Residents flee community as rival cultists beheaded five in Rivers by Stooi76(m) : 6:16 pm On Feb 18

No fewer than five persons were feared dead during a battle for supremacy that ensued between rival cult groups in Egbeda community, Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State.

A source in the community said that the Icelanders cult and the Greenlanders cult groups were locked in war over who takes charge of the community.

The source, who described how the cultists went on rampage, killing and beheading their victims, said that about five people were killed.

He said that the head of one of their victims was pinned on a stick at the community’s market square.

“Several people have been killed now in the community. I saw about five people. The boys are killing and cutting off people’s heads. There is fear in the community, so people are moving out,” the source said.

A resident of the area, simply identified as Uche, said he was going to stay with his relatives in Port Harcourt.

Uche said the shooting started on Wednesday night, adding that the rival cultists moved freely in the community, in the absence of security operatives.

He also said that residents who had fled their homes were wondering “aimlessly” in neighbouring communities, calling on the government for swift intervention.

Uche said, “There is panic in the community. I don’t know the actual number of people killed, but they have killed more than five people since the incident started.

“We are calling on the government and security operatives to intervene. Our people are suffering; right now, they are in other communities.”

It was learnt that most senior officers of the Rivers State Police Command had gone out of the state due to the burial of the late Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Francis Odesanya.

The spokesperson for the Command, Mr. Nnamdi Omoni, said he would comment on the situation on Saturday (today).

My salary as lecturer was more than RCCG’s income — Adeboye by Stooi76(m) : 6:27 pm On Feb 20

GENERAL Overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, who presides over a global church with members in about 198 nations of the world, at the weekend, described his early years as the General Overseer of the mission as turbulent, saying the church’s total income then was about half of his salary as university lecturer.

Ministering during a three-day special programme to end the church’s 40-day fasting and prayer period at the Redemption Camp, Kilometre 46, Lagos Ibadan Expressway, Pastor Adeboye shocked the worshippers when he declared that the church’s total income when he took over its leadership was less than his pay.His words: “When God called me into full time ministry, I must tell you the truth, I was afraid because things were rough. I knew poverty when I was young but I became a university teacher with the belief that my days of poverty were gone.

“When God asked me to leave my job to become a full-time pastor, the total income of the church was less than my salary and we were to share it among some 39 people.

‘’I was really afraid but God gave me one promise. He said do not worry my son, I will be with you. If you are wondering why my case is different, it is because God told me that He will be with me and He has been faithful to His promise.”

He also narrated some unpalatable experiences he had in repositioning the church.

All parishes of mission, yesterday celebrated the end of the 40-day fasting and prayer which commenced on Wednesday, January 11, 2017.

Maiduguri—Following recent attacks by remnants of the Boko Haram insurgents in parts of Borno State, Governor Kashim Shettima, weekend, held an emergency security meeting with heads of the Nigerian Army, Air Force, Police and the Department of State Services, DSS, aimed at stepping up measures on increased surveillance to forestall further security breach.

Before the meeting with security chiefs, Governor Shettima had earlier held a three three-hour closed-door meeting with the Theater Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, Major General Leo Irabor at the Governor’s Office, Maiduguri.

During the meeting, the governor was briefed over recent attacks and ongoing military operations while discussions were held with assurances that the remnants of the insurgents were on suicidal mission given their displacement from their former Sambisa forest headquarters.

Special Adviser on Communications and Strategy to Governor Shettima, Malam Isa Gusau, said in a statement yesterday, that after meeting with the Theater Commander, who is not a member of the State Security Council, Shettima presided over an emergency meeting of the state Security Council that involved core armed forces.

Held at the council chambers of the Government House, the meeting had in attendance the General Officer Commanding, 7 Division of the Army, Brigadier General Victor Ezugwu; the Commander, 79 Composite group of the Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Charles Oho; the Borno State Commissioner of Police, Damian Chukwu; the Garrison Commander, 7 Division of the Army, Brigadier General Jibrin Mohammed; the State Director of the DSS, Suleiman Kankia; Commandant of the Nigerian Civil Defense Corps, Ibrahim Abdullahi; the Secretary to the State Government, Usman Jidda Shuwa, the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Kaka Shehu Lawan and the Permanent Secretary in charge of security.

The governor also approved logistics to compliment efforts of the Federal Government in strengthening armed forces while measures were adopted to strengthen the Civilian JTF and hunters.

The meeting also reviewed synergy between armed forces and volunteers with steps adopted to increase collaboration and clamp down on cattle rustling used by insurgents to raise funds. The council deliberated on recent false information spread by mischief makers to cause disaffection between armed forces and volunteers particularly the Civilian JTF with the council warning mischief makers against destabilizing the emerging peace across the State.

Telecoms To Block Skype, Whatsapp Calls, To Boost Revenue by Stooi76(m) : 10:15 pm On Feb 20

As the economic crisis continued to weigh on businesses, telecommunication firms are planning to adopt drastic measures to boost revenue.

Telecoms companies in the country are planning to curb losses from international calls and meet a revenue target of N20 trillion by blocking subscribers from using Skype and other internet call services, called Over-the-Top, the Punch reported on Sunday.

According to the report, subscribers might also be prevented from voice and video calls on Facebook and Whatsapp, among other OTT services.

A manager at one of the major telecommunication companies in the country, who preferred not to be named said, “It is an aggressive approach to stop further revenue loss to OTT players on international calls, having already lost about N100tn between 2012 and 2017.”

The manager added that “If we fail to be pro-active by taking cogent steps now, then there are indications that we may lose between N20tn and N30tn, or so, by the end of 2018.”

This further support Ovum report, a United Kingdom-based research and analytics company that about $386 billion would be lost over a period of six years, between 2012 and 2018, from Nigerian customers using the OTT voice applications.

“Generally, the main fear of the telecoms operators here will be that customers will increasingly use Skype as a substitute for conventional international calls,” said Mattew Reed, the Principal Analyst at Informa Telecoms and Media.

Whereas telecoms operators in the country have said international calls made up the bulk of their revenue due to Nigeria’s large diaspora population, but that the Nigerian Communications Commission is not doing enough to regulate the sector and keep them in business.

However, the Director, Public Affairs, NCC, Mr. Tony Ojobo, said, “We don’t have any evidence that we do not regulate the Internet.”

Andrew Yakubu Asks Court To Return Seized Looted $9.7m,£74,000 To Him by Stooi76(m) : 10:19 pm On Feb 20

The former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Andrew Yakubu has filed an appeal at the Federal High Court, Kano demanding the refund of the $9.7m and £74,000 seized from him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and which the court that sat in Kano had ruled that it be forfeited to the Federal Government.

In the appeal filed by his counsel, Mr. Ahmed Raji (SAN), Yakubu challenged the ruling of the Federal High Court presided over by Justice Zainab B. Abubakar, saying the court lacked the territorial jurisdiction to try the case since the crime was allegedly committed in Abuja, which is outside the territorial jurisdiction of the Kano court.

In a motion on notice with suit number FHC/ICN/CS/24/2017, Yakubu’s counsel, Raji argued that “by Section 45 of the Federal High Court Act, an offence shall be tried only by a court exercising jurisdiction in the area or place where the offence was committed. No aspect of the perceived offence in respect of which the Order of 13th February, 2017 was made, was committed within the Kano judicial division of this Honourable Court,” Raji said.

He said, “By Section 28 of the EFCC Act, only the commission, i.e. the EFCC has the vires to seek an Order for the interim forfeiture of property under the Act.

“The power of this Honourable Court to make interim forfeiture Order(s) pursuant to Sections 28 & 29 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Act, 2004 (hereinafter “EFCC Act”) is applicable ONLY to alleged offences charged under the EFCC Act and not to offences cognizable under any other law.

The ex-parte Order of this Honourable Court dated 13th February, 2017, was made in respect of alleged offences under the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission Act (hereinafter “ICPC Act”) and not the EFCC Act as prescribed by Section 28 & 29 thereof.

“The conditions precedent to the grant of an interim forfeiture Order under Sections 28 & 29 of the EFCC Act were not complied with by the Applicant before the Order was made. “In the instant case, no charge was brought against the Respondent/Applicant before the provisions of Section 28 and 29 of the EFCC Act were activated to grant the ex-parte Order of 13th February, 2017.”

Recall that the Federal High Court which sat in Kano on the 13th February, 2017 and presided over by Justice Zainab B. Abubakar, had ordered the forfeiture of the sum of $9,772,000 (Nine Million, Seven Hundred and Seventy Two Thousand United States Dollars) and £74,000 (Seventy Four Thousand Pound Sterling) recovered from Mr. Andrew Yakubu to the Federal Government.

In a press release signed by Wilson Uwujaren, EFCC Head Media & Publicity, the order was sequel to an ex parte application by the EFCC seeking an interim forfeiture of the recovered money to the Federal Government. The ex parte application was moved by Salihu Sani, counsel for the applicant.

In her ruling, Justice Zainab had held “That the sum of $9,772,000 (Nine Million, Seven Hundred and Seventy Two Thousand United States Dollars) and £74,000 (Seventy Four Thousand Pound Sterling) which are now in the custody of the applicant (EFCC) are in the interim forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

It would also be recalled that, on the 3rd day of February, 2017, operatives of the Commission had stormed a building belonging to the former NNPC boss and recovered the staggering sum of $9,772,000 (Nine Million, Seven Hundred and Seventy Two Thousand United States Dollars) and £74,000 (Seventy Four Thousand Pound Sterling) stashed in a huge fire proof safe.

However, Mr. Yakubu has long said the money seized from him were gifts from persons he did not mention. Recall also that on February 8, 2017, Andrew Yakubu had reported to the Commission’s Zonal office in Kano and made statement wherein he admitted ownership of the recovered money, claiming it was gift from unnamed persons. Yakubu was GMD of the NNPC between 2012 and 2014

We Will Tell Buhari To Speak With Nigerians – Presidency by Stooi76(m) : 10:28 pm On Feb 20

THE Presidency has promised to get President Muhammadu Buhari, who is on indefinite vacation in London, to speak to Nigerians to douse welling controversies and disquiet in the country over his health status and well-being.

Presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, who disclosed this in Abuja on the sidelines of an interactive session with Nigerian youths organized by the Citizens Support for Good Governance in Nigeria , yesterday, also dismissed fears of a division in the nation’s seat of power regarding the performance of Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, who has held sway since President Buhari went on medical vacation last January.

President Buhari He also said it was not true that some close appointees of President Buhari had constituted themselves into a cabal with the aim of whittling down the influence of Acting President Osinbajo. Asked why the President’s handlers have not deemed it fit to get him to talk directly to Nigerians through Nigeria’s media, Shehu said the suggestion would be forwarded to the president to see if he would agree. ‘’Okay, if you are making a suggestion, we will put it to him, in case he would agree.

We will put it to him, ‘’he said. On the issue of a cabal in Presidency, Garba said: ‘’This country has one government. When Nigerians voted, they voted for Buhari/Osinbajo on one ticket. Nobody can divide that ticket, so if Prof. Osinbajo achieves a milestone, it is a milestone by the Buhari administration. It is one government, no division in this government.’’ He also added that Nigerians have to be grateful to the President, whose emergence, he said, halted the menacing advance of the Boko Haram terrorists, who by now, according to him, might have overran the Presidential Villa in Aso Rock. ‘’He (Buhari) wants a future that is secure and stable for young generations that are coming, that is yourselves. This is why in his messages, he has stayed on three key issues; he has repeated this over and over again.

‘’He says this country cannot make any progress without security. And look at all the efforts that has been put in rolling back Boko Haram. There are many people who believe that if not for President Buhari, if the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, had continued in this country in 2015, Boko Haram would have taken over Aso Rock by now,’’ he said. Hold Buhari responsible for APC campaign promises Also speaking, a member of the Board of Trustees, BoT, of ruling All Progressive Congress, APC, Barr. Ismaila Ahmed, urged the party to be open to criticisms and asked Nigerians to hold the President and other leaders of the party accountable for their campaign promises.

Ahmed said while the APC had tried in delivering on some of its mandate, there was no disputing the fact that some Nigerians were not satisfied with the status quo, and advised the party not to shut out critics. He said: ‘’As a government, we have to be open to criticisms. Some people are not happy, people have to express their frustration, people have to express their anger, we cannot and we should not have a problem with that. ‘’We campaigned all through because I headed the youth wing during the campaigns; I knew from day one that it was not going to be an easy task, even the President knew it won’t be an easy task. ‘’So the responsibility is not for us to start promising anymore because we are two years into the administration. ‘’This administration has to be convinced by its own performances and not its own promises anymore.

We have made promises during the campaigns, now we have to act on those promises and that is what the President will continue to do and our responsibility, as members of this party is to tell Mr President you can choose who you can work with, but we will make sure that we can hold you and those you appoint to account. ‘’We have so many things we have done right and we also have so many things we have done wrong, there is no doubt about that.

Re: We Never Killed Any IPOB Member In Port Harcourt – Army by Stooi76(m) : 10:35 pm On Feb 20

The Nigerian army has denied killing any protester belonging to the Indigenous People Of Biafra at their recent rally in Port Harcourt, rather accusing the group of making spurious and unfounded allegation, and molesting innocent citizens and passersby.

The Deputy Director, Army Public Relations sixth division, Colonel ‎Aminu Iliyasu, ‎yesterday ‎stated that on the said date, members of the group were mobilized from Abia, Anambra, Enugu, Imo and Cross River states for an alleged rally with dubious intent of molesting innocent citizens, intimidating passers-by and wrecking havoc on commuters thereby disturbing public peace, safety and security.

He explained that the choice of Port Harcourt as the epicentre of the protest has left much to be desired. According to him, it is however worthy to restate that one of the constitutional responsibilities of the Nigerian Army is to come to the aid of the civil authority whenever the need arises.
And in line with this constitutional mandate, troops of 29 Battalion Nigerian Army, were deployed in conjunction with other security agencies to prevent any loss of life or property with strict adherence to the established rules of engagement.

“Despite all provocative attempts occasioned by the stoning of security agents and the smashing of commuters’ windscreens by the violent protesters, troops refused to be cajoled into the criminal gang’s trap to fire a single shot. This is indicative of the troops’ total compliance with their rules of engagement. The violent protest was subsequently subdued with the use of tear gas and arrests were made by a sister security agency with no casualty recorded on either side.”
The army spokesperson said.

He decried as worrisome and disturbing for anyone to falsely accuse troops deployed in support of civil authority who conducted their duty professionally under the beaming lenses of cameras of allegedly killing 11 citizens of the country. A well observed trend of IPOB, according to him, is the malicious posting of old videos and pictures from their archives on social media platforms that has no bearing on their claims, to attract public sympathy and whip sentiments among the citizenry.

Despite the army’s claim of civility in their conduct under the beaming lenses of cameras, it never provided any video to substantiate that. And the photos and videos captured by the beaming lenses of the other side in the argument rather showed the army conducting their duty unprofessionally by forcing everyone to understand that they are the guys with the guns.

Nigeria has no record of oil, non-oil export activities since June 2015 by Stooi76(m) : 5:02 pm On Feb 21

THE Senate was yesterday told that Nigeria has since June 2015, been exporting oil and non-oil products without documentation.

This was just as it heard that the development has made the country lost over N23.6 billion expected repatriated proceeds of the export within the period.

Similarly, the Senate alleged discovery of over $850 billion supposedly earned by the country between 1996 and 2014 from its crude oil export proceeds but yet to be repatriated to the country by the Joint Venture Oil Companies, a development it noted, was in total contravention of Nigeria’s Pre-shipment Inspection of Export Act and Article 26 of Export Policy Guidelines and procedures for crude oil, Gas and non-oil goods.

The revelations were made, yesterday, during an investigative public hearing organized by a Joint Committee of the Senate Committees on Finance, Trade and Investment, Gas, Petroleum Upstream, Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions, Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, and Customs, Excise and Tariff on the “Need to Investigate Pre Shipment Inspection of Export Activities in Nigeria.

The public hearing was prompted by a motion moved on the floor of the Senate by Senator Abubakar Yusuf in July, 2016, where he alleged that there had been gross violation of the Pre-shipment Inspection of Export Act by certain institutions of government.

A deputy director in the Federal Ministry of Trade and Investment, Usman Ndanusa, who represented the ministry at the investigative public hearing, disclosed that the country had since June 2015, been exporting its oil and non-oil products without measurement and documentation.

He said the development followed the disengagement of pre-shipment inspection agents at the various export terminals in the country and their subsequent replacement with agents who were merely asked by the federal government without legal and constitutional backing to carry out the pre-shipment work at the terminals.

Kidnapping: Farmers storm Ambode’s office, protest incessant abduction in Epe by Stooi76(m) : 5:15 pm On Feb 21

Some residents of Epe have called on Lagos State Government to seek the intervention of the presidency for the deployment of officers of the Joint Taskforce (JTF) to curtail kidnapping in the area.

The residents, many of them farmers and community leaders, on Monday staged peaceful protest at the Governor’s Office in Alausa, Ikeja, demanding the assistance of the state government.

They specifically requested the deployment of JTF in Igbodu/Isiwo axis of Epe.

They carried placards with various inscriptions such as: “Help us from kidnappers.” “Save farmers, save the nation,” “Please, flush out the creeks,” “Food security is threatened’, “Save our Investments.”spokesperson of the protesters, Mr Ayokunle Ore, said that their farms had been under attacks by kidnappers since September, 2016.

He said that 33 persons had been kidnapped from different farms and 26 of the victims released after payment of huge ransom.

He added that seven other victims were still under the captivity of the kidnappers.

Ore said that the engagement of the police, the military, members of Odua Peoples’ Congress (OPC) and local vigilante groups, to flush out the kidnappers had not yielded positive result.

He stressed the need for the government to handle the high rate of kidnapping in the area as a matter of urgency to secure their investments, lives and property.

“In our desire to contribute our quota to national food security and sufficiency, we invested our lifetime savings and borrowings from banks to establish farms in the agricultural belt created by the state government.

“Some of us even relocated from abroad to come and invest in farming to respond to government call for diversification of the economy.

“We urge Governor Ambode to intervene urgently and come to our rescue by seeking the support of JTF in the area to destroy the camps of the kidnappers.

“The government should extend the mandate of the JTF currently in Ikorodu and Festac to Igbodu/Isiwo axis and adjourning creeks,” Ore said.

Dep gov says govt poised to tackle vices

Addressing the protesters, Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule condemned the incessant attacks by kidnappers in the area.

She said that inspite of government’s efforts to make the state safe and secure for the residents and investors, some unscrupulous persons still engage in crime and make life difficult for people.

Adebule said: “Security issues are sensitive issues and the government is not resting on its oars.

“We are doing all we can to restore peace in the area.

“Currently, the state government is speaking with the Federal Government to see how they can work with us to combat the problems of insecurity because we cannot do it alone.

“Government cannot be involved in paying ransom, but will ensure that it provide the security agencies with necessary equipment and support to contain the situation and rescue the victims.

“We sympathise with you and we beg for your understanding.

“I will relay your complaints to Gov, Ambode for further and appropriate action on the matter.

Driver gets 7-year jail term for raping 80-year-old woman by Stooi76(m) : 5:17 pm On Feb 21

A 45-year-old commercial driver, Lawrence Adedapo, was yesterday sentenced to seven years imprisonment by an Ado-Ekiti high court for raping an 80-year-old woman, Madam Grace Asaolu.

Justice Dele Omotoso, who hinged his judgment on the evidence before the court, which showed that the driver raped the old woman and was guilty as charged.

The convict sexually assaulted the octogenarian on November 7, 2013 at Oke Erimope Street, Ogbese, Ise-Ekiti, and was subsequently charged to court.

Adedapo, who pleaded not guilty to the charge, described the old woman as his “mother as well as his concubine,” whom he has been dating as far back as his bachelor years and claimed that Mrs. Asaolu framed him up.

He claimed that the old woman had earlier approached him for a sum of money to travel to her village. The driver claimed that the old woman started caressing him, which eventually led to love-making, after which he had given her N1,000.

The prosecution, led by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Owoseni Ajayi, gave evidence that the convict confessed to have been dating the woman before the incident and that she consen-ted to the sexual intercourse.

Ajayi tendered the blood-stained clothes of the victim, which was recovered from the scene of the incident.

The trial judge resolved all issues for determination against Adedapo and consequently sentenced him to a jail term of seven years for unlawful carnal knowledge of the old woman.

Black soot: 6 million Rivers residents risk cancer – Specialists by Stooi76(m) : 5:22 pm On Feb 21

ABOUT six million residents of Rivers State face the risk of developing cancer of the lung and other respiratory problems, following the never-ending raining of cancerous hydrocarbon elements, commonly referred to as black soot on their environment.

Dr. Furo Green, a specialist and consultant surgeon at the Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital, Port Harcourt, who raised the alarm in an interview with NDV, decried the impact of the black soot, saying that six million Rivers people were at the risk of cancer over the hydrocarbon.

Magnitude of hydrocarbon

Similarly, a consultant surgeon and the deputy chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, Special Projects and Linkages University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Dr. Ochele Emmanuel, confirmed that the hydrocarbons were capable of causing cancer. However, the Rivers State Government, according to our findings, had shut down three companies in the state for allegedly operating machines that emit high magnitude of hydrocarbon into the atmosphere. One of the residents, who spoke to our reporter, Mrs. Chika Chibuike, asserted: “I am aware of the black soot, before you wake in the morning, you will see black stains in your room. If you use a white cloth to clean the chairs or the television, it will be as if you cleaned charcoal. The thing is happening every day. When you clean your nose, you will also notice that youR nose is black. I heard that it can cause cancer but God is protecting me and my family. Although I am afraid of that, so I try as much to cover our food and close the windows.”

FG should monitor multinational companies: Dr. Green asserted that currently in the state, many people were at the risk of developing cancer of the lung and other respiratory problems following prolong exposure to the black soot caused by hydrocarbon, urging the federal government to monitor the activities of multinational companies that are into hydrocarbon processing.

Green said: “We all suddenly noticed an increase in discharge of black powdery matter in the environment, which the Ministry of Environment has narrowed to hydrocarbon. The implication of inhaling these hydrocarbon particles is that it can lead to acute inflammation of the airways, which can precipitate to hyper stimulation of the airway and actually precipitate asthmatic attack in individuals, who are predisposed to asthma.

“And over a long period of time it can precipitate chronic obstruction of the airways, which we refer to as chronic bronchitis. So when this condition goes on for a long time, it results to chronic respiratory conditions that can end up as malignancy or even kill the individual. The figure of people affected by this might even be larger than six million because other neighbouring states are also experiencing the soot, and even recently parts of Lagos State have been reported to also experience it.”

Green stated: “Hydrocarbons after prolong exposure can predispose to cancer, especially of the lung, because that is the area where it is settled, but there are other long lasting conditions that may arise from hydrocarbon poison, such as infertility as demonstrated by Prof. Georgewill of the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, where he was able to demonstrate that fertility is significantly affected by hydrocarbon poisoning.

Hydrocarbon poisoning

“But in children, the effect can be unpredictable, a child that is very normal now could actually develop an acute respiratory problem, meaning that a child, who has never had asthma, can actually precipitate to one, and if care is not taken the child could die from asphyxia. So the effects of these particles are more pronounced in children right now, but over a period of time, it will lead to lung condition.”

Dr. Green advised: “Wash your hands as often as possible because even where you wash your hands, you will see that the lather of the soap itself is black. Children should be protected, close your windows, wash your fruits and cover your food to reduce the loads of these hydrocarbons. Also, clean your floor and furniture with moist towels to reduce the accumulation of the soot; and when you are exposed outside, wear a nose-mask or cover your nose with handkerchief to minimize the volume that is inhaled.”

Instant respiratory problem: The other consultant surgeon, Dr. Emmanuel noted that the immediate effect on people is respiratory problem and called on the government to clamp down on some human activities that introduce hydrocarbon into the atmosphere. This case of black soot has been, we know that whatever you burn, turns into hydrocarbon substances. We also know from the medical literature that the hydrocarbon agents have been implicated for causation of cancers for virtually all parts of the body, cancer of the lungs, cancer of the oesophagus, cancer of the stomach, cancer of the pancreas and cancer of the skin.

So the issue of the soot should not confound anybody, cancer may take long to manifest, but are we going to wait till 15 to 20 years when 10 persons out of 100 develop cancer before we confront the problem headlong? We may not have the resource to face such challenges at that time.”

Dr. Emmanuel counseled: “The government should do everything possible to ensure that our society is clean, they can do that by ensuring that illegal refineries, the petroleum industries, where there is gas flaring and where there is release of effluent into the atmosphere is reduced to the minimum even the automobile and artisans, who burn tires often. We know that it will have a cumulative effect one day. Among them for now, people will begin to develop respiratory problem, skin irritation. The government needs to intervene and the citizens should be educated.”

Govt to prosecute offenders

Meanwhile, the Task Force on Black Soot set by the state government to investigate and resolve the environmental challenge, penultimate Saturday, closed down three companies operating in the state, Chinese Government Company, CGC, HSH Engineering Company and AUC Ashphalt Company for allegedly operating machines that emit high magnitude of hydrocarbon into the atmosphere.

Commissioner of Information and Communications, Dr. Austin Tam-George, said the decision to set up the task force was taken at the State Executive Council meeting based on a preliminary report of its ministerial investigation presented to the council by the Commissioner of Environment, Prof. Roseline Konya.

Dr. Tam- George explained that the three companies operating in Aluu community, Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state, were sealed up for aggravated air pollution and breach of environmental laws.

He noted that directors of the affected companies would face prosecution in accordance with the law and warned all individuals and companies that engage in practices that pollute the air and ruin the environment to desist or face the full weight of the law. The commissioner said that while the state remained open for investment, government was committed to the implementation of the United Nations, UN Declarations on the importance of fresh air and creation of sustainable livelihoods in the communities.

Outraged as Indian - packaged garri sells in Nigeria by Stooi76(m) : 5:30 pm On Feb 21

Nigerians on Monday expressed outrage after it emerged that Indian-packaged garri was being sold in the country.

The garri is packed in a 500g bag, which has the picture of a lady and an inscription, ‘TRS’ (Asia’s Finest Foods) on it, with a price tag of N450.

The Executive Director, Natural Nutrient Limited, Sola Adeniyi, expressed dismay at the development in a post entitled, “Attention: Indian garri being sold in Nigerian supermarkets,” which he shared on WhatsApp.

According to Adeniyi, who is an agribusiness development value chain expert, the sale of the Indian-packaged garri in Nigeria is an absurdity of monumental proportion and a shame.

He said, “Our government and regulatory agencies (if they still exist) should cover their faces in shame. I would like to ask: how much were you paid in bribe? Is this how far we are mentally bankrupt? We are indeed in a big mess in this nation. Can you imagine imported garri from India now selling in shops in Nigeria and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control approved this?

“So, we finally have consigned our dear country to a dumping ground for all forms of Asian mindless madness. Nigeria is the world’s largest producer of cassava for crying out loud, but here we are shamelessly displaying Indian-made garri and not corn flakes on our shelves.

Nigerians also took to the social media space to condemn the act, one of them writing on Nairaland with the user name, smartiyke78, said, “I am ashamed of this country called Nigeria.

“The other day, it was imported packaged jollof rice from India or China. As if that embarrassment was not enough, now this is garri. What a shame to all who call themselves leaders and decision makers. Could this be the result of the incessant unprofitable travels the President was making?

“I just hope Nigeria has not been sold out in the name of some clueless economic partnership.”

Another user, Dauda Abu, wrote, “Nigeria is the largest producer of cassava. How on earth should we be importing garri into our market? We are not encouraging our industry to grow at all.”

Following the outrage, NAFDAC raided the shop located along Cameron Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.

According to the Acting Director-General of NAFDAC, Mrs. Yetunde Oni, the agency’s officers visited the supermarket on Monday and seized 26 packs of the product for analysis.

“The product has no NAFDAC number. It is said to be from Ghana but packaged in the United Kingdom. The management of the supermarket has been invited for further discussion in our Lagos office and investigation continues,” she said in a text message in response to an enquiry by our correspondent.

PDP crisis : Sherrif meets Jonathan, Makarfi appeals judgment by Stooi76(m) : 5:36 pm On Feb 21

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, met with former President Goodluck Jonathan at the ex-President’s residence in Abuja on Monday.

The meeting, which held behind closed doors, was also attended by Sheriff’s Deputy National Chairman, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh; Acting National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Bernard Mikko; and the National Youth Leader, Mr. Demis Alonge-Niyi.

Also at the meeting were the party’s National Secretary, Prof. Wale Oladipo, and the Financial Secretary, Mr. Adewole Adeyanju.

As the meeting was ongoing, the sacked National Caretaker Committee of the party said it had appealed the Court of Appeal judgment which removed it from office.

The committee, which was headed by a former Governor of Kaduna State, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, stated this after the faction’s stakeholders’ meeting.

The meeting was held at the private residence of the Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, who is the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum.

Jonathan, who met Sheriff and his entourage, referred to the former governor of Borno State as his chairman.

As soon as Jonathan was ushered into the sitting room, where his guests were seated, and sighted Sheriff, he stretched his hands to him and said, “My chair.”

Even after their closed-door meeting, which was held with a few members of Sheriff’s entourage, the former President still referred to Sheriff as “my chairman.”

Speaking with journalists after the meeting, Jonathan said the troubled party remained one, adding that there was no faction in it.

Acknowledging that there were problems in the party, the ex-President, however, stated that efforts were being made to resolve them.

Jonathan added, “We are solving our problems. There are bound to be differences in politics. It is the way we resolve these differences that makes us human beings and that is what makes us leaders.

“We are not factionalised; we are one. I have met with Sheriff and I have met with others. I will meet with others (again) so that we will be able to do what is expected of us as a political party.”

In his remarks, Sheriff said he would not respond to the unprintable names he was being called by his traducers, stating that there would be no difference between him and those against him if he decided to respond to them.

“I will not respond to the name-calling because if I do, there would be no difference between them and me. Very soon, you will hear from me when I finish my consultation as I will roll out my programmes that will lead to the holding of a national convention,” he added.

At the PDP Stakeholders’ meeting, however, the Makarfi group passed a vote of confidence in the caretaker committee, insisting that the committee would remain in place until the determination of its appeal at the Supreme Court.

A former Minister of Information, Prof. Jerry Gana, read the communique of the meeting, which was attended by the governors of Akwa Ibom State (Udom Emmanuel); Delta State (Ifeanyi Okowa); Rivers State (Nyesom Wike); and the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu.Members of the National Assembly, former ministers, former governors and members of the Board of Trustees of the party were also in attendance.

Reading the communique, Gana said, “That we fully endorse the prompt and proactive decision of the National Caretaker Committee to lodge an appeal at the Supreme Court of Nigeria against the decision of the Court of Appeal as well as filing an application for injunction pending an appeal, all of which were done in the morning of Monday, February 20, 2017.

“Having duly filed both an appeal at the Supreme Court and an application for injunction pending appeal in the morning of Monday, February 20, 2017, we pass a resounding and unqualified vote of confidence in the leadership of the Senator Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee of the PDP and pledge our unalloyed support to it as it pilots the affairs of the party in this critical transitional period of the party’s life.

“To this end, we are not at all deceived by the supposed olive branch being offered by Senator Ali Modu Sherrif, knowing that the only thing that can come from traitors of his ilk is nothing but a poisoned chalice and a Greek gift.”

Earlier in the day, the Nigeria Police Force had barricaded the International Conference Centre, Abuja, venue of the scheduled stakeholders’ meeting.

The action, it was gathered, was sequel to the judgment of the Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt, which, on Friday, recognised Sheriff as the national chairman of the party.

A’court judgment, solution to crisis, says Uzodinma

Meanwhile, a member of the Sheriff-led faction of the PDP, Senator Hope Uzodinma, on Monday, described the judgment of the Court of Appeal, nullifying the National Caretaker Committee of the party, as a political solution.

“The last judgment by the Appeal Court has created a window for a political solution,” he said.

Uzodinma, in an interview with journalists in Abuja, faulted the embattled Makarfi for calling a party stakeholders’ meeting on Monday after he had been sacked by the appellate court.

He said, “We are not talking about factions anymore. I am a lawmaker and not a law-breaker. If the Appeal Court has said Sheriff is the chairman, it goes without saying that people, who understand the doctrine of the rule of law, should obey the pronouncement of the court of competent jurisdiction, unless, otherwise, any court of superior record, in this instance, the Supreme Court, says tomorrow that Sheriff is no longer the chairman.

“For Makarfi to now want to summon a meeting on behalf of the PDP, we want to ask why? Committed members of the party like us will not even look up to any court for solution to this impasse.

EFCC:Court fixes date for Patient Jonathan's N2bn suit by Stooi76(m) : 5:41 pm On Feb 21

A Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has adjourned till April 24, 2017, the hearing of the suit brought before it by the wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, Patience, against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on the enforcement of her fundamental human rights.

Patience had gone to court to seek a declaration that the freezing of her bank accounts and those of her relatives by the EFCC was a violation of her fundamental human rights to own property and to fair hearing.

She also claimed that the breaking into, and ransacking of her family property by officers of the commission while executing a search warrant, was a violation of her fundamental human rights to privacy and family life.

She also sought the sum of N2bn as damages for the alleged violation of her fundamental human rights by the commission.

But the EFCC, in its motion of preliminary objection, sought an order dismissing/striking out the entire suit for lack of jurisdiction and another order striking out the entire suit for being speculative.

Counsel for the EFCC, Mr. Kayode Oni, on Monday, raised the preliminary objection challenging the suit brought before it by the former president’s wife.

However, her counsel, Granville Abibo (SAN), disagreed with the filing and service of a preliminary objection by the anti-graft body.

Abibo maintained that the filing and service of a preliminary objection in the matter was late and should be not be entertained.

The counsel prayed for more time to allow him file a response to the preliminary objection brought by the EFCC, adding that it had just been served a counter affidavit by the agency.

But Oni told the court that he was served with the processes by the applicant’s counsel last week and that he also filed his response last week.

After listening to both counsels, Justice Salihu Saidu, adjournment the case till April 24, 2017.

Some protesting women and youths outside the court premises, however, expressed dissatisfaction over EFCC’s action against Mrs. Jonathan.

A curious child asked his mother: “Mommy, why are some of your hairs turning grey?”

The mother tried to use this occasion to teach her child: “It is because of you, dear. Every bad action of yours will turn one of my hairs grey!”

The child replied innocently: “Now I know why grandmother has only grey hairs on her head.”

Wrong email address: by Stooi76(m) : 5:52 pm On Feb 21

A couple going on vacation but his wife was on a business trip so he went to the destination first and his wife would meet him the next day.

When he reached his hotel, he decided to send his wife a quick email.

Unfortunately, when typing her address, he mistyped a letter and his note was directed instead to an elderly preacher’s wife whose husband had passed away only the day before.

When the grieving widow checked her email, she took one look at the monitor, let out a piercing scream, and fell to the floor in a dead faint.

At the sound, her family rushed into the room and saw this note on the screen:

Dearest Wife,
Just got checked in. Everything prepared for your arrival tomorrow.

P.S. Sure is hot down here. cheesy

Clever kids: by Stooi76(m) : 5:55 pm On Feb 21

A police officer found a perfect hiding place for watching for speeding motorists.

One day, the officer was amazed when everyone was under the speed limit, so he investigated and found the problem.

A 10 years old boy was standing on the side of the road with a huge hand painted sign which said “Radar Trap Ahead.”

A little more investigative work led the officer to the boy’s accomplice: another boy about 100 yards beyond the radar trap with a sign reading “TIPS” and a bucket at his feet full of change.
