A solidarity movement for Labour Party was held in Abuja today, September 24, and the newly wedded couple joined the march straight from their wedding venue.

In a video making the rounds online, the bride was seen still wearing her immaculate, white flowing gown and the groom still donning his suit.

Reacting to this, the presidential candidate congratulated the unnamed couple while wishing them a blissful married life.

In his words;

“Salute and congratulations to this newly wedded couple in Abuja, whose special day coincided with the Obidient Family March in Abuja; and they marched too!

After the success of Are You Sure?, Lyta returns with another bang titled “High Vibration” featuring Naira Marley. Song Produced by Niphkeys, Mixed and Mastered by Timi Jay.

Lawal Opeyemi Raimi popularly known by his stage name L-Y-T-A is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. He signed a record deal with YBNL Nation in 2018 but left the label in May 2019. In 2019, Lyta left YBNL Nation, signed a pushing deal with Doro Musik Gang and released the Killer Tunes-produced hit track “Monalisa” on 12 July 2019. Few weeks after the release of “Monalisa”, Davido reached out to Lyta for a possible remix of the buzzing song. Following their agreement, Davido flew Lyta down to Dakar for the remix and video shoot of “Monalisa” which was later released in August, 2019.

The accompanying music video for the remix was directed by Director K, the Remix went further than the original song and gave Lyta more exposure. Later same year he released the Afrobeat track “Worry” also produced by Killertunes.

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has tackled the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, for linking him to his arrest in Anambra State years back.

Mr El-Rufai, at an interactive session organised by Arewa Joint Committee in Kaduna on Monday, claimed to have been detained nine years ago in Anambra for 48 hours on the orders of Mr Obi, the then governor of the state.

“In 2013, I went to Anambra State as an official of the APC to witness the bye-election for governorship. Your next guest, Peter Obi, as governor, got me arrested and detained for 48 hours in my hotel room,” the Kaduna governor claimed.

Now as a sitting governor, Mr El-Rufai said he has all the security power to deal with the LP candidate but he would not do so because of his northern background.

Mr Obi was also among the dignitaries who spoke at the event.

In his defence, the former Anambra governor described the governor’s comment as a reckless one which should not have been made in the public space.

“What His Excellency, Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai said about me has been brought to my attention. I believe that as we grow older and are saddled with more responsibilities, we are expected to become circumspect in our thinking and avoid recklessness in our speeches and utterances.

“How does the circumstance he referred to relate to bigotry, to warrant such a label?

“All I do for people like El-Rufai is to pray for them and encourage them to concentrate on doing those things that will better the lots of Nigerians rather than engage in hate speeches that will divide and destroy the country,” he fired back.

Mr Obi said it was impossible for him at the time to order agents of the State Security Service (SSS) from Abuja to arrest Mr El-Rufai.

“The police commissioner that was there then was from Adamawa State, and the AIG was from Nasarawa. The GMD that was planning for that election was from Kano. There’s no way I could have done that.

“My chairman, I never asked anyone to arrest you. As Governor of Anambra State, I have the first APC best policeman in Nigeria, and he is from Kano, so where will I give the order and tell a man who lives in my house every day that I want to deal with his people, and he will say yes?”

“I was in APGA during the elections in 2010 (2013), the ruling party was PDP, how can I instruct the PDP in Abuja to detain anybody, even me as state governor was detained in my own local government,” Mr Obi said.

The EU Council has partially suspended the EU visa waiver agreement with Vanuatu. This means that all Vanuatu citizens with a passport issued after 25 May 2015 are no longer eligible for visa-free travel to Europe.

As a consequence, citizens of Vanuatu will not be eligible for ETIAS for Europe, the new visa waiver to be introduced in November 2023.

The European Union is concerned about security risks associated with Vanuatu’s investor citizenship (also known as golden passport) schemes.

The way Vanuatu citizens travel to Europe will change: Vanuatu passport holders will no longer be able to visit Schengen countries without a visa, even for short stays.

WHY VANUATU WAS REMOVED FROM THE EU VISA-EXEMPT LIST

In 2016, Vanuatu introduced 2 Citizenship by Investment programmes, the Vanuatu Development Support Programme (VDSP) and the Vanuatu Contribution Programme (VCP).

These ‘golden passport’ schemes allow foreign citizens to obtain Vanuatu citizenship in exchange for a minimum 130,000 USD investment. The Vanuatu passport, in turn, allows visa-free access to the EU.

The scheme first came under EU scrutiny in 2019 for not meeting obligatory due diligence controls to ensure that participants were not engaged in fraudulent or criminal activity.

As the authorities of Vanuatu failed to make the required changes to the citizenship investment schemes, the EU Commission proposed the suspension of visa-free entry.

The EU Commission announced its proposal to suspend the visa waiver agreement with Vanuatu in a press release on January 12, 2022.

The EU Council studied the proposal and made the final decision on suspending the visa waiver agreements with Vanuatu.

Vanuatu will be given 2 months notice from the date of publication of the resolution in the Official Journal.

EU SECURITY RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH VANUATU’S CITIZENSHIP PROGRAMME

The EU commission has specified the reasons why visa-free travel for Vanuatu citizens will be suspended.

• Vanuatu citizenship has been granted to individuals on the Interpol database
• Average processing times are too short to allow for sufficient screening
• Very low application rejection rates, only one rejection up to 2020
• Successful applications include those from countries that require a visa for Europe

These security failures mean that people who would normally need a visa for Europe could avoid Schengen visa processing by travelling with the Vanuatu passport. This posed a security risk for the EU.

In addition, the EU points out that visa-free access to Europe was being promoted as one of the benefits of Vanuatu citizenship, and was used to attract foreign investors to the golden passport scheme.

WHO DOES THE EU VISA WAIVER AGREEMENT SUSPENSION FOR VANUATU APPLY TO?

The suspension of visa-free travel from Vanuatu to the EU applies to ordinary passports issued from May 25, 2015. It is at this time that Vanuatu began issuing a large number of passports to foreign investors.

Anyone with a Vanuatu passport issued on or after this date will need to apply for a visa to visit EU member states.

HOW LONG WILL THE EU VISA WAIVER AGREEMENT WITH VANUATU BE SUSPENDED?

The suspension will remain in place until the security concerns are eliminated or reduced.

The EU will monitor the situation and, if the suspension is no longer necessary, it will be lifted. On the other hand, Vanuatu could be permanently moved to the list of visa-required countries for Europe if improvements are not made.

NEW VISA REQUIREMENTS TO TRAVEL TO EUROPE FROM VANUATU

Vanuatu passport holders will face new visa requirements for Europe under this suspension. The Vanuatu passport visa-free countries list will be reduced, as all 27 EU nations will be removed.

Travellers will need to get a visa to travel to Europe with a Vanuatu passport, even for short stays.

VANUATU PASSPORT WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE ETIAS VISA WAIVER

Citizens of Vanuatu were due to become eligible for ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System). The electronic visa waiver system will be introduced for visa-exempt travel to the Schengen Area in November 2023.

The ETIAS application will allow eligible passport holders to obtain travel authorisation for Europe online. Travellers will not have to visit an embassy or consulate to apply in person.

ETIAS will not be available to Vanuatu passport holders as the visa waiver agreement is being suspended. Instead, Vanuatu citizens will need to get a visa before visiting a country in the Schengen Area. This will apply to all lengths and purposes of stay.

To obtain a Schengen visa, citizens of Vanuatu will need to attend an appointment at the relevant embassy or consulate to present the application form and various supporting documents.

THE HISTORY OF EU-VANUATU RELATIONS

Since the Republic of Vanuatu was founded in 1980 and gained its independence from France and the United Kingdom, it has become a member of both the United Nations and the Commonwealth of Nations, largely composed of former territories of the UK.

A visa waiver agreement between the European Union and the Republic of Vanuatu was first signed in April 2015, permitting citizens of Vanuatu to travel to Schengen countries for short stays without the need to hold a valid visa.

However, in December 2017, Vanuatu appeared on an EU list of non-cooperative tax jurisdictions which were suspected to be at risk of money laundering, financing terrorism, or promoting tax evasion.

While the list was not ultimately approved by the European Parliament, this was the first sign that Vanuatu was in danger of losing its EU visa waiver status.

Godspower Mathew, a Nigerian cook, broke down in tears recently.

The man breathed fresh air after Chief Magistrate B.O. Osunsanmi of the Samuel Ilori Court, Ogbà Lagos, ordered his release after three years in remand.

Mathew and three others were arraigned in 2019 on counts of conspiracy and theft.

While the other defendants enjoyed bail, Mathew could not perfect his bail conditions and was remanded in the Kirikiri Medium Custodial Centre.

At the resumption of trial on Thursday, the court noted that the matter had been continuously adjourned since 2019.

The defence counsel asked the court to strike out the case and release the defendant, as the prosecution had not done its job.

Giving her ruling on the application, Chief Magistrate Osunsanmi noted that the matter had long been delayed by the failure of the prosecution.

She said, “The defence counsel has repeatedly asked that the case be struck out. The case is hereby struck out for lack of diligent prosecution. The defendant is hereby discharged.”

Our correspondent observed as Mathew broke down in tears while his relatives consoled him.

It was gathered that the complainant, a politician, never showed up in court while the case dragged on since 2019.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Mathew was a cook for the complainant, while the three other defendants were also house helpers.

The complainant was said to have reported a theft of his gold to the police, as Mathew and other workers were arrested.

A source told our correspondent that the complainant had relocated abroad.

“That’s why he has not been coming; the prosecution and the other lawyer did not want to mention that because they know it means there is no future for the case. No IPO has also been coming,” the source added.

The disadvantages facing women and girls are a major source of inequality. All too often, women and girls are discriminated against in health, education, political representation, labour market, etc.—with negative consequences for development of their capabilities and their freedom of choice.

The Gender Inequality Index is an inequality index. It measures gender inequalities in three important aspects of human development—reproductive health, measured by maternal mortality ratio and adolescent birth rates; empowerment, measured by proportion of parliamentary seats occupied by females and proportion of adult females and males aged 25 years and older with at least some secondary education; and economic status, expressed as labour market participation and measured by labour force participation rate of female and male populations aged 15 years and older.

The Index is built on the same framework as the IHDI (Inequality-adjusted Human Development Index) —to better expose differences in the distribution of achievements between women and men. It measures the human development costs of gender inequality. Thus the higher the GII value the more disparities between females and males and the more loss to human development.

The Gender Inequality Index sheds new light on the position of women in 160 countries; it yields insights in gender gaps in major areas of human development. The component indicators highlight areas in need of critical policy intervention and it stimulates proactive thinking and public policy to overcome systematic disadvantages of women.

This years Gender Inequality Index report by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has shown the worst performing countries in gender equality.

The report rankee 189 countries on their ability to close the gender gap – making sure women are not held back – in four key areas: health and survival, education, politics and economic equality.

With 6 countries, West Africa is the worst performing region in gender inequality in Africa, followed by central Africa, 3 countries. Southern Africa had just one representative in the list ‘Malawi’. while East Africa had no representative at all which ultimately means that women are not held back in the region.

African Regions with the least gender equality gap include East and Southern Africa.

Chad is the worst performing country in Africa in terms of gender equality making them the most gender unequal country in Africa, they are closely followed by Mali, Central African Republic, Ivory Coast and Liberia.
