#JusticeForSylvester: I Will Sue Falana And Oromoni Family For Damages – Kemi Olunloyo by dimexy247(m) : 10:19 pm On Dec 19

Controversial investigative journalist, Kemi Olunloyo has threatened to sue a human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, and the family of late Sylvester Oromoni for damaging her professional reputation, IgbereTV reports.

It could be recalled that Falana recently filed a petition against Ms Olunloyo over the statements she made concerning the death of Sylvester Oromoni, a 12-year-old boy who was reportedly beaten to death by some students at Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos.

Sylvester was alleged to have been bullied, beaten, and fed with a chemical by five students over his refusal to join their cult group, which resulted in his death.

The deceased’s father had also narrated how his son was bullied by the suspected cultists and asked to describe his sister’s private part, adding that the boy suffered liver enlargement due to congealed blood before his death.

Taking to Twitter, Kemi Olunloyo claimed that Sylvester was willing to join the cult group in his school Dowen college.

Olunloyo also claimed that the boy willingly told the guys initiating him that he has seen his sister’s privates, adding that he consented to be beaten and he agreed to drink engine oil which eventually resulted in his death.

Falana, who is representing the Oromoni family sent a petition to the Nigerian police and other security agencies, calling for an investigation to be conducted regarding Olunloyo’s claim that Sylvester was a cult member among others.

Reacting in a statement personally issued by Olunloyo, the journalist said she will be suing Falana and the Oromoni family for dragging her professional reputation by asking police to invite her over the “reckless statement” she made concerning Sylvester.

Olunloyo, who also accused Falana of trying to use ‘scare tactics’ on her, advised the Oromoni family to fire him, stressing that the human rights lawyer was simply a distraction.

Her statement on Facebook reads,

“STATEMENT BY DR KEMI OLUNLOYO
8:45pm
Lagos Nigeria
December 16th 2021

Femi Falana is an overrated SAN who feels he’s above the law. He carries a dangerous ego which he feels he can use to intimidate the government and protect the people.

I’m planning to sue him for dragging my professional reputation asking police to invite me for specifically my “reckless statement” concerning Sylvester Oromoni a fake petition we are yet to see. Reckless what? He wants to use scare tactics he uses with successive governments. If in fact he’s filing on behalf of the Oromoni family I will be suing them too for damages.

The Oromoni family should fire him and use their senses. Falana is a distraction and one who loves media trials. He is not focused and doesn’t care about civil, legal and human rights of anyone just acts like he does. No family of a dead schoolboy should drag an investigative journalist. The era of those who spoil my name in this country Nigeria will end soon. I know my legal rights. I have information that could make or break this case designed to ruin the reputation of so many others. Nigerians have their mob mentality. Falana investigate the children police have in custody. One of them is holding a document that Sylvester consented to and his family are well aware.

The Oromoni family should undergo a LIE DETECTOR TEST as well as the staff in custody. They have a lot of info the dying child shared with them they did not post on social media. I’m an award winning investigative journalist of 27 years not an Internet blogger and social media personality in this capacity. Any journalist can open any case at anytime. We are journalists, we know our mission. We will NOT be intimidated and that applies to you Mr Falana, all the nonentity celebrities and their fans sending me violent threats.

The lies in Nigeria is way too much. Nobody can suppress the truth and the truth is Kemi Olunloyo. Merry Christmas to all.

The new queen Nigeria won N10m, a 1-year residency at a luxury apartment, a brand new car, and other mouth-watering brand ambassadorship opportunities.

According to the organisers, the pageant showcases the positive attributes of Nigerian women every year. This year’s edition is the 44th.

“Thousands of applications (were)received. The number was pruned down to the top 37 and an additional 3 wildcard semi-finalists.

“The general public then got a chance to contribute to the process of choosing the 21 finalists who made it into the Miss Nigeria Bootcamp, which has now been further cut down to the top 18 finalists who will be going into the finale,” said Chioma Nwigwe, Manager of the Miss Nigeria organisation

During her speech, the new queen said she is passionate about proving that religion and culture are not barriers to following one’s dreams and achieving whatever a person sets out to achieve.

But the eviction process began with over 1,000 ladies and was reduced to 120, who were later invited for a physical audition in Lagos then reduced to 37, including three wild cards. Contestants were further cut down to 21 and later down to 18.

Speaking at the event, the founder of Folio Media Group, Fidelis Anosike, the organiser of Miss Nigeria 2021, said the vision was to create national empowerment and a role model that would serve as an inspiration for the girl child.

Miss Nigeria’s Creative Director, former Miss Nigeria (2013), Ezinne Akudo, also revealed that this year’s selection was quite demanding, due to the sheer volume of entries.

UN Agency Calls For ‘Urgent Access’ To Myanmar Refugees by dimexy247(m) : 2:03 pm On Dec 21

The UN’s refugee agency on Monday called for Thailand to allow them “urgent access” to more than 3,000 Myanmar refugees who fled to the kingdom to escape fighting in conflict-wracked Karen state, IgbereTV reports.

Clashes between Myanmar’s military and the Karen National Union — a rebel group vocally opposed to a junta which deposed a civilian government in February — broke out last week in a town not far from the Thai border.

Some 700 refugees crossed the river into Thailand’s Tak province on Thursday, fleeing artillery shelling and small arms fire. By Monday, the number had ballooned to 3,900 due to continued fighting, the UNHCR said.

“UNHCR is concerned for the welfare of these civilians and has approached the Thai authorities with offers of assistance,” it said in a statement.

“UNHCR and NGOs have requested urgent access to the refugees to ascertain and deliver to them the necessary humanitarian and protection assistance.”

Provincial authorities said late Monday about 3,500 refugees remain in two locations on the Thai side, as dozens have gradually returned since fighting appeared to have ceased.

“Thai authorities are providing humanitarian assistance and transportation for those who volunteer to return to Myanmar by transporting them from the banks of Moei River,” said a statement released by Tak province.

But Naw K’Nyay Paw, general secretary of Karen Women’s Organisation, said the majority of people are still afraid.

“It’s very tense and the fighting is still continuing in some areas,” she told AFP. “I don’t think it is representing the true feelings of the refugees.”

The latest wave of some 1,500 people on Sunday came after renewed fighting broke out in Mae Htaw Thalay, a town bordering Thailand where displaced people were sheltering.

Was Léa Seydoux’s Full Frontal in ‘The French Dispatch’ Necessary to Further the Plot? by dimexy247(m) : 8:52 pm On Dec 21

Was Léa Seydoux’s Full Frontal in ‘The French Dispatch’ Necessary to Further the Plot?

Lea Seydoux has said that she had no idea she’d have to appear naked in Wes Anderson’s upcoming film The French Dispatch until the director showed her an animation of the scene.

Lea portrays a prison officer who serves as a live model for Benicio del Toro’s aggressive convict and artist, which forced her to pose naked in a number of challenging postures.

The film is named after the fictional Kansas Evening Sun supplement of the Liberty, and it is separated into three stories recounted by journalists for the magazine, which is highly influenced by the New Yorker.

Was Léa Seydoux’s Full Frontal in ‘The French Dispatch’ Necessary to Further the Plot?

She explained to the PA news agency that she was unaware of nudity when she first agreed to take on the role, saying: “I saw him in Paris. I’m thinking of you. There’s this little part, so do you want it? And I said, of course, Wes, I’ll do anything for you. Then he sent me only lines and lines, and it was difficult to understand the character accurately.

“So then, after I went to the town where we shot the film, I started to understand what he had in mind. Wes had used an animated sequence to show Lea what she’d need to accomplish because they were both ‘shy’ about it.

She further stated: “He’s very shy and I’m also very shy, so I understood little by little. I saw that movie because he’s making these little animated films, and it’s so funny. He makes all the voices.

Was Léa Seydoux’s Full Frontal in ‘The French Dispatch’ Necessary to Further the Plot?

“So he played Simone, and he did it very well, I have to say, so basically watching an animated movie and that’s what I should do It’s a really understood method.

“It’s so funny because when he sent me the lines, I had, like, five lines. And I was like, ‘Ok, that’s the part, five lines?’

[ads id="ads2"]

‘But it’s true that she says a lot without speaking. And this is also what I like about Wes, is that you can express a lot with your body language, and it gives a very funny comic dimension. I really loved that first section, it’s beautiful and very poetic.’”

The French Dispatch is now playing in UK theaters.

Strike: We Don’t Have Resources to Meet Your Demands Once - FG to ASUU by dimexy247(m) : 8:54 pm On Dec 21

Nwajiuba

The Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba

The federal government has said it doesn't have the resources to meet the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities at once.

FG said this through the Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba.

Countering claims of the union that the Federal Government is blackmailing them, the Minister told Punch that it can't be blackmail when they've tried explaining to them that they will fulfil the agreements signed when the resources are available,

Nwajiuba said:

“We cannot possibly be blackmailing them; we tried to explain to them that we will fulfil the agreements when we have the resources. Agreements have been signed and they are meant to be fulfilled.

“But we do not have all the resources to meet all the demands at once. The thing is that we all are working together – ASUU and the Federal Government. The goal is to produce graduates, who will serve Nigeria, and to make sure that the academic calendar is running smoothly.

“So, the government will always pay its dues; you do not have to go on strike to drive home your points. They need to know that it is not the government versus ASUU. It is about doing what is right. Let us use the resources as they come. There are lots of sectors that need attention.

“All we are saying is that once there are resources, we will meet your needs; all you have to do is to keep the academic calendar running. So, please, where is the blackmail?”

Jemimah Marcus: 17-year-old girls becomes Lagos governor, presides over executive meeting by dimexy247(m) : 8:59 pm On Dec 21

A 17-year-old student Jemimah Marcus has emerged one-day Governor of Lagos State.

Marcus, a student of Angus Memorial Secondary School in Somolu, Lagos East, won the 2020 edition of the Spelling Bee Competition, thereby earning the honour to become the one-day governor.

Master Sotin Ajose of Topo Senior Grammar School emerged first runner up of the Spelling Bee competition while Miss Rhema Edeh of Denton Junior Grammar School was the second runner-up.

This was contained in a statement signed on Monday by the Chief Press Secretary, Gboyega Akosile, on Monday.

He added that the weekly executive council meeting of the state’s cabinet was presided over by Ms Marcus, an indigene of Edo State, as Sanwo-Olu temporarily stepped aside and observed the proceedings.

“Spelling Bee competition, a contest between public schools across Lagos, is one of the legacy programmes in the State’s education sector pioneered in 2001 by the then First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu through her New Era Foundation.

“Since 2015, the state government has taken full charge of the programme, collaborating with partners and stakeholders to further help realise its objectives,” the statement added.

Ms Marcus while presiding over the cabinet meeting, commended the Sanwo-Olu administration for initiating “laudable” programmes. She described the governor as a “transformational leader.”

“Mr Governor, I commend your team for excellent leadership, as well as proactiveness in critical sectors. In education, the State Government has embarked on revamping schools and delivering new ones to improve access. This effort has been complemented with massive innovative programmes, such as EKO EXCEL, Lagos Learns Together, Read Loud, EKO Digital School, and job initiatives.

“These laudable programmes have impacted on students, teachers and the out-of-school learners, as the initiatives have improved teaching and learning with an excellent outcome. With the deployment of technology, I can say teaching techniques across Lagos schools are no longer what they used to be. The success of these programmes is evident in the performance of students in their academics,” she said.

Ms Marcus, however, solicited more funding for her school, and schools where students learn under harsh circumstances, while also asking the governor to support her parents in order to help her realise her future dreams.

The one-day governor harped on the need to commit more investment in digital literacy across public schools in the State.

Responding, Sanwo-Olu said the one-day governorship programme was one of the ways employed by the state to raise future leaders, noting that the initiative had afforded winners the opportunity not only to improve in their learning but also expose them rudiments of public administration.

The governor took note of Ms Marcus’ requests for more investment in education and human capital, promising the government would continue to prioritise education in the state.

‘Repentant terrorists don’t exist, stop rehabilitating them,’ El-Rufai begs Buhari by dimexy247(m) : 10:32 pm On Dec 22

Kaduna governor Nasir el-Rufai says he does not believe in rehabilitating terrorists.

He said the best way to deal with the persons terrorising Nigerians is to kill them.

The governor made his position known on Tuesday while briefing state house correspondents after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari.

He was in the state house to brief the president on the recent attack which led to the death of 40 persons in Kaduna state.

The governor was accompanied by Samuel Aruwan, Kaduna commissioner for internal security and home affairs.

He said: “There is nothing like repentant terrorists. The only repentant bandit is the one that is dead. Our intention in the state is to kill them (terrorists), let them go and see God.”

El-Rufai said the whereabouts of the bandits are not hidden but that the military is wary of the collateral damage it could cause the civilian community.

The governor said there are three types of terrorists; the Boko Haram insurgents, the bandits, and members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

He said the recent declaration of bandits as terrorists has given the military more power to wage war against them.

El-Rufai asked for the intervention of the president for more deployment of security forces to enable a comprehensive operation.

He called on the security agencies to carry out aggressive operations against the terrorists.

BREAKING!!! Electoral Act: Senate makes a U-turn, Fails To Override President’s veto by dimexy247(m) : 1:22 am On Dec 23

Despite earlier threat, the Senate on Wednesday failed to override the President’s veto on the 2010 Electoral Act (amendments) Bill 2021. The red chamber made the u-turn when members emerged from a 40-minute closed session, Igbere TV reports.

The President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan, explained after the executive session that the upper chamber had decided to consult with members of the House of Representatives on the matter.

He said since the House had gone on recess and the constitution prescribes that both chambers should take a joint decision on the matter, it would be proper for them to wait till January before any action could be taken.

Lawan also said the Senate in the closed session agreed that members should consult with their constituencies who are critical stakeholders in the electoral process.

The Senate had on Tuesday, adjourned plenary till today (Wednesday), to enable them to override the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on the 2010 Electoral Act (amendments) Bill 2021.

An investigation by our correspondent had revealed that the federal lawmakers agreed to vote on the matter on resumption of plenary today.

The senators who spoke off and on the record said they were not satisfied with the conditions given by the President to withhold assent to the Electoral Bill.

Buhari’s position was conveyed in a letter addressed to the Senate President which was read during the start of the plenary after the chamber came out from its first closed session.

The closed session which lasted for 37 minutes started at exactly 10:44 am and ended at 11:21 am.

President Buhari in the letter dated December 13, 2021, explained that his decision to withhold assent to the electoral bill was informed by advice from relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies of Government after a thorough review.

According to the President, signing the bill into law would have serious adverse legal, financial, economic and security consequences on the country, particularly in view of Nigeria’s peculiarities.

He added that it would also impact negatively on the rights of citizens to participate in the government as constitutionally ensured.

The Senate later dissolved into a closed session at 1:57 pm on Tuesday to discuss the reasons given by the President, for declining assent to the 2010 Electoral Act (amendments) Bill 2021.

The Senator representing Rivers East, George Sekibo, raised a point of order asking the Senate to go to a closed session to discuss the issue.

The Senate President sustained Sekibo’s point of order and the closed session commenced by 1.57 pm.

The Federal Government has declared Monday 27th, Tuesday 28th December 2021 and Monday, 3rd January 2022 as public holidays to mark Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day celebrations respectively.

Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, who made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, felicitates with Christians and all Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora on this year’s Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Ogbeni Aregbesola enjoins Christians to practice the doctrines of Christ, which include but not limited to these – faith, hope and love.

“We must emulate the life of Jesus Christ in His practice and teachings on Humility, Service, Compassion, Patience, Peace and Righteousness, that His birth signifies.
This will be the best way to portray Christ and celebrate his birth”, he noted.

He emphasizes that peace and security are two critical conditions for economic development and prosperity. He urges Christians and Nigerians to make the best use of this festive period to pray for the total eradication of insecurity bedevilling our dear nation.

Aregbesola strongly charges Nigerians not to be lulled into a false sense of security on COVID-19 pandemic but to note that it is increasingly assuming a very dangerous and harmful dimension with the emergence of a virulent variant, Omicron.

“This calls for deliberate responsibility and discipline on the part of all”, the Minister stresses.

The Minister enjoins all to adhere strictly to and observe all the stipulated non-pharmaceutical protocols and guidelines such as wearing of facemasks, frequent washing of hands with soap and water, using of hand sanitizer and avoidance of large groups. Also, he urges quick report to medical authorities of any respiratory illness observed in self and others before, during and after the Yuletide.

Speaking further, the Minister said this Yuletide calls for spartan discipline in order to prevent the spread of the virus in our community and the nation as a whole. Aregbesola says “Moderately celebrate the festival without large groupings and observe all the protocols stipulated by medical authorities. Take it as a point of personal responsibility to prevent the spread of the virus”.

The Minister also assures that the Government has put in place effective measures for the security of lives and property and expects Nigerians to support the efforts of security agencies by providing useful information that will assist them in the performance of their duties.

Aregbesola admonishes all citizens to remain focused and expresses confidence that the year 2022 would be a better year for us all. He wishes all Christians in particular a happy Christmas and all Nigerians a peaceful and prosperous New Year celebration.

Dubai king ordered to pay estranged wife $734m in royal divorce case

A London judge has ordered Dubai king, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to pay his estranged wife Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein at least 554 million pounds ($734 million) -the UK's biggest ever divorce settlement.

The settlement concludes a long-running case that has played out in UK courts between Princess Haya Bint al-Hussein, 47, daughter of the late King Hussein of Jordan, and her ex-husband, multibillionaire Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum.

During the trial, the court heard details of the immense luxury in which the princess lived before she fled Dubai with her two children, Zayed, 9, and Jalila, 14.

The court also heard Mohammed’s abusive behavior toward his wife and children, which prompted Haya to file for divorce and flee to Britain in 2019, saying that she feared for their lives.

The judge agreed that she faced risks and awarded the bulk of the settlement toward providing a lifetime of security for the princess and her children, including armored cars, cyber-protection, cameras and ballistic safeguards and bodyguards.Latest Post
