Nigerian singer, Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington, recently raised concerning health issues about President-elect Bola Tinubu, sparking heated debate amongst his fan-base and Nigerians in general.

In a comparative analysis between President Muhammadu Buhari and Tinubu, Speedy, as he is fondly called, voiced his worry that Nigerian citizens would suffer a great deal under a president with ongoing severe health-related problems. He questioned what Nigerians have to show for Buhari’s term in office, considering his fresher and better health, thus displaying a major preoccupation with the topic of health, in the Nigerian political landscape.

It is no surprise then that Speed Darlington’s comments caused a ruckus in the media space, as health has always been a key factor in determining a candidate’s chance of winning any election. Previous presidents, such as Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, were stricken by scandal due to their declining health as they took up office. It is this incident that may have stoked Speed’s fear of having a leader who is even sicker, if Bola Tinubu succeeds in the upcoming election.

Although some Nigerians may agree with Speed Darlington’s comments, on the concept of health being a major determine of success in a leader. Others, may argue that physical health should not be the basis for judging a leader’s potential for success.
