President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday, May 8 said there was no cause for alarm over his absence because it would not affect the smooth running of government.

He disclosed this in a tweet on his Twitter handle @MBuhari in the late hours of Monday.

”As I noted earlier, I have absolute confidence that government will continue to run smoothly while I’m away. God bless the Federal Republic,” Buhari said.

Femi Adesina, a special adviser on media and publicity to Buhari,, said the president’s trip is a follow-up medical consultation with his doctors.

Adesina added that the president was supposed to travel on Sunday, May 7 afternoon but could not because of the release of 82 Chibok girls who arrived Abuja that same day.

He said the president had transmitted the vacation letter to the National Assembly in accordance with Section 145 of the constitution,

”The president wishes to assure all Nigerians that there is no cause for worry. He is very grateful for the prayers and good wishes of the people, and hopes they would continue to pray for the peace and unity of the nation.

”The length of the president’s stay in London will be determined by the doctors. Government will continue to function normally under the able leadership of the vice-president.

”President Buhari has transmitted letters about the trip to the Senate and the House of Representatives, in compliance with Section 145 (1) of the 1999 Constitution,” the statement added.

ThisDay reports that the senior special assistant, legislative matters (House of Representatives) Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila however said Buhari is fit to seek re-election in 2019 elections.

According to him: “From what I have seen at close range, my boss is quite fit for the 2019 electoral battle.’

”President Buhari’s fitness was played upon in 2015 general election. He survived the campaign rigour, won the election and is on the verge of taking Nigeria to the promised land.

”Buhari is quite alright, he is fit to pass through a familiar terrain, and its human to fall sick. I am highly confident he would get better.”

‘He added: ‘Those who have legitimate ambitions should step forward, but they should also have at the back of their minds the fatal consequences of such misadventure in 2015.

”He also said that the president’s two years in office had been “eventful and fruitful.

”His ability to degrade the insurgency was a landmark in the history of this country.”

Sumaila also urged Nigerians to continue support the government so that it can accomplish the dividends of democracy.

He left the country on Sunday, May 7 after he met with the vice president Professor Yemi Osinbajo, Senate president Bukola Saraki and Speaker Yakubu Dogara.

He said the Federal Government and Nigerians were fed up with excuses from the DisCos over their shortcomings and berated them for lack of “corporate governance” in their relationship with their consumers - Nigerians.

The minister told the DisCos to stick to the terms of their licences and implement their remittance obligations without any more complaints.

Fashola spoke in the Plateau State capital during the monthly meeting of stakeholders in the power sector, hosted by the Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC) at their NIPP Injection substation at Lamingo Dam.

According to the minister, who chaired the 15th monthly meeting, “the monthly meeting is to provide opportunity for stakeholders to meet and brainstorm on challenges and ways to improve power supply to the satisfaction of all Nigerians.”

He rejected the excuses of the DisCos and the various attempts by them to justify why they have not satisfied their consumers.

Fashola told the DisCos: “What the public need to know and which your statement is silent about is that you are entitled to fully recover your cost and investment by law. And this is the function of how tariff are also calculated. So if you make your investment, the cost is passed through to consumers.

“Therefore, if government holds 40 per cent of the shares of DisCos on behalf of the state and local governments and the Nigerian people, I believe that the government has the duty to ensure that you buy your parts and equipment at reasonable and competitive market prices and not through inflated contracts to relatives as we have seen in some DisCos in respect of which NEC will take a decision in due course and sanction those who are involved.

“You also issued a statement regarding the declaration of eligible customers, your statement claimed that this provision which allows certain classes of consumers to deal directly with generation companies is premature and will result in extra cost to the consumers.

“Your statement is however silent on the inability of some of your members to invest in feeders and distribution equipment to get the power to the consumers, this has led to the emergence of the terminology of ‘load rejection’ for an economy that does not have enough power and enough crude.

“Your statement that money does not address the illogic standing in the ways of the consumers seeking to get by himself what the service providers or DisCos have failed or was unable to give him.

“As for the alarm and the panic which your statement seeks to raise about the increase eligible customer declaration is not compulsory and applied to only those who were left to benefit from it.

“And they are in the position, I believe, to decide whether the tariff of over N60 per kilowatt hour through generation by diesel which they currently use is preferable to investing in the distribution facilities that give them power at a lower term. What is important is that the law is followed; consultations are held with those prescribed before decisions are taken.

“Rather than complain about old infrastructure, I wish to remind you that nobody forced you to buy these assets, and that you knew what you were buying when you bought them.

“As for the N709 billion intervention, let me say that it is consistent with our government policy and determination to enable businesses flourish and it was intended to save the GenCos and the gas companies and their financiers who were providing service from collapse.

“Your statement did not tell members of the public that these companies were not getting paid because you were not remitting all what you are supposed to be remitting to the market operators.”

12-year-old Rajgauri Pawar has demonstrated she is smarter than Albert Einstein or Professor Stephen Hawking. The schoolgirl from Cheshire in Northern England scored a high 162 in the famous Mensa Intelligence Quotient (IQ) test.
She took the test in London and her score qualifies her for elite British Mensa membership of high IQ talents across the world.

Although Einstein never took the test, experts have said his score would be 160, the same score as Hawking.

A spokeswoman for British Mensa told Xinhua Tuesday: "Rajgauri's score of 162 certainly puts her at the top end of the top one percent of Mensa scores across the world."

To put her score into context, the Mensa benchmark needed to be considered a genius is set at 140, with only a few thousand people in the world ever exceeding the magical 160.

Rajgauri told local media in a Britain: "I was a little nervous before the test, but it was fine and I'm really pleased to have done so well."

Her father, Surajkumar Pawar said, "This wouldn't have been possible without the efforts of her teachers and the support which my daughter enjoys every day at school."

Her school, Altrincham Grammar School for Girls in South Manchester, is also very proud of Rajgauri for her incredible achievement.

Her maths teacher, Andrew Berry, said: "Everybody is delighted. She is a very well-liked student and we all expect great things from her."

According to the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), 624 examination centres have being made available for the 1,731,039 candidates of the 2017 UTME.

According to Vanguard, the Registrar of JAMB, Prof Is-haq Oloyede while briefing journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, May 9, said also that they were prepared for the 321 blind candidates who will participate in the examination.

Oloyede also explained that in a bid to curb exam malpractice, Close Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras will be mounted in all the centres and adequate security arrangement have been made.

The spokesperson said: “We registered a number that has never been done in the entire 39 years of the existence of JAMB within a time frame Nigerians were skeptical about.”

An undergraduate of the Institute of Continuing Education, University of Lagos, Akoka, identified simply as Adetokunbo, has alleged that some operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Lagos State Police Command, attacked him and robbed him of his school fees in the Okota area of the state.

Adetokunbo, a 200-level student of Philosophy, told PUNCH Metro on Tuesday that the four policemen accused him of being a Yahoo boy (Internet fraudster) because he was seen with an iPhone.


He added that the men, who had earlier arrested two other suspects that were in a car, drove them around Lagos roads.

The victim said the men later took the two other suspects to an Automated Teller Machine, where they were forced to withdraw N100,000 each before they were dropped off at the Oworonshoki area of the state.


He said he was released on the Third Mainland Bridge after his N70,000 school fees was forcefully taken from him.

The victim said he was not pained by the torture, but the fact that he would have to defer his schooling as he could not raise the money again.

He said, “I am a clothier, but I am also undergoing part time studies at UNILAG. I am in 200 level. To raise part of my school fees, which was already due, I had to sell some of my property.

“I had gone to deliver some clothes to a customer in Okota sometime in April and was returning on a motorcycle around 3pm, when I observed that there was panic in the area. The motorcycle rider that took me almost threw me into a gutter.

“I was still chiding him when the operatives approached me and said I was a Yahoo boy. They held me by the trousers as I protested and struggled with them, asking for my offence. I pushed one of them away. They all descended on me and started hitting me.

“They put me in handcuffs and threw me inside their car. The beating was much. They were slapping me from different sides. I told them to check my ID card or allow me to make a call. They didn’t listen to me or even check my phone. They asked who my father was that made me use an iPhone, which they could not afford.”

Adetokunbo said he observed there were two other men in the car, adding that he gathered that they had just obtained their visas with a plan to travel abroad when they were arrested.

He said the two men, who were also accused of being Internet fraudsters, were searched by the officials and their ATM cards seized.

He said the operatives, who had police-crested guns and handcuffs, tore his shorts while attempting to search his back pocket where he had his wallet.

 “They took N70,000 from me and took the other guys to the ATM to withdraw money, which I gathered was N100,000 each. They released them at Oworonsoki.

“My pain in all of these was not even the beating, but the fact that I had to defer my education because of the money they collected from me,” he said.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the police authorities had already contacted Adetokunbo, inviting him for a meeting.

 He, however, said although he could identify the officers, he was afraid for his life.

“While I was in the car with them, they pointed a gun to my head and said they could waste me and nothing would happen. I am afraid for my life, but I want those men brought to book. The police can find them in the Gowon Estate, Egbeda, and Okota, Isolo, areas of the state,” he added.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, said the police had started looking into the case

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has said that it has set up 624 centres for the over 1.7million candidates that will be writing this Saturday’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) nationwide.

The Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, stated this on Tuesday while speaking to journalists in Abuja about the board’s preparation for the exams.

Oloyede also disclosed that 321 blind candidates would participate.

He added that efforts had been made to curtail examination fraud, as Close Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras, will be mounted in all the various centres and adequate security arrangement will be provided.

Oloyede, however, noted that many candidates and parents have not recovered from what he described as “technophobia”, the fear of technology, as they still think that the Computer-Based Testing (CBT) method make things difficult.
