Nigerian singer Azadus has praised President Buhari for stabilizing the economy even in the face of brutal terrorist attacks by the deadly Boko Haram sect and Biafra’s agitations to secede.

The singer who spoke to showtime in a new interview, said;

“We must continue to give it up for President Buhari because if the country had become a ‘free for all’ as the Boko Haram sect had intended it to be, who would have the guts to perform on stage, who will be able to go out to watch the concerts?”
Azadus also praised Nigerian artistes for creating songs that are ‘friendly to the ears and minds’, even with the dwindling economy.

Lt Gen. Victor Malu, a former Chief of Army Staff who served during the adminstration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo is dead.

PUNCH reports that Malu died early Monday morning, October 9, at a Cairo hospital.

He was said to have travelled to Cairo, the capital of Egypt two weeks ago for medical check-up.

Bem Adoor, who is a cousin to the late General, told PUNCH Malu was 70 years old.

He was born on January 15, 1947, in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue state.

The Federal High Court in Abuja has discharged the post-no-debit order it placed on 24 bank accounts belonging to the Peace Corps of Nigeria since June 23, 2017.

Justice John Tsoho in a ruling on Tuesday, October 10, vacated the order after upholding the motion filed by the group and its national commandant, Mr. Dickson Akoh, who are also being prosecuted by the Federal Government before the same court.

The judge had placed the post-no-debit on the accounts on the 24 accounts on June 23, following an ex parte motion by the prosecution.

But Akor and the group, through a motion filed on July 5, 2017, challenged the order made by the court, accusing the prosecution of “suppressing and misrepresenting facts” in the ex parte motion through which the prosecution obtained the order.

Justice Tsoho held in his ruling on Tuesday that the prosecution fail to controvert the allegation by the applicants.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday criminalised sex between a man and his underage wife provided the woman files a complaint within a year, a landmark order that fixes the age of consent at 18 for all girls.

“If a minor wife complains of forced sexual intercourse within a year of marriage, police needs to take action,” the court said hearing a petition that called for scrapping of a provision in the rape law that allowed a man to have sex with his underage wife even without consent.

The order also comes at a time when the court is hearing petitions calling for marital rape to be declared a crime.

The verdict would have prospective effect and have no bearing on marriages already solemnised, the court said, addressing concerns of the government.


Defending the rape law exception, the government had told the court during an earlier hearing that India had 23 million child brides and criminalising the “consummation of the marriages” as rape would not be appropriate.

The President of the World Bank Group, Jim Yong Kim, said on Thursday that the bank had concentrated on the northern region of Nigeria in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s request.Kim and the Managing Director, International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde, who spoke at separate press conferences in Washington DC, United States, also advised Buhari to invest in

things that would enhance economic growth.

Kim said, “You know, in my very first meeting with President Buhari he said specifically that he would like us to shift our focus to the northern region of Nigeria and we’ve done that. Now, it has been very difficult. The work there has been very difficult.

“I think Nigeria, of course, has suffered from the dropping oil prices. I think things are just now getting better. But the conversation we need to have with Nigeria, I think, is in many ways related to the theme that I brought to the table just this past week, which is investment in human capital. The percentage of the Gross Domestic Product that Nigeria spends on healthcare is less than one percent.”

He added, “Despite that, there is so much turbulence in the northern part of the country, and there is the hit that was taken from the drop in the oil prices. Nigeria has to think ahead and

invest in its people. Investing in the things that will allow Nigeria to be a thriving, rapidly growing economy in the future is what the country has to focus on right now.”

Kim also said, “Focusing on the northern part of Nigeria, we hope that as commodity prices stabilise and oil prices come back up, the economy will grow a bit more. But very, very much important is the need to focus on what the drivers of growth in the future will be.”

According to the World Bank boss, the bank will invest in human capital in other parts of Africa in order to prepare the continent for the next phase of growth.

Lagarde, in her remarks, said Sub-Saharan African countries, including Nigeria, had posted suboptimal

growth in recent times.

The growth figures, she said, were far too small considering the huge demographic potential of Nigeria and other countries in the region.

As a result, she said the IMF would be engaging ministers of finance and central bank governors from the region attending the annual World Bank and IMF meetings on how they could boost and stabilise economic growth.

Lagarde said, “The Sub-Saharan Africa is one region of the world where growth is suboptimal. Those countries grow at an average growth of 2.5 per cent. That is too low for the demographic expansion of the region.”

The IMF managing director said emerging and developing economies must invest more in their economies through infrastructural spending, strengthening safety nets, allowing women more access to the labour market and carrying structural reforms.

The Nigerian Army has announced the commencement of Operation Crocodile Smile, a military exercise, at Takwa Bay Island in Lagos state, on Friday.

The Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, said the increase in crimes in coastal areas compelled the army to step up training and operations in the amphibious environment. According to him, the ‘order of battle’ 2016 provides for amphibious battalion on the island to keep the coastal area of Lagos state safe.

He said: “A detachment of Nigerian army has since been stationed on the island; more army presence will also be felt soon on the island and other parts of the country in line with the 2016 order of battle as fund becomes available.”

The army chief recalled that the first phase of the exercise which took place between August and September 2016 in Abia, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Imo and Rivers states recorded tremendous success.

He said troops degraded activities of militants and illegal oil bunkering, destruction of kidnappers’ den and rescue of kidnapped victims, destruction of cultists’ camps, among others.

Buratai, however, said the success of Exercise Crocodile Smile I in those states pushed some criminal elements to other parts of the country, thus necessitating “readjustment” of the area of operation of the second phase in 2017.

He added that it was in that regard that the exercise was being conducted in the South-South and South West regions.

He noted that it was being done with sister agencies to sharpen troops’ combat skills on land and amphibious environment and consolidate on gains achieved in the first phase.

Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley is ready to end his controversial reign after putting the Premier League club up for sale on Monday.

Ashley has been a polarising figure at Newcastle since taking over at St James’ Park in 2007 and the sports retail tycoon has decided now is the time to step down.

Newcastle have been relegated from the Premier League twice in the Ashley era, with the 53-year-old angering Magpies fans with his failed managerial appointments and his decision to sell naming rights to the club’s historic stadium. Ashley has frustrated current Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez by failing to back the Spaniard in the transfer market.

Benitez has publicly complained about Newcastle’s spending on several occasions since leading them to promotion from the Championship last season, with Ashley responding that he doesn’t have the cash to compete with superpowers like Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United. Now Ashley, who paid £134 million ($178 million, 150 million euros) for Newcastle, reportedly hopes to find a new owner by the end of the year following the formal announcement of his sale plan.

“As one of the Premier League’s oldest and best supported football clubs – and for the benefit of its many fans and supporters in the UK and across the world – Newcastle United requires a clear direction and a path to a bright and successful future,” a Newcastle statement read.

“To give the club the best possible opportunity of securing the positioning and investment necessary to take it to the next level, at what is an important time in its history, its present ownership has determined that it is in the best interests of Newcastle United and its fans for the club to be put up for sale.”

Speculation over Newcastle’s future was ramped up after the appearance of financier Amanda Staveley at their match against Liverpool earlier this month. After initially trying to win over Newcastle fans by sitting with them at away matches — the Londoner was often pictured in a Newcastle shirt drinking beer with supporters — he spent far less time at the north-east club once the atmosphere soured in recent years.

Ashley unsuccessfully cycled through a host of managers in a bid to transform Newcastle’s fortunes, with Kevin Keegan, Joe Kinnear, Alan Pardew and Steve McClaren among his hires.

Newcastle are currently ninth in the Premier League after Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Southampton, but Ashley looks to have realised more investment is needed and he is willing to let a new buyer defer part of the payments to allow funds to be used on improving Benitez’s squad.

“To give an incoming owner the maximum possible flexibility to make meaningful investment in the club, including in its playing squad, the sale process will give interested parties the opportunity of deferring substantial payments,” the statement added.

“A process will now commence of identifying new ownership for the club that will be capable of delivering the sustained investment in and dedication to the club that is necessary for it to achieve its ambitions.”

I can count on one hand how many updates my Huawei Mate 9 has received since launch. It’s October 2017, and the Mate 9 sitting in my desk drawer is running Android 7.0 Nougat with the April 2017 security patch. I bet most people would agree that this isn’t acceptable, especially with vulnerabilities like BlueBorne floating around.

Apparently that’s not going to be much of an issue any longer. At a briefing in Shenzhen, China, Dr. Chenglu Wang, President of Software Engineering at Huawei, told Android Authority the company is putting a much bigger focus on software updates in the future.

First order of business: updating its legacy phones. The company says Android 8.0 Oreo with EMUI 8 will roll out to the Huawei Mate 9 within four weeks after the Mate 10 launches. The company didn’t give an official estimate on when Oreo will roll out to the P10 series, though we do know it’s coming “in the near future.”

The Mate 9 will get some of the Mate 10‘s fancy new AI features, including Smart Tips that prompt you to change your phone settings when it senses you’re in a certain environment. Unfortunately the Mate 9 won’t get the Mate 10’s new AI camera features due to the fact that the Mate 9 doesn’t feature Huawei’s AI chip, the Kirin 970.

Dr. Wang also says the update to Android Oreo and EMUI 8 brings Google’s Project Treble to new and old Huawei devices, which means security updates will be much more frequent. The company hopes to release security patches every three months to lower-end devices and every month for higher-end phones.

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has asked the Federal Government to produce their leader Nnamdi Kanu in court on October 17, Punch reports.

Kanu had reportedly gone hiding after the Nigerian Military allegedly raided his house.

While his brother Fine Boy, in September, had said only Kanu can disclose his whereabouts.

However, Kanu’s lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, had in the same month asked that the court order the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, to produce his client.

The Nigerian Military and the Federal Government have repeatedly insisted they have no idea as to the whereabouts of the IPOB leader.

In the statement released by IPOB on Tuesday, they asked both foreign organisations and developed nations to demand of the Nigerian Government the whereabouts of Nnamdi Kanu.

IPOB wrote:

The barefaced lies of the Nigerian Defence Minister, General Mansur Dan Ali, and that of the Buhari regime against our leader and organisation is beginning to unravel before the eyes of the world.

By admitting publicly that soldiers were sent to Isiama Afaraukwu to look for our leader without any order or warrant from a court of law confirms the contempt in which the Nigerian government holds the rule of law and their judicial process.

It is therefore incumbent upon civilised nations of the world and organisations alike to ask the APC-led Nigerian government why they decided to send armed soldiers to invade Kanu’s residence.

One outcome is guaranteed in all this, should Nigeria not produce our leader in court on the 17th of October 2017, there will be inevitable confrontation on a scale the human mind cannot imagine, at a time and place of our choosing.
