The Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, has told accountants working with the state government to strengthen the state’s financial base.

The governor spoke on Monday at the seventh annual lecture of the Lagos State Public Service chapter of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria in Ikeja.

He said it was the wish of the government to provide more infrastructure to residents of the state, noting that government could not do it without requisite funds.

“As accountants in the state public service, you have a role to play. Part of your responsibility to achieving sustainable development is to ensure that the financial base of the state is strengthened in order to execute infrastructural projects that are vital to economic growth,” he said.

However, Ambode said the need to identify and exploit the untapped potential of the Lagos economy had become imperative.

The governor said the government was currently executing projects that would transform the landscape in the eastern and western areas of the state to generate tourism revenues, adding that his administration was also creating infrastructure to support the entertainment industry.

The ICAN President, Mallam Muhamadu Zakari, represented by Dr Innocent Okwuosa, urged other states to make sustainable development policies to revive the nation’s economy.

The state public service ICAN Chairman, Mr. Hakeem Tairu, appealed to Ambode to approve a new designation of finance and account status as practised at the federal level for accountants in the state public service.
