Commissioner of Police in Bayelsa State, Uche Anozia, says he did not send hoodlums to the home of former Governor Seriake Dickson.

Mr Dickson had accused the police boss of sending hoodlums to attack his home in protest following the Supreme Court judgement which upturned the election of David Lyon as governor.

Mr Anozia said he had worked with the ex-governor and that he does his job ‘with the fear of God’.

“The duty of the police is to maintain law and order, and protect lives and property. On February 13, the Supreme Court reversed the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC), there was violence and the police went out to control it,” he said.

“We have to locate the governor’s house because apart from his house in the village, I do not know where his other houses are.

“Through information, we got the house and discovered it had been looted. So I couldn’t have directed anybody to go and destroy property or kill.

“Therefore, this particular information is bitter to taste and repugnant to my hearing. I never did that and will not do so. I do my job basically with the fear of God…”

The CP said eight persons have been arrested in connection to the incident and have been remanded.

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of bringing up claims used against him in previous cases.

Mr Saraki’s lawyers, on Thursday, appeared before Justice Rilwan Aikawa of the Federal High Court, Lagos, to oppose the application by the EFCC for the forfeiture of his Ilorin home allegedly funded partly with money provided by Kwara State Government in fulfilment of the Governor and Deputy Governor (Payment of Pension) Law 2010 of Kwara State.

They said the claims were the same made before the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court between September 22, 2015, and July 6, 2018, when all the courts concluded and gave judgement respectively to the effect that there was no prima facie case established against Saraki.

“We will like, for emphasis, to state that the fictitious claims by EFCC of a certain amount being taken from government coffers and deposited by aides have no basis, is totally untrue and a fabricated lie,” a statement by Saraki’s spokesman, Yusuph Olaniyonu, read on Friday.

“The agency has not produced any oral or documentary evidence of approval, instruction or endorsement by Dr Saraki as proof of such act. These claims made newspaper headlines when they were first thrown into the public space by the same EFCC in September 2015 during the CCT trial and no evidence has been produced in support of such claim. They remain mere headline-grabbing stunt.

“We hereby assure the associates and supporters of Dr Saraki that he remains unflinching in his belief in the ability of the Nigerian judiciary to always do justice to all persons and at all times. We believe that justice shall prevail in this case, as well.”

Following the incident of Coronavirus recorded in Ogun State, the state government says 28 people who had contact with the Italian victim of the disease have been identified and quarantined, The PUNCH reports.

The government also said the firm where the victim visited in Ewekoro has been shut down.
 
The state Governor, Dapo Abiodun, disclosed this, on Friday, while addressing newsmen on the update of the Coronavirus incident in the state, The PUNCH reports.

The governor said efforts were on to identify more contacts to curb the spread of the disease.

Abiodun said, “The particular company in question has been practically shut down and they have set up two isolation centres within the premises.

“They have identified all those that have been in contact with this index, totalling about 28. All those 28 people have been quarantined.”

Earlier, the Commissioner for Health in the state, Dr Tomi Coker, said the victim, whose name was not given, fell ill in a cement company in Ewekoro, where he visited for a business engagement from Italy.

Coker while explaining how the 44-year-old Italian victim entered the state said, “In the last 12 hours, the first case of the chronic virus has been identified in Nigeria and the individual was visiting Ogun State.

“The individual is of Italian origin and he is a consultant to the Lafarge, Ewekoro factory.”

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) called in its second witness to testify against Azeez Fashola popularly known as Naira Marley, during the continuation of the singer’s cyber fraud trial on Thursday February 27.

Recall that Naira Marley is facing an 11-count charge bordering on conspiracy, possession of counterfeit cards and fraud.

Testifying in court, EFCC’s second witness Mr Anosike Augustine who is a mobile forensic expert with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), recalled how he analysed the contents of an iPhone 11 allegedly retrieved from Naira Marley during investigation.

He told Justice Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal High Court in Lagos that he produced a report of his findings after extracting and analyzing the evidence recovered from the singer’s phone.

However after EFCC moved to submit the 30-page report, Naira Marley’s counsel and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Olalekan Ojo objected to the tendering of the document. He insisted that it was not part of the documents front-loaded to the defence team and he was unaware of its contents.

Justice Oweibo subsequently adjourned the case to allow the defence and prosecution team to sort out and reconcile whether the report was front-loaded or not.

In a special advisory sent out to the parish priests, religious and the lay faithful, His Grace, Most Reverend Alfred Adewale Martins, the Archbishop and Metropolitan See of Lagos also directed that communion will now be received in the palm.

During this season of Lent, the Archbishop also in his circular encouraged the lay faithful to “do Stations of the Cross privately on Wednesdays while public celebrations will be reduced to Fridays only”. He advised people to stay home if they feel unwell. “If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention and call in advance. Follow the directions of your local health authority”.

IgbereTV reports that President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday has expressed disappointment over the unauthorised release of 295 petroleum tankers seized for smuggling on 17th December 2019, by some security officials charged with the responsibility of protecting our borders.

I have approved the recommendations of the Board of Inquiry set up by the NSA to investigate the release, without due authorization, of 295 smuggled petroleum tankers, by some security officials charged with the important responsibility of protecting Nigeria’s borders.

The Board of Inquiry recommended that all officials, whether civilian or security operatives, found to have connived to undermine government’s efforts should be withdrawn from the ongoing border drill and severely sanctioned by their respective organizations.

I have accepted the recommendations and directed the immediate withdrawal and replacement of all those found culpable. Their respective organizations will also immediately take appropriate disciplinary action.

On the whole the security agencies are doing a good job, securing our borders. I commend them for this, while also reiterating that we will continue to show zero tolerance for corruption and abuse of office.

According to The Nation, as many as eleven more people have been quarantined in Ogun State on account of having physical contact with the Italian carrier of Coronavirus.

They include the driver who picked him from a hotel in Ikeja and those that served him food and drinks in the hotel.

The Ogun State Government on Saturday dismissed speculations that the taxi driver of the coronavirus patient was on the loose.

The Italian himself has been relocated from his original isolated ward to a renovated one, according to Lagos State Health Commissioner Akin Abayomi, while the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF)   promised to ensure the deployment of all resources to promptly respond and contain the spread of   coronavirus in the country.

There are now a total of 39 people quarantined in connection with the index case of coronavirus in the country.

Twenty-eight were originally taken in by Friday.

Giving an update on the situation yesterday at Ewekoro, Ogun State, the Industrial Director of Larfarge Africa Plc, Mr. Segun Soyoye, said the guest house where the Italian stayed and the vehicles including the ambulance used to convey him had been sealed off.

He spoke during an assessment visit to the company’s premises by a combined delegation of the Ogun State government,  the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the World Health Organisation (WHO).

He said the Italian was at the factory to inspect some installed machines brought from a Swedish firm.

He said the man did not go beyond the company’s guest house at Ishofin Estate and he was evacuated as soon as he developed abnormal temperature indicative of coronavirus.

Soyoye added: “The Italian came for a business visit. He was in Lagos on Monday and slept at Airport Hotel, Ikeja. Our driver took him there, and when we observed abnormal temperatures and symptoms, we quickly instituted an Emergency Response Team which is led by the Company CEO.

“We had to find a way of analysing and identifying not only the Italian but also the other contacts.

“The contacts are now 39 and we have quarantined them, the house and clinic as well as the vehicles. We don’t take chances. That is why they are put there.

“Today is Day 3.They will be there for 14 days. We will continue to observe them, we have their database, showing their biodata and other information.

“The doctor is here and what he is doing is to check them on a regular basis. So far everybody is stable. They are not symptomatic. We are providing everything for them over there.

“The other thing that I have not said is that the clinic that was used for the infected person is closed; disinfected and we moved everybody out.

“All the guys on duty that day, they were also quarantined. So they will be there for 14 days as well.”

Earlier on Saturday, the Ogun State denied a social media report that the taxi driver of the coronavirus patient in the country was on the loose.

Government described as fake news, the social media report which quoted the ‘driver’ as demanding the sum of N100m (One hundred million naira) from the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker and threatening to spread the disease if not paid. Nothing can be further from the truth.

“Everyone that had any link with the Italian victim of the dreaded virus since he arrived the country has been quarantined. The others, who these primary contacts also had interactions with are equally being monitored,” Kunle Somorin, the Chief Press Secretary to the state governor said in a statement.

He said: “We wish to put it straight that there is nothing of such. It is the figment of the imagination of some unscrupulous elements whose desire is to incite fear in the members of the public.

“As a government, we assure that all the people already quarantined are in good spirit and they are cooperating with our medical personnel.

“Besides, we already have the phone number of some few other contacts the Italian national came close to and they are being monitored.

“There is no reason to panic. The situation is being controlled and contained.

“It is therefore important we do what is expected of us as individuals in terms of personal hygiene and in ensuring that we sensitize those suspected of symptoms associated with COVID-19.”

According to PREMIUM TIMES, as Nigeria heightens preparedness and response to Covid-19 (Coronavirus), the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has assured that measures have been put in place by the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) to halt the spread of the virus particularly to barracks and military communities.

This is just as Nigeria recorded its first confirmed case of Coronavirus in Lagos. The index case is an Italian businessman who arrived in Nigeria from Milan, Italy on February 25 and was confirmed at the Virology Laboratory of Lagos University Teaching Hospital on February 27, 2020.

The Director of Defence Information (DDI), Onyema Nwachukwu, on Saturday told PRNigeria that medical services of the AFN are on alert and are daily monitoring patients who report sick in any of the medical facilities for detection of any probable carrier, in addition to awareness campaigns.

“Just as we are already doing to prevent outbreak of Lassa fever in barracks communities, the Armed Forces of Nigeria has since commenced vigorous sensitization and awareness campaign in military cantonments and barracks to enlighten personnel and their families on preventive sanitary and hygienic measures to halt the spread of coronavirus.

“Hand sanitizers are already being installed for use by guests as well as personnel in office complexes,” Nwachukwu said.

Former Senator, Shehu Sanni on Sunday commended members of the Catholic Church in the country for the peaceful protest they embarked upon over the prevailing insecurity nationwide, IgbereTV reports.
