A Federal High Court sitting in Asaba, Delta State, has asked the Department of State Services to tender an unreserved apology to the son of the South-South Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Mr Tareri Avwomakpa, over his illegal arrest by DSS operatives in February.

Justice T.B. Adegoke gave the ruling on Tuesday in a suit filed by Tareri, a Warri-based legal practitioner against the DG of Department of State Services and the Delta State Director, DSS, following his arrest and detention over a message calling for support for the General Overseer, Omega Fire Ministries, Apostle Johnson Suleman.

Operatives of DSS had in February arrested and detained Tareri over an alleged message sent via a social media platform, WhatsApp, wherein he called on Christians in the country to support and accompany Suleman to honour the invitation by the DSS at its head office in Abuja.

Justice Adegoke while delivering his ruling on the case, held that Tareri 's arrest was unlawful and unconstitutional even as he awarded N250,000 damages against the DSS director-general and the Delta state director of the security agency.

According to the judgment, the court ordered DSS authorities to write a formal letter of apology to the claimant for a breach of his constitutional human rights.

Tareri dedicated the judgment to Nigerians who had been killed, maimed and all those "currently suffering oppression for being Christians across the country".

The Federal Government has said that some of the schoolgirls released by Boko Haram terrorists over the weekend would need surgery for various ailments.

Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Jummai Alhassan, who said this at a press conference in Abuja, said the girls were undergoing treatment that would take a few weeks to complete.

82 of the girls were released after negotiations involving the Swiss Government, the Red Cross and the Federal Government on one side and the terror sect on the other.

21 of the girls were released in October 2016, but had yet to be reunited with their parents.

The minister said results of the medical tests so far conducted on the 82 Chibok girls, who were kidnapped from the Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, in April 2014, had shown that some of the youngsters needed to be operated upon.

She stated that the medical screening, being carried out on the girls, would be completed between two and three weeks. “The 82 Chibok girls are currently undergoing medical screening in Abuja. Some of them need surgery; this should be completed in two to three weeks,” she said.

Alhassan stated that before the arrival of the 82 girls, the Federal Government had been taking care of the 21 previously released girls and four babies.

She added that the 21 girls came back in bad shape and spent almost two months under medical care and were handed over to her on December 22, 2016. The minister explained that the parents of the 21 girls were reunited with their daughters within one week of their return in October 2016.

“Upon return, all the 21 Chibok girls said they wanted to go back to school, but that they didn’t want to go to school in Chibok,” she said.

According to her, the girls travelled to Chibok for Christmas in December 2016 as soon as they emerged from medical care and spent two weeks there.

She said although they were scheduled to travel to Chibok again for Easter, security situation at that time was not conducive enough, so their parents were invited to Abuja.

Alhassan disclosed that it was the choice of the Chibok girls and their parents to stay under the care of the Federal Government in Abuja.

She added that arrangements were already being made to transport the parents of the new 82 girls to Abuja once they identified their daughters among the pictures of the girls sent to Chibok.

She stated, “The parents and the 82 girls will soon unite in a couple of days, but it will have to be well planned. It is not going to be easy to transport all 82 parents. That is 164 persons. Transportation and security have to be provided because the number is quite large, and you all know how sensitive Borno State is at the moment”.

The 21 girls, who were released in October, 2016, had been re-united with the 82 girls. “Yesterday (Wednesday), we took the first set of 21 girls to visit the 82 girls at the medical facilities where the 82 girls are being treated to reassure them that all is well,” she said.

The Lagos State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps says the 12 officials involved in the alleged torture and robbery of two employees of an oil company in the state have been suspended and taken into custody.

The command said the suspension took effect from Thursday, May 11, 2017, adding that a panel had been set up to investigate the conduct of the operatives.

It was also learnt that the victims – a tanker driver, Lawal Amobi, and the company manager, Tolu Oyinloye – had been invited to appear before the panel.

It was reported that the officials had flagged down a diesel-laden tanker driven by Amobi around 6pm last Friday along Wilmer Road, Ajegunle, asking him to produce his waybill and operating licence issued by the Department of Petroleum Resources.

The driver said he produced the waybill, but the latter was not with him.

On insistence of the officials to see the licence, he called the manager, who brought a photocopy.

It was said that the men, apart from inflicting injuries on Amobi’s face and back, robbed him of two phones and a sum of N35,000, while the manager was dispossessed of N70,000, a wristwatch and an Infinix phone.

According to Punch, the officials shot at the victims while they were trying to escape after being beaten up for refusing to pay a N5,000 bribe.

Amobi had said, “The manager begged them with N500. They collected the money and entered into their van with the waybill and the photocopy of the DPR licence. We told them that there was still diesel in the truck and we had to tender the waybill if any other security agent stopped us. They just zoomed off in their van with number plate, CD 167 A01.

“As we followed the van, they suddenly parked on the Mile 2 Bridge and came down from the vehicle. They attacked me with blows, boots and the butts of their rifles. They vowed to kill us. One of them collected a Techno phone I was using to make calls, while another dipped his hand into my pocket, took my second phone, iPhone 4, and the N32,000 on me,” Amobi had said.

It was reported that another team of NSCDC assaulted another tanker driver, identified as Abolore Ajiroba, on the day, while the incident was reported at the Trinity Police Division.

The spokesperson for the NSCDC, Lagos State Command, Kehinde Bada, said the two teams comprised 12 officials. She said they had been suspended and detained, adding that a disciplinary panel had been set up to investigate the matter.

She said, “The teams involved have been identified and a panel has been set up. The two victims (Amobi and Oyinloye) have been invited. All the 12 officials involved have been placed on suspension effective from today (Thursday) and their suspension letters have been given to them while investigation is still ongoing. They are presently in the cell.”

"Most of these guys are hungry, and they are not interested in reading your contract. You type a contract for an upcoming artist, of 10 pages. Hes not interested in reading the contract. All he's interested in for you to put him on the camera and let him shoot a video. Put them in a studio to record music. And he wants to see himself in South Africa, London. That's what he interested in. Once he gets that, he's satisfied.

The next thing is how he's going to do without you and he's going to forget your contract. So its high time we, the record label owners, try to make these guys go through their contracts. Read it for them line by line, get your lawyer sit with them and they should get their lawyer or someone from their own angle. Because some of them don't have family when they come to you, but all of a sudden, when they become huge and big, they have families and friends. They come to fight for them.

So I think we should put that in play when they are being signed, They should bring that their friends and their families from the initial stage, to come and help them read the contract, before you invest. So when you now make it and you think you can do without the person, not in a proper way or fulfilling your obligations, trust me, even God in heaven is not going to be happy with you.

So I think the advice is that we the record label owners should also make sure that they know what they are signing this time, before they go into it. Don't try to pretend to make them fell like you are tying them down, you are tying yourself down because at the end of the day, they will fight you, you will go to court. So lets do that from the beginning and settle it before we move on."

The groom is the Sarkin Sudan of Gombe, in Gombe state. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Gen. Garba Wushishi performed the symbolic ceremony of handing over Halimat at 2.45 pm in marriage to Abdullahi.

Gov. Ibrahim Dankwanbo of Gombe state received the bride on behalf of the groom, who hails from the state.
A special prayer by Sheik Kabiru Gombe was offered for the couple. He stressed the significance of marriage in Islam and called on the bride to submissive and loyal to her husband.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, including his wife, Patience led the galaxy of big political and military figures that graced the occasion..
