By Wole Adedoyin
The International Human Rights Art Festival (IHRAF) and its African Chapter are pleased to announce the extension of the submission deadline for the anthology "Thorns, Tears and Treachery: An Anthology of Short Stories/Poems on the Sudanese Civil War." The new deadline for submissions is July 31st, 2023. This extension is aimed at encouraging and capturing the diverse voices of writers residing in Sudan. IHRAF welcomes both Sudanese and non-Nigerian poets to contribute to this important literary endeavor.
The primary objective of this Pan-African project is to amplify the views and voices of Sudanese and African writers, both at home and abroad, on the ongoing civil war in Sudan. ANA Warns Public Of Unconstitutional Group's Attempt To Destabilize The Association Ahead Of National Election by synw(m) : 1:30 am On Jul 26

ANA WARNS PUBLIC OF UNCONSTITUTIONAL GROUP'S ATTEMPT TO DESTABILIZE THE ASSOCIATION AHEAD OF NATIONAL ELECTION
By Wole Adedoyin
The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) has issued a stern warning to its chapter, media, partners, and the general public regarding an unconstitutional and deviant group operating under the name, "Committee for Accountability on ANA Land." The association cautions that this group's actions pose a serious threat to ANA's stability as the new National Executive Committee (EXCO) election approaches. Notably, the individuals behind this fraudulent group were also involved in plotting the 2019 Enugu Crisis, signaling a recurring pattern of attempts to sow discord within ANA.
ANA's leadership emphasizes that this unauthorized group has been exploiting the association's name to engage in various illegal activities, tarnishing ANA's reputation and credibility. The group's intention appears to be causing chaos and turmoil within the organization, which could lead to a crisis during the upcoming election period. ANA believes that this deviant group's motives are highly suspect, and its members have no legitimate authority to act on behalf of the association.
Concerned individuals seeking information about ANA Land are encouraged to approach the association directly at its Secretariat located at Mamman Vatsa Writers Village, Mpape, Abuja, Nigeria. ANA assures the public that its doors are open for inquiries regarding ANA Land, and the association is committed to transparency and accountability.
ANA strongly advises both the public and its members to treat any information or news originating from this deviant group with extreme skepticism. It urges everyone to disregard any misinformation or fake news disseminated by this unauthorized entity. Such false information can be detrimental to ANA's image and objectives, and it is crucial not to be swayed by the machinations of this unconstitutional group.
As ANA prepares for its new National EXCO election, the association remains vigilant against any attempts to destabilize its operations. The call for vigilance extends to all stakeholders, including members, the media, and the public. By staying cautious and united, ANA can safeguard its integrity and continue promoting Nigerian literature and authors without hindrance. Together, let us reject the disruptive tactics of the deviant group and ensure that ANA's legacy of literary excellence endures.

Plot To Plunge ANA Into Another Crisis Uncovered: Ana Responds With Resolute Unity by synw(m) : 1:37 am On Jul 26

PLOT TO PLUNGE ANA INTO ANOTHER CRISIS UNCOVERED: ANA RESPONDS WITH RESOLUTE UNITY
By Wole Adedoyin
The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) is compelled to address the recent discovery of a plot by certain individuals, masquerading as members of ANA, to destabilize the organization and plunge it into another crisis. These individuals, referred to as literary herdsmen, were previously involved in the crisis that occurred in ENUGU in 2019. As the current ANA President's tenure approaches its end, it has come to light that these elements are once again scheming to disrupt ANA's progress as the association prepares for upcoming elections.
The focal point of this devious plot centers around the ANA Land, which has been a topic of significant discussion and encountered numerous challenges over the years. The writers' village project, an embodiment of ANA's vision for transformation, faced obstacles such as financial constraints, legal disputes, interference from land speculators, and government actions.
In 2012, in an effort to overcome these challenges and propel the development of ANA Land, the Association enlisted the services of a developer, KVML. This developer was tasked with both selling a portion of the land and constructing essential infrastructural facilities for ANA's benefit. Substantial progress was made between 2015 and 2019 under the leadership of the previous National EXCO, and the current National EXCO, from 2020 till date, has diligently worked with KVML to further accelerate the development process. This collaboration has resulted in the completion of notable buildings, a testament to the promising future of the writers' village.
ANA wishes to clarify certain misconceptions related to the project. Contrary to baseless claims, KVML has never reported any loss of land since its involvement in 2012. Furthermore, annual reports on developments within the writers' village have been regularly presented during the Association's AGMs and conventions, fostering transparency and accountability.
We emphasize that ANA remains committed to openness and encourages anyone with pertinent information to share it through official channels rather than resorting to sensational posts on social media. Constructive and peaceful discussions are vital to the progress of the Association and the realization of our vision.
ANA acknowledges the remarkable recovery from challenging times in 2019 and is resolute in upholding its reputation. The Mamman Vatsa Writers Village stands as a symbol of unity and progress for Nigerian authors, and ANA is steadfast in its dedication to bringing this vision to fruition.
As the Association prepares for upcoming elections, we urge all genuine members to remain vigilant against any attempts to disrupt the integrity and unity of ANA. Let us work together to preserve the essence of our Association and continue empowering Nigerian authors for generations to come.

ANA Disowns Ana Integrity Forum, Approves New Groups For Official Operations by synw(m) : 1:47 am On Jul 26

ANA DISOWNS ANA INTEGRITY FORUM, APPROVES NEW GROUPS FOR OFFICIAL OPERATIONS
By Wole Adedoyin
The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) announces its official dissociation from the WhatsApp group known as the ANA Integrity Forum. This decision comes in response to the group's hijacking by fraudulent individuals posing as authors, which caused a crisis within the association in Enugu back in 2019. ANA issues a stern warning to its members to withdraw themselves from the ANA Integrity Forum immediately. The group, led by non-financial and non-card carrying members of ANA, has engaged in activities contrary to the principles and values of the Association.
In a significant move to streamline communication and promote collaboration among its members, the National Secretariat of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) has approved three official WhatsApp platforms for its operations. The following platforms have received official endorsement:
1. The Mbari Series Platform
2. ANA Situation Room
3. ANA Watchdog
ANA has meticulously selected these platforms to ensure effective communication and facilitate meaningful interactions among its members throughout the nation. By centralizing its operations through these approved channels, the Association aims to uphold transparency and preserve the core essence of ANA.
Maik Ortserga, the General Secretary of ANA, emphasized the necessity of disbanding any WhatsApp groups operating under the ANA name without official approval. Such unauthorized platforms do not represent ANA's interests or values and may create confusion among members. The Association calls upon the administrators of these unauthorized groups to promptly comply with this directive.
ANA recognizes the essential role WhatsApp groups play in fostering engagement and cooperation among writers. However, maintaining uniformity in communication channels is crucial to prevent misinformation and fragmentation within the writing community. By endorsing the three platforms mentioned above, ANA aims to create a cohesive and supportive environment for all its members.
All ANA members are strongly advised to exit any WhatsApp groups operating under ANA's name, which are not part of the officially approved platforms. This measure ensures that ANA members participate in discussions and share information exclusively on the sanctioned platforms, thus enabling more efficient and focused interactions.
As ANA continues to promote the art of writing and literary excellence across Nigeria, the Association looks forward to strengthening its bond with members through these officially approved WhatsApp platforms. These communication channels will play a pivotal role in fostering camaraderie and enriching the creative experience of all our esteemed members.

Membership Revalidation Forms: ANA begins accepting submissions from state chapters by synw(m) : 12:45 am On Jul 27

MEMBERSHIP REVALIDATION FORMS: ANA BEGINS ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS FROM STATE CHAPTERS
By Wole Adedoyin
The National Secretariat of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) has officially commenced the acceptance of revalidation of membership forms from state chapters.
In a statement released by Maik Ortserga, the General Secretary, authors and literary enthusiasts who are yet to submit their revalidation forms are urged to act swiftly, as the deadline for submission is rapidly approaching.
The revalidation process is a crucial step taken by ANA to update and maintain accurate membership records, ensuring that the association continues to serve its members effectively. ANA takes pride in being a diverse and inclusive literary community, welcoming authors and readers alike to participate in its events and activities. However, only those who have successfully revalidated their membership will be considered in good standing to attend Annual General Meetings (AGMs), Extraordinary General Meetings (EGMs), and any other upcoming programs.
The decision to enforce revalidation of membership aligns with the resolutions reached during the Extraordinary General Meeting held in Makurdi in July 2020, as well as the AGM of 5th December 2020 in Ilorin. Furthermore, the recent meeting between ANA's national executive committee and the Chairmen/Secretaries in Ilorin in 2023 also endorsed this move.
By ensuring that members revalidate their membership, ANA aims to enhance engagement, foster a stronger literary community, and provide its members with access to a myriad of opportunities and benefits. This revalidation process also supports ANA's commitment to promoting Nigerian literature and supporting authors in their literary pursuits.
Authors and literary enthusiasts who wish to partake in ANA's upcoming conventions and events must take prompt action to revalidate their membership. Failure to comply with the revalidation process may lead to limited access to various ANA activities.
In conclusion, ANA remains steadfast in its mission to promote Nigerian literature, support authors, and cultivate a vibrant literary ecosystem. The association encourages all members to comply with the revalidation process within the stipulated time frame. Authors can find the necessary revalidation forms and instructions on the official ANA website or reach out to their respective state chapters for assistance.

By Wole Adedoyin
A groundbreaking academic paper titled "Poetic Protest and Testimony in Endsars Rhythms" has been jointly authored by Jayne I. Owan and Onyekachi Peter Onuoha from the prestigious Department of English and Literary Studies at the University of Calabar. The research delves into the powerful use of art, particularly poetry, as a medium of protest and testimony during the EndSARS movement in Nigeria.
The paper sheds light on the multifaceted role of EndSARS Rhythms, which serves as both an avenue for entertainment and a medium for documenting the causes of brutalization faced by the Nigerian people, as well as questioning the moral fiber of the society. Amidst threats to life, Nigerians turned to poetry as a potent form of protest to challenge police brutality in the country. The study highlights how art plays a significant role in social movements and resistance to police violence, acting as a vehicle for poetic protest and testimony.
The research involves a comprehensive textual analysis of a digital memorial, revealing how EndSARS Rhythms effectively preserves memory through art while documenting the exploitation and brutality suffered by the youth at the hands of the Nigeria Police Force. It unequivocally establishes EndSARS Rhythms as a poetic protest and testimony against police brutality.
One of the fundamental aspects of the paper is the incorporation of several poignant poems from EndSARS Rhythms that have become a literary testimony for victims of police brutality and survivors in Nigeria. Some of the notable poems featured in the research include “State Armed Robbers Squad (SARS)” by Frank Kaliati, “EndSARS! LAWMAKERS, OR LAWBREAKERS” by Olude Peter Sunday, “Talk True” by Nkiru Onyeyaforo, “Guns End Dreams” by Olawumi Oluwasogo, “EndSARS” by David Jonathan Inyang, “Homeland in Pain” by Enyia Lilian Nkechinyere, “How Our Lights were Put off” by Nwokeabia, Ifeanyi John, “Spare us! Spare us! By Adaji Elizabeth Mercy, “In Lekki, Heroes Prevailed…” by Merife, Chisom Victor, “To our heroes up” by Adefeyintola Adesegun, “Requiem for victims of Lekki Massacre '' by Chidiebere Enyia, “The night when doves cried” by Shola Balogun, “Inquest for freedom!” by Blessing Chinenye David’s and others.
Through the powerful poetic chronicles presented in EndSARS Rhythms, the movement emerges as a resolute protest against exploitation and brutality within Nigerian society. The poetic narratives eloquently implicate the Nigerian government and police as agents responsible for the subjugation and exploitation of the country's youth. Each poem serves as a witness against the state, condemning the extra-judicial killing of numerous Nigerians.
The significance of the research paper lies in its portrayal of EndSARS Rhythms as a resilient and artistic response to social injustice and oppression. It underscores how the protest movement effectively utilized poetry as a means of expressing grievances, demanding accountability, and advocating for change. The poems themselves become a collective voice of resilience, providing solace to those affected by police brutality and giving hope for a brighter future.
The co-authors, Jayne I. Owan and Onyekachi Peter Onuoha, commend the courage and creativity displayed by the poets in EndSARS Rhythms, and express hope that this research will contribute to a deeper understanding of the power of art in shaping social movements.

My Encounter with the Late Prof. J.P. Clark – Wole Adedoyin by synw(m) : 10:09 pm On Aug 05

MY ENCOUNTER WITH THE LATE PROF. J.P. CLARK – WOLE ADEDOYIN
My first encounter with the Late Prof. J.P. Clark happened during my secondary school days when we studied his renowned poem, "The Casualties." Little did I know that I would have the opportunity to meet the poet in person.
"The Casualties" by J.P. Clark sparked my love for poetry. During my secondary school years, I also delved into his other two beautiful poems, "Ibadan" and "Abiku," which captivated my heart. I was so taken by these works that I committed them to memory and can still recite them to this day.
As I later participated in the ANA Oyo meetings and the Olaudah Equiano Poetry Reading Sessions of Educare Trust Exhibition Centre, I fondly read Prof. J.P. Clark's poems with the attentive members. His verses resonated deeply with me and inspired me to share the beauty of his words with others.
Fast forward a few years later, the Society of Young Nigerian Writers which I founded in 2016 initiated the esteemed JP Clark Society as a heartfelt honor to the iconic Nigerian poet and playwright, Prof. J.P. Clark.
The JP Clark Literary Society is a dedicated organization committed to preserving and promoting the literary legacy and works Prof. J.P. Clark.

Through various initiatives, the society hopes to celebrate Clark's profound contributions to African literature and culture, organizing events, seminars, and conferences that explore the themes in his poetry and plays. With a focus on fostering critical discussions and supporting aspiring writers, the JP Clark Society stands as a vibrant community that continues to inspire and elevate African literature for present and future generations.
Besides establishing the Society to promote the legacy and works of Prof. J.P. Clark, I also wrote an article highlighting his remarkable body of works. To my surprise, it was this very article that caught the attention of the renowned poet and playwright himself.
One day, as I was blogging on my notebook at home, my phone suddenly rang. When I answered the call, a voice on the other end asked if I knew who was speaking. Not recognizing the voice, I replied with a "no." The voice then revealed itself to be that of Prof. J.P. Clark. I was utterly shocked and overwhelmed to hear from one of Africa's greatest literary figures.
Prof. JP Clark informed me that he had read my article about him and was also aware of the JP Clark Society that I had established. To my excitement, he extended an invitation for me to visit the University of Lagos to discuss the new initiative further.
The very next day, I found myself at the JP Clark Centre of the University of Lagos, where I had the privilege of meeting Prof. J.P. Clark and his Personal Assistant. He had been eagerly awaiting my arrival. During our meeting, he graciously offered me beer and snacks like cashew nuts and groundnuts.
As we sat together, Prof. J.P. Clark attentively reviewed the membership documents of the JP Clark Literary Society. During the discussion, he decided to rename the initiative, now calling it the JP Clark Society. He also took the time to edit and refine the mission, vision, and objectives of the Society, adding his invaluable insights and wisdom to the project.
On that eventful day, Professor J.P. Clark generously donated all of his complete works to the JP Clark Society, taking the time to personally autograph each book before presenting them to me. Alongside this, he expressed his desire to introduce me to Professor Hope Eghagha, who was then the Head of the Department of English at the University of Lagos.
Together, we headed to the Department to meet Prof. Eghagha, but unfortunately, we were informed that he had already stepped out. Disappointed but undeterred, we returned to the JP Clark Centre.
During our time together, Professor J.P. Clark wholeheartedly endorsed the JP Clark Society, and this remarkable visit was even featured in the Nigerian Tribune on April 22nd, 2016.
Before his passing, Professor J.P. Clark reassured us of his intention to provide financial support to the JP Clark Society, ensuring its continued growth and impact.
I was humbled and honored when Professor J.P. Clark commended me for the numerous Literary projects I was undertaking at that time. He also shared insightful stories of his days in the Mbari Club, which was once headed by the late Professor Ulli Beier.
Today, the JP Clark Society is taking strides towards its mission. We have already established a vibrant Facebook group, where members enthusiastically share articles, news, papers, and essays related to the life and legacy of the late Professor J.P. Clark. Additionally, we are currently working on creating a blog that will showcase his exceptional works and feature articles about his life and accomplishments.
Through the JP Clark Society, we are committed to preserving and promoting the life and works of Professor J.P. Clark, keeping his memory alive for generations to come.
As we move forward, we are hopeful that this year will see the JP Clark Society holding physical meetings, fostering a sense of community and collaboration among enthusiasts and scholars alike.
May the soul of Professor JP Clark rest in perfect peace. Amen.

DWAN Advises Chimamanda Adichie to Handle Nigerian Politicians with Caution by synw(m) : 12:13 am On Aug 06

DWAN ADVISES CHIMAMANDA ADICHIE TO HANDLE NIGERIAN POLITICIANS WITH CAUTION
The Democratic Writers Association of Nigeria (DWAN) has issued a cautionary statement to renowned author Chimamanda Adichie following her recent appearance at the proceedings of the Presidential Election Petition Court in Abuja. The acclaimed writer was seen alongside the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, and his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed. While DWAN acknowledged Adichie's right to participate in political activities, the association urges her to tread softly and be mindful of potential implications on her reputation and the sanctity of her literary endeavors.
Chimamanda Adichie, celebrated globally for her literary prowess and advocacy for social justice, has been an influential voice in Nigeria and beyond. Her works have inspired millions and earned her numerous accolades. DWAN acknowledged that public figures have a role to play in promoting civic engagement, but it is crucial to strike a balance between political participation and maintaining the independence and credibility of one's artistic pursuits.
DWAN's concern stems from the sensitive nature of Nigerian politics, which can be polarizing and fraught with controversies. As a respected literary icon, Adichie's association with politicians, regardless of their affiliations, may lead to perceptions of bias or compromise her artistic integrity. It is essential for Adichie to be aware of the potential consequences of such affiliations on her reputation and the broader literary community in Nigeria.
DWAN Coordinator, Wole Adedoyin, emphasized the importance of safeguarding the autonomy of writers and artists in democratic societies. Wole Adedoyin stated, "While we support the democratic principles of active citizen participation, we also urge our fellow writers to exercise caution when engaging with politicians. Our literary community's credibility is at stake, and we must uphold the values of unbiased expression and creative freedom."
DWAN finally urged Chimamanda Adichie to consider the diversity of her readership, which spans across various political spectrums. Remaining impartial and detached from partisan affiliations is crucial to maintain her wide appeal and continue fostering open dialogue among her readers.
