When news broke towards the end of last week that the marriage of actress, Mercy Aigbe to Lanre Gentry was about to hit the rock, even with pictures showing her battered face, many people hoped that it was a publicity stunt.

However, as Saturday Beats learnt, the marriage may have fallen apart irretrievably.

In a chat with her estranged husband Lanre, he insisted that he had never beaten his wife. He further claimed that the actress has mental illness which he said is affecting her.

Gentry revealed that Mercy had been battling the illness for a while but that he had always been there for her all through the years they had been together.

He said, “I am not fighting with Mercy, she is the one plotting how to get out of the marriage and I am not a party to that because I have never touched her and I will never do so. She has mental problem and that is what is disturbing her for now. There is a place I normally go to help her get herbal concoction to stabilise her condition, I would go there soon to get the herbal remedy for her. I don’t care about whatever anybody writes, I have granted an interview with the person that I trust.”

He said the mum of two had been unfaithful to him, adding that she left his house for over a month.

He said, “Mercy is committing bigamy because she is still married to me and another man has rented an apartment for her. She has left my house for almost a month and she has been camped with the man. Marriage is not by force, I cannot force her to stay with me because I am not handicapped. She spends my money. The car she uses, I bought it for her and it cost me about N9.8m, I have the receipt with me. I don’t have anything against Mercy but she should continue with whatever she has against me.”

During the week, it was reported that the actress had obtained a restraining order against her husband. But in his words, Gentry regarded that restraining order as a “kangaroo injunction.”

“I don’t have any issue with Mercy. She has found a better offer than the love I give her so she wants to move on. I have helped her career and put her in the limelight but now she believes she needs another man that she can dupe. I have God by my side. I still saw Mercy during the week, Wednesday to be precise. It was reported that she obtained a restraining order against me but the truth is that it is a kangaroo injunction. Is it possible for the court to restrain me from seeing my child or a person that took my property out of my house? Is it possible? I learnt she went to the police but they did not lend her a listening ear so she decided to use the judiciary and we would meet there. She went to the Lagos State government and was told that they prefer to reconcile marriages instead of dissolving them. I have never beaten Mercy and I would never do such,” he said.

Saturday Beats reached out to the actress, a source from her camp who spoke on the condition of anonymity said that it was laughable that Mr. Gentry would claim that the actress has mental problems. The source said that the estranged husband turned the actress to his cash cow.

“It is a big lie, the truth is that Lanre Gentry has been living off Mercy’s hard earned money. In fact, Mercy is his walking ATM. He does not do anything and to make matters worse, he does not pay the children’s school fees.

“He knows within himself that Mercy can afford to get a house in Lekki if she wishes to do so. He is just a pathetic liar and he should find another angle. Mercy does not have mental illness and if he wants to dent her image, he should look for another angle to do so,” the source said.

On her part, Mercy maintained that she would rather remain silent on the matter till the court decides the fate of her husband who has been charged with wife battery allegations.

When asked if he still loves his wife, the husband who has a child with the actress simply said, “For now I cannot say that I love my wife but before, I loved her.”

Fresh report has it that the Islamist terrorist group, Boko Haram, has released a batch of ore than 80 of the Chibok high school girls who were abducted in mid-April 2014. A top military source has revealed to SaharaReporers.
According to a source said the release of the 80 abducted school girls came after further negotiations between the Islamist group and the Muhammadu administration. The source he was not in a position to disclose the terms of an agreement that led to today's mass release of the Chibok school girls.

Our source revealed that that the 82 girls who just regained their freedom are currently in Banki town in Borno state awaiting airlift to an unknown destination.

The source added that once the girls are secured in a new location they would be debriefed, undergo a psycological and medical test and then be reunited with their families.

THE Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has urged prospective candidates for its Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to crosscheck the data on their registration forms for the last time on May 6.

The board’s Head of Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, made the call in an interview with the News Agency if Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Lagos.

The call comes ahead of the 2017 UTME scheduled for May 13 across 633 centres nationwide.

NAN reports that registration of candidates for the examination was closed by the board by 12 midnight on Friday, May 5.

According to Benjamin, the call for the crosschecking of data by prospective candidates was to ensure total inclusiveness.

He added that the board intended to ensure that no candidate was left out during the examination due to one reason or the other.

“All candidates who desire to do any change on their registration details are urged to do so today as the platform closes finally by 9 p.m. of Saturday May 6.

“We are giving all the candidates the last chance to ensure that everyone is carried along and provided with equal opportunity.

“We also want to avoid a situation whereby candidates will have cause to complain of one incident or the other just before the commencement of the examination,’’ Benjamin said.

President of Ijaw Monitoring Group, Joseph Evah, has said former President Olusegun Obasanjo is hiding the truth about his disagreement with ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

He declared that Obasanjo was angry with Jonathan for not fulfilling a secret deal the duo had.

Evah, a former National Publicity Secretary of the Ijaw National Congress, dared Obasanjo to open up and prove him wrong.

Obasanjo was critical of Jonathan in a new book, “Against The Run of Play”, written by the Chairman of ThisDay Editorial Board, Olusegun Adeniyi.

Among other comments, Obasanjo said Jonathan did not heed his advice not to seek a second term in office in line with the agreement he had reached with prominent Northern leaders.

But Evah told Punch that Obasanjo, who nominated Jonathan for the positions of governor, vice president, and president, could not say he did not know the man he nominated into those positions.

His words “Our position is that it is not fair for Obasanjo, who was the one that nominated him to now be rubbishing Jonathan. He is not diplomatic at all. As a former president, we expected him to be diplomatic.

“There is something else he has against Jonathan. He is not telling us the real qualities of Jonathan. Jonathan’s qualities are more than that.

“So, if he did not see the qualities of Jonathan, why did he nominate him in the first place to be president of the country?

“His comments against Jonathan are unfair. He might have something against Jonathan. Maybe they had an agreement that Jonathan did not meet. That is what Obasanjo is angry about.

“He is not giving us the true position. He cannot tell us that Jonathan is incompetent. Let him tell us the hidden agreement that Jonathan did not fulfill, which is making him to abuse the former president.”

Wole Soyinka, renowned playwright and professor on Saturday slammed Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike for ‘lying’ that the recently recovered loots from Ikoyi building, Lagos belong to the State.

Speaking at the opening of his Vision of the Child Art Exhibition at Freedom Park, Lagos, Soyinka said it was time to legislate against the detractors of efforts to rid the country of corruption.

According to Soyinka, people who create distraction in the fight against corruption should be prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

“When we talk about corruption, is it not time we legislate against detractors, who deliberately create distraction.

“Say, for instance, the money just found in Lagos. One governor (Wike) claimed that the money belongs to his state government, claiming a proceed from the sale of some turbines and so on.

“It is a criminal act of distraction. He knew very well that he was lying, that the money was not his, but belongs to someone else.

“Obviously, acting in the interest of those accused of corruption that to me is connivance and collaboration with corrupt people. I think such people should be criminalised by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.”

The new Confederation of African Football (Caf) President, Ahmad, says he has refused to accept a salary from African football's governing body. His election in March ended Cameroonian Issa Hayatou's 29-year reign.
"I've refused a Caf salary for the simple reason it doesn't respect good administration," he told BBC Sport. "The salaries of all Caf employees, from administrators to the executive committee and president, all have to be transparent."

The 57-year-old from Madagascar held his first senior Caf meetings on Monday ahead of the Fifa Congress on Thursday 11 May.

Key among the topics being discussed are how to reform Caf.

"The reform of the administration is a very important point - everyone must know what is happening" said Ahmad. "First we must review the standards of management so that we can apply the reforms.

Ahmad, who goes by a single name, says there is much work to be done - in lots of areas - to make Caf work "as it should.
