The Chief Medical Director, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, Prof Akeem Lasisi has revealed the real cause of the death of the Senator representing Osun-West senatorial district, Chief Isiaka Adeleke.

According to Lasisi, Adeleke died of an overdose of banned injections.

Testifying before a coroner, Mr Olusegun Ayilara, in Osogbo, on Monday, Lasisi, who spoke from the witness box, said the Chief Medical Director of Biket Hospital, Osogbo, Dr Adebisi Adenle, called him on the telephone on April 23 to tell him that Adeleke had died.

Lasisi, who said he saw Adeleke’s corpse on a table at LAUTECH’s morgue, added that a pathologist, one Dr Solaja, two resident doctors, who are also pathologists, the Officer in Charge of Homicide, Osun State Police Command, Divisional Police Officer, Dugbe Police Station, Osogbo, and the Consultant Pathologist, LAUTECH, were all present when an autopsy was carried out on Adeleke.

Lasisi said the aide informed him that the person, who treated Adeleke was not a doctor but could not say if he was a nurse.

The CMD stated that he, however, failed to ask for the name of the person who treated Adeleke but he wanted to know what was administered and the competence of the person that administered the drugs.

He said among the injections given to Adeleke was Analgin, which he said was outlawed when the late Prof Dora Akunyili was the Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control.

He said,

“I saw the corpse. Before any process of examination of any diagnosis in medicine, there is what we call history before examination. So, we asked for the person who knew the conditions surrounding the death of the senator.
“So, the family pointed to one of the aides and the aide said he (Adeleke) was active the previous day and he came at midnight and started complaining of leg pain. So, they sent for somebody who came to give him injections.

“I asked clearly the medical status of the person that administered the injections. I asked, ‘Is the person a doctor?’ but he said no. ‘Is he a nurse’?, he said he didn’t know but the person was a face they were used to.

“He mentioned various injections, so at that point I asked him if could lay his hands on the empty ampoules of the injections. The family members went home to get them. The injections were five per cent dextrose. We saw empty sachets; it was like a fluid and with it, we saw an intravenous fluid-giving set and scalp vein needle. We saw that empty.

We saw two ampoules of Analgin, four ampoules of valium (diazepam) – 10ml each making 40 milligrammes, one ampoule of pentazocine, one ampoule of gentamicin and two ampoules of hydrocortisone.

“All of these were empty and his aide said these were what he was given. He also added that after he had been given, he (Adeleke) called him that he doesn’t want to entertain any visitor and he went to sleep. He (the aide) said he later went back to check him and saw that the senator’s eyes were wide open but he wasn’t breathing.”

The CMD added that diazepam ‘sedates and tranquilises when given in moderate dosage’ but said it could knock off reflexes if given in the type of dosage Adeleke was given and could eventually lead to death.

He stated that if the injection would be given intravenously at all, it should be given at a facility where the patient could be resuscitated with artificial oxygen in case his breathing stopped.

“Analgin has been outlawed since the days of Dora Akunyili in NAFDAC. So, I don’t know where they got it from. They were given in excess dosage,” he said.

Also the Osun State Deputy Governor, Mrs Titi Laoye-Tomori, in her testimony before the coroner, said Adeleke hesitated before he ate three spoonfuls of rice at a funeral ceremony in Osun State, a day before he died.

Beauty John, one of the 158 people deported from Libya last Thursday, has described her five months experience in the Libyan prison as the most horrible time of her life.

The 22-year-old lady, who hails from Edo State, said she embarked on the trip to Italy through the desert in search of greener pastures, only to discover that she was pregnant while in the prison, for not having the necessary documents to be in the country.

Describing her being alive as a miracle, she disclosed that she gave birth inside the prison, but could not breast-feed her baby for some days due to lack of medical care.

The nursing mother said: “One of my aunts, who stays in Italy, visited Benin and told some of us to come over, promising to help us secure jobs. Five of us made up our minds to go, but at the end, I was the only one who could raise money for the trip.

The trip

“On July 11, 2016, some other male friends and I left Benin for Sokoto State, through the desert. We got to Libya a week after and stayed somewhere in preparation for the trip to Italy by sea. “Unfortunately, we were caught by some security agents. After profiling us, we were taken to a cell in the desert, where I spent five months.

“While in the cell, I discovered I was pregnant for my boyfriend, who lives in Benin. My experience in the desert cell could best be described as hell. Sometimes, we were given a slice of bread as breakfast and watery spaghetti for diner. No lunch. “Some inmates I met in the cell died as a result of malnutrition and lack of proper medical care, while others lost their sight. “I also fell sick. That I gave birth and we are both alive today is a miracle.

“After giving birth, my baby cried for days without food, as my breasts were not bringing out milk. I was advised to put it in his mouth like that. I cried and regretted embarking on the journey. I thought my baby and I will die of starvation. “Finally, help came my way when the Nigerian Ambassador to Libya visited the cell and asked if we would like to go back home. I am grateful to God that I am alive to share my story.”

Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, has admitted that he is not sure when he will be able to select Paul Pogba again.

Pogba did not travel with United for Sunday’s 2-1 Premier League defeat at Tottenham, after his father passed away last Friday.

Mourinho does not expect him to be back in time for Wednesday’s trip to St Mary’s Stadium, as he will be attending the funeral.

“I don’t think [he will be available],” he said.

“I think that his dad’s funeral has to be between Tuesday and Wednesday in France.

“I don’t think Paul has conditions to play, we let him be completely free until when he’s ready to be back.”

United will take on Crystal Palace in their last Premier League game of the season, before facing Ajax in the final of the Europa League.

Estranged husband of Nollywood actress, Mercy Aigbe, Lanre Gentry, has called on government to improve prison facilities across Nigeria instead of getting involved in issues of domestic violence.

Gentry said the Medium Prison, Kirikiri is supposed to be a correctional facility but instead, it is an overpopulated arena where people die every night.

Recall, Lanre was on May 9th, 2017 sent to Kirikiri prison, following allegation of domestic violence against his wife, Aigbe.

He was, however, released on Tuesday.

Upon his release, Gentry had said he had something to reveal to the world.

He said, “I have something to tell the world about my prison life and how it happened.

“Watch out for my story.”

But, in a post on his Instagram page, Gentry said, “Like I have said earlier that I have something to tell the world due to my fresh experience at the medium prison, (Kirikiri apapa)

“Over 3600 prisoners, where we are meant to have just 1500 prisoners. Prisoners are now more or less like beggars.

“I have been there not that am been told, people die every blessed day, am here to tell the whole world that please lets fight this out with our government because I see no reason why tax are being collected and nothing has been produce and provided through all this payment.

“Is it that they’ve forgotten this people are still Nigerian citizens?

“If I may say, government shouldn’t leave what they ought to do and start involving its selves in (domestic violence).

” I won’t say more than this tonight but more to come to come every night.‎”
