A Niger Delta militant group, Niger Delta Revolutionary Crusaders, NDRC, has threatened to resume hostilities in 14 days if the Federal Government disregarded its five-point demand, including inauguration of a panel to negotiate with the Pan Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF.

NDRC in a statement made available to the media by its spokesperson, WOI Izon-Ebi said: “After 14 days, if these very important concerns are not addressed, we shall have no choice but to call off our ceasefire and start hostilities because we only respected the plea of our eminent royal fathers, chiefs and leaders of the Niger Delta region to give room for sincere dialogue in finding a lasting solution to the Niger Delta question.

“The federal government should as a matter of urgency constitute a federal government delegation to liaise with PANDEF to start implementing all demands.

“Oloibiri should be a priority of development like the Federal Capital Territory because that is the first place oil was discovered in commercial quantity in 1959, but after sucking the oil dry, the community called Oloibiri is in shambles. No Niger Delta youth of this 21st century that happens to visit Oloibiri would accept the current reality of things in the Niger Delta.

“The Vice President that is saddled with the affairs of the Niger Delta should immediately call SPDC to order as it would annoy you to note how SPDC is enslaving Odoh family (the host family to Opomu West drilling location, since 1971 to date, a dime has not been given to the owners of the land for the destruction of their ancestral fishing lake).

“This issue should be addressed immediately as Akologben, Brass creek manifold and Benisede/Akonu/Tunu gas pipeline would be our first casualty.

“The good and peace- loving people of Gbaramatu kingdom have suffered too much and are currently under siege, and we, the NDRC and the 21st century agitators will not accept this type of inhuman treatment meted out on the people of Gbaramatu kingdom.

“It will not be accepted any more where they are now subjected to raising their hands before getting to their community. How can the federal government justify the presence of four military house boats surrounding Oporoza, the traditional headquarters of Gbaramatu kingdom? Army houseboats, Navy houseboats, Air force houseboats and Joint Task Force houseboats. The federal government should immediately withdraw all military personnel and houseboats from Gbaramatu kingdom.

“The lack of funds to properly address and implement the Presidential Amnesty Programme, PAP, which has seen amnesty beneficiaries sent back from their various institutions of study overseas would not be accepted any longer.”

The agitators noted that they had tremendous respect for the “Chairman of the Federal Government’s delegation, who happens to be a pastor, professor of law and Vice President of Nigeria, Prof Yemi Osinbanjo. His truthfulness to have accepted the true reality of the plight of the Niger Deltans makes us to respect our ceasefire, but we have come to realize that the Federal Government is not sincere.

“The UNEP report implementation was just a ploy to persuade the people of Ogoni and fool the international community that the Federal Government is fully committed to solving the Niger Delta question, their main aim is to suck the oil dry as was done in Oloibiri.

“The Niger Delta Revolutionary Crusaders and these 21st century agitators will make sure that all oil wells are shut down as was done in Ogoni land.

“We urge the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, who is now saddled with the affairs of the Niger Delta to use his integrity as a true leader to save this situation because the Niger Delta youths of this 21st century would no longer be fooled anymore.”

SPECIAL STATEMENT FROM THE STATE GOVERNMENT OF OSUN
(AN INQUEST INTO SENATOR ADELEKE'S DEATH)

We are still in shock and great pain over the transition of our friend, associate and brother, Senator Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke.  He was a prominent son of our state and its first democratically elected Governor. Until his death, he was the senator representing Osun West in the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He was an astute and colourful politician and a generous personality. He was gregarious, enthusiastic and full of life and zest. His death is therefore shocking and totally unexpected.
The State Government of Osun had intended to give him a befitting state burial which he rightly deserved and which the state had prepared to undertake.
Regrettably, however, the enemies of the state, through brigandage, violence and evil machinations, created an atmosphere of fear and terror in the minds of our citizenry and friends throughout the federation. Immediately the news of his demise filtered in, a band of vagabonds, crying more than the bereaved, took to the streets, looting and wreaking havoc. Journalists were roughened and their equipment damaged. Important dignitaries that came for the burial were equally molested by these thugs. 
Senator Adeleke was a man of peace. He preached peace and lived it through his life. He left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) because he could not stand violence. This was after he was beaten up by some leaders of the PDP during a meeting in a hotel in Osogbo.
It is a profound irony and most unfortunate therefore that a few disgruntled elements purporting to protest his death desecrated his funeral with violence and attacks on innocent persons. They dishonoured him and did his memory a great disservice by keeping his friends, political associates and well-wishers away from his burial.
The best we could do in the circumstance was to declare three days of mourning throughout the state and fly national, state and our party’s flags at half-mast in his honour.
In the light of this, the State Government of Osun, using the instrumentality of the law, is setting up an inquest to unravel the circumstances of this unfortunate and sad incident, in order to put the record straight on his death.
We continue to mourn the untimely death of Senator Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke. He is irreplaceable in our hearts.  We commiserate with his family, the good people of Ede, associates, friends, constituents and generality of our people on the passage of this patriot. As we pray for the repose of his soul, we equally pray for the strength to bear this heavy loss.

For stabbing Mrs. Stella Avwenayerhe, the wife of his flatmate to death with a kitchen knife, an Ughelli, Delta State, High Court yesterday sentenced one Mr. Narebor Stephen Donbrapade to death by hanging.

Justice F. O. Ohwo, in suit number UHC/21c/13, convicted Donbrapade on a one-count charge of murder.

The accused, a 49-year-old administrative staff of the Delta State Judiciary from Esama town in Bomadi Council, on or about January 31, 2013, at Otobor Street, Ughelli, murdered one Mrs. Avwenayerhe, an offence punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code Cap C.21, Volume 1, Laws of Delta State, 2006.

Donbrapade, popularly called “Honourable,” shares a room in a three bedroom flat with the husband of the deceased. However, on the fateful day, the accused and the victim were said to have had a minor quarrel after he stepped on the rug in the sitting room without removing his shoes.

Determined to teach his co-flatmate’s wife a lesson for having the audacity to challenge him, the accused was reported to have dashed into his room, only to appear with a knife and stabbed the deceased on the chest.

She was rushed to the Ughelli Central Hospital by neighbours who came to her rescue, and was confirmed dead on arrival by doctors. In his defence, the accused, who pleaded not guilty, alleged that some unidentified hoodlums in the area stabbed the victim to death.

Justice Ohwo faulted the accused, who he described as not a witness of truth, and believed the evidences of the four prosecution witnesses.

The trial Judge further ruled that prosecution proved beyond all reasonable doubt the essential ingredients of the offence of murder against the accused person and accordingly sentenced him to death by hanging.
