KanyiDaily recalls that the DSS had been trying to arrest Godwin Emefiele since last year during the administration of the immediate past president, Muhammadu Buhari.

The DSS had filed a suit on December 7, 2022, seeking to arrest the former CBN governor over allegations bothering on “acts of financing terrorism, fraudulent activities and economic crimes of national security dimension.”

But the Chief Judge, Justice John Tsoho of the Federal High Court ruled that the DSS did not provide substantial evidence to support their claims of Emefiele’s involvement in terrorism financing and economic crimes.

Following the end of Buhari’s administration, President Bola Tinubu announced Emefiele’s suspension on Friday, June 9, citing the need for investigation and reforms in the financial sector.

Emefiele was instructed to immediately hand over his responsibilities to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, during the course of the investigation and reforms.

After he was removed as CBN governor on Friday night, Emefiele was arrested in Lagos and subsequently transported to the Federal Capital Territory for questioning.

The DSS initially denied his arrest, but later confirmed in a statement on Saturday by its spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, that Emefiele is now in its custody for “investigative reasons”.

Popular Nollywood actor,Sylvester Madu has responded to his critic over his being broke and selling second-hand clothes at an Enugu market.

In a video which trended on Nigerian social media space, the popular actor was filmed selling Okrika at an Enugu market. In the video which became viral, Madu who wore a brown jacket, discussed with suspected customers who surrounded his wares.

The video elicited varying reactions from Nigerians who were shocked to see a household name actor hawking used clothes at a local market as the one he was seen.

However, responding to his critic, Madu disclosed that he is proud of his business dealing which he referred to as : "my business empire"

He further criticized some unemployed Nigerian youths who expressed shock at his selling used clothes at markets. According to him, his business dealing is "legit business,” which is far better than begging for N2000 on social media.

“Do your business legit, no send anybody. Someone saying that this is really encouraging. If someone like me can run my business then why would he be sitting at home and doing nothing? Because there are a lot of Nigerian youths at home doing nothing,” he said in pidgin English.

“Some of them will just come on social media and boys I need urgent 2k. Go outside and work. If you no get work I will employ you. I have boys selling for me at different spots.

“People dey just dey say legit business like something to be ashamed of. What’s the difference between me and the person selling in the market? Because I’m popular? Because I’m an actor or celebrity? So? Make I no run business. Do you know how much people have sent to me and more are still coming? Saying ‘support your business’. No be sey I dey hungry.”

The acting Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has on Monday promised the withdrawal of policemen from carrying out guard and escort duties.

He made this statement during a meeting with Squadron leaders and Tactical Commanders in the F.C.T as he announced the establishment of the Special Intervention Squad which according to him would amount to about 40,000 highly trained police officers including selected officers withdrawn from their VIP escort/guard duties. This, according was to bring the police back to its place in the “internal security architecture” of the country.

 Egbetokun said, “In a bid to kick-start the process of regaining our pride of place in the internal security architecture of our dear country first and foremost, modalities for the creation of a new special squad – the Special Intervention Squad have been initiated.

“This special squad shall consist of 40,000 specially trained elite officers. The Squad will be formed by selecting officers from the pool of existing Police Mobile Force personnel and all tactical units in the country.

“These officers will undergo an intensive pre-deployment training to make them combat-ready for frontline operational duties in all the states of the Federation, with a particular focus on areas plagued with unrest and turmoil.

“By pooling together the expertise and experience of our PMF personnel and other tactical units, we can establish a formidable force that is well-equipped to handle the evolving challenges we face.”

He added that the squad was established with the aim of helping the police respond to security threats swiftly and that to each state would be deployed about 1000 personnel.

He said, “This dedicated force will bolster our capacity to respond swiftly and decisively to security threats, ensuring that our presence is felt and our response is effective in every corner of our country. 1000 personnel from this new squad will be deployed to every state of the Federation for immediate operations as standby intervention units, while more troubled spots or zones will receive the remaining officers out of the 40,000.

“These officers will not perform routine police duties but will be housed and kept combat-ready at all times engaging in daily training readiness for deployments to intercept and neutralize high-profile criminals and those terrorizing our communities. ”

The acting IG also expressed confidence in the ability of the new special squad to combat  kidnapping, insurgency and other security threats the country is faced with.

Egbetokun said that all the withdrawn officers acting as escorts/guards for VIPs will be replaced by officers from the Special Protection Unit.

He said, “We shall effect the withdrawal of PMF personnel from VIP escort/guard duties. While the protection of dignitaries remains paramount, it is imperative that we realign our priorities to address the escalating security challenges faced by the nation as a whole. By relieving the PMF of VIP escort and guard duties, we can redirect their focus and efforts toward addressing critical security concerns that affect our communities at large.

“To support the foregoing strategic plan and make needed manpower available for frontline duties, the withdrawn PMF officers will be replaced by officers of the Special Protection Unit only where necessary.”

Egbetokun said the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Operations) has been appointed to head a special committee to give counsel on how the strategy could be easily implemented. The committee is expected to submit its report in two weeks.

"I was a victim of Davido too, I was once pregnant for Davido, He told me to abort it and promised to give me N10Million, I agreed and aborted the Baby but Davido never fulfilled his promises, he didn't Give me my N10Million," she said in part.

Chisom also shared a photo of Davido in her bed, a video of herself while at backstage with the singer, and an alleged chat they had where he promised to pay her for aborting the baby.

 789 new cases of diphtheria has been discovered in Nigeria as of June 30.

This is according to an announcement by the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The NCDC further announced that the cases were recorded in 33 LGAs across eight states; Kano, Lagos, Yobe, Katsina, Cross River, Kaduna, Osun and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

According to NCDC, majority of the cases were recorded in Kano, with 71.7 percent of the confirmed cases occurring among children aged two to 14 years.

Among all confirmed cases, 80 deaths were recorded, with 82 percent of the 798 confirmed diphtheria cases unvaccinated.

The NCDC noted that this would be the first time in over two decades, that the country would be procuring diphtheria antitoxin (DAT) in-country, while distributung it to the affected states, adding that it has established a multi-sectoral national diphtheria technical working group as a mechanism for coordinating surveillance and response activities across the country.

The statement added; 

“Individuals with signs and symptoms suggestive of diphtheria should isolate themselves and notify their LGA, State disease surveillance officer (DSNO), their State Ministry of Health helpline, or the NCDC through our toll-free line on 6232.

“Individuals who have come in close contact with a confirmed case of diphtheria should be closely monitored, given antibiotics prophylaxis, and started on diphtheria treatment when indicated.”

Diphtheria, a bacterial infection that affect the nose, throat, and sometimes, skin of an individual, has notable symptoms that included fever, runny nose, sore throat, cough, red eyes, neck swelling, and difficulty in breathing.

 Suspended CP, Abba Kyari has regained a temporal freedom as a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has granted him a N50m bail.

  Kyari was charged alongside his two siblings by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency NDLEA for failing to declare assets to it, with the agency subsequently filing a 24-count charge against Kyari and his brothers, Mohammed Baba Kyari and Ali Kyari.

Kyari is also being charged for cocaine trafficking, having being earlier denied bail over this.

Abba Kyari's lawyer, Hamza N. Dantani, while sharing the news of the court granting Kyari bail on Thursday, July 6, wrote on his Facebook page:

 ”Alhamudullhi! Abba Kyari’s Bail Granted by Federal High Court Abuja today.”

Justice James Omotosho while granting Kyari the conditional bail, added that his sureties must have property worth N25m within the court's jurisdiction, among other conditions.

It would be recalled that Kyari was in February 14, 2022 arrested and detained after being declared wanted by NDLEA over alleged drug links.

He was accused of using $61,400 in cash and 25kg parcel of cocaine seized as evidence he allegedly used as bribe to influence operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The NDLEA had accused Kyari of attempting to bribe a senior agency officer with $61,400 at a restaurant in Abuja to prevent testing a portion of the seized cocaine connected to two individuals arrested for drug trafficking.

 A Private Security Contractor engaged by NNPC Ltd., Messrs. Tantita Security Services, has intercepted a suspicious Vessel with a Cargo of Crude oil on board on July 7, 2023.

 NNPC spokesman, Garba Deen Muhammad, in a statement said the Vessel, MT TURA II (IMO number: 6620462), owned by a Nigerian Registered Company, HOLAB MARITIME SERVICES LIMITED with Registration Number RC813311, was heading to Cameroun with the Cargo on board when it was apprehended at an offshore location (Latitude: 5.8197194477543235°, Longitude: 4.789002723991871°), with the Captain and Crew members on board.

‘’Preliminary investigations revealed that the crude oil cargo onboard was illegally sourced from a well jacket offshore Ondo State, Nigeria. There was no valid documentation for the Vessel or the Crude Oil Cargo onboard at the time of the arrest. Further investigation into the activities of the vessel at the NNPC Ltd. Command and Control Centre also revealed that the Vessel has been operating in stealth mode for the last twelve (12) years. The last reported location of the Vessel was Tin Can Port in July 2011.

"Details of this arrest and the outcomes of the investigations were escalated to the appropriate Government authorities, upon which it was concluded to destroy the Vessel to serve as a strong warning and deterrent to all those participating in such illegal activities to cease and desist.

"Destroying vessels involved in transporting stolen crude oil is of paramount importance as a strong deterrent. The illegal trade of stolen crude oil not only inflicts significant economic losses on Nigeria and legitimate stakeholders in the oil industry, but also perpetuates a cycle of corruption, environmental devastation, and social instability.

"NNPC Ltd. assures Nigerians that we will sustain the momentum in the war against crude oil theft until it is brought to a halt,'' the statement read.

 Tragedy struck in Ogbogbo in the Ijebu-North East area of Ogun State as six persons were said to have died after taking alcohol served by their friend.

It was gathered that the incident occurred on Tuesday, at a bar joint where seven friends gathered together to drink.

A source told PUNCH that all the six persons who drank the alcohol died except the person who offered them the alcohol as he did not drink it but took it home.

The friend who served the alcohol and the deceased persons were said to have engaged in a hot argument, but, was later settled.

The source who spoke to PUNCH said the server of the alcohol had offered to donate a bottle of alcohol as part of reconciliation moves after the argument.

He was said to have gone home and brought the drink which was drunk by all the six friends except him.

The source further noted that after some hours after the friends had departed to their various destinations, two of the friends died with four others hospitalised.

The other four persons were said to have died the following day while the man who offered them the alcohol was reported to have fled over the incident.

In the words of the source:

“It was later at that night that the news started breaking that those who drank from the alcohol have started dying while some of them were rushed to the hospital.

“Six people have been announced dead as of the time of speaking to you. The whereabouts of the man who brought the alcohol is yet to be known.”

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola while confirming the incident.

Odutola, refused to disclose the number of affected persons.

In her words:

 “I just confirmed something like that occurred but the families said they are not pressing charges and prefer to bury their dead.”

Former national chairman of the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC) and Senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole has said that the party may no assurances of a 24-hour solution to many lingering issues of the country during the campaigns.

Speaking to an interviewer on Channels Television, the former Edo State governor said the All Progressive Congress (APC) did not at any point in time promise a “magical solution” to the problems that have plagued Nigeria.

“They know they were not electing a magician and nobody promised a magical solution,I know what we (APC) promised more than you who was reporting it. You don’t need to give me an example. Whatever you reported, we were the source.We did not promise a 24-hour solution. We did not promise miracles. We did not promise an overnight solution. Show me any document that says in 48 hours, this should be done. In 14 days or 21 days, this should be done.” The former NLC chairman said.

Oshiomhole also opined that looking at how the cost of living has tremendously increased and considering the exchange rate at the moment, maintaining this current minimum wage would be criminal.

Since President Bola Tinubu announced the end of the petrol subsidy regime on the day he was inaugurated to lead the country, price of the petroleum products have skyrocketed nationwide, thereby leading to hike in transport fares and inflated food prices.

Recall that the Workers’ Alliance for Inclusive Socio-economic Reforms (WAISER) had appealed to the government to introduce a new minimum wage to the tune of N200,000 monthly in order to help alleviate the economic hardship being experienced by many citizens.

“In my view, what we call minimum wage is a criminal wage, If you exchange N30,000 at N800 or N700 to the dollar, what does that translate to? “So, the value of that minimum wage when it was N125 – when it was first introduced under, I think, (Shehu) Shagari’s government – is about two or three times the value many years later, even in the public service.I can tell you that I have decided to pay for my cleaner. My cleaner is just a primary school…I’m not sure she even has a school leaving certificate. But she’s knowledgeable enough to clean the house” Oshiomole said

“I found myself unable to pay her less than N60,000 – in fact, N60,000. It’s about my conscience. I’m trying to imagine what she has to pay for a house. If I have chosen to employ a cleaner and chosen not to clean the house by myself that is the least I thought I could pay her.”

Meanwhile Governor Hope Uzodinma has approved that the minimum wage of workers in Imo State be increased to N40,000 to cushion the economic effects that have arisen due the removal of fuel subsidy.

Renowned music video director TG Omori recently shared a fascinating story about an encounter he had with a man who rejected his N1000 gift.

In an old video that TG Omori posted on his Twitter page, he detailed how he went to see his father and was surprised to see boys on the street come to pay homage to him.

He stated that he had only encountered young boys on the street on rare occasions since visiting his father, which is why he didn’t have enough cash on him, He had spent all of his money on security.

Unfortunately for him, he came across these boys in the street who begged him for money.

Due to not having enough cash on him at the time, he offered them N1000 that he had gotten from his driver.

One of the boys was so disappointed when the director only gave them N1,000 that he couldn’t hide his disappointment.

When Omori offered him money, the man pointed out the amount, probably to remind him that it was very small.

The music director was visibly angry as he shut the door of his car and drove off.

The enigma surrounding the N2 million cash present musician D’banj gave an elderly woman has been clarified by well-known Lagos clergyman, Genesis.

In a heartwarming act of generosity, Nigerian music icon D’banj recently surprised a woman with a staggering N2 million cash gift.

The singer made headlines last week after giving a market woman 2 million naira in response to her description of what she would do if she won the $1 prize.

Kasnaty, an elderly guy, had gone to a market in the southwest to get market women’s opinions about what they would do with a $1 lottery prize if they were fortunate enough to win one.

The replies given by the women who were unaware of the dollar’s equivalent in naira were ludicrous.

One woman in particular said she planned to utilize the $1 to finish her building, take care of her kids, and expand her business.

D’banj was intrigued by the woman’s reaction and expressed an interest in getting in touch with her.

In keeping to his word, the musician gave the woman N2 million in his home after she was located.

Analyzing the video, the preacher highlights the wonderful deed He observed that when the woman requested one, she received two.

He said:

“Let me tell you the mystery of $1. One person went to the market and met one woman among many women. The person asked that woman what she would do with $1 and she said what she would do with it. Through that, she met D’banj and gave her one million for her business and another one million to take care of her kids. Because she mentioned one, he gave her double for her trouble”.
