U.S. President Donald Trump arrived at the Vatican on Wednesday for talks with one of his most high-profile critics, Pope Francis, after the two men exchanged sharp words during the presidential campaign last year.

Under clear blue skies, Trump received a tribute from the Swiss Guard in a Vatican courtyard where he was greeted by Archbishop Georg Ganswein, the prefect of the pontifical household.

Trump looked uncomfortable as he entered a small elevator taking him to the third floor of the Apostolic Palace, where he was accompanied by Ganswein and other officials along a frescoed corridor to the pope’s private study.

Following behind Trump were daughter Ivanka, her husband, Jared Kushner, a top White House aide, national security adviser H.R. McMaster and adviser Hope Hicks.

The pope did not smile as he greeted Trump outside the study.

Trump, seeming subdued, said “it is a great honour.”

The two men then posed for photographs and the pope kept a stern face while Trump beamed for the cameras.

The meeting began at precisely 8:33 a.m.

Trump’s meeting with Pope Francis, his third stop on a nine-day foreign tour due to end on Saturday, is part of his world tour of religions after meeting leaders of Muslim nations in Saudi Arabia and visiting holy sites in Jerusalem.

While his talks in Saudi Arabia and Israel were mostly friendly, the meeting between the head of the Roman Catholic Church and the thrice-married, blunt-spoken Trump could be a little more confrontational.

The pope in 2016 said a man who thinks about building walls and not bridges is “not Christian,” a sharp reprimand for Trump’s vow to build a wall along the U.S. border with Mexico.

Trump said it was “disgraceful” of the Argentine-born pope, who represents just over half of the world’s two billion Christians, to question his faith.

“If and when the Vatican is attacked by ISIS, which as everyone knows is ISIS’ ultimate trophy, I can promise you that the pope would have only wished and prayed that Donald Trump would have been president,” Trump said during the campaign.

Trump’s softer stance on environmental regulations also is at odds with Francis’ view that climate change is caused mostly by human activity.

The Vatican also took a dim view of Trump’s anti-Muslim campaign rhetoric, although Trump softened his tone considerably in a major speech in Riyadh.

Francis said last week he would be “sincere” with Trump but did not want to judge him before listening to him in person.

Part of Trump’s motivation for meeting the pope was to dramatise how the three major religions should rally against the threat from Islamist militants.

“We thought that this trip was essential to put together the Muslim faith, the Jewish faith and then the Catholic faith, the Christian faith,” said a senior White House official who briefed reporters on Trump’s Air Force One flight to Rome.

“By putting everybody together you can really build a coalition and show that it’s not a Muslim problem, it’s not a Jewish problem, it’s not a Catholic problem, it’s not a Christian problem, it really is a world problem,” the official said.

Trump at first did not plan to stop in Rome during his visit to Europe, which some in the Vatican saw as a snub.

When he changed his mind, the Vatican squeezed him in at 8:30 a.m. on a Wednesday morning, an unusual day and an unusually early time.

Francis holds his weekly audience with the general public on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St Peter’s Square.

After the meeting, Trump moves on to Brussels for a NATO summit, followed by the last stop on his trip, to a Group of Seven summit in Sicily.

A United States-based cab driver, Mr. Kazeem Adebayo Omoniyi, has narrated how a suspected fraudster, Mr. Abiodun David, posing as a herbalist, duped him of N4 million. Omoniyi said he fell for David’s ruse after the suspect mentioned things were not working out well for him and he had been expecting something which was yet to materialise. The victim noted that the fraud was perpetrated when he came to Nigeria for a brief visit.
Omoniyi had earlier sold a land to a GSM service provider company, but the company was yet to make payment. When David mentioned that Omoniyi had been hoping to get something that seemed impossible, his mind raced to the unfinished business with the network provider company. David told him that if he wanted that pending problem to be sorted out, he would help him with a charm for “favour and progress”. The police recovered a live tortoise from David.

Narrating his experience via phone, Omoniyi said that when he told David that his charms were not working and that he wasn’t going to pay any more money, the man started threatening him. “He first told me to get different naira denominations and give to a beggar.

He said I should give the money to a beggar that would approach for alms. It was difficult to get any beggar to come to me. I had to hire motorcycle to take to different places before I got to where I stood and a beggar walked up to me. So far, he has collected N4 million from me,” Omoniyi said.

David, however, insisted that Omoniyi was lying. According to him, the total money he collected from the victim was just N380,000. The Zone 2 Police Public Relations Officer (ZPPRO), SP Dolapo Badmos, said police embarked on investigation after receiving complaint from the victim. She said: “According to his story, the scam started when he came to Nigeria.

He received a text message from an unknown phone number; the message was numbers of a recharge card. He was wondering who sent it, when his phone rang. It was the herbalist.”

Desperate doctors in Brazil have resorted to using fish skin to treat severe burns victims. The unusual method came about amid a shortage of frozen pig skin and human tissue in public hospitals in the south American country.
Both are normally placed on burns to keep them moist and allow the transfer of collagen, a protein that promotes healing.

Scientists found tilapia fish – commonly found in Brazil’s rivers and fish farms – have the moisture, collagen and disease resistance at levels comparable to human skin and can aid healing.

Before the breakthrough Brazilian hospitals were using gauze bandage which needs regular changing – often painfully.

The tilapia treatment can speed up healing by several days and reduces the need for pain medication, the Brazilian researchers said.

This is the first picture of the parents of a seven-month-old baby who died after allegedly being left in a car on the hottest day of the year.

According to The Sun UK, the child, named locally as Chloe Fogarty, was found in an “unresponsive” state after reportedly being left in a vehicle yesterday for more than five hours in the Irish village of Dundrum, Co Tipperary.

The tiny victim was airlifted to University Hospital Limerick in a critical condition but died a short time later.

Her “popular” young parents Paul and Louise, who are from the nearby village of Golden, are said to be “crippled with grief”.

Irish police the Gardai are investigating but are thought to be treating it as an tragic accident, although a spokesman would not confirm this to The Sun.

A reporter from the Irish Independent told the BBC it is possible the baby may have died from sunstroke.

While the exact nature of what happened to tragic Chloe has not yet been revealed, it is thought she was in the back of her father’s car as he drove her to a creche before work.

According to RTE, Paul is thought to have received a phone call and got distracted, unaware he had left Chloe in the car.

He then went to work in nearby Dundrum.

It is claimed that around 1.45pm the foreman remembered about Chloe and raced back to the car where he found her unresponsive.

Local Fine Gael councillor Micheal Fitzgerald told the Irish Mirror that the family were planning the next chapter of their lives.

He said: “I was talking to Paul yesterday morning. He was planning to build a new house in the parish.

“They were making plans for the future, but within a few hours, everything changed for them.”

He added: “This is an awful case of human error. It was the hottest day of the year. Even if it had have been today… there’s a lot more coldness there.”

Local councillor Martin Browne offered his sympathies to the parents of the little girl, saying it was his hope now that the local community would rally around them.

“I just hope that they’re able to get the support and privacy they’ll need now during this terrible time.

“I’m sure everyone in and around the village of Dundrum will be thinking of them.”

A family friend said: “The entire community is in shock. It is a huge tragedy. The family are very highly respected in the area. They are hard working, decent people.

“The father is very popular in the community and he would be big into GAA, sport and activities.

“He is a hard worker and just goes about his business and it’s just a terrible, terrible tragedy. He is crippled with grief.”

A report is being prepared for the coroners court and a post-mortem is expected to be carried out in the hospital today.

Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan was all fury as he responded to the allegation by Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State that he (Jonathan) denied some states ecological fund for sentimental reasons.

He branded el-Rufai’s allegation as a lie and said he“has an incurable knack for lying.”

The governor had told reporters in Abuja on Thursday that Jonathan took N2bn each from the Ecological Fund and “gave to some PDP states. Any PDP state that was not his friend, like Kano and Kwara, didn’t get.”

But reacting yesterday in a statement through Ikechukwu Eze, his Media Adviser, Jonathan said:

“That Malam Nasir El-Rufai, Governor of Kaduna State, has an incurable knack for lying has been proved by his own boss, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who described el-Rufai in his book-My Watch Volume 2- as follows: ‘Nasir’s penchant for reputation savaging is almost pathological. Why does he do it? He is brilliant and smart. I grant him that also. Very early in my interaction with him, I appreciated his talent and brilliance. At the same time, I recognised his weaknesses; the worst being his inability to be loyal to anybody or any issue consistently for long, but only to Nasir el-Rufai. He barefacedly lied which he did to me against his colleagues and so-called friends.’

“With such a description, we are not surprised at his recent comments after the just-concluded National Economic Council meeting where he accused former President Jonathan of only sharing the National Ecological Fund to PDP states. Mr. el-Rufai lied as follows:

“What President Goodluck Jonathan did was to take N2bn each from the Ecological Fund and gave to some PDP states. Any PDP state that was not his friend, like Kano and Kwara, didn’t get.

“It is so easy to expose Malam Nasir el-Rufai as a liar being that Akwa-Ibom, a PDP state governed by the then Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and a close confidante and major supporter of the then President, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, did not get the monies alluded to by Malam el-Rufai from the Ecological Fund as did multiple other PDP states, including Ekiti State, a state governed by a thoroughbred patriot and Jonathan’s supporter, Ayo Fayose.

“Also, it is false that non-PDP states did not get monies from the fund. Nemesis catches up faster with liars than any other agent of evil. el-Rufai was probably led by the gods against his own sinister plot to confess in another breathe that states under non-PDP parties like APGA and Labour party also benefitted.

“The fact remains that the Ecological Fund is a specialized fund with certain constitutional requirements which must be met before a state can access the fund. Every state benefitted from the fund under President Jonathan who bent over backwards to accommodate states that had difficulty meeting the criteria for accessing the fund.

“el-Rufai’s sinister narrative was intentionally silent on the over N10 billion specially deployed to fund the Great Green Wall (GGW) project in some northern states, in view of the need to work with the rest of Africa on the African initiative to check desert encroachment in the Sahelian states. These states included Zamfara, Jigawa, Kebbi, Sokoto, Katsina and Adamawa. Others are Yobe, Borno and Kano which belong to Mallam el-Rufai’s class of ‘non-friendly’ states that he alleged never benefitted from any discretionary fund.

“Similar principle applies to the conditions for accessing the Universal Basic Education fund where some states have not had access to what is due them because they are yet to fulfil the mandatory criteria for allocation. Would it then be right in the name of el-Rufai’s position on equity to blame the failure of those states to access their UBEC funds on Jonathan? It is really sad that judicious presidential interventions to tackle emergencies and other pressing national needs are being interrogated in a rather facile manner by those who never get tired of playing dirty politics.

“Nigerians may recall that this is not the first time that el-Rufai has vented his known passion for lying against the former President.

“The public will recall that in October 2015, he falsely alleged that former President Jonathan spent a whopping N64 billion on Independence Day celebrations, during his tenure when in fact only N333 million was spent.

“Nigerians may also recall that this same el-Rufai falsely accused former President Jonathan and former CAN President, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, of founding and funding Boko Haram to the tune of N50 billion.

“We can only wonder what new false accusation el-Rufai may come up with tomorrow, as with him it is a case of one day, one lie!

“We, therefore, urge Nigerians to be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath whenever this notorious liar opens his mouth.”

The s*xy rapper whose fiancée, Caesar Ume-Ezeoke, fired back at Iyanya last week for mocking her 16-months engagement earlier this week, also decided to respond to Iyanya’s mockery, and spared nothing as she went all out in a hilarious video on her Instagram page. 

 

The delectable hip-hop artiste, Eva Alordia, who is considered as one of the best female rappers in Nigeria, set the record straight about the misconception that she has been engaged for 16-months, and lashed out at Iyanya, asking him and others who have been criticizing her 16-months engagement, to mind their business, stressing that her love life is nobody’s concern.

“For your official information, yes, I have been engaged for 15-months, and in those 15-months that I’ve been engaged, I have been dating my sweetheart for 16-months. Koren who taught them at Ohuhu Community Secondary School Amaogwugu in Umuahia, Abia state between 1964-1966 (over 50 years ago).
