

Hajia Farida's visit to ANA Osun yesterday was not only historic but also praiseworthy. She is a well-known figure in ANA, with an impressive track record of service. She previously held the position of Vice Chairman in ANA Niger and later assumed the role of Chairman for the same chapter. Her dedication and commitment to ANA led her to become the National Treasurer during Denja Abdulahi's leadership. In 2020, she achieved another milestone when she was elected as the Vice President of ANA in an emergency election organized by the association's highest governing body. She is now in her second term, continuing to contribute significantly to ANA's growth and success.

It's worth noting that the outgoing President of ANA, Camillus Ukah, had previously undertaken a similar visit in 2019 when Mr. Muriola Awosemo served as the Chairman of ANA Osun. However, the leadership of ANA Osun, led by Mr. Muriola Awosemo, later aligned themselves with Barr. Ahmed Maiwada, leaving Wole Adedoyin as the sole supporter of Camillus in the entire ANA Osun chapter.

Some candidates hold the belief that visiting ANA Osun is an inefficient allocation of their time and resources. They argue that the state lacks significant electoral influence in the upcoming ANA Presidential election.

Hajia Farida Muhammed's visit to Osun State yesterday brought significant positive changes to the chapter. Her presence had a transformative impact in several ways. Firstly, it resulted in Dr. Femi Ademiluyi attending the meeting, marking his first appearance since the contentious events of 2019 witnessed in Enugu. Secondly, her presence fostered unity within ANA Osun. According to Dr. Femi Ademiluyi, the former Chairman of ANA Osun, Mr. Muriola Awosemo, had the intention to attend the meeting but was unable to do so due to logistical constraints, and he conveyed his sincere apologies.

For those familiar with the dynamics of ANA Osun, Dr. Femi Ademiluyi holds a prominent position in the chapter. Not only was he the founding Chairman of ANA Osun, but he also served as the National Publicity Secretary during the presidency of the Late Alhaji Abubakar Gimba and as National Treasurer during the presidency of Professor Olu Obafemi. It was a pleasure to have the former Deputy Rector of the Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, present at yesterday's meeting.

The Caretaker Chairman of ANA Osun, Mrs. Nikeagbeja Adesanya, took the floor to extend a warm welcome to Hajia Farida Muhammed and Dr. Femi Ademiluyi, opening the meeting with gracious words. She proceeded to provide the attendees with an overview of the meeting's purpose and expressed her appreciation to Hajia Farida for choosing to bring her campaign to Osun.
In a similar spirit, Dr. Femi Ademiluyi commended Hajia Farida Muhammed for her decision to enter the ANA presidential race, noting that no female writer had previously attempted such a feat. He emphasized the historical significance that would accompany the election of a female writer to the highest position within ANA. Dr. Femi Ademiluyi then shared insights from his experience in ANA politics, recounting the strategies and dynamics during the presidencies of Mallam Abubakar Gimba and Prof. Olu Obafemi.
He highlighted the pivotal roles played by notable figures such as Prof. Femi Osofisan, Prof. Olu Obafemi, Odia Ofeimun, Dr. Wale Okediran, and Denja Abdulahi in ANA's development and growth. Dr. Femi Ademiluyi advised Hajia Farida Muhammed to actively engage with these influential figures, seeking their support and counsel. Furthermore, he encouraged her to build relationships with ANA leaders in various state chapters to bolster her campaign.
Additionally, Mr. Femi Omoniyi, the Caretaker Secretary of ANA Osun, expressed his appreciation to Hajia Farida for choosing to launch her campaign within the ANA Osun chapter. He remarked that her presence in Osun signified her genuine intentions for the chapter's welfare. Mr. Omoniyi also addressed the issue of reconciling ANA factions within the state, noting that a reconciliation committee had been established and was actively working towards reuniting the disaffected members with the larger ANA Osun community.
In a further effort to promote reconciliation, Mr. Femi Omoniyi encouraged Dr. Femi Ademiluyi to leverage his influence and resources to support the reconciliation committee's efforts in reintegrating the aggrieved members into the mainstream ANA Osun.
Hajia Farida Muhammed was allotted an hour to address the gathering and share her vision for ANA should she assume the role of President. With her customary eloquence, she presented her background and qualifications to the assembly. Subsequently, she elaborated on her comprehensive four-point agenda, which encompassed:
1. Inclusive Governance: She emphasized the importance of an all-inclusive approach to ensure the smooth running of the association.
2. Human Capital Development: Hajia Farida stressed the need to invest in the development of ANA's human resources, recognizing that people are a valuable asset.
3. Infrastructure Enhancement: She discussed her plans for improving the association's infrastructure to provide a better platform for ANA's activities.
4. Revenue Generation: Hajia Farida highlighted her strategies for generating revenue to sustain and support ANA's initiatives and growth.
Her presentation offered a clear roadmap for her potential presidency, outlining her commitment to strengthening ANA on multiple fronts.
Wole Adedoyin, the former National Publicity Secretary of ANA, who now holds the position of ex-officio member, expressed his gratitude to Hajia Farida for choosing to launch her campaign within the state. He also extended his appreciation to Dr. Femi Ademiluyi for responding to his invitation and attending the emergency meeting. In a notable announcement, Adedoyin declared his intention to contest a new position in the upcoming ANA National election, with further details to be disclosed in the latter part of this article. The meeting was well-attended by other prominent members of the Association.

He informed the House that they hail from the same state and pledged his commitment to actively support her campaign for victory. Additionally, he emphasized the compelling rationale behind him and fellow ANA Members in the South South region rallying behind her candidacy, emphasizing her status as a beloved native daughter.
Mr. Adekunle Olarotimi Ojo, a dedicated member of ANA Oyo and the Oyo State Chairman of the National Association of Nigeria Theatre Arts Practitioners (NANTAP), expressed his admiration for Hajia Farida Mohammed's decision to run for the ANA Presidency. He offered valuable suggestions to Hajia Farida Mohammed, urging her to prioritize these initiatives once she assumes the role of ANA President. He also extended his best wishes for her success in her presidential campaign.
Mr. Busayo Fakunle and Mr. Wasiu Saka emphatically urged Hajia Farida to prioritize the promotion of peace and unity within ANA once she assumes the presidency. They highlighted the absence of these vital elements in the outgoing national administration of ANA. They counselled Hajia Farida to work towards reconciling all disgruntled members and uniting the association under her leadership.
Following an engaging interactive session with ANA Oyo members, Hajia Farida Muhammed's campaign team, led by her Campaign Director General, Mr. Taslim Abiola Layonu, proceeded to the office of a distinguished Fellow of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA). This eminent figure also happens to be the former president of the Nigerian Academy of Letters (NAL), Francis Egbokhare. Prof. Egbokhare holds the esteemed position of a Professor of Linguistics and serves as a lecturer at the University of Ibadan.
Professor Egbokhare extended a warm welcome to Hajia Faridah Muhammed and her campaign team. During their meeting, Mr. Taslim Abiola Layonu provided Hajia Faridah Muhammed with a brief opportunity to present her agenda to Professor Egbokhare. After discussing her agenda with Prof. Francis Egbokhare, he offered his full support to Hajia Farida Muhammed. He expressed his strong commitment to promoting women in positions of power and emphasized that the time is ripe for a female writer to lead ANA. Prof. Egbokhare encouraged Hajia Farida Muhammed to inform him of any concrete ways he could assist her in her presidential aspirations beyond mere words. He highlighted that witnessing someone like Hajia Farida Muhammed become the first female ANA President would not only be a momentous occasion in history but also serve as an inspiring example for other women to pursue similar achievements in various fields.
Upon departing from Professor Francis Egbokhare's office, Hajia Farida Muhammed proceeded to Professor Remi Raji's office. Professor Remi Raji, an accomplished poet and Professor specializing in English and Creative Writing at the University of Ibadan, also held the esteemed titles of Fellow and former President of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) from 2011 to 2015.
Professor Remi Raji commended Hajia Farida Muhammed for her decision to enter the Presidential race of ANA. He took the opportunity to reflect on his own experience when he contested against the late Professor Jerry Agada, a former President of ANA and a former Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Professor Remi Raji went on to offer valuable advice to Hajia Farida Muhammed and her team. He stressed the importance of devising a well-thought-out strategy, forming a dedicated team, and engaging with key stakeholders of ANA at the grassroots level. In his view, the ANA Congress, composed of financial members of ANA, holds the power to determine the next President of ANA. Therefore, he urged her to ensure that her campaign reaches all the state chapters and establishes connections with their leaders to secure their support.
Following her departure from Prof. Remi Raji's office, Hajia Farida Muhammed's campaign entourage proceeded to the residence of Prof. Femi Osofisan in Bodija. Prof. Femi Osofisan also highlighted several critical issues that ANA should address, including the need to audit her membership, enhance the development of young Nigerian writers' skills, create platforms for the sale and dissemination of Nigerian writers' works, particularly through electronic channels etc..
Furthermore, he encouraged Hajia Farida Muhammed to intensify her campaign efforts by extending her outreach to other ANA chapters across the country's six geopolitical zones.
Likewise, Prof. Nike Osofisan, the wife of Prof. Femi Osofisan and herself a distinguished professor of computer science, lauded Hajia Farida for her courageous decision to run for the top position within ANA. Prof. Nike Osofisan, who holds the distinction of being the first Nigerian woman to earn a Ph.D. in this field, expressed her admiration for Hajia Farida's candidacy. Notably, she had recently participated in an ANA event commemorating the 10th anniversary of Chinua Achebe's passing. Prof. Nike Osofisan noted that it would be a momentous occasion if Hajia Muhammed were to become the first female President of Africa's largest writers' association.
Lastly, the campaign convoy of Hajia Farida made a halt at Mrs. Bukola Ladoja's residence in Bodija. Mrs. Bukola Ladoja, the wife of the former Governor of Oyo State, Senator Rasheed Ladoja, the President and Founder of the Reading Awareness Society for Development in Africa (RASDA) and serves as an ambassador for the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA). She graciously hosted the campaign team and offered them delightful refreshment.
Mrs. Bukola Ladoja praised Hajia Farida Muhammed for her courageous decision to vie for the top position within ANA. She said, upon learning of Hajia Faridah’s ANA Presidential ambition, she immediately began campaigning on her behalf. According to her, she has since taken Hajia Faridah’s campaign to Kogi and several states in the South East through her 'One Child One Book One Week Project.' The 'One Child One Book One Week Project is specifically designed to kindle a passion for reading among primary and secondary school students in Nigeria. The project was formally introduced during the annual Convention of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) held in Abuja last year.
As she’s taking the project to other chapters of ANA in the South South and South East chapters of ANA, she promised to campaign for Hajia Farida Muhammed and promotes her 4-points agenda to members of ANA in the concerned states.

Rumpus At NCAC Over The Implementation Of The 8-Years Tenure Policy For Directors by synw(m) : 4:59 am On Sep 03

RUMPUS AT NCAC OVER THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE 8-YEARS TENURE POLICY FOR DIRECTORS

By Sikiru Fatai

Further to the enactment and implementation of the new Public Service Rules(PSR) on the 27th July, 2023, over 500 directors in the Federal Civil Service who had spent 8 years and more on the rank had to comply by quitting service in line with section 020909 of the new public service rule that made specific provision of 8 years limit for directorate cadre staff on GL. 17. A few days later , a further circular emanating from the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation(OHCSF) expressly stated that the affected officers should be given a three month notice starting from 1st August, 2023 to commence their process of disengagement from service in line with rule 021210 of the new Public Service Rule.

While compliance took various forms across the service due to the non-specificity of the circulars as regards the methods of disengagement, some vindictive CEO of some MDAs took extreme measures against perceived disfavoured retiring officers by embarking on actions that violated the hallowed and time tested disengagement rules and procedures from the public service.

Such happened at the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC) where it was alleged that the Director –General /CEO ,Otunba Olusegun Runsewe expressly ordered that the August salary of the four retiring directors and the most senior directors in the organization be stopped. It was alleged that this decision was taken as soon as the initial first circular from the OHCSF was released on the 27th of July,2023, when he allegedly instructed a letter be written to the IPPIS office to immediately remove the said officers from the federal government payroll.

This decision was said to have been taken even after the said officers were yet to be served their letters of mandatory retirement from service , which they all later collected from the 8th to 15th of August, 2023 and promptly complied with by handing over to the most senior officers in their various departments within the organization.

Matters got to a head when these mandatorily retired officers , who had all not put in not less than 30 years of service to the country in various capacities did not get their August 2023 salary as provisioned for in the new PSR and in the circular from the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture which gave clear directive to that effect to the Chief Executives and Head of Agencies under the Ministry.

Preliminary investigations made revealed that it appeared that it was only in the NCAC service –wide that retiring or retired officers affected by the new tenure policy were not paid their August 2023 salary. Further investigations and interviews with serving staff of the organization who do not want their names in print for fear of victimization revealed that the NCAC has all along been a cauldron of clear violation of public service rules and official procedures since the coming of the present CEO in 2017, against perceived staff that stood their grounds over the administrative arbitrariness, megalomania, vindictiveness and unfocused style of leadership of the CEO. There were allegations against the CEO of gross neglect of workers’ welfare, peopling the management team of the organization with junior officers above their seniors, retaining retired officers who are his lapdogs in positions well after their retirement against clear provisions of the public service rules, effectively undermining career officers of the organization with a coterie of personal staff he brought along on assumption of office, lack of transparency and due diligence in public procurement, penchant for excessive cultivation of the media and high net-worth government officials to cover up for his underachievement in office, abject neglect of the organization’s zonal offices across the country in the affairs of the organization and extreme disdain for Public Service Rules and Procedures that guide operations in government offices.

The Director General /CEO of NCAC was alleged by many of the staff spoken to be someone who behaves like a pharaoh and an emperor that brooks no opposition and flaunt his high wire connections ; often boasting of his capacity to crush anyone who stands in his way.
He was alleged to have single-handedly crippled a governing board set up by the government to oversee the agency by ensuring they never sat for a day until they were dissolved years after; thereby leading to poor governance structure in the organization and making him the sole authority on the affairs of the organization and leaving the staff of the organization at the mercy of his tyrannical rule. The organization has allegedly been turned into a slave camp where everyone must bow and worship the emperor or be dealt with unfairly or officially victimized or excluded with nowhere to turn to for reprieve.

All the staff spoken to stated that the four newly retired directors whose August 2023 salaries were illegally withheld on the order of Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, through the Director of the Human Resources Department of the organization , were among the best staff ever produced in the history of the organization and were among those bold enough to stand up to him and some of them had had running battles with him ;necessitating his going after them even after they had exited the service. The concerned staff are calling on the federal government and the public to look into the activities of NCAC to save the staff that are suffering in silence and prevent their suffering from future injustices in the hands of their rampaging CEO.

Our background checks on the history and antecedents of Otuba Olusegun Runsewe in government showed that he was once a Director -General of the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation(NTDC) during the OBJ era where he had a running battle for lack of respect for constituted authority, violation of official procedures and insubordination with the then Minister for Culture and Tourism, Chief Adetokunbo Kayode, which led to his suspension from office and eventual sack. Our checks also revealed that at his current post in 2021, after the expiration of his first four year tenure , he blatantly disregarded a written directive by the then Hon. Minister of Information and Culture, through the then Permanent Secretary, to handover to the most senior director, pending his re-appointment or otherwise.

He continued illegally to occupy his position, telling the press that he was appointed by president Buhari who was then away for a medical check up abroad and that it was only the president that can tell him to hand-over to anyone. Eventually, he was curiously re-appointed for another four year tenure and thereafter went on administrative rampage and persecution against the most senior director of the organization until she was caught up with mandatory retirement from service with the recent re-introduction of the 8-year tenure policy in the new PSR.

Other revelations that our checks revealed was his conviction by an Abuja High Court for contempt of Court in 2018, after disobeying a court order issued in favour of craftsmen and women of the popular and flourishing Arts and Crafts CHOGM Village, adjacent Abuja Sheraton Hotels and Towers which was suspiciously razed down by fire in 2017 under the supervision of his agency. The crafts men alleged then that he was behind the disaster that led to the loss of millions of artefact and crafts of infinite value that made many to become jobless while he maintained that the village was harbouring robbers and kidnappers.

Since 2017 when the fire incident took place, the once-thriving village that was the cynosure of tourists visiting Abuja had been overgrown with weeds and under lock and key. The litany of complaints against the alleged high-handedness maladministration of Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, often relayed in muffled tones by the cowed staff of NCAC, underneath the gloss and shine of his adeptness at pulling ritualized publicity stunts , will need an investigative and administrative inquiry to fully unearth.

The Quest For Female Leadership In ANA by synw(m) : 6:09 pm On Sep 07

THE QUEST FOR FEMALE LEADERSHIP IN ANA
By Wole Adedoyin
With the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) election drawing near, candidates are actively campaigning across different state chapters to garner support and endorsements. Notably, this election marks a historic moment as a female writer is stepping forward to vie for the top leadership position within the Association. It's worth recognizing that women have not previously sought the highest office in ANA.
The significance of this milestone can be traced back to the invaluable contributions of women to Nigerian Literature. This journey began with trailblazers like Flora Nwapa, widely regarded as Nigeria's first female novelist. Born in January 1931 in Oguta (or Ugwuta), a town nestled on the eastern shores of the stunning Oguta Lake in Imo State, southeastern Nigeria, Flora Nwapa achieved a remarkable feat in 1966 by becoming the first African woman to publish a novel in the English language.
In an interesting twist of fate, the outgoing ANA President also hails from Imo State, further highlighting the rich literary heritage and potential for transformative change that this upcoming election holds for the Association.
Numerous esteemed female writers subsequently joined the literary scene. These authors included luminaries such as Buchi Emecheta, Mabel Segun, Hafsat Abdulwaheed, Catherine Acholonu, Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo, Stella Oyedepo, Sefi Atta, Karen King-Aribisala, Sarah Ladipo Manyika, Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani, Molara Ogundipe, Ifeoma Okoye, Chinelo Okparanta, Osonye Tess Onwueme, Molara Wood, Balaraba Ramat Yakubu, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Ayobami Adebayo, Nnedi Okorafor, Helen Oyeyemi, Chika Unigwe, Lola Shoneyin, and Toyin Adewale-Gabriel, among others.
In the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), numerous accomplished women writers have enthusiastically pursued various positions at the national level. However, it's worth noting that very few have ventured to run for the esteemed position of ANA Presidency. Among these talented female authors are individuals such as Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo, Maryam Ali Ali, Joy Esuku, Chinyere Obi-Obasi, Prof. May Nwoye, Charry Ada Onwu Otuyelu, and Farida Muhammed, just to name a few.
A quick examination of ANA's Past Presidents list reveals a historical absence of female leadership within the organization. The roster includes notable figures such as Chinua Achebe (1981-1986), Kole Omotoso (1986-1988), Femi Osofisan (1988-1990), Ken Saro-Wiwa (1990-1993), Odia Ofeimun (1993-1997), Abubakar Gimba (1997-2001), Olu Obafemi (2001-2005), Wale Okediran (2005-2009), Jerry Agada (2009-2011), Remi Raji (2011-2015), Denja Abdullahi (2015-2019), and Camillus Ukah (2019-present). Notably, there has not been a female president in the history of ANA.
It's hardly a surprise anymore that Hajia Farida Muhammed has set her sights on the top leadership position within ANA. Her campaign trail has already taken her through states such as Osun, Oyo, Nasarawa, and more states like Benue and Abuja are poised to be included in her itinerary. The undeniable truth is that within the realm of ANA politics, Hajia Farida Muhammed holds considerable sway. Her influence played a pivotal role in the rise of Denja Abdulahi in 2015 and Camillus Ukah in 2019. In 2015, Farida's unwavering support for Denja Abdulahi was not only evident but also served as a testament to her dedication and commitment to the cause.
ANA Niger once held a significant role in ANA Politics on a national scale. It played a pivotal role in the emergence of Prof. Remi Raji in 2011, a time when Denja Abdulahi assumed the position of Vice President in ANA. However, this chapter later experienced a division when a prominent figure within it contested for ANA's top position in 2015, challenging Denja Abdulahi.
In 2015, at the Kaduna convention, Hajia Farida stood firmly alongside Denja Abdulahi, resulting in a noticeable split within ANA Niger. One faction supported the presidential candidate from the state, while the other rallied behind Denja Abdulahi. Many of us bore witness to the events in Kaduna, and this marked a significant turning point for ANA Niger.
Since that tumultuous event, ANA Niger has struggled to reunify and regain its former cohesion.
In 2019, when Camillus Ukah announced his bid for the ANA presidency, he selected Hajia Farida as his running mate. However, some influential figures from Niger state and the northern regions, who supported Camillus Ukah's opponent, began to mobilize against his presidential aspirations. Although the election did not take place that year, the ANA Niger delegation was notably divided, with Hajia Farida leading a substantial group to garner support for Camillus Ukah. I was amazed by her ability to approach members of the northern chapters in support of Camillus Ukah’s candidacy. At the Enugu Convention ground, she tirelessly moved from one northern chapter to another, seeking endorsements for Camillus Ukah.
Recently, while reviewing video clips I recorded during the Enugu Saga, I came across a segment where a member of one of the ANA Northern Chapters accused Hajia Farida Muhammed of abandoning one of their own for an unfamiliar candidate. The man was expressing his grievances in Hausa, a language I didn't understand at the time. It was only after I shared the video with a Hausa-speaking friend that I learned the reason behind the accusation. If there is interest, I am willing to share the video, along with other captivating short clips related to the Enugu Saga.
I am aware that certain political entities she has displeased due to her association with Mallam Denja Abdulahi and Camillus Ukah are now joining forces with prominent figures within ANA to thwart her presidential aspirations. I find it rather astonishing to witness a well-known personality leading the charge in this campaign.
At present, my belief firmly holds that Hajia Farida Muhammed should not be dismissed simply because of her gender; instead, her admirable actions deserve recognition and reciprocity. It has come to my attention that there are those who doubt Farida Muhammed's capabilities. However, it is essential to acknowledge her impressive track record, including her roles as Vice-Chairman and Chairman of ANA Niger, her tenure as a national treasurer, and her current position as the outgoing Vice President of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA).
Similar comments were made about Camillus Ukah in the past, with many giving him various labels. Some claimed he was too reserved, incapable of delivering results, or even called him a puppet. The question remains: Is Camillus Ukah truly a puppet? I leave it to my readers to provide their answers.
I believe it is high time that female writers within the ANA (Association of Nigerian Authors) become more prominent in ANA politics. Elections often involve politics, and this phenomenon is not unique to ANA; it occurs in other similar professional associations such as NUJ (Nigeria Union of Journalists), NMA (Nigerian Medical Association), NBA (Nigerian Bar Association), and so on.
For instance, in NUJ, there exists NAWOJ (National Association of Women Journalists), which actively safeguards the interests of female journalists across the country. During elections within NUJ, NAWOJ consistently supports their female candidates. However, we haven't seen a comparable support system within the writers' community. The Women Writers Association of Nigeria (WRITA), which was once vibrant, seems to have fallen into disuse. In the past, a majority of WRITA members were also ANA members, making it a potentially valuable resource to support individuals like Hajia Farida Muhammed during times like these. It's time for ANA to recognize and empower its female writers within its political landscape.
If WRITA were to be inactive, I strongly recommend its revival to champion the cause of women in the field of writing. There are numerous talented female writers across the country who are outperforming their male counterparts. It is essential to direct attention towards female writers and their well-being. ANA, in its current state, may not adequately cater to the needs of all writers.
The upcoming ANA National Election will be a litmus test to determine whether female writers within ANA are truly valued beyond being used solely for garnering votes for their male counterparts. I firmly believe that deserving individuals like Hajia Farida should also be considered for the top leadership positions within the association.

This event, dedicated to honoring and commemorating the distinguished writer Chief Daniel Olorunfẹmi Fágúnwà MBE, is scheduled to take place tomorrow, Thursday, December 7th, 2023, at Trenchard Hall, University of Ibadan, Ibadan. The proceedings will commence at 11:00 am.

Distinguished legal scholar, Professor Olaide Gbadamosi – SAN, the Dean of Law and Provost at the Ifetedo Campus, Osun State University, will lead the intellectual discourse.
Chief Daniel Olorunfẹmi Fágúnwà MBE, renowned as D. O. Fágúnwà, was a pioneer in Yorùbá literature, credited with introducing the Yorùbá language novel. In 1938, he penned Ògbójú Ọdẹ nínú Igbó Irúnmọlẹ̀, considered the first Yorùbá language novel, showcasing his literary prowess. Fagunwa's literary contributions continued with masterpieces like Igbó Olódùmarè, Ìrèké Oníbùdó, and Àdììtú Olódùmarè.
His novels, deeply rooted in folktale traditions, explore the mystical with supernatural elements. The narrative, often featuring Yorùbá hunters engaging with kings, sages, and gods, delves into the complex interplay between the Christian beliefs of Africa's colonizers and traditional religions. Fagunwa's impact resonates, influencing contemporary writers such as Amos Tutuola. His creative brilliance extended to the incorporation of Greek myths and Shakespearean themes, as evident in Igbo Olodumare.
D. O. Fagunwa's literary significance extends beyond narrative techniques. He was the first Nigerian writer to infuse folk philosophy into storytelling, marking a groundbreaking approach. In recognition of his contributions, Fagunwa received the Margaret Wrong Prize in 1955 and was conferred the Member of the Order of the British Empire in 1959.
The Diamond Jubilee Celebration and Memorial Lecture aim to honor and reflect upon Chief D.O. Fagunwa's enduring literary legacy. Scholars, literary enthusiasts, and the general public are invited to Trenchard Hall, University of Ibadan, to partake in this momentous occasion. The family, foundation, and the University of Ibadan Department of Linguistics and African Languages anticipate a profound exploration of Fagunwa's works and their relevance in contemporary society.

JP Clark Society Celebrates JP Clark’s 90th Posthumous Birthday by synw(m) : 9:30 pm On Dec 06

THE JP CLARK SOCIETY URGES NATIONWIDE CELEBRATION OF THE 90TH POSTHUMOUS BIRTHDAY OF JP CLARK
The JP Clark Society, a dedicated organization committed to preserving the legacy of the late Professor John Pepper Clark-Bekederemo, affectionately known as J.P. Clark, has called upon Nigerians, fans, and literature enthusiasts worldwide to commemorate the 90th posthumous birthday of the iconic Nigerian poet and playwright. The esteemed professor would have turned 90 today if not for his demise on October 13, 2020.
In an official statement released by the Director of the JP Clark Society, Wole Adedoyin, the society invites individuals to honor Professor J.P. Clark's memory by engaging with his timeless works, which have left an indelible mark on the literary landscape. The late poet is celebrated for his impactful poetry, a staple in educational curricula across Nigeria and beyond, with notable works like "The Casualties," "A Reed in the Tide," "A Decade of Tongues," "State of the Union," and "Mandela and Other Poems."
These profound poems, alongside classics such as "Night Rain" and "Abiku," explore a diverse range of themes, from the consequences of violence and protests to governmental corruption, the allure of nature, pride in African values, and the challenges of neo-colonialism. Professor J.P. Clark's early works are particularly distinguished by their celebration of musical beauty, employing repetitive sounds strategically placed throughout his verses to imbue the poems with significance and emotion.
Beyond his poetic prowess, Professor J.P. Clark made significant contributions to the world of drama, with plays like "Song of a Goat," "The Masquerade," "The Raft," "Ozidi," "The Boat," "The Wives’ Revolt," and "All for Oil." These theatrical masterpieces address vital socio-political, cultural, and economic issues on the African continent, showcasing the depth of his literary insight. While some critics have scrutinized his use of stage devices, others have applauded his inventive fusion of African and European imagery.
Professor J.P. Clark's literary footprint extends beyond poetry and plays to include works like the oral literary epic "Ozidi Saga," the influential essay "The Example of Shakespeare," and "America, Their America," where he draws insightful comparisons between Western and African values. His involvement in the African Writers Series further solidifies his status as a multifaceted literary luminary, contributing both editorial and literary works.
Acknowledging his pivotal role in shaping modern African literature, Professor J.P. Clark stands shoulder to shoulder with luminaries such as Christopher Okigbo, Chinua Achebe, and Wole Soyinka. In a historic 1986 visit to Dodan Barracks in Lagos, he, along with Achebe and Soyinka, appealed to the then-military president, Ibrahim Babangida, on behalf of Major General Mamman Vatsa, who faced allegations of a coup d'etat. Tragically, their plea went unanswered, and Vatsa was executed hours later.
The JP Clark Society finally encouraged all to celebrate the enduring legacy of Professor John Pepper Clark-Bekederemo by immersing themselves in his literary works, ensuring that his contributions to African literature continue to resonate for generations to come.

Writers Condemn Brutal Attack on National Secretary Izunna Okafor, Demand Swift Justice by synw(m) : 4:21 am On Dec 07

WRITERS CONDEMN BRUTAL ATTACK ON NATIONAL SECRETARY IZUNNA OKAFOR, DEMAND SWIFT JUSTICE
The Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) has vehemently condemned the reprehensible attack on its National Secretary, Mr. Izunna Okafor, by officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Anambra State. The incident occurred last week as Okafor, a dedicated reporter with 247ureports.com, was returning from Nnewi after covering the Anambra South Rally of the Soludo Ambassadors.
A group of ten NSCDC officers reportedly assaulted Mr. Okafor, accusing the media of being a source of problems in Nigeria. Shockingly, the officers not only physically attacked the journalist but also brandished firearms, threatening to shoot him. It was only due to the intervention and pleas of fellow passengers that a potentially tragic situation was averted.
Mr. Okafor, who sustained injuries during the attack, has since spoken out about the horrifying experience.
The SYNW under the leadership of Wole Adedoyin has expressed its deep concern for the safety and well-being of journalists who play a crucial role in society by providing objective and timely information.
The SYNW commended the prompt response of the Anambra State Commandant of the NSCDC, Mr. Edwin Osuala, for initiating a full-scale investigation into the matter. The SYNW urged the authorities to ensure a thorough and impartial inquiry, holding accountable anyone found guilty of wrongdoing in accordance with the law.
According to the statement, “Freedom of the press is a cornerstone of democracy, and any attack on journalists undermines this fundamental pillar of society.”
The SYNW therefore, called on relevant stakeholders, including human rights organizations, to join in condemning this assault and advocating for justice.
In the statement, SYNW President, Wole Adedoyin emphasized the need for security agencies to respect the rights of journalists and citizens, stating that such acts of aggression are not only an attack on individuals but also an assault on the principles of democracy and the rule of law.
The SYNW called on the NSCDC and other security agencies to institute measures that will prevent a recurrence of such incidents, ensuring the safety of journalists and upholding the constitutional rights of citizens.
“The SYNW stands in solidarity with Mr. Izunna Okafor and all journalists who face threats and attacks in the course of their duty. The SYNW will closely monitor the investigation and collaborate with relevant organizations to ensure justice is served.” The statement ended.
