Muslim school students protest Valentine’s Day by Stooi76(m) : 3:04 am On Feb 14

Muslim school students staged a protest against Valentine’s Day on Monday, denouncing what they said was a Western celebration that encourages casual sex.

While teenagers in many countries treat the day as an occasion to declare love for their classmates, in the Indonesian city of Surabaya it was a different story as students from one school held a noisy demonstration.

“Say no to Valentine!” chanted the students, who were aged between 13 and 15 and included many girls wearing headscarves.

It was the latest expression of anger at Valentine’s Day in the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country, where Islamic clerics and some pious Muslims typically use the occasion to target what they see as Western decadence.

“This protest was organised as we have seen on television that Valentine’s Day tends to be associated with free sex,” said Pandu Satria, organiser of the demonstration that was attended by scores of students. “That makes us afraid.”

Ida Indahwati Waliulu, headmaster of the school which is run by an Islamic organisation, added: “There is a certain pride about this positive action carried out by the students.”

Several cities across the country also banned people from celebrating the occasion.

PDP will bounce back in 2019, says Jonathan by Stooi76(m) : 7:50 pm On Feb 14

Despite losing the last general elections, former President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday declared that the Peoples Democratic Party remains the biggest and the strongest party in Nigeria.

The former President said that the PDP would bounce back in 2019.

He said that the outcome of the last general elections, which the party lost to the All Progressives Congress, was a minor setback which he said did not diminish the party.

Jonathan spoke when he received a delegation of the PDP Strategy Review and Inter-party Committee, which visited him at his private residence in Abuja.

The ex-President advocated for the strengthening of institutions in the country, while responding to a complaint over the independence of the Independent National Electoral Commission under this administration by his visitors.

Jonathan said, “I am among the persons who believe that for a nation to grow, the institutions must be very strong, just like you mentioned about INEC. There is no way a nation will grow with weak institutions because everything about politics is about the people, not about the individuals.

“And as long you are interested in the people, you are interested in the growth of the society, the development of the nation, the only thing that will make the impossible possible is that the institutions must be strong.

“You see, as powerful as America is, look at President Donald Trump’s decision and the court say no, you can’t do this and of course they have to shoot it down to move forward. That is the strength of an institution. That is the only way individuals could be regulated so that you can grow.”

On the fate of his party ahead of the 2019 elections, he said. “The PDP is still the biggest and the strongest party. Irrespective of what happened in the 2015 general elections. Yes, we lost the presidential election but that doesn’t diminish us. Every other party still knows that the PDP is a leading party.

“Losing the Presidency is something temporary. We should be able to get that position back as long as we are able to get our act together. I am happy that you people are working towards that.”

The former president, however, advocated the use of statutory delegates for the party’s primaries to check imposition of candidates.

He also endorsed the alliance talks between the PDP and other political parties.

The Strategy Committee, headed by a former Minister of Information, Prof. Jerry Gana, also presented its report to two former founding members of the party.

They are a former National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, and a former Chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, Chief Tony Anenih.

In his remarks, Tukur lambasted those defecting from the PDP on the perceived promise of a better future, likening them to those running to Europe for a better future that he said was unpredictable.

He expressed happiness that the PDP was rebranding and trying to return power to the people, adding that there was no place in the country “where you do not find a member of our party.”

Anenih, on his part, blamed selfishness among some party leaders for the state of the PDP today. He said the party could have gone beyond its present status but for the selfishness of some party leaders.

He, however, charged the party leadership to engage in constructive criticism.

Gana, while addressing the elder statesmen, at the separate visits, alleged that INEC had become a tool in the hands of the APC.

INEC begins 2019 election preparation by Stooi76(m) : 8:05 pm On Feb 14

The Independent National Electoral Commission said on Monday that it had started preparations for the 2019 general elections.

The Chairman of the commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, told the House of Representatives’ Committee on Electoral Matters, in Abuja, that the early preparation was to guard against INEC being behind schedule.

The current All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government has barely 26 months left in its four-year tenure.

Yakubu was at the National Assembly to defend the electoral umpire’s 2017 budget.

The committee is chaired by a member of the APC from Gombe State, Mrs. Aisha Dukku.

Yakubu said a “strategic plan” for the elections had been drawn up and was being fine-tuned to ascertain the financial implications of the polls.

Presidential, National Assembly and House of Assembly elections will hold in 2019 while the governorship poll will be conducted in 29 states of the federation in the same year.

Yakubu informed the lawmakers that the strategic plan was being discussed at various levels of government, particularly the executive arm.

He explained that part of the plans was to work out the budget for the elections, beginning with a supplementary budget request to be submitted to the National Assembly later this year.

Yakubu added that in 2018, there would be a full budget for the 2019 polls in addition to the regular budget of the commission.

The INEC chairman added, “At this point, we cannot put a figure to the budget for the elections (2019) until we complete the process of validating the strategic plan.

“Therefore, we are likely to approach the executive and the National Assembly for supplementary budget in this 2017.

“The supplementary aspect should incorporate something for the elections and in 2018, we will have it in the main proposals.”

The Budget Office had given INEC N45bn to undertake its activities this year.

Yakubu said N20.9bn of the figure would go into personnel cost while another N19.1bn was proposed for elections that would be conducted this year.

Ban on Danfo : Lagos NURTW asks members not to panic by Stooi76(m) : 6:12 pm On Feb 15

The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Lagos Chapter, on Tuesday advised its members not to panic over the proposed ban on operations of yellow commercial buses in Lagos.

The state Chairman of the union, Mr Tajudeen Agbede, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

Lagos State Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode had on Feb. 6 announced a plan to stop operations of yellow commercial buses popularly known as ‘danfo’ for a more efficient, well-structured and world-class mass transport system.

Ambode said that the well-structured transport system would ease movement within the state and make Lagos cleaner without burdening the people in terms of taxes.

Agbede told NAN that the union was discussing the proposed ban with the government, adding that the union was ready to cooperate with the state government on its mega city project.

“We are still discussing with the government on the proposed ban on yellow buses, but we believe it is going to yield a positive result. The union is ready to comply with the conditions of making the state a mega city.”

“We are ready to change the colour of our buses and also comply with the directive to follow the service lanes,” Agbede said.

According to him, the union members are also ready to refurbish their vehicles to attain mega city standards.

Buhari to arrive Nigeria soon by Stooi76(m) : 6:15 pm On Feb 15

A presidential aide, Malam Garba Shehu, has asked Nigerians to be ready to see President Muhammadu Buhari return from his medical vacation in London to the country anytime soon.

Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President, made the statement in an interview with Channels Television in Abuja on Tuesday.

He said the president was no longer “enjoying his stay’’ outside the country.

“As a matter of fact, we should be getting ready to see the president flesh and blood and that will be as soon as possible.

“The president (himself) is looking forward to being home to be with his people.

“I don’t think he is enjoying any longer an extended vacation outside the country,’’ Shehu said.

Commenting on the president’s telephone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump, the spokesman said it was “undiplomatic’’ for anyone to demand for the release of the audio recording of the conversation.

According to him, releasing an audio containing the telephone conversation between two presidents is highly unethical and against modern civilisation.

“No, I don’t think so; I don’t think it is permitted in international diplomacy. I think if we had recorded Mr Trump in this conversation it would have offended our diplomatic relations.

“I think the Americans themselves would not have recorded this conversation of president to president,’’ he said.

On the president’s medical test results being expected from doctors, Shehu said he had no information on whether the president had collected the results or not.

“No, we have no information on that (test results). If he had received them, he would have been on the plane back home.’’

Shehu said there was not enough time for the two presidents to discuss other continental and international issues.

He, however, expressed optimism that the conversation would boost bilateral relations between Nigeria and the U.S.

“Well, there wasn’t enough time to talk about everything. I think the point at what will follow is in the invitation that President Trump has extended to our president (Buhari) to come over.

“That is the kind of opportunity that was presented to Nigeria to put all the issues on the desk.

“As for their immigration policy, I think our president has been clear about one thing – the choices made by the Americans as to who to lead them, in this case, Mr Trump, is entirely their own choice.

“We have no business interfering with their domestic affairs.

“As to the countries that have been barred, it has been clearly specified and Nigeria did not feature in the list,’’ he added.

Buhari proceeded on medical vacation on Jan. 19 and wrote to the Senate that Vice-president Yemi Osinbajo would act in his absence.

His absence which has stretched beyond the initial 10-day request has generated speculations about his health condition in spite of the fact that he wrote the Senate again on Feb. 5 for an extension of the leave period.

On Monday, Buhari spoke with Trump by telephone at the request of the American president.

The President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, said in a statement that the two leaders discussed ways to improve cooperation in the fight against terrorism.

He said Trump assured Buhari of the U.S Government’s readiness to enter a new deal in helping Nigeria in the supply of weapons to combat terrorism.

“Trump also invited Buhari to Washington at a mutually convenient date,’’ Adesina said.

He disclosed that in the proposed 2017 budget, the allocation to the Nigeria Army was N152. 843billion out of which01 per cent was for personnel Emolument while 39.39 per cent was for overhead capital budget respectively.

Buratai impressed it upon the Committee that the timely and complete implementation of 2017 budget would enhance the fulfillment of the Army its mandate.

Ecuador, FG partner on agricultural research, space science to control oil spillage. by Stooi76(m) : 6:24 pm On Feb 15

THE Republic of Ecuador has offered to partner with the Federal Government on agricultural research and space technology for the detection and control of oil spillage in the Niger Delta region.

“We have research institute in the same field, we are in the same tropical zone, we have scientists that have developed methodology on how to localise oil spills and pollution of hydrocarbon to satellite images”, it added.

The Ambassador of the Republic of Ecuador, Leapoldo Verdeso made the offer when he paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu in his office in Abuja.

He said the country was interested in sharing methodology on how to detect oil spills using satellite images and knowledge on agricultural research.

In his response, Dr Onu stated that the cleanup of the Niger Delta area was very important to this administration and the government was committed to ensuring that mangrove forest was restored and the people have access to clean water that were around them.

He noted that the agriculture is 90% science and technology, hence, the partnership would reduce food wastage and make food available all year round.

According to him, “we work closely with Federal Ministry of Environment to preserve our environment and reduce poverty” he noted.

The minister further remarked that the request coming from Ecuador was timely in view of the commitment of the Buhari administration to ensure that Nigeria was able to feed itself, diversify the economy, create wealth and reduce poverty.

Dr Onu then commended the gesture from the Ambassador, noting that it was a confirmation of the long standing relationships between the two countries.

Soldiers sack Agatu villages, kill pregnant women, five others by Stooi76(m) : 6:32 pm On Feb 15

Soldiers have sacked six villages in the Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State, killing six persons, including a pregnant woman.

This followed the killing of a soldier at the weekend by some youths in the area.

But the Brigade Commander of the 707 Special Force, Brig. Clement Apere, denied that soldiers attacked the people.

“The operation we conducted in the area was carried out in a professional way,” he said.

However, sources from Agatu, who spoke to our correspondent on the telephone on Tuesday, explained that six villages — Olegadakolo, Ikpele, Otugologwu, Iwali, Okpanchenyi and Egba — were sacked by the soldiers.

At Egba community, sources said a pregnant woman was hit by a stray bullet, adding that the six villages had been deserted.

“This is genocide on our people, as I’m talking to you now, six villages have been sacked, children and women have moved out of the affected villages, while many people have been arrested by the invading soldiers,” a resident of one of the villages, who pleaded anonymity said.

The council’s sole administrator, Mr. Mike Inalegwu, who spoke to our correspondent on the telephone, also denied the killing of people in Agatu communities but admitted the invasion of military personnel.

“There is no iota of truth in that, no one was killed, the military were only on the mission to recover their arms and ammunition,” he said.

Speaking at a press conference, the commander, 707 Special Forces Brigade, Brig. Gen. Clement Apere, said only one person was arrested.

Father regrets killing twins daughter accused of witchcraft by Stooi76(m) : 6:35 pm On Feb 15

A 33-year-old man, Festus Anyanime, on Tuesday said he would forever regret killing his twin daughters because they allegedly confessed to be witches.

Anyanime, a taxi driver from Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross River State, said he killed his 11-year-old twin daughters, identified as Emediong and Mfoniso, with poisoned malt drink on January 10, 2017.

The suspect, who was paraded alongside other criminals at the Cross River State Police Command in Calabar, said he had initially planned to take the children for spiritual delivery but had to change his mind for unknown reasons.

The killer father, looking confused, lamented that he had suffered to bring up the children before the incident.

He said, “I did not do it intentionally. I have not been able to come to terms with what happened and I cannot really explain. Since it happened, I have not been myself. I am not happy with myself as it is. I will forever regret what happened.

“I suffered for those children and I wonder why I did that to them. It is largely the handiwork of the devil and I beg for God’s forgiveness. I was told that they were witches and I was taking them to where I could rescue them but there was a mysterious change of mind somewhere along the line.”

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hafiz Inuwa, said the suspect was arrested following report by one David Innocent and Richard Orok after the twin girls were found lying along a bush track in Njachang village in Akamkpa Local Government Area.

He said, “On January 11, 2017 at about 9.20am, we acted on report received from one David Innocent and Richard Orok, both from Njachang village in Akamkpa LGA that two identical female children were found lying along Uyanga bush track. That on close look, one of them was dead while the other was bleeding and could speak.

“She gave her name as Emediong (11-years) and that of her sister as Mfoniso. She also gave the name of their father as Festus Anyanime. That on January 10, 2017, their father told them that he was taking them to their mother and on getting to the bush track, he gave them malt. The malt drink was suspected to be mixed with poisonous substance unknown to them.

“She said that shortly after drinking it, her sister died and their father abandoned them there. Sadly, Emediong later died in the hospital. Both corpses are now deposited at the Akamkpa General Hospital.”

Inuwa said that the suspect had confessed to committing the crime, adding that he would soon be charged to court.

1.7 Million candidates to sit for 2017 UTME- Oloyede by Stooi76(m) : 6:38 pm On Feb 15

The Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, has said 1.7 million candidates are expected to sit 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination in April.

He said this on Tuesday in Abeokuta at the sideline of the examination body’s Information and Communication Technology retreat, involving civil society groups, students and other major stakeholders.

The two-day retreat held within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library complex in Abeokuta.

He said JAMB also aimed to increase the capacity of its Computer-Based Test centres in order to make the April examination seamless.

He said, “We are expecting 1.7 million candidates to sit JAMB this year and we want to make sure we satisfy these candidates within a week or thereabout.

“That is why we are increasing the capacity of the Computer-Based Test centres to be able to examine more candidates within a given date.”

Oloyede, who said the body would not promise a hitch-free examination, noted that there were changes and innovations ongoing, which would send some illegal operators, who had defrauded candidates in the past, out of business.

The JAMB boss, however, said the examination body would not be deterred in its mission to serve its candidates better.

He said, “I must be frank with you, I cannot promise a hitch- free examination because we are testing certain things.

“We are changing certain things. We want to question the status quo and of course, we expect a fight back by interest that will be trampled upon.

“We are going to be as sincere as possible in the direction we are going. We are going to be as flexible as humanly possible. We are not promising a hitch-free examination.

“We envisaged that there will be hitches here and there, but they will not be insurmountable. Rather than promising the nation a hitch-free examination, we will be promising a direction we will all be pleased with.”

He argued that this informed JAMB’s decision to invite stakeholders to critique its processes as it would not want to continue in the wrong direction.

He said, “We are creating some ICT facilities and we want our stakeholders, prospective candidates, respected scholars, institutions, civil societies to come together and critique what we are doing so that we can be sure before we go too far in a wrong direction.

“This is with a view to harvesting good ideas that could improve what we are doing.”

He said the CBT had come to stay, adding that four African countries had indicated interest to understudy Nigeria regarding the examination system.

Ortom Gives Agatu 72 Hours To Produce Soldier’s Killer by Stooi76(m) : 1:00 am On Feb 17

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State yesterday gave the people of Agatu 72 hours to produce those of their ‘boys’ who killed one of the soldiers deployed to the area for peace keeping.

Some youths in Agatu local government area on Saturday allegedly killed a soldier and wounded two others drafted from the 72 Battalion in Makurdi to keep vigilance in the area.

He described the killing of the soldier as highly condemnable, stressing that the military would not rest on its oars until all those fingered in the act were apprehended.

CCTV Exposes Rivers Police Kill Painter By Roadside (photo) by Stooi76(m) : 1:04 am On Feb 17

A painter, Mr . Ese Akpan, had told his family on Tuesday that he was going out to get the money owed him by a construction company.

He , however , did not get to his destination , as he was killed by a stray bullet from a police team escorting a bullion van to a bank.

According to a Closed -Circuit Television camera , which captured the scene , Ese was shot at exactly 1. 45pm on Old Aba Road , Rumuomasi, Port-Harcourt , Rivers State .

PUNCH Metro , which obtained footage of the incident , observed that Camera 4 captured Ese as he walked along the road while the police van came behind.
The second side , captured by Camera 1, showed a woman with a baby standing at the bus stop as Ese approached .

There was a sudden gunshot which hit the 60- year -old , while the frightened woman fled the sight.

About two minutes afterwards , some sympathisers , including workers of First Rivers Hospital Limited , a private facility in front of which the incident occurred, rushed to help the victim.

An official at the hospital, who did not want to be identified , said a few minutes after the victim was taken to the hospital, a man came in to check on him .

He said , “ The man said the escort team was coming from an eatery at Rumukoro where the operatives had gone to pick some money. He said they were heading towards a bank in the area and he was driving behind the van when they fired the shot. He said they usually did that when they approached where they were taking money to . Unfortunately , the man was hit by the bullet . He told us to save his life . ”

A senior official at the hospital , who spoke for the management , said efforts by the hospital to save Ese were abortive.

“ Our doctors, nurses and matrons were all involved in the battle to save his life. He lost a lot of blood. The bullet destroyed his internal organs . We took him to the theatre , and our workers even donated three pints of blood to save him , but he died . He was able to give us his name and address before passing on , ” she added.

She noted that the hospital reported the matter to a police station in the area.

The widow of the victim, Mrs. Christiana Akpan , said when she attempted to report the case at the Area Command, Moscow Road, she was chased out of the command.

She added that when she went to the governor ’ s office , she was not given any audience.

Christiana told PUNCH Metro that her husband had left the house with a plan to demand payment of a debt owed him by a construction company.

She said , “ He worked as a painter and had executed a project for a construction company last year . He used the money that we saved for our house rent to complete the project . The firm paid him part, but still owed him about N 266, 900.

“ Since that time , he had been going to ask for the balance without any result. Our landlady recently served us a notice to quit and he became desperate to recover the money.

“ On Tuesday, January 31, around 1pm, we both left the house and when we got to Mile 1, we parted ways . I went to see a friend , while he went to the company. It was not up to one hour that I was called that my husband had been shot.

“ I went to report at the area command , but immediately I said policemen shot my husband , I was chased out . I went to the governor ’ s office and I was sent away like a thief. ”

PUNCH Metro learnt that the deceased , who was survived by four children, had been taken by the family to a mortuary in his hometown in the Essien Udium Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

The family ’ s first child , Kingsley, demanded that the government bring the culprits to book and pay the damages .

“ Before my dad died , he told me that he was shot by the police. The police are silent about the case and have refused to do anything. We want the government to bury him and pay damages, ” he added .

Another member of the family , Blessing, asked the authorities not to sweep the case under the carpet .
The state Police Public Relations Officer , DSP Omoni Nnamdi, said he was not aware of the incident, promising to get back to PUNCH Metro .

He had, however, yet to do so as of the time of filing this report.

Ambode Targets 3000MW 24HR Power Generation For Lagos by Stooi76(m) : 1:08 am On Feb 17

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Wednesday said the quest by the country to achieve energy security can no longer be left for the Federal Government to address alone, just as he revealed plans by the State to attain 24-hour power supply through generation of 3000megawatts of electricity by 2022.

Speaking at Lagos House in Ikeja after receiving the report of the Embedded Power Technical Committee constituted by the State Government with representatives from the public and private sector, Governor Ambode said while the Federal Government continues in its efforts to resolve the power crisis, the sustainable solution going forward would be the pulling together of commitment and resources of all stakeholders in the power value chain.

While explaining the rationale behind the embedded power initiative of the State Government, Governor Ambode said the major bane of the power situation in the country has always been with transmission, adding that the initiative was designed to permanently resolve power crisis in the State and by extension in the country.

He said: “The reason why we embarked on this initiative is that we believe strongly that if the power problem is solved in Lagos, it is technically solved in the whole of the country and so because Lagos has more or less tested a solution that works, we can scale this up and also address it on a national scale.

“The problem of power in Nigeria is the problem of transmission and that is the truth. Yes, we have generating companies and we have distributing companies and they say power is in the hands of the private sector but we know technically that that is not totally true.

“We also know that transmission is hundred per cent owned by government but we have tested here in Lagos and we have been able to provide 48 kilowatts of power without transmitting it which means that we generate and then distribute.

“So, if that works for 48 kilowatts, can we put Lagos into clusters and actually use embedded power initiative to drive the business of Lagos? That is what this initiative is all about and I want to thank all the stakeholders for submitting their business template into what government sees as the right step to take so that we can join hands together to say in the next two to five years, we can actually power Lagos and then grow our GDP.”

Governor Ambode said the target of the State Government is to generate up to 3,000MW of power through accelerated deployment of various embedded power plants in strategic locations in the State within three to five years.

Out of the 3000MW, the Governor said 350MW would be delivered by Q1 2018, additional 850MW by Q4 2018, and the balance of 1,800MW not later Q3 2022, while the State Government will support the Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) to be signed between the Distribution Companies and the embedded power providers, to enhance bankability of the projects.

He said the embedded power will be distributed off-grid within Lagos State through the network of Eko and Ikeja Distribution Companies, while the State Government will support the Distribution Companies in upgrading their distribution infrastructure and installation of smart prepaid meters in the areas where embedded power is deployed.

Other areas of collaboration, according to the Governor, would include support for collection, appropriate legislation and enforcement of power theft laws.

Besides, Governor Ambode said his administration will collaborate with operators of oil blocks in the Lagos area to accelerate the extraction of gas feedstocks for power generation, adding that alternative sources of fuel would be explored to sustain uninterrupted power supply in the medium to long term, including partnerships on investments in gas pipeline infrastructure through the State’s owned oil and gas Corporation – Ibile Oil and Gas.
While recalling the success of the Light Up Lagos Project with installation of over 47,000 poles of street lights, and connection of about 67 communities in the Ibeju Lekki axis to national grid after about six years off grid under the rural electrification project, Governor Ambode said another 32 communities in Badagry which have not had access to electricity for over sixteen years would be connected to the grid within the next 21 days.

Responding on behalf of Distribution Companies (DISCOS), Chairman of Eko Distribution Company, Mr. Charles Momoh commended Governor Ambode for the embedded power initiative, saying it was the best thing that has happened to Lagos State in recent times.

Married Man Baths Lover With Acid For Refusing To Be Second Wife:

A married man, Mr. Chidi Nbosiadinjo, has been accused of hiring two thugs to pour a bucket of acid one Miss Ogochukwu Nwosu, his girlfriend, wis second wife.

The incident took place at about 7pm on 6 October, 2016 at Ilasa bus stop in Lagos State as Ogochukwu returned from work. A relative of Ogochukwu told SaharaReporters that those who witnessed the acid attack said it was carried out by two men, who came on a motorcycle. The one with the bucket of acid jumped down and drenched Ogochukwu with the corrosive substance.

Mr. Peter Nwosu, a brother to Ogochukwu, said Mr. Nbosidianijo became a friend of their family when he helped the first son secure a Malaysian visa after he had been duped four times.

"Mr. Nbosodianijo helped our eldest brother get an original Malaysian visa after our brother tried four times and was duped. Somebody introduced us to him and he connected my brother to someone who eventually helped in getting original visa. Since then, he became a part of the family and our neighbors know him as such," he said.

It was gathered that Mr. Nbosidianijo, who is married with two kids, proposed to Ogochukwu after about two years of dating, but knowing he is married, she turned down the marriage proposal. This made him angry and he allegedly vowed that he would not let Ogochukwu marry another man because he had spent so much money on her.

"He said if he can't marry her, another person will not marry her. He said he cannot sow for another man to reap," Mr. Peter explained.

Ogochukwu's mother was also said to have told Mr. Nbosidianijo to obtain the approval of his wife to take another wife. She said her daughter's life was being threatened by Mr. Nbosidinajo's wife.

Ogochukwu's brother said he was told by a neighbor that he saw Mr. Nbosidinajo with two men loitering around the victim's house at Lawason, Lagos a day before the attack.

"A day before the sad event took place, one of our neighbors saw Mr. Nbosidinajo on the decking of our house at Lawason in Surulere late in the evening. He was said to have pointed at our room. This neighbor told our mother and when our mother called Mr. Nbosidinajo to confirm if he came to our house, he admitted that he came. Before that, Ogochukwu also told us that he had gone to her photographer's place to collect one of her pictures," said Peter Nwosu.

He added that Mr. Nbosidinajo's wife called a few hours after the attack to say Ogochukwu had not seen anything yet. "That he said my sister wouldn't be able to marry another if she doesn't marry him and his wife calling to issue fresh threats show that the husband and wife ordered the attack," said Peter Nwosu. Since the attack, Ogochukwu has undergone five major surgeries, and she is preparing for another to open her eyes, which remain shut.o open her eyes, which remain shut.

Mr. Peter revealed that the case was reported to Itire Police Station after which it was transferred to Alagbon Police Station where both Mr. and Mrs. Nbosidinajo were arrested and released a couple of days later. However, when our correspondent contacted Mrs. Joyce, the Investigative Officer in charge of the case, she flared up at being phoned and hung up when the question was asked about the incident.

The National President of Bus Conductors Association of Nigeria, Mr. Israel Adeshola, says that as from March it is mandatory for bus conductors in Lagos state to wear uniforms, name tags, and badges.

Adeshola on Thursday said that the Lagos State government has approved wearing of uniforms and badges.

He said that the use of badges and wearing of uniforms by over 3,000 bonafide members got the approval of the government on Monday.

He said, “We are in collaboration with Lagos state government on the issue of badges and uniforms for commercial conductors, which was finalised on Monday.

“This is because we don’t want to start without the government’s approval. So by the first week of March, we will roll them out.”

Adeshola explained that the introduction of uniforms, name tags and badges had become necessary to enforce decorum and ensure the safety of duly registered members and members of the public.

According to him, with the vital information on the badge, any conductor involved in a crime can easily be identified and apprehended.

The national president explained that the novel idea was being experimented in Lagos state before other states can take a cue.

FG moves to stop kidnapping in Lagos by Stooi76(m) : 5:52 pm On Feb 18

THE Federal Government is deploying hi tech security equipment to Lagos to stop the menace of kidnapping in a corner of that state and in neighbouring Ogun State.

The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, who disclosed this on Friday, decried the incessant cases of kidnapping in the Lagos area even as he said several suspects involved in kidnapping had been arrested.

The Police boss, while speaking with journalists and selected human rights organisations in Lagos on Friday also described the proposed creation of more security outfits as a waste of resources.

Apart from Lagos, another state that will benefit from the security equipment to be deployed in the next one week is Rivers State, he said.

He specifically said that tracking machines will be deployed to Lagos and Rivers States to track kidnappers and other criminals in the two regions.

The IGP said: “The tracking unit has helped us a lot in solving kidnap cases. I can tell you that we have resolved 90 per cent of kidnap cases across the country. We have rescued victims and arrested most of the suspects in almost all the crimes. Some of the suspects are in our custody.

“We have been able to achieve this with the tracker in Abuja. So, in order to achieve more, we are establishing two other tracking units. One in Lagos and another in Rivers State to serve the East and West.” he added.

While saying that the police intended to buy a lot of gunboats to police the waterways, Idris disclosed that “those terrorising Lagos and Ogun states are from Delta and Ondo states who felt there was more money in Lagos.”

He added that the police would soon come up with the concept of “floating police stations so that the police can dominate the creeks” and deal a fatal blow on kidnappers and other criminals using the waterwyas.

Idris also described the police as the greatest casualty of the Boko Haram activities, claiming that the Force lost more personnel and facilities to the Boko Haram war .

As part of the efforts to stem the tide of kidnapping in the country, the police boss said that the police would in the next few weeks establish tracking units in Lagos and River States.

Idris said: “The funding of the police is costly. What we are trying to do is to pursue 50 per cent of our budgetary requirement from other sources. We are also looking for other avenues where we can address the problems of the police.”

“At the same time, we are hoping that the National Assembly would pass the Bill establishing Police Trust Fund, by so doing, open up other sources for the police to generate money,” Idris added.

He stated that, “It is possible. It is already happening in Lagos (Security Trust Fund) and has been working wonderfully. We are aware that the Federal Government is financially constrained and so, we don’t think it is right to over burden the system by creating other agencies, which would require funding and create rivalry.

“But if more money is availed the police and more people recruited, we can achieve so much more,” he added.

Idris said “the police lost so many personnel in the course of the Boko Haram insurgency.

“We were the worst hit and still we were not recruiting. So, all these affected the strength of the police.

“Our message has been constant. The country is under-policed. The country has a police force that is grossly underfunded and we need to address these critical issues “ the police boss said .
“The main issue is funding of the police .When you compute the needs of the police, people will shout .In each of the local government in the country, the police is the agency that has the widest spread. When you start calculating the number of vehicles needed, he amount of fuel and even the administrative costs, writing of statement forms, people will shout,” he said.

He said that the police only received N4billion out of the N300 billion that was allocated to it in 2016.

He urged the civil society organisations to call on the National Assembly to consider the funding of the police while adding that funding of the police is in the interest of the country.
