WRITERS CONDEMN BRUTAL ATTACK ON NATIONAL SECRETARY IZUNNA OKAFOR, DEMAND SWIFT JUSTICE
The Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) has vehemently condemned the reprehensible attack on its National Secretary, Mr. Izunna Okafor, by officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Anambra State. The incident occurred last week as Okafor, a dedicated reporter with 247ureports.com, was returning from Nnewi after covering the Anambra South Rally of the Soludo Ambassadors.
A group of ten NSCDC officers reportedly assaulted Mr. Okafor, accusing the media of being a source of problems in Nigeria. Shockingly, the officers not only physically attacked the journalist but also brandished firearms, threatening to shoot him. It was only due to the intervention and pleas of fellow passengers that a potentially tragic situation was averted.
Mr. Okafor, who sustained injuries during the attack, has since spoken out about the horrifying experience.
The SYNW under the leadership of Wole Adedoyin has expressed its deep concern for the safety and well-being of journalists who play a crucial role in society by providing objective and timely information.
The SYNW commended the prompt response of the Anambra State Commandant of the NSCDC, Mr. Edwin Osuala, for initiating a full-scale investigation into the matter. The SYNW urged the authorities to ensure a thorough and impartial inquiry, holding accountable anyone found guilty of wrongdoing in accordance with the law.
According to the statement, “Freedom of the press is a cornerstone of democracy, and any attack on journalists undermines this fundamental pillar of society.”
The SYNW therefore, called on relevant stakeholders, including human rights organizations, to join in condemning this assault and advocating for justice.
In the statement, SYNW President, Wole Adedoyin emphasized the need for security agencies to respect the rights of journalists and citizens, stating that such acts of aggression are not only an attack on individuals but also an assault on the principles of democracy and the rule of law.
The SYNW called on the NSCDC and other security agencies to institute measures that will prevent a recurrence of such incidents, ensuring the safety of journalists and upholding the constitutional rights of citizens.
“The SYNW stands in solidarity with Mr. Izunna Okafor and all journalists who face threats and attacks in the course of their duty. The SYNW will closely monitor the investigation and collaborate with relevant organizations to ensure justice is served.” The statement ended.
