Senior political figures in Niger Republic have appealed to Nigeria's President, Bola Tinubu to rescind his decision to place sanctions on the West African country.

The leaders consisting of former presidents of the country, former prime ministers and opposition leaders pleaded with President Tinubu to lift the sanctions and use diplomatic and political means to the current impasse in the country.

They argued that the sanctions can not be justified under Nigerien and the international law.

"His Excellency Mr. Bola Ahmed TINUBU,

President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,

Current President of the Conference of Heads of States and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) - ABUJA, Federal Republic of Nigeria

"His Excellency, Mr. President,

"Following the military coup in Niger on July 26, 2023, the Conference of the Heads of States and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in an extraordinary session on the issue in Abuja, Federal Republic of Nigeria, met on July 30th, 2023.

"At the end of its meeting, the Conference of Presidents decided to impose penalties extremely severe and of all orders to our country, to compel the leaders of the coup to restore constitutional order and restore President Mohammad Bazoum back to office.

"Due to their immediacy, scope and effects, these sanctions are unprecedented in the history of our Common Organisation and at the level of our continent. In effect, they are from our point of view, unbearable, ineffective and inappropriate and will have unimaginable catastrophic consequences on Niger and especially on its hard-working population, already hard-hit.

"On a completely different level, these sanctions cannot be justified under our law and even less in light of international law.

"We are even more concerned about the future of our country and its people, in to the extent that these sanctions are accompanied by the threat of military intervention.

"This is why, in the face of this imminent increase in the dangers for our country and for the sub-region, we, the signatories of this letter, ask you to lift the sanctions against the people of Niger and to use diplomatic and political means to find peaceful and constructive solutions to this serious crisis that bedevils our Country.

"Please accept, Your Excellency Mr. President, the expression of our very high consideration.

"This request is signed and counter-signed by the following:

Mahamane Ousmane is Niger's first democratically elected and fourth President who served from 16 April 1993 until he was deposed in a military coup d'état on 27 January 1996.

He leads the opposition Democratic and Republican Renewal Party.

Amadou Salifou is an ex-President of the Nigerien's National Assembly from 2014-2016.

Seyni Oumarou is an ex-Nigerien Prime Minister (2007-2009) and served as President of Niger's National Assembly (2009-2010). He was again elected President of the National Assembly in 2021, a position he holds until the coup.

Mamane Oumarou is a two-time Nigerien Prime Minister, and has been Mediator of the Republic since 2008.

Mahamadou Danda is an former Nigerien Prime Minister (2010-2011).

Ibrahim Assane Mayaki is a former Nigerien Prime Minister (1997-2000).

Cheffou Amadou is a former Nigerien Prime Minister (1991-1993).

Hama Amadou is a former Nigerien Prime Minister (1995-1996) & (2000-2007) and ex-President of the National Assembly (2011-2014).

Brigi Rafini is a former Nigerien PM (2011-2021)

Amadou Boubacar Cisse is a former Nigerien PM (1996-1997).

Ousseini Tinni is a former President of the National Assembly (2016-2021).

Hamid Algabid is a former Nigerien PM (1983-1988).

 

Overthrown Niger Republic President Mohamed Bazoum may be killed if ECOWAS attempts any military intervention to restore his rule.

The Niger’s junta made this known to a top U.S. diplomat who subsequently told The Associated Press.

A Western military official while speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation, said the coupists told the U.S. Secretary of State Victoria Nuland of the threat to kill Bazoum during her visit to the country this week.

The statement was corroborated by a U.S. official who also spoke on condition of anonymity, as he noted that they were not authorized to speak to the media.

President Bazoum, who was overthrown on July 26, has claimed he is being held hostage at his residence.

ECOWAS just recently directed the deployment of a standby military force to restore democracy in Niger after the coup.

Confirming the report the singer's longtime manager Sunday Are stated that Wizkid's mother Mrs Jane Dolapo Balogun, passed away at about 1:30am on Friday 18th August 2023. In addition to Wizkid, the late Mrs. Balogun was also mother to two other children, Yetunde Balogun and Lade Balogun.  A 56 year old Canadian female identified as Pascale Celine Veronique Ferrier has been handed a 22 year prison sentence for sending letters poisoned with ricin to former US president, Donald Trump. The deadly envelope addressed to Mr Trump had been intercepted by the FBI in September 2020 before delivery to the White House. The Bureau found Pascale Ferrier's fingerprints on the letter addressed to Mr Trump, urging him to drop out of the presidential race.

Ferrier who pled guilty to biological weapon charges, told the court that she regretted that her plan had failed and that she "couldn't stop Trump". In a lengthy speech in the courtroom, she also said that she saw herself as an activist and not a terrorist. In her words: "I want to find peaceful means to achieve my goals". Ms Ferrier also confessed to have mailed 8 other poisoned letters to law enforcement officers across America. District Judge Dabney Friedrich sentenced Ms Ferrier to 262 months in prison. She will be deported from the US after serving her sentence and faces supervision for life if she ever returns.

 Nigeria's President, Bola Tinubu has reacted to the judgement of the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) that affirmed his victory at the February 25 polls.

The Tribunal had dismissed the petitions of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), the Labour Party (LP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for lack of competence.

President Tinubu through his spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale in a statement said he "welcomes the judgment of the Tribubal with an intense sense of solemn responsibility and preparedness to serve all Nigerians, irrespective of all diverse political persuasions, faiths, and tribal identities."

"The President recognizes the diligence, undaunted thoroughness, and professionalism of the five-member bench, led by Justice Haruna Tsammani in interpreting the law", the statement reads.

"The President believes the Presidential Candidates and Political Parties that have lawfully exercised their rights by participating in the 2023 general elections and the judicial process, which followed, have affirmed Nigeria’s democratic credentials", he added.
