Reigning champions, Anthony Joshua sadly attempted to fight for Nigeria about 10 years ago but failed to make the final team due to some unclear issues.

Former Olympian, Obisia Nwankpa has described Nigerian-born English boxer, Anthony Oluwafemi Joshua’s victory over Wladimir Klitschko in Saturday’s epic battle at Wembley Stadium, London as ‘excellent.’

But Nwankpa is unhappy with the series of attacks by some Nigerians who alleged that he (Obisia) frustrated the boxer from representing Nigeria at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

In what has gone down as an unforgettable night at Wembley Stadium, Joshua retained his IBF world title and added the WBC ‘super’ belt by stopping Klitschko in the 11th round of their heavyweight contest.

Since the victory on Saturday night, many Nigerian boxing fans have resorted to trading blames, pointing accusing fingers at coach Obisia Nwankpa and Samson Aransiola for frustrating Joshua from being one of Team Nigeria’s boxers to Beijing 2008 Olympics.

Speaking with The Guardian yesterday, Nwankpa said: “I was surprised some Nigerians are making such accusation against me. What happened was that Joshua actually contacted us that he wanted to represent Nigeria at Beijing Olympics Games. We agreed that he should come down to Nigeria to join other boxers in our camp so that we could examine him properly. But he refused. And as at that time, we had three good boxers in the heavyweight category, who were doing very well. I doubt if Joshua could have won a medal for Nigeria at that time. So, it is wrong for anyone to say that we frustrated Joshua from representing Nigeria,” Nwankpa stated.

After his failure to make Team Nigeria’s squad to Beijing 2008 Olympics, Joshua was denied another opportunity of representing the country at the London 2012 Olympics.

“I don’t really know what transpired in 2012 because I was not the coach in charge of Team Nigeria’s boxers. But as I pointed out, if Joshua had listened to my advice, perhaps, he would have made the team to Beijing 2008.

“But I want Nigerians to learn some lessons from this. Today, everyone is celebrating Anthony Joshua because he has become a world champion. Nigerians should stop this attitude. We don’t like investing on our children or giving them the support they need to become a successful person in the future. It is not so in other countries,” he stated.

The wife of former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, has raised an alarm over what she said would be the consequences of their son’s forthcoming wedding to the daughter of the owner of Premier Lotto, Kessington Adebutu.

Taiwo Obasanjo, in a letter to The Methodist Church of Nigeria, said the dates chosen for the wedding of Abraham Obasanjo to Tope Adebutu – May 11 and 13 – would precipitate untold misery for the country.

“The two dates were chosen and compelled by Satan for them to lure unsuspecting numerous souls to a banquet of death, that will result in strange holocaust in our nation,” Mrs. Obasanjo said.

“After the wedding, you will be hearing and seeing incidents of plane crashes, fire incidents, multiple road accidents, tankers and trailer killing people, cancers, diseases of kidney, liver, prostrate, eyes issues and diverse health problem causing strange death in people and the economy situation will worsen.”

In her latest letter, addressed to the head of the Methodist Church in Nigeria, Mrs. Obasanjo said repeated pleas to her prospective sister, daughter, and father-in-law; her husband; and her brother, Kenny Martins to shift the wedding date fell on deaf ears.

“I am not against the wedding, all I am relentlessly pleading is for a shift in the date and they turned against me, even on the 11th and 13th of May they are planning to assassinate me or keep me in police custody from 10th – 14th May 2017, when they would have completed the devilish wedding ceremony.

“Sir, is this a wedding ceremony or a clever, premeditated, devilishly calculated scheme to sacrifice thousands of souls as they come to the feast of death, ostensibly announced as wedding ceremony?

“I am alive and healthy and I am not mad, God used me to convince my son to change his mind to marry this lady called Tope Adebutu, now they want to kill me by all means possible.”

Mrs. Obasanjo also said she would stage a peaceful, public protest on the days of the wedding, and had already informed the police.

“This protest is to bring out people to praise the Almighty God very loud with songs and drummers to sing and dance like King David, as they hold the demonic ceremony. We will not insult or abuse anyone.

“Please, I want the whole world to know that I am not mad and I am not against my son’s wedding but the whole truth will be revealed by the Almighty God who sees in secret all that is hidden, for the power of the Almighty God is supreme.
“Reminder will be sent out to let people know that as many as are free, can join me in praising the Almighty God publicly when then wedding day draws near.”

Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, has raised the alarm over the alleged plan by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to raid his home in Enugu State and plant incriminating items in it.

He further alleged that the proposed raid was to ensure his arrest, detention and indictment, with the aim of frustrating his political ambitions.

The Deputy Senate President alleged that mission to move against him was being sponsored by a cabal in the Presidency.

Ekweremadu, who raised a point of order at the plenary on Wednesday, said he was informed of the alleged plan by a ‘whistle-blower’ close to the EFCC.

The Deputy Senate President read a two-page letter purportedly written by an insider, which was poorly written and titled ‘Please Treat This With Utmost Secrecy by Protecting the Identity of the Source.’

It read, “To the Deputy Senate President: I am a trained investigative journalist working under the EFCC ‘covert intelligence spy police.’

“Distinguished senator, there is a grand plan from the cabal in the Presidency, using EFCC as an anti-graft agency, to indict and remove you from office. This cabal in the Presidency has mandated the EFCC chairman to carry out this evil operation within two weeks.

“The plan and the trap goes like this: On the 6th of May 2017 – Saturday night stroke Sunday morning – the EFCC, alongside local and international media, both print and TV and radio, will raid an apartment under the guise of whistleblowing policy of the Federal Government with a search warrant already obtained in the magistrate’s court to search an apartment alleging to be one of your guest houses in Enugu State capital or any suitable available apartment in your senatorial district that will serve this evil purpose.

“EFCC (will be) claiming to have received a tip-off from a whistle-blower in your state alerting the agency of a ‘large huge’ amount of money of different currencies in the said apartment belonging to you, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, the Deputy Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, a proceed of which is likely to be (considered as) illegally obtained and acquired, which constitute abuse of office and corruption.”

The ‘informant’ also listed the exhibits to be recovered from the planned operation.

The letter further read, “The things to be discovered in said apartment are a huge amount of money with different currencies such as British Pound Sterling, United States dollars, Indian rupee, South Africa rand and Malaysian Ringgit; documents alleging to be yours such as 2015 campaign memo and logistics, a list of names chairman local wards of party men and women that benefited from your empowerment program; and other cooked documents bearing your signature.

“A single ‘photo portrait’ of yours that will be placed in the sitting room well; ammunitions such as AK 47, two pump action guns with unused bullets.

“You will be invited by the anti-graft agency for questioning and interrogation to shed more light of the said apartment, which will lead to your arrest and detention pending the outcome of the investigation.

“While you are still in detention, well-sponsored non-governmental organisations will be protesting round the nation – Lagos, Enugu, Anambra, FCT Abuja. Sponsored youths in your senatorial district will come to Abuja, protesting at the National Assembly gate with petitions, submitting one to the Senate President and one to the Clerk of the National Assembly recalling you.

“While the protest is ongoing according to their evil plan, the EFCC, after detaining you for at least three weeks, you will be charged to court since Section 308 immunity clause does not apply to your office.

“The cabal in the Presidency, their target is this: to indicted you and to kill your political ambition so that you can no longer stand for any future elections; and to show to the international community and Nigerian people that you, Senator lke Ekweremadu, is a corrupt politician.

“I sympathise with you and God will continue to use people like us to destabilise their evil plan against you. I wish you all the best in your political journey.”

President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, who presided over the plenary, said, “Your point is well noted,” after Ekweremaru’s presentation.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has made some announcements that will be useful for candidates of the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculations Examinations (UTME).

This comes hours after the results for the JAMB mock examination was released.

We gathered some of the important information released by JAMB.

1. Candidates who made mistakes while filling their forms in the ongoing registration can now make corrections for the following categories

-Correction of Name

-Passport Photograph

-UTME subject combination

-Choices of institution/courses and date of birth

2. Candidates will have to pay the sum of N2,500 to effect any of these corrections.

3. Only approved CBT centres are allowed to make these changes.

4. Payment can be done via Remita before proceeding to the Centres.

5. Login to your profile, on the dashboard, click on UTME Registration Data Correction to make payment

6. The 2017 UTME registration ends midnight on Friday, May 5. There will be no extension.

7. Exam dates remain unchanged. The exam will be holding from May 13th to 20th.

8. Candidates will be notified when their exam dates and centres are available.

The mock exam was conducted on Tuesday, May 2, in all the accredited CBT centres nationwide.

Its aim was to prepare candidates for the real exams coming up soon.

This year’s JAMB registration has been fraught with problems. According to NOIPolls, 60 percent of the 2017 JAMB registration applicants experienced one form of difficulty or another during the ongoing registration exercise.

These problems were said to have arisen from the fact that JAMB introduced new measures to ensure ease in the registration process.
