AIG wants police to key into President Buhari’s anti-corruption campaign by Whatelse(m) : 12:51 am On Oct 05

The Assistant Inspector General of
Police (AIG), Zone 11, Mr. Dan Bature,
has advised officers and of Nigeria
Police to key into anti-corruption
crusade of President Muhammad
Buhari.
Bature made this known during his
official visit to the Police Command in
Ondo on Tuesday.
The AIG said that police should be a
major stakeholder in the fight, saying
that discipline, which was the
hallmark of the present
administration, must be the focal
point of police.
According to him, there must be high
level of uprightness, transparency in
the endeavours of the force.
He added that police must be indulged
in intelligence policing, saying that
police should not relax on their duties.
Bature reiterated the ban on road
blocks, advising them to desist from
checking of vehicles and customs
papers except on suspicion.
The AIG noted that police should
ensure safety on highways and not to
disturb motorists.
On Nov. 26 governorship election, the
AIG assured the state of police ability
to overwhelm any challenge that could
come up.
Earlier, the Commissioner of Police in
the state, Mrs Hilda Ibifuro-Harrison,
said that the state was relatively
peaceful because of high level of
intellectuality.
Ibifuro-Harrison said that there was
constant relevant divulgence of
information in curbing crime rate.
She, therefore, said that there were
insufficient patrol vehicles in the
command, considering the
forthcoming Nov.26 governorship
election in the state.
According to her, the command also
needs increase of manpower without
which the command may be
incapacitated.

Somalis are returning to Kismayo in
a "voluntary" process to a homeland
still stricken by war, drought, and
hardship.
As well as the 16,000 new returnees,
Kismayo hosts some 40,000 people
displaced internally
Kismayo, Somalia - The camp sprawls
across a grey sand dune overlooking the
Indian Ocean. A multitude of small
shacks lashed together quickly by hand
using whatever could be found:
crumpled sheet-metal, acacia branches
and cardboard. Children play in heaps
of rubbish.
More than 16,000 people are living here,
destitute and stranded, on the fringes of
Kismayo, a port town in Jubaland state,
on Somalia's southern frontier.
"There is nothing, there are no good
services here… We don't have a house,
no education, no health, no work. We
don't know where to go and where to
find what we need," said Ahmed
Mohamed Abukar, a father who returned
to Kismayo - his hometown - in
February.
Abukar arrived in a truck with his wife
and six children, crossing the wild
border from northeastern Kenya where
his family had lived as refugees for
seven years in Dadaab, the world's
largest refugee camp.

Reps worried over rate of maternal mortality in Nigeria by Whatelse(m) : 7:29 pm On Oct 05

The House of Representatives has called on
governments at all levels to make qualitative
antenatal services provided by trained and
skilled health workers at primary, secondary and
tertiary health facilities, free and accessible.
Rising from its plenary on Tuesday, the green
chamber of the National Assembly also urged
the federal government to take a firm stand in
aiding maternal child health in Nigeria and
specifically, tackle challenges related to health
and nutrition, education, agriculture, livelihoods,
gender equality and other vital issues.
In a motion moved by Hon. Aishatu Jibril Dukku,
Member representing Dukku/Nafada Federal
Constituency of Gombe State, the House
identified “some social-economic factors that
contribute to maternal mortality and birth related
injuries, to include, ineffective government
policies on maternal health; poverty and
malnutrition; ill-equipped hospitals and gender
inequalities”.
The House also identified “cultural issues, such
as pressure on girls to marry early and give birth
to numerous children, preferences to deliver
children at home and mistrust of family planning
services as factors that aid maternal death”.
It could be recalled that a report by the United
Nations International Children’s Emergency
Fund (UNICEF) indicated that Nigeria loses
about 145 women of childbearing age every day,
during pregnancies, from causes that could have
been prevented.
The alarming report according to Hon. Dukku,
further “states that the country loses about
2300 under five year olds every day”.
