Lagos Hairdresser Commits Suicide Over N150,000 Loan by Airdy(m) : 7:26 pm On May 15

This is quite sad! A hairdresser, Yetunde Oladipupo, aka Iyabo, has committed suicide on Onabola Street, Owotutu, in the Somolu area of Lagos.

It was learnt that Yetunde took an insecticide, Sniper, on Friday shortly after seeing off friends who had visited her.

Although the cause of the visit could not be ascertained, it was gathered that the mother of 4 went to a shop afterwards and bought the insecticide.

She was said to have taken it and was rushed to the General Hospital, Gbagada, where she died.

The Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun State indigene, Punch reports, had taken a loan of about N150,000 from a microfinance bank and the creditor had been pestering her to pay.

A resident, who did not want to be identified, said the victim was always depressed because she had no means of repaying the debt.

He said, “Iyabo (Yetunde) has four children and her husband is based in Abuja. He comes home once in a while. She was a hairdresser and had a small shop where she sold some things.

“She borrowed N150,000 from a microfinance bank. When the pressure became too much for her and she could not pay, she became desperate, drank the insecticide and died.”

Another resident said two friends had visited her a few minutes before the incident, adding that it was after the visit that she decided to take her life.

She said, “Around 7pm, two friends visited her and she saw them off. As she was returning, she went to a shop opposite her house where they sell provisions.

“After picking the insecticide, she asked the shopkeeper for a nylon wrapper, but the shopkeeper declined her request and said she should return the insecticide. She kept it somewhere around her dress and left.

“As she was ascending the stairs to the first floor where she lived, she drank the insecticide. Within seconds, she started feeling uncomfortable and called her five-year-old child to go and get help. She was rolling on the floor and groaning with pain.

“Everybody was alarmed upon seeing the empty container of the insecticide. She was taken to a private hospital on the street, but she was rejected. She was then rushed to the General Hospital, Gbagada, where about five doctors struggled to save her life. She, however, died.”

A top official of the general hospital confirmed that the victim was brought to the hospital around 7pm, adding that she died in the early hours of Saturday.

He said, “The woman was brought to the hospital around 7pm on Friday and her people said she collected a loan which she could not repay. We don’t know the details. Doctors tried to save her life, but she could not make it.”

23-year-old sues father for delaying her marriage in Abuja by Airdy(m) : 11:19 pm On May 16

A girl, Khadija Ibrahim, on Monday, sued her father, Ibrahim Bassa, before at an Upper Area Court, Karu, Abuja for not allowing her to marry a man of her choice.

She told the court that she had a suitor, who was willing to marry her, but her father had refused to give his consent to her request for marriage.

“He has refused to grant my request for marriage and he has also not given me a satisfactory explanation to that effect.
“The man I want to marry has made several attempts to meet with my father to discuss the wedding plan but he always avoided him.
“The day my suitor will be coming, that is the day my father will leave the house for an unknown place and this habit is delaying our marriage plan.
“The only reason he gave me was that the man I want to marry is not Fulani, which is not satisfactory to me because that is the only man I love.”

She pleaded with the court to order her father to allow her to get married to the suitor whose name she gave as Abdulhamidu.

“I want the court to compel him to give a satisfactory reason why I cannot marry the man I love,’’ she said.

On his part, the respondent, Bassa, told the court that the allegations of his daughter were all true.

“It is true that I have not granted the man any audience.
“I have always avoided him because I am against his choice as a suitor.
“I have warned my daughter that marriage is not a child’s play. How can she get married to a man whose root and origin are not known to us?
“He said, if you are getting married in the Fulani tribe, the man or woman’s immediate and extended families must be known to everyone.
“My Lord, she is too young to make a choice of marriage and even to marry an outsider but she has remained adamant and even brought me to court,’’ he said.

The judge Abdullahi Baba, adjourned the matter till May 29.

He advised everyone to maintain peace and asked all the parties involved including the plaintiff and her suitor to appear in court on the next date of adjournment.

How We Discovered Bags Filled With Foreign Currencies In Justice Ngwuta;s House – Witness by Airdy(m) : 5:47 am On May 17

An operative of the Department of State Service, John Utazi, on Tuesday narrated to a Federal High Court in Abuja how his team conducted the search of the Abuja residence of a Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Sylvester Ngwuta, on October 7, 2016.

Utazi, a DSS’ Staff Officer, who was testifying as the fifth prosecution witness in the ongoing trial of the Justice of the apex court, said bags filled with local and foreign currencies as well as documents including building plans, land documents, vehicle papers and statements of bank accounts, were uncovered during the search of judge’s house.

The witness led by the lead prosecuting counsel, Mrs. Olufemi Fatunde, while testifying before the court presided over by Justice John Tsoho on Tuesday.

He said the policemen and private security guards assigned to the Supreme Court Quarters, where Ngwuta’s residence was located, initially did not let him and other operatives into the premises until the guards got the approval of their “superiors”.

He said when he and his team members were eventually let into the defendant’s residence, the defendant declined an offer to search all the operatives in the team before the commencement of the operation.

Utazi said, “He was standing in the sitting room on the ground floor when we met him.

“I introduced myself and my team members to him and we showed the defendant our identity cards.

“I also gave him the search warrant to read, after which he asked us if the Chief Justice of Nigeria was aware. “I answered that I was not aware.

“Thereafter, I requested the defendant to search me and members of my team.

“He declined and said there was no trouble.

“However, I asked my team members to search one another in his presence.

“After, we told the defendant that we were ready to conduct the search.”

According to the witness, his team began the operation upstairs of the duplex apartment by searching the sitting room and four bedrooms, including the one designated as the judge’s study, on the floor.

He said his team discovered huge cash sums in some bags kept in the wardrobes in one of the rooms and other cash in foreign currencies in another room.

Utaz said, “He took us upstairs of his residence. There were four rooms and a sitting room upstairs. The four rooms included the defendant’s study.

“He took us to the first bedroom. We started searching while he sat on a seat.

“There were two wardrobes in the room. One was by a closet and the other was facing the closet. As we opened the one facing the closet, there were bags. We opened the bags and asked the defendant to see the content. The content was money.

“The second wardrobe was concealed with a cloth.”

On what was found in the second wardrobe after it was opened, the witness said, “When the wardrobe was opened, we saw a lot of bags and we filled with foreign currencies.”

The witness added, “He took us to another bedroom. We searched it again and we also discovered money.

“After the second bedroom, he took us to his study.

“In the study room, we recovered bank statements, building plans, land documents, documents relating to the defendant’s salary and some vehicle papers.”

He said the fourth room upstairs and other parts of the house were searched but nothing incriminating was found in them.

The witness said further that his team later returned to the ground floor, where the two rooms and two sitting rooms located there, were searched but that nothing “incriminating” was found.

He said his team also searched the kitchen, the boys’ quarters and the car park on the premises but nothing incriminating was discovered..

Utaz added, “We brought down the items recovered to the sitting room downstairs, where we counted the money.

“We documented everything on the back of the search warrant.

“The documentation was done in his presence.

“I endorsed the documented items recovered and also gave it to him to see.

“After seeing it, he read through and signed on it.

“Thereafter, I assembled all items recovered and told the defendant to search us just like we did when we came in.

“The defendant declined to search us but we searched ourselves in the presence of the defendant.

“We then requested the defendant to follow us and he did follow us.”

The search warrant dated October 5, 2016 issued by a Magistrate Court in Abuja was tendered by the prosecuting counsel and was admitted by Justice Tsoho as an exhibit.

The case was fixed for Wednesday to enable the lead defence counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), is to cross-examine the witness.

Meanwhile, the prosecution again on Tuesday, amended the corruption charges it preferred against Justice Ngwuta.

Three amendments have now been done to the charges originally filed in December 2016.

Shortly after the lead prosecuting counsel, Mrs. Olufemi Fatunde, announced the latest development to the court on Tuesday, the amended charges were read to the defendant, who pleaded not guilty all the 13 counts.

The amended charges have only one additional count.

The additional count was earlier removed in the previous amended done in March this year.

The re-introduced count has to do with allegation that Justice Ngwuta gave false information to the Nigerian Immigration Service concerning his diplomatic passport with the purpose of procuring another one.

Other charges, including money laundering allegations of retention and concealment of origin of various sums of money in local and foreign currencies allegedly recovered from him during the raid of the operatives of the Department of State Service on October 8, 2016, remained part of the amended charges.

He was also accused, as contained in the previous charges, of giving various cash sums of money above the statutory threshold to his building contractor for the building of various houses in his home state, Ebonyi State, without going through a financial institution.

The lead defence counsel, Agabi, said he had no objection to the amendment and the reading of the charges, but expressed concerns about the frequency of the alterations to the charges.

He noted that it was a confirmation that the prosecution was merely “fishing”.

He also told the judge that the court had the power to reject the amendment if the court was not convinced about it.

He added, “We shall eventually address your lordship on the several amendments.

“It further confirms that the prosecution is fishing.”

Justice Tsoho eventually directed the amended charges to be read to the defendant, who pleaded not guilty to all the counts.

Immediately after Ngwuta took his plea to the amended charges, a DSS operative, Mr. Tanimola Alao, who is the Senior Security and Intelligence Officer of the DSS, also testified on how he obtained Justice Ngwuta’s statement at the DSS office in Abuja on October 9, 2016.

He said Ngwuta signed the statement form containing the cautionary words and after Justice Ngwuta finished with the writing the chief investigator counter-signed the statement.

He added, “I endorsed the statement to the effect that the statement was written voluntarily. The defendant signed and dated it.”

Under cross-examination by the prosecuting counsel, said he did not know what Ngwuta wrote down in the statement as his brief was just to witness the writing of the statement.

STOP ALLOCATING SOLDIERS TO POLITICIANS , GOVERNOR WIKE TELLS ARMY HIGH COMMAND by Airdy(m) : 7:51 am On May 18

STOP ALLOCATING SOLDIERS TO POLITICIANS , GOVERNOR WIKE  TELLS ARMY HIGH COMMAND

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has urged the Army High Command  to desist from posting battalions of soldiers to politicians, saying it is counter-productive  and a threat to national security.

The governor said that the Chief of Army Staff, General Tukur Buratai should go beyond complaining that politicians are hobnobing with soldiers and take action to check the disturbing trend.

Speaking during the flag off of the construction of the Old Aba Road by Mbano junction in Oyigbo Local Government Area on Wednesday , Governor Wike said all over the world, only the Commander-in-Chief has soldiers guarding him.

He regretted that  in Nigeria, the authorities  have made it a practice  to allocate soldiers to politicians  in the good books of the Federal Government, with such soldiers used for undemocratic actions against the people.

He said: "Who are those approving soldiers battalions of soldiers to politicians?  If they don't want soldiers to follow politicians, they should stop giving soldiers to politicians.

"It is only in Nigeria that soldiers follow politicians.  They should stop soldiers from being security details   to politicians.  Somebody  comes home and they will give him battalions of soldiers and they say soldiers should not hobnob with politicians.

"All over the world, it is only the commander-in-chief that is allowed to use soldiers. But here, you see soldiers following  politicians everywhere ".

On the construction of Old Aba Road by Mbano Junction in Oyigbo Local Government Area , the governor assured the people of the area that the road will be completed on schedule.

He added that the Old Market Road to  Afam will be awarded and constructed by his administration  in Oyigbo Local Government Area.

He said  since the APC Federal Government has refused to complete the East West Road, his administration will continue  to develop  alternative  routes to lubricate  the Rivers economy.

He said that his performance  has silenced the APC, urging the people of the state to turn out enmasse  for the voter registration, so that they can vote out failed politicians.

In his remarks, Works Commissioner, Mr Iheanyichuwu Bathuel said that Old Aba Road by Mbano junction is a critical  economic  road that connects neighbouring  states.

Also speaking, Caretaker Committee Chairman of Oyigbo Local Government Area, Dr Gbali Chisom lauded Governor Wike  for commencing the construction of the road.

Highpoint of the road flag off was the presentation of gifts to the Rivers State Governor by the political leader of Oyigbo, Ambassador Desmond Akawor

Simeon Nwakaudu,

Special Assistant to the Rivers State Governor, Electronic Media.
