The President of African Development Bank (AfDB), Dr Akinwumi Adesina, has been named the 2017 World Food Prize Laureate.

Adesina, whose name was selected on Monday in Washington, D.C, becomes the 46th recipient and the sixth African to be honoured.

The award ceremony will take place October 19.

Announcing the new Laureate, Ambassador Kenneth Quinn, the President of the World Food Prize Foundation, described Adesina as “someone who grew out of poverty, but whose life mission is to lift up millions of people out of poverty’’.

The announcement by Quinn was made at a ceremony held at the US department of agriculture, which was attended by US secretary of agriculture Sonny Perdue.

The prestigious $250,000 prize is given annually to a person who has worked to advance human development by “improving the quality, quantity or availability of food in the world”.

Over a 31-year existence, the award has become known as the “Nobel Prize’’ for Food and Agriculture.

 

 

Since its founding in 1986, the Prize has honoured 45 individuals for their outstanding contributions to food security around the world.

In attendance were some past awardees, Nigeria’s former minister of finance, Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, Nigeria’s acting ambassador to the US and chargé d‘affaires, Hakeem Balogun.

Adesina was the Nigerian Minister of Agriculture under the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

A man who could be referred to as the ‘most fruitful man in Africa’, Mustafa Magambo Mutone, has cried out to the government for financial support.

The Ugandan, who is 65 years old is a proud father of 176 children, 90 grandchildren. He has 13 wives and 10 girlfriends.

New Vision reports that Mustafa, who is expecting more children, is seeking government’s help in order to train some of his 176 children.

“I have tried to feed my 13 wives and over 170 children and it is not easy. I request the government to at least sponsor 30 of my children in secondary schools and tertiary institutions,” Mustafa, a businessman and a resident of Kyaterekera trading centre in Kagadi district, said.

In a bid to cut down expenses and even make more money while at it, Mustafa who has over 40 children in primary school, is planning to establish his own nursery and primary school.

He also said he has about 10 children in the universities (Makerere, Mbarara and Kyambogo), most of them on private sponsorship.

Mustafa has five pairs of twins among his children. His number of children will hit 180 towards the end of the year when six of his wives who are pregnant, deliver.

In a recent interview, Mustafa explained that he is still willing and intending to marry more wives who will bear him more children. This he does instead of smoking and drinking.

“Two of my wives who gave birth to twins are in Kampala and Isingiro, working as midwives, while another two — Haniffer Kabasomi and Jane Tuhaise — work as nurses. My youngest wife is 25, and the eldest is 50, but I had about 10 girlfriends before I married officially and they all delivered the same year,” Mustafa said.

According to him, his first born child is 49 years old, while the youngest are four-year-old twins. He further noted that he has over 90 grandchildren and he has a special book where he records every child born whether within the country or outside, because he has some wives in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, and Burundi.

He said one of the challenges he faces is the long distance as some of his women live in different parts of the country.

‘’I receive about 10 calls every day from different wives who want attention but I cannot be everywhere. I have seven wives in Kagadi alone. I do not have any challenge of supporting them because some of them support themselves since they work,” Mustafa said.

“In other words, Imo State can hardly be talked about without the mention of Mbaise. Mbaise people are a source of pride to us and adequately play a key role in the development of the state.

“In the last election, I almost lost the election because of the result they churned out from Mbaise. I equally know that Mbaise people voted for me but something happened along the line.

“Yet, Mbaise is the place I have built a university, factory, schools, hospitals, roads, and having the highest number of beneficiaries of the free education programme.

“I took oath to serve the whole of Imo people. I am not sectional and for that oath, I have been faithful to it. I am not a sectional leader and will never be. Mbaise will get the best from this government.

“All the projects I have in Mbaise will be completed before I leave. Politically, I will always work with the Mbaise people. Mbaise people should start resisting the idea of Abuja selecting candidates for them for political offices.

“Hon. Nnanna Igbokwe is a young man that has the support of his people. Some politicians talk only about party, while the wise ones talk about people in the party, as you cannot have a cathedral without a Bishop.

“There are three groups of Imo people. People who love one another and believe in the progress of the State; people who love themselves and believe in the progress of themselves and finally, the docile ones who sit on the fence and fall to any group that favours them.

“Nnanna Igbokwe belongs to the group who love one another and believes in the progress of the State.

“Igbokwe, you are doing very well, you have remained consistent. We will support you and coming with Ndi eze shows your humility and unity of purpose.

“I want to thank you and request of you to join hands with those who think alike, be in that family. I will advise you to join people who share the same ideology with you.”

The Spanish Government today, Tuesday deported 23 Nigerians for committing various offences in the country, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

They were deported barely five days after 34 Nigerians were sent home from six European countries for committing immigration-related offences. Reports suggests that 34 Nigerians were jointly deported by six European countries on June 22 for committing immigration-related offences.

The deportees were sent back home from Switzerland, Germany, Iceland, Austria, Belgium and Hungary. It was also gathered that the new set of deportees arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMlA) Lagos, at about 6.40 a.m on Tuesday.

The new deportees, comprising 21 males and two females, were brought back in a privilege style aircraft with registration number EC-IZO. DSP Joseph Alabi, the spokesman of the Lagos Airport Police Command, confirmed the development.

Alabi said that the deportees were received by officers of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and the Police. He said that others also on ground to receive them were officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

According to him, 9 of the deportees, who were deported for drug-related offences, were handed over to the NDLEA. He said that two others, who were deported for criminal offences, were handed over to the police.

Alabi said that the remaining 12 deportees, accused of breaching the country’s immigration rules, were profiled and allowed to go to their respective destinations.
