Two fishermen have been arrested by men of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for allegedly attempting to smuggle 120 jerry-cans of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to the Benin Republic.

Igbere TV learnt that the suspects Jebleh Taiwo and Jebleh Abiodun were arrested at Gberefu Beach which is a fishing settlement in Badagry at the weekend.

It was also learnt that the suspects had loaded the products into a wooden boat which was also impounded by the operatives and its outboard engine seized.

While parading the suspects at the weekend, NSCDC Lagos Commandant, Fasiu Adeyinka said that criminals along riverine communities were devising new ways following the closure of the land border including the use of fishing boats.

Adeyinka said smugglers who were short of supply following government directives to stop the sale of petrol to filling stations along border communities, resorted to buying from areas of supply and shipping them to fishing settlements for onward movement to the French country.

Based on this discovery, the Commandant said operatives were detailed to be on lookout for smugglers using these tactics and surveillance paid off within days of intensive monitoring.

“On Friday, February 14, operatives of the command attached to Badagry Division who were on patrol along Gberefu Beach intercepted a boat with two persons in it.

“On the spot search of the boat revealed that the suspects who identified themselves as Jebleh Taiwo, 20, and Jebleh Abiodun, 30, carried 120 Jerry cans of 25 litres each, filled with petrol that was carefully concealed under fishing nets.

“During interrogation, the suspects confessed they were contracted to ferry the products to the Seme border by one Chief, from where the products will be moved into Benin Republic.

“They also confessed that the owner of the product bought the fuel from a petrol station in the area. They claimed that they borrowed the boat from a neighbour at Ajido beach,” he said.

The Commandant urged Badagry residents to warn their people against smuggling because it was negatively affecting the economy.

In their confessional statements, the suspects said Chief agreed to pay then N500 per keg smuggled out, adding that they would have made N60,000 if they succeeded with ferrying the 120 jerry-cans.

CP Okon also commended ABN TV for its fairness and objectivity in news reportage, calling on others to emulate them.

“I have been following ABN TV for some time now. Let me be a bit modest. Their reportage of the activities of this police command is well noted. And I cherish their balanced investigative reports and I take time to read their report about the command. I commend you for that and urge you to keep it up” he said.

He also expressed the readiness of the command under his leadership to reduce criminal activities to the barest minimum and ensure that indigenes and residents sleep with their eyes closed.

In his comment, Director ABN TV, Ifeanyi Okali said the medium will continue to offer the needed support to the command especially in reporting its activities to enable the public to know their efforts in controlling crime in the state.

Muyiwa Otuyalo,  Damilola Otuyalo

60-year-old fish-farmer, Muyiwa Otuyalo has been arrested for attempting to smuggle a substance believed to be hard drug for his son, Damilola Otuyalo, who is currently in the custody of the EFCC in its Ibadan zonal office.

According to reports, the senior Otuyalo was at the EFCC office on Monday February 17th, supposedly to visit his son. However,  while discussing with the son, an officer noticed that he brought out a sachet of tablets and handed it to his detained son.

The substance was seized and when examined by an in-house nurse, it was discovered to be Rohypnol, a tranquilizer used under strict prescription for treatment of severe insomnia and assist in anesthesia. The drug is said to possess high sedative effect and is rarely used except when prescribed by licensed medical officers.

The junior Otuyalo was recently arrested after a criminal case of money laundering was detected in the United Kingdom and reported against him.

The case which involved £45,000 was a fragment of a wider one involving about £500,000 for which he has been declared wanted by the London’s Metropolitan Police.

He had been on the wanted list of the International Police, Interpol, before the petition was filed at the EFCC, Ibadan zonal office.

English radio and television presenter, Caroline Flack has been found dead after she took her life in her London flat three weeks before she was due in court for an alleged assault on her boyfriend, Lewis Burton.

A family statement on Saturday said, “We can confirm that our Caroline passed away today on the 15th February.

“We would ask that the press both respect the privacy of the family at this difficult time.”

A lawyer for the Flack family confirmed that the former Love Island host took her own life and was found dead in her East London flat on Saturday.

It was also reported that the TV presenter, aged 40, took her own life after a worried friend who was staying with her, went to the shops, leaving her alone at her London flat.

When the friend arrived back, she was unable to go in. The producer friend then called Flack’s father Ian who gained entry to the flat and found the star’s lifeless body.

The 40-year-old TV had stepped down from her TV work after being arrested and charged with assault in December. She was due to go on trial for allegedly attacking her boyfriend Lewis Burton with a lamp at her flat in Islington, north London, on 12 December, with her court hearing scheduled for March 4.

In a statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, an ITV spokesperson said, “Everybody at Love Island and ITV is shocked and saddened by this desperately sad news. Caroline was a much-loved member of the Love Island team and our sincere thoughts and condolences are with her family and friends.”

Following her death, Flack’s management have criticised prosecutors over what they called a “show trial” despite her boyfriend saying he did not want to press charge

Francis Ridley, of Money Talent Management, said: “In recent months Caroline had been under huge pressure because of an ongoing case and potential trial which has been well reported.

“The Crown Prosecution Service pursued this when they knew not only how very vulnerable Caroline was but also that the alleged victim did not support the prosecution and had disputed the CPS version of events.

“The CPS should look at themselves today and how they pursued a show trial that was not only without merit but not in the public interest. And ultimately resulted in significant distress to Caroline.”

In response, the CPS said its “deepest sympathies go to the family and friends of Caroline Flack”.

“Given the tragic circumstances, we will not comment on the specifics of this case at this stage,” a spokesperson added.

Flack’s last post on Instagram was a collage of pictures, showing her playing with her dog, Ruby on Thursday.

The next day, her boyfriend Lewis Burton posted a picture of him and Flack on Instagram and wrote: ‘Happy Valentine’s… Love You’

Caroline Flack began her career in the comedy series Bo’ Selecta! in 2002 and went on to present shows on the ITV network such as The Xtra Factor. Flack began presenting the dating reality series Love Island in 2015, which she became well known for.

The two doctors suspended over misconduct

Two doctors have been suspended for engaging in professional misconduct and infamous practice that led to the death of two people.

Both doctors, Charles Ikeji and Terhemba Lan, will not be able to practise medicine from February 18 for six months, ruled a tribunal of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, which regulates the practice and teaching of medicine and dentistry. 

The tribunal heard Ikeji, in practice since 1984, operated on a 60-year-old hypertensive patient using ketamine, a drug used to induce sleep during surgery but cautioned against in cases of high blood pressure. 

The patient died and he was suspended by an investigation panel of the council in May 2019. The tribunal found him guilty on four counts—that he “exhibited incompetence in the way he managed the patient”, “failed to do all that was necessary for the patient” and “failed to conduct his medical duty” in accordance with standards. 

The tribunal also found Lan, almost 20 years a doctor, guilty on four counts of misconduct. Lan was investigated by a panel of the council and suspended last July for leaving his hospital “open, knowing there was no competent person” to oversee the hospital in his absence. 

Lan was unavailable on 29 March 2018 at his private clinic-and-maternity practice in Bwari when a patient visited and his absence “enabled a person not registered as a medical doctor to attend to a patient in your care,” the tribunal said. 

In the absence of any doctor overseeing the hospital, a community health worker attended to the patient—and even signed a form referring the patient to National Hospital and also a certificate of death when the patient died.

President Muhammadu Buhari has reorganised the Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

This new move sees him replace Barr Joy Nunieh with Professor Kemebradikumo Pondei, as Acting Managing Director.

The President also increased the number of the committee from three to five persons, including Dr Cairo Ojougboh, Ag. Executive Director (Projects); Mr Ibanga Bassey Etang, Ag. Executive Director (Finance and Administration); Mrs Caroline Nagbo (Member); and Cecilia Bukola Akintomide, OON, a former Vice President with African Development Bank, (Member).

Gov Kayode Fayemi

Ekiti State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Wale Fapohunda, said on Wednesday that the state governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, had approved the translation of laws in Ekiti State into Yoruba Language.

Fapohunda said the laws to be translated included the bill for the establishment of Amotekun Corps and Ekiti State Security Network Agency which was passed into law on Friday by the state House of Assembly and at present awaiting the assent of the governor.

The AG, in a statement in Ado Ekiti, said, “Ekiti State Security Network Agency Bill affects the daily lives of the people of Ekiti State, especially those in our rural communities. It, therefore, follows that this is one legislation that all of our people need to understand.

“In furtherance of the commitment of the Fayemi administration to its citizens’ active participation in governance, Mr Governor has approved the translation of laws of Ekiti State into Yoruba Language.

“Given the volumes of the laws of Ekiti State, the translation will be implemented in phases. The first phase will include laws that have a direct impact on the daily reality of our people,” he said.

According to Fapohunda, some of the laws that will be translated immediately will include Sustainable Development Goals Law, Ekiti State, 2019; Ekiti State Property Protection (Anti- Land Grabbing) Law 2019; Ekiti State Gender-Based Violence (Prohibition) Law 2019, and Ekiti State (Transition) Law, 2019.

On how the laws will be translated, the AG said, “There are many qualified academics in the Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti who are specialised in Yoruba Language. We will work with them.”

Fapohunda also stated that some of the policy documents of the Ministry of Justice like the Ekiti State Charter for Victims of Crime; Directive on Non-discontinuance of Criminal Matters, Additional Measures in aid of Prosecution of Sexual Violence would also be translated into the Yoruba Language.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice and Solicitor General, Ekiti State, Lawrence Ojo, while commenting on the development, said, “Ekiti State Ministry of Justice will be recording another first in Nigeria”.

Ojo said there had been talks over the years, especially in lawyers’ conferences and meetings, on the need to translate laws into local Nigerian languages, but little progress had been made, adding, “With Ekiti State breaking the ice, it is envisaged that more states will follow.”

Lagos state Police PRO, Dolapo Badmos, has revealed that Police officers have no right to check an individual’s mobile phone for no reason.

In a recent interview with LIB, Dolapo Badmos when asked the difference between stop and search and checking people’s phone which is right and which is wrong stated that;

‘Your phone is private, it’s your private property because people do a lot of private stuffs on their mobile phones so it’s wrong. Police officers have no right to do that except there is a reasonable ground to do so’.

Nollywood actress Tonto Dikeh’s ex-husband, Olakunle Churchill went back in time to recall his childhood memories.

Wife of RCCG General Overseer, Pastor Folu Adeboye, has advised women to teach their children how to cook.

Two days ago, Pastor Adeboye stirred up a conversation on Twitter after he advised his sons not to marry any woman who cannot cook.

Many interpreted his message to mean that it is imperative for a woman who intends to get married to learn how to cook. The clergyman did not state if it was also important for an intending husband to learn how to cook.

However, his wife, Foluke Adeboye, while preaching at a church programme on Wednesday February 19th advised women to ensure they teach their children which is male and female, how to cook.

She stated that women should ensure they teach their children how to cook so they do not go about eating at restautants everyday of their live.

As anointed women, we must teach our children to cook, they can’t keep eating at a restaurant everyday of their live. Women teach your children to cook & eat at home, they can’t eat out all the time – Pastor Mrs Folu Adeboye

Reacting to the tweet from the church programme quoting his wife, Pastor Adeboye shared a bible passage where it was stated that the woman rises up to give food to her household and assign tasks to her maid.
