Strike: UNILAG Postpones “Indefinitely†2017 Post-UTME Screening by Unilagqueen(f) : 1:06 pm |
The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has announced that it has postponed indefinitely its Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (Post-UTME) earlier scheduled for Sept. 18 to Sept. 22. The announcement was made in a statement issued by the institution’s Registrar and Secretary to Council, Dr Taiwo Ipaye, in Lagos on Tuesday, September 12, 2017. He however said that a new date for the screening would be announced later on the university’s website.
The postponement is coming on the heels of the indefinite strike by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of non-teaching staff of universities. JAC comprises of members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) and NAAT. Members of the various labour unions of universities were agitating the non-implementation of the agreement it entered into with the Federal Government in 2009. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), an umbrella body of all university lecturers in the country, is currently on strike over the federal government’s failure to fulfil its 2009/2013 agreement with the union.
The union embarked on the strike on August 13 over issues of poor funding, welfare of its members and the failure of the federal government to honour aspects of past agreements it had with its members. Meanwhile, the striking university lecturers have recently agreed to consider the federal government’s offer and suspend their strike.
