He was the Senator representing Lagos East at the 9th Nigerian National Assembly.

Over the years, cost of marrying in Nigeria especially in some southeastern parts of country has become a focal point of discourse.

It should be recalled that yesterday, a lady made headlines after she told a story of her husband who vowed never to help her family because they gave him a marriage list worth over N580k.

It is sequel to this that popular Nigerian author and former presidential aide, Reno Omokri has advised young men on what to do when bride’s family gives them expensive marriage list.

He advised young men to go to the nearest marriage registry and marry inexpensively.

“If she refuses, perhaps she is not the one”, he advised.

Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Rema have been nominated for the upcoming 2020 BET Awards.

BET has announced The 2020 Award nominees and three Nigerians were included. This year’s nominees no doubt shows black excellence across music, television, film, sports, and philanthropy. The award show is scheduled to broadcast premiere on CBS come Sunday, June 28, 2020.

Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Rema are the only Nigerians nominated in three different categories. Burna Boy who won the Best International Act category at the 2019 BET Awards, was nominated again this year for the Best International Act Award category alongside South African singer Sho Madjozi, Stormzy, Dave from the UK, Ninho,  and S.Pri Noir from France.

Rema is in the fan-voted category of Best New International Act together with Zimbabwe’s Sha Sha, Celeste, Young T, and Bugsey from the UK and France’s Hatik and Stacy. This would be his first nomination for the award.

Wizkid was also nominated for the HER award for his feature in the “Brown Skin Girl” with Beyonce. They were nominated alongside Alicia Keys, Ciara, Layton Greene, Lizzo, and Rhapsody.

English football icon, Andy Cole has admitted that he was left so starstruck standing beside Ronaldo de Lima in the tunnel before Manchester United’s clash with Inter in 1999, that he almost wet himself.

Cole, a Manchester United favourite,  played for the club from 1995 to 2001, scoring 121 goals in 275 appearances.

Brazilian legend Ronaldo returned to Inter’s starting line-up after missing the first leg, to set up a battle between Cole who was topping charts at the time.

Cole says being face to face with Ronaldo was a surreal experience for him.

Cole speaking to the Beautiful Game Podcast said: “I remember when we played Inter Milan that same season and I lined up in the tunnel and I saw Ronaldo. I’m not gonna lie, I nearly wet myself!

“This is the guy I’ve watched for years. I’m talking about a baller, a straight baller. He had everything in the locker and I’m standing in the tunnel at the San Siro and I’m saying: ‘This is sick!’, but when you’re at that level and you think, ‘Man, I’m actually at this level with these guys. I’m on the same pitch as these guys, I’m on that level’, it’s surreal.

“I’m always honest and I’m always open when it comes to things like this. Playing against these kinds of guys.

“It’s something that when I do take the opportunity to look back, I say to my boys: ‘I’ve done alright. I’ve half made it!’.”

According to Cole, injuries prevented Ronaldo from sweeping all the individual awards at the height of his career, saying kids today are more aware of the Portuguese namesake Cristiano Ronaldo, at Juventus.

“If you speak to a lot of the kids now and you speak about Brazilian Ronaldo, they look at you like you’ve got three heads because they don’t know who he is,” he added. “If we take away his injuries, he could have gone on to ?win Ballon d’Or after Ballon d’Or and scored a zillion goals. He was a baller! He was an absolute baller.

“Of course, we’re gonna talk about Cristiano Ronaldo on that level as R9 because that’s what we see now, that’s what the kids see now – but if you take away that injury, he was sick, a proper baller.”

Beyoncé has written an open letter to Kentucky’s Attorney General Daniel Cameron, urging him to use his power to bring criminal charges against the officers who shot and killed Breonna Taylor in her home.

Breonna, a 26-year-old African-American emergency medical technician, was shot dead by Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) officers on March 13, 2020.

Three officers executing a no-knock search warrant entered Breonna’s apartment in Louisville, Kentucky. Gunfire was exchanged between Taylor’s boyfriend Kenneth Walker and the officers. Walker said he believed that the officers were intruders. The LMPD officers fired over twenty shots and Breonna Taylor was hit 8 times. She died in her hallway.

Breonna’s death has angered a lot of people and there have been calls for justice.

In a letter posted on Beyoncé’s official website on June 14, the singer urged the Attorney General to “commit to transparency in the investigation and prosecution of these officers’ criminal conduct” and investigate the police department’s response to Taylor’s murder.

Beyonce’s letter reads: “Three months have passed — and the LMPD’s investigations have created more questions than answers. Their incident report states that Ms. Taylor suffered no injuries — yet we know she was shot at least eight times. The LMPD officers claim they announced themselves before forcing their way into Ms. Taylor’s apartment — but her boyfriend who was with her, as well as several neighbors, all say that this is untrue.

“Three months have passed — and zero arrests have been made, and no officers have been fired. The LMPD’s investigation was turned over to your office, and yet all of the officers involved in the shooting remain employed by the LMPD. Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly and Officers Myles Cosgrove and Brett Hankison must be held accountable for their actions.

“Three months have passed — and Breonna Taylor’s family still waits for justice. Ms. Taylor’s family has not been able to take time to process and grieve. Instead, they have been working tirelessly to rally the support of friends, their community, and the country to obtain justice for Breonna.

“Your office has both the power and the responsibility to bring justice to Breonna Taylor, and demonstrate the value of a Black woman’s life.”

She added in the letter: “Don’t let this case fall into the pattern of no action after a terrible tragedy. With every death of a Black person at the hands of the police, there are two real tragedies: The death itself, and the inaction and delays that follow it. This is your chance to end that pattern. Take swift and decisive action in charging the officers. The next months cannot loo like the last three.”

Beyoncé then urged her fans to sign a coinciding petition, located at the bottom of the letter, to demand further justice for Taylor.

Last month, Beyoncé also demanded justice for George Floyd who died after a Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for about 8 minutes 46 seconds while he begged that he cannot breathe.

She said in a video at the time: “We all witnessed his murder in broad daylight. We’re broken and we’re disgusted. We cannot normalize this pain. I’m not only speaking to people of color. If you’re white, black, brown, or anything in between, I’m sure you feel hopeless about the racism going on in America right now. No more senseless killings of human beings. No more seeing people of color as less than human. We can no longer look away.”

The Lagos Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arrested five alleged internet fraudsters.

They included popular social media sensation, Adedamola Adewale, popularly known as ‘Adeherself’ on Instagram.

A statement by EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale, disclosed that the suspects were apprehended in different areas of Lagos during a raid by operatives.

While Adewale, 20, and his accomplice, Lamina Hamzat Ajibola, were arrested at the Agungi area of Lekki, the trio of Israel Onyebuchi, Emmanuel Olayode and Valentine Nwokorie were picked up at Ibeju-Lekki.

EFCC said the arrest of Adewale and Ajibola “was sequel to intelligence linking them to online fraudulent activities with two brothers, Lasisi Wasiu Adeleke and Lasisi Riliwan Adeniyi, who are at large.”

The agency revealed that they were arrested at a four-bedroom duplex belonging to the two run-away fraudsters.

The statement said during interrogation, “Adewale, a self-acclaimed model, who goes by the username @adeherself on Instagram, confessed to being a picker” in cybercrimes.”

Items recovered from the suspects included two Toyota Camry 2009 model cars, and a sum of N9 million found in Adewale’s account.

The other suspects Onyebuchi, Olayode and Nwokorie were arrested for their alleged involvement in a romance scam.

They were arrested during another raid, following a separate intelligence.

EFCC said “Nwokorie was posing as a female American citizen and sending photos as a porn star to defraud his victim while Onyebuchi was engaging in a love scam as well as forging foreign cheques.”

Recall that 3 weeks ago, Teni gifted Adeherself’s mother 100k after she expressed love for her.

A Nigerian man who sent Jude Okoye death threats via DM on social media has been arrested by the Police.

Jude Okoye made this known in a recent post he shared on his official Instagram page today, June 16.

Jude recently declared search for the young man after he received threatening messages from him.

According to the young man, he felt pained that Jude “ended” Cynthia Morgan’s music career, thus sent him death threats.

It should be recalled that several weeks ago, Cynthia Morgan called out her former manager, Jude Okoye for allegedly taking all she laboured for.

Announcing his arrest on Instagram, Jude simply wrote; “Update: He’s found @Opetodolapo”

Jude Okoye has shared screenshots of threatening messages he received from a man on social media over Cynthia Morgan’s career saga.

The music executive also posted photos of the man who sent him the death threats and tagged the Nigeria Police Force as well as the Chief Superintendent of Police, Dolapo Badmus to the post on Instagram.

In the messages which were sent back in May, the man called the music executive a ‘career killer’ over his recent row with Cynthia Morgan and threatened to eliminate him whenever he sees him in Lagos.

Army kills 13 Boko Haram terrorists

The Troops of Army Super Camp 11 Gamboru in Ngala LGA of Borno State neutralized thirteen Boko Haram fighters.

They were killed, on the 14th of June, at Kusumu, Warshele Kumo, Diime and Sabori villages – which are the terrorists’ logistics base.

According to the statement released by the Defence Headquarters, items recovered from the base includes;

21 locally made guns captured

2 Dane guns

1 sniper rifle

36 hand grenade

1 IED

American stand-up comedian and actor, Chris D’Elia, 40, has denied ‘knowingly’ texting minors after multiple women accused him of sexually pursuing and grooming underage girls.

This comes 24 hours after the allegations were made against the ‘You’ actor.

In a Twitter thread, one lady with the handle @girlpowertbh alleged that she was “groomed” by D’Elia in 2014 when she was 16 years old.

Shortly after the thread went viral, other women came forward with their allegations of sexual harassment, including one user who alleged that D’Elia “solicited nudes from minors in Vancouver and tried to f**k her friend when they were 16.”

Reacting to the allegations, the stand-up comedian denied ever going after any underage women at any point in his career, and said all his relationships have been both legal and consensual.

He told TMZ: “I know I have said and done things that might have offended people during my career, but I have never knowingly pursued any underage women at any point.” 

Chris goes on to say, “All of my relationships have been both legal and consensual and I have never met or exchanged any inappropriate photos with the people who have tweeted about me.”

He added: “That being said, I really am truly sorry. I was a dumb guy who ABSOLUTELY let myself get caught up in my lifestyle. That’s MY fault. I own it. I’ve been reflecting on this for some time now and I promise I will continue to do better.”

Science, technology and innovation will be at the heart of Africa’s recovery from the devastating coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and the continent’s ability to create sustainable jobs, Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), Vera Songwe, has said.

In remarks at the beginning of a five-day virtual COVID-19 Africa Innovation and Investment Forum 2020, Ms. Songwe said Africa needs innovations to drive homegrown solutions out of the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic recession it has triggered the world over.

“We need investments in innovation, science and technology to understand how we can protect our citizens and also as a way of growing out of this crisis. STI will be at the heart of Africa’s recovery and its ability to create sustainable jobs; that is why for a very long time ECA has been talking of the importance also of intellectual property rights to protect the innovations of Africa’s youth,” she said.

Ms. Songwe said the current costs of IP registrations on the continent were prohibitive and not rewarding innovation.

“This is not a strategy for growth,” she said, adding: “As we talk of science, technology and innovation, we also need to make sure that our policymakers ensure that our technological platforms are robust.”

“This virus has highlighted the importance of science, technology and innovation and the need for Africa to build a much stronger, much more collaborative scientific technology industrial base.” She added that partnerships were needed across the continent to “ensure that as we build on the African Continental Free Trade Area, we develop, discover and innovate collaboratively”.

Ms. Songwe said Africa also needs to come together to see how it can be part of the big drive to find a vaccine for COVID-19 and other diseases affecting the continent.

“If Africa is to succeed in getting out of this crisis in a sustainable way, technology is going to have to be the cornerstone of that success,” she said, adding the continent needs to innovate collectively and support its youth to innovate by creating the necessary infrastructure to create quality jobs, spur economic growth and promote health.

Ms. Songwe said it was unacceptable that only 25 percent of Africa’s population has access to quality, affordable and reliable broadband.

“We surely can do more to improve Internet penetration on the continent, especially as a lot of jobs and wealth are going to come out of innovation.”

Ethiopia’s Education Minister, Mr. Getahun Mekuria; the African Union Commissioner for Human Resources, Science and Technology, Ms. Sarah Anyang Agbor; and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s Hubert Gijzen, also spoke in the opening session emphasising the importance of STI to the African continent at this particular time.

“Africa has a lot of assets, be it its vast natural resources or its youth, but we will continue to lag exponentially behind if we do not fuel our own innovations,” Mr. Mekuria said.

Ms. Agbor said lack of capacity was a major issue the continent needs to address.

“We need to boost strategic investments in STI if we are to deliver Africa’s aspirations as enunciated in Agenda 2063,” she said, adding the private sector had a key role to play in helping the continent translate research into innovation.

For his part, Mr. Gijzen, Regional Director and Representative for the UNESCO Regional Office for Southern Africa, said: “We are so focused on combating the coronavirus at the moment, but we should not forget the sustainable development goals. The SDGs should remain our compass even as we fight the pandemic.”

He said the crisis has encouraged open science as the search for a cure and a vaccine continues. He added that linking investment to innovation was critical.

Mr. Daan du Toit, Deputy-Director General, International Cooperation and Resources in the Department of Science and Innovation in South Africa, said Africa should do all it can to use STI to bolster growth in the aftermath of COVID-19, adding it was very much about involving the young people.

Paul Okoye of the defunct Psquare has said their forefathers engaged in fraud but they did it “codedly, silently” and with “no show off”.

He added that the show off of wealth is what gets them in trouble with the law.

He also called out the instagram commenters who judge the fraudsters after seieng their photos.

He wrote: “See make I tell una… Even before FBI, Interpol, or EFCC catch una… Social media and the association of Instagram commenters don judge una case finish.”

He added: “Association of Instagram commenters (A. I. C) also known as Amebo Intelligent Center, I just de hail una.”

Executives of Ward 10 of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Esako Local Government Area of Edo State have lifted the suspension off the National Chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomhole.

Seventeen members of the executive committee, led by the ward’s Vice Chairman, Adizetu Jafaru, and Secretary, Emuakemeh Sule, said this in Abuja on Saturday while meeting the APC National Working Committee (NWC).

Sule said that the executive committee of APC Etsako Ward 10 made the resolution after its meeting on June 4 at the party’s secretariat Apana-Uzairue, Edo.

“We have reviewed the circumstances leading to the suspension of Oshiomhole and found no merit in the allegation or processes employed.

“We hereby lift the suspension placed on Oshiomhole by the ward.

“We call on all organs of our great party to restore all rights and privileges of membership to Oshiomhole,” the party’s scribe said.

The acting APC National Chairman, Abiola Ajimobi, represented by the National Vice Chairman, South/South, Hilliard Etta, recieved the ward officials.

“Let me say that 17 out of 27 members have signed this resolution. Let me also say that in matters of this nature, our constitution provides for only a simple majority and 17 out of 27 is indeed more than a simple majority.

“So, we want to use this opportunity to thank Etsako West Ward 10 for what they have done. History will be on your side.

“I am also in receipt of the acceptance and ratification of that resolution by the Etsako West LGA executive dated the 9th of June 2020 and signed by the Chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Akokia and the Secretary, Hon. Dauda Ahmed.

“I am also in receipt of further ratification by the state executive committee of the APC in Edo state signed by Col. David Imuse (rtd) the acting state Chairman and Lawrence O. Oka, state Secretary,” he said.

According to him, the party’s NWC will meet and deliberate on the resolutions by the ward, local and state organs of the party, for ratification.

Luck smiled on 9 year old singer, Joseph Oluomachi Opara as Governor Hope Uzodinma announced that he has adopted him as his child, and vowed to sponsor him from primary school to Catholic priesthood.

The Imo born singer made waves in the internet during the weekend with a video of his catholic hymn songs which marked him out as a specially talented kid singer. This attracted instant applause and commendations from the public.

Announcing the good news via Twitter, Governor Hope Uzodinma wrote;

“In celebration of #FathersDay, I directed that little 9 year old Master Joseph Oluomachi Opara, the viral Imo State-born singer be contacted as I announce my intentions to adopt him as my own child.

I also undertake, personally, to sponsor him from primary school level (his current educational level) to Catholic priesthood (his career choice).”
