Coronavirus dies in SUNLIGHT in just minutes, reveals ‘striking’ study by US Department of Homeland Security – and officials say transmission of the killer virus WILL decrease in summer by AngelPrisi(f) : 9:08 pm On Apr 24

The new coronavirus is quickly destroyed by sunlight, according to new research announced by a senior US official last night, though the study has not yet been made public and awaits external evaluation.

William Bryan, science and technology advisor to the Department of Homeland Security secretary, told reporters at the White House that government scientists had found ultraviolet rays had a potent impact on the pathogen, offering hope that its spread may ease over the summer.

‘Our most striking observation to date is the powerful effect that solar light appears to have on killing the virus, both surfaces and in the air,’ he said.

‘We’ve seen a similar effect with both temperature and humidity as well, where increasing the temperature and humidity or both is generally less favorable to the virus.’

The radiation given off by ultraviolet light damages the virus’s genetic material and their ability to replicate.

But the paper itself has not yet been released for review, making it difficult for independent experts to comment on how robust its methodology was.

It has long been known that ultraviolet light has a sterilizing effect, because the radiation damages the virus’s genes.

A key question, however, will be what the intensity and wavelength of the UV light used in the experiment was and whether this accurately mimics natural light conditions in summer.

‘It would be good to know how the test was done, and how the results were measured,’ Benjamin Neuman, chair of biological sciences at Texas A&M University-Texarkana, told AFP.

‘Not that it would be done badly, just that there are several different ways to count viruses, depending on what aspect you are interested in studying.’

Bryan shared a slide summarizing major findings of the experiment that was carried out at the National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center in Maryland.

Mr Bryan confirmed scientists had found ultraviolet rays had a potent impact on the pathogen, offering hope that its spread may ease over the summer.

It showed that the virus’s half-life – the time taken for it to reduce to half its amount – was 18 hours when the temperature was 70 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit (21 to 24 degrees Celsius) with 20 percent humidity on a non-porous surface.

This includes things like door handles and stainless steel.

But the half-life dropped to six hours when humidity rose to 80 percent – and to just two minutes when sunlight was added to the equation.

When the virus was aerosolized – meaning suspended in the air – the half-life was one hour when the temperature was 70 to 75 degrees with 20 percent humidity.

In the presence of sunlight, this dropped to just one and a half minutes.

Bryan concluded that summer-like conditions ‘will create an environment (where) transmission can be decreased.’

He added, though, that reduced spread did not mean the pathogen would be eliminated entirely and social distancing guidelines cannot be fully lifted.

‘It would be irresponsible for us to say that we feel that the summer is just going to totally kill the virus and then if it’s a free-for-all and that people ignore those guides,’ he said.

Previous work has also agreed that the virus fares better in cold and dry weather than it does in hot and humid conditions, and the lower rate of spread in southern hemisphere countries where it is early fall and still warm bear this out.

Australia, for example, has had just under 7,000 confirmed cases and 77 deaths – well below many northern hemisphere nations.

The reasons are thought to include that respiratory droplets remain airborne for longer in colder weather, and that viruses degrade more quickly on hotter surfaces, because a protective layer of fat that envelops them dries out faster.

US health authorities believe that even if COVID-19 cases slow over summer, the rate of infection is likely to increase again in fall and winter, in line with other seasonal viruses like the flu.

COVID-19: IMF Approves Buhari’s $3.4 Billion Emergency Loan Request by AngelPrisi(f) : 5:30 pm On Apr 29

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Tuesday approved a $3.4 billion emergency funding requested by Nigeria, to help cushion the impact of COVID-19 on her economy.

The executive board of the fund gave the approval under the Rapid Financing Instrument to support the government’s efforts to address the devastating impact of COVID-19.

It is the single largest aid for any African country facing the pandemic. The Fund had earlier approved $1 billion for Ghana, Igbere TV reports.

On April 6, the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, said at the launching of the N500 billion fiscal stimulus measures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic that the IMF request was part of a number options the country was exploring raise funds to salvage its economy.

The minister said the other options to mobilise financial support to the country’s economic stimulus fund included a $2.5 billion credit facility from the World Bank, and another $1 billion from the African Development Bank.

At the meeting of its executive board on Tuesday to consider Nigeria’s request, the IMF noted that the COVID-19 outbreak has magnified existing economic vulnerabilities, leading to a historic contraction in the economic growth of most countries, and to large extent their external and fiscal financing needs.

“Once the impact of the COVID-19 shock passes, the authorities’ commitment to medium-term macroeconomic stability remains crucial to support the recovery and ensure debt remains sustainable,” the board said.

The board said the approval of 100 per cent of Nigeria’s contribution to the Fund as emergency financial assistance was based on the country’s Special Drawing Rights under the Rapid Financing Instrument.

IMF approves $3.4 billion emergency support for Nigeria by AngelPrisi(f) : 6:30 pm On Apr 29

The International Monetary Fund IMF has approved the US$3.4 billion requested by the Federal government to help address the severe economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the sharp fall in oil prices.

IMF approves $3.4 billion emergency support for Nigeria

IMF approves $3.4 billion emergency support for Nigeria

The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) approved the financial request today April 28.

The IMF in a statement released, said the financial support will ”help limit the decline in international reserves and provide financing to the budget for targeted and temporary spending increases aimed at containing and mitigating the economic impact of the pandemic and of the sharp fall in international oil prices.”

“The COVID-19 outbreak—magnified by the sharp fall in international oil prices and reduced global demand for oil products—is severely impacting economic activity in Nigeria. These shocks have created large external and financing needs for 2020. Additional declines in oil prices and more protracted containment measures would seriously affect the real and financial sectors and strain the country’s financing.

“The authorities’ immediate actions to respond to the crisis are welcome. The short-term focus on fiscal accommodation would allow for higher health spending and help alleviate the impact of the crisis on households and businesses. Steps taken toward a more unified and flexible exchange rate are also important and unification of the exchange rate should be expedited.

“Once the COVID-19 crisis passes, the focus should remain on medium-term macroeconomic stability, with revenue-based fiscal consolidation essential to keep Nigeria’s debt sustainable and create fiscal space for priority spending. Implementation of the reform priorities under the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan, particularly on power and governance, remains crucial to boost growth over the medium term.

“The emergency financing under the RFI will provide much needed liquidity support to respond to the urgent BOP needs. Additional assistance from development partners will be required to support the government’s efforts and close the large financing gap. The implementation of proper governance arrangements—including through the publication and independent audit of crisis-mitigating spending and procurement processes—is crucial to ensure emergency funds are used for their intended purposes.”

“Look at my neck,” he said, pointing to the strings of beaded necklace he was wearing.

“The assignment I’m going on now is not something… What I’m going for is a very serious matter. I’m telling you the truth.”

“But why are you not wearing your face mask,” an officer asked.

Kaduna State has recorded its first casualty to the coronavirus pandemic, the government said on Saturday.

Commissioner for Health, Dr Amina Mohammed-Bolani, said the state also recorded three active cases of the virus.

The commissioner said the first fatality was among the additional three COVID-19 cases confirmed in the state.

According to her, the state now has 28 confirmed cases and awaits results of 350 samples, mostly almajiris, which it sent to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) for tests.

“Testing of 167 almajiris who returned from Kano has now been completed, and the number of positive cases from this group may rise. Cases in the state rose to 28 on Thursday.

“The three patients that increased the number from 25 include two males and the first female COVID-19 case in the state,” the official said.

She added that the female patient was a health worker not involved in the treatment of COVID-19 cases.

“One of the two males was a retired civil servant with underlying medical conditions, who concealed his recent travel to Kano when he visited a public hospital and a private hospital.

“He was eventually admitted at the isolation centre with respiratory distress.

“He died before his positive test result was released. He is the first COVID-19 fatality in Kaduna State,” she said.

The official said that the family of the deceased had been informed of his demise, and he had been buried according to the NCDC’s burial protocol.

President raises alarm as pawpaw and goat reportedly test positive to Covid-19 in Tanzania by AngelPrisi(f) : 8:01 am On May 04

The President of Tanzania, John Pombe Magufuli has raised alarm by questioning the quality of imported test kits being used in the country, and has ordered that they should be checked and probed after goat and pawpaw fruit reportedly tested positive for Covid-19 in the country.

John Magufuli made this known while speaking at an event recently held at Chato, in the Northwest of Tanzania.

In his speech, he revealed that the imported covid-19 testing kits have “technical errors”.

According to him, he had instructed that non-human samples be randomly obtained from a pawpaw fruit, a sheep and a goat which were labeled fake human names and bio-data without the knowledge of the lab technicians.

Surprisingly, the President said he was amazed that the tests for the pawpaw fruit and goat came out positive.

Speaking further at the event, he revealed he has since ordered the Tanzanian health agency to subject the quality of the kits to clinical lab tests to help ascertain their effectiveness and reliability.

According to LIB, the president was quoted to have said;

“We extracted a sample from a goat which turned positive. This tells you that something is not adding up.

Are we now supposed to quarantine goats and fruits?” the President questioned.
