Days after curfew was imposed to maintain law and order in Mali, the National Committee for the Salvation of the People (CNSP), Mali’s new governing body established by the military leaders after the recent coup on Friday has eased the curfew.
This was contained in CNSP communique signed by Col.-Maj. Ismael Wague, as cited by the Journal du Mali news outlet.
The communique read; “The National Committee for the Salvation of the People is informing about the easing of the curfew.
“Now, it is in effect from 0.00 a.m. to 5.00 a.m. [00:00 to 05:00 GMT],’’ Wague said.
Recall that the curfew was introduced on Wednesday and was in effect from 9.00 p.m. to 5.00 a.m.
The coup started on Tuesday at the Kati military base near the Malian capital of Bamako.
The rebels detained President Ibrahim Keita, Prime Minister Boubou Cisse and some other senior government officials.
Keita then announced his resignation and dissolution of parliament.
The rebel leaders established the CNSP, which closed the borders and imposed the curfew.
The M5-RFP movement, which led months-long anti-government protests that preceded the coup, has promised to cooperate with the military in organising the transition period.

Reports revealed that discussions between West African mediators and Mali’s military junta ended in disagreement as there was no decision taken on the make-up of a transitional government.
Recall that former president of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan led a delegation dispatched by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) which arrived Mali on Saturday to negotiate the release of President Ibrahim Keita and the restoration of constitutional government.
The military junta led by Colonel Goita had declared that it wants a military-led transitional body to rule for three years.
According to sources in Mali, discussions held on Monday focused on emergence of new leader and duration of tenure of the new leadership rather than the possibility of reinstating the Presidentâ€.
Jonathan had earlier said they requested and were granted access to Keita.
“President Keita told us that he has resigned. That he was not forced to do so, “Jonathan had said.
“That he does not want to return to politics and that he wants a quick transition to allow the country to return to civilian rule.â€
Meanwhile, the spokesman for the military junta, Ismael Wague said mediators would report to regional heads of state ahead of a summit on Mali this week.
Wague added that the final decision on the interim administration would be decided locally.
“There were discussions on both sides, given that at this stage nothing has been set down, nothing has been decided, and that as far as we are concerned, the final architecture of the transition will be discussed and defined by us,†Wague said.
“Mediators will discuss this with the heads of state so they can lift or at least ease the sanctions. Sanctions are not good for us or the population.â€
Traders in Aba on Wednesday petitioned the Abia State House of Assembly, demanding the sack of Abia State Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Mr. Cosmos Ndukwe over indiscriminate stalls in Ekeoha Shopping Centres.
The petition which was written by “Barr Nwaugo Victor C and Co†on behalf of the traders said Ekeoha Shopping Centre, Aba, is a Shopping Complex envisioned, designed and constructed in blocks of bungalow stores with open space, walkways, fire station, banking hall, car parks, emergency exit points for human and vehicular movements at all relevant periods and even in cases of fire outbreak.
The traders revealed that it is unfortunate that all the aforementioned facilities have been converted into market stalls on the authorization of the Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Rt Hon.Cosmos Ndukwe with the connivance of the current Chairman of Ekeoha Shopping Centre Traders Association, one Mr. Friday Dimiri.
The traders further said that the actions of the Commissioner could lead to mass death of traders and their customers and pleaded with Abia government to intervene immediately.
The petition reads in parts,
“We write on behalf of CONCERNED TRADERS OF EKEOHA SHOPPING CENTRE, ABA represented by Hon. Oriaku Ugochukwu, James Eze, Jona Anayogu and Chukwueke Nwokocha of Ekeoha Shopping Centre.
(1) Ekeoha Shopping Centre, Aba, is a Shopping Complex envisioned, designed and constructed in blocks of bungalow stores with open space, walkways, fire station, banking hall, car parks, emergency exit points for human and vehicular movements at all relevant periods and even in cases of fire outbreak. Unfortunately, and sadly, all the aforementioned facilities have been converted into market stalls on the authorization of the Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Rt Hon.Cosmos Ndukwe with the connivance of the current Chairman of Ekeoha Shopping Centre Traders Association, one Mr. Friday Dimiri.
(2) While it is bad that the Commissioner for Trade and Investment authorized the conversion of such facilities like car park, fire station, driveway, emergency exit ways, and some walkways with the market, it is inquitous, tended to cause mass death of traders and their customers for the said Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Rt Hon. Cosmos Ndukwe, to approve and allocate for construction, two floors of Lock Up Stalls on top of the originally designed and built bungalow blocks of stalls in the said market without the matching beams, pillars, rods and decks, thereby creating three levels of stalls in the said market which was originally designed and constructed as one level block of stalls.
(3) it is interesting to note that the said Commissioner for Trade and Investment and his Ekeoha Shopping Centre Traders Association Chairman, Mt Friday Dimiri, were able to achieve this wicked act of turning “EKEOHA SHOPPING CENTRE †into a death trap with the aid of their security men whom they recruited from the existing Abia State Vigilante Services in amanner likened to that of NAPOLEON in “Animal Farmâ€. The duo also suppress every opposing view at Ekeoha Shopping Centre with the aid of the recruited security men from the Abia State Vigilante Service.
(4) The sins of the said Hon Cosmos Ndukwe and Mr Friday Dimiri are many, indeed, they are legion. These two persons negotiated with the Independent Power Plant Station (Called Ekeoha Power Station), disconnected all stalls in the said market from linkage to EEDC electricity supply and imposed an Independent Power Plant Station on the Traders with very high billing rate collected by them on a daily basis; so much so that the majority of the traders who cannot afford the usage of the independent power plant are not connected to it, yet, are not permitted to connect to EEDC electricity supply thereby throwing the Shopping Centre into deep darkness also as a result of stalls built on the open spaces through which sun rays would have permeated to the walkways into the market.
(5) The said Commissioner for Trade and Investment with his Ekeoha Shopping Centre Traders Association Chairman, Mr Friday Dimiri, unilaterally imposed a high rate stallage and other fees per each stall, by making an increase from Five Thousand Naira to Eight Thousand Naira. When the traders protested, the said Commissioner promised that 10% of the said stallage fees would be remitted back to the traders for maintenance of the market. Regrettably, since 2019 when this regime of fees started under Hon Cosmos Ndukwe, the said Commissioner has neither remitted the said 10% to the traders nor carried out any maintenance work in the market but has also shared proceeds of this 10% with the said Chairman of the Traders Association.
(6) As a result of these mean and wicked acts of Hon. Cosmos Ndukwe and Mr Friday Dimiri, the Shopping Centre is now faced with the following dire predicaments:
(I) Darkness now envelopes the stalls in the said Shopping Centre
(ii) Availability of network for easy communication has become a scarce commodity as air waves have been blocked by the compact nature of the stalls
(iii) In the event of any fire outbreak, firefighters can no longer drive their vehicle into the market to quench the fire
(iv) It has become a daily occurrence to see decked floors in the said Shopping Centre collapse, injuring traders, their customers, and damaging their goods. As a tip, on the 17th of August, 2020, a wing of stalls at Zone 11 of the said Shopping Centre collapsed and caused heavy panic among traders and all those present there then. Other examples abound, Ekeoha Shopping Centre is now a case of One Week, One Collapse of either a stall or wing of stalls.
(8) Ekeoha Shopping Centre was envisioned and built to avert disaster that befell Igbo Traders in 1976 when the Famous Ekeoha market was gutted by fire. Unfortunately today, the dreams of our fathers who envisioned the Shopping Centre and built it as the pride of Aba have been killed on the altar of extortion, greedy acquisition of filthy lucre on the blood of the innocents.
(8) In the circumstances of our Petition, our clients pray the Abia State House of Assembly for the following reliefs namely:
(a) Setting up of an Ad Hoc Commitee of the Abia State House of Assembly made up of men and women with fear of God, respect for humanity and desire for truth to Investigate the contents of our allegations above by hearing from the traders and coming to the said Shopping Centre to see things for themselves.
(b) Suspension of the Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Hon. Cosmos Ndukwe and the Chairman of Ekeoha Shopping Centre Traders Association, Mr Friday Dimiri, pending the completion of investigation by the Ad Hoc Committee to allow traders volunteer information to the said Committee without fear of intimidation from the said Commissioner and the Chairman of Ekeoha Shopping Centre Traders Association by themselves or through their hired men.

Daily Post reports that specialist doctors at the Federal Medical Centre, Yola, have separated two children who were born joined around the abdomen as Siamese twins.
The twins who are both girls and now aged eight months, were born at the Nembe General Hospital in Bayelsa State on December 12, 2019 and were immediately referred to the FMC Yenagoa where they were, in turn, referred to the FMC Yola.
The twins had been flown by the Nigeria Air Force to Yola in January this year but the surgery to remove them was not done till earlier this month.
The FMC Yola Medical Director, Prof Auwal Abubakar, who spoke to newsmen on Saturday during a farewell for the twins and their parents, said the surgery was finally done on August 10. “We were getting set to do the surgery when COVID-19 came. It was a new disease and we were learning to cope with it. Many services at the hospital were suspended and even to get certain consumables was difficult…
“The separation was done on the 10th of August and there was no problem at all. We discharged them from intensive care on the third day. They are fully okay,†said Prof Auwal who led the team for the surgery.
He said it took only three hours for a 48-member team comprising specialist surgeons, anesthetics consultants, nurses, technicians, among others, to do the surgery. “Aided by experience and sophisticated machines, some recently donated by the Nigeria Liquefied Gas Ltd (LNG), we successfully completed the process in just three hours,†he said.
The newly-separated twins are named Grace and Mercy respectively. Their mother, 25-year-old Mrs Ayebaekipreye Ebi, told newsmen that the twins were born through cesarean section and that the complexity of their birth shattered her and her husband, Ralph Raphael, 27. “My immediate reaction was ‘why me’ and I passed out and remained unconscious for three days,†Mrs Ralph said.

Mathias Ometu, the 33-year-old Nigerian-born American man who was arrested while jogging, made his first public appearance on Wednesday September 2.
The USAA employee was arrested on August 25 after police stopped him for “fitting the description†of a family violence suspect they were looking for, even though the victim’s description differed from Ometu’s physical profile according to a body camera footage released on Tuesday September 1.
Recounting his ordeal, Ometu said he was jogging near Interstate 10 and Woodstone Drive in San Antonio, Texas when he noticed a police car slow down by him before speeding past him and turning back around toward him.

He disclosed that he felt targeted by the police who were looking for Darren Smith Jr., who was arrested on an unrelated robbery warrant on Friday. Smith has not been charged in connection with the family violence incident. When police told Ometu they wanted to take him to the apartment complex so the victim would identify him as the suspect, he persisted on remaining where he is.
Ometu said;
“Once those doors close on you, you never know when they’re going to open again.â€
In the bodycam footage officers ask why he won’t give them his information.
‘I’m on a run! Are you serious? I’m not giving you my name, I’m working out,’ Ometu says.
‘Because I’m working out and you’re bothering me. I’m being bothered on a (expletive) normal run,’ Ometu added.
When an officer explains Ometu matches the description of a domestic violence suspect, Ometu said: ‘I don’t care what description. I just want to do my damn run.’
‘Alright then you’re gonna be detained right now for being a suspect of family violence until I figure out who you are,’ the arresting officer says, putting Ometu in handcuffs.
Ometu kicked officers when they handcuffed him and attempted to put him into a patrol car, according to the officers.
The woman who reported the assault arrived to the scene and told police Ometu was the wrong man.
The Insurance Executive however admitted he was aggravated during the incident because he was an innocent man.
He said;
“I was bent forward with two grown men pressing on my back. I was yanked by an officer by my neck, my legs twisted contorted in awkward and uncomfortable positions. I felt each finger the officers pressed into my throat.
“I did not intentionally kick, scratch, or harm any officer. I was guilty before proven innocent.â€
After the lady confirmed Ometu was not her assaulter, two charges of assault against a peace officer were filed against Ometu. Though he was not the suspect police sought, Ometu was still arrested and jailed for two days before posting a $20,000 bond.
His charges were later dropped by District Attorney Joe Gonzales, after he was able to review the video from witnesses and also the body cam footage. Gonzales said Ometu was within his legal right to not identify himself, adding the officers involved were fine with dropping the charges.
He said;
“Neither officer wishes to have him incur any future consequences as a result of this incident. This case is one of competing interests. It is the officer’s duty to investigate and detain a person of interest that may be a suspect in a crime versus a citizen’s right not to disclose their identification where no arrest has been made.â€
Now, Ometu plans to file a civil rights lawsuit. Outside the Bexar County Courthouse Wednesday September 2, with a group of supporters, Ometu said he was punished for invoking his rights.
He said;
“I was physically, emotionally and mentally harmed, and that has to be addressed. Multiple cops either not knowing or ignoring the rights of Texas residents — this has to be addressed.â€

Although San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said Ometu did nothing wrong, he also said that his officers acted appropriately while investigating the domestic violence case. He said Ometu was not under arrest but legally detained.
McManus told newsmen;
“Officers understand that rule that he did not have to [give his name], but the easiest way to have gotten through that issue was if he had said his name, they could have been out of there in minutes … Even though he didn’t give his name, officers still have to investigate, follow through and make sure that this man was not the one who assaulted his ex-wife.â€
However a public defender, Adam Kobs criticized McManus’ take on what should have happened.
Kobs said;
“That’s a problem that not only endorses this type of behavior, that blesses this type of behavior, and change needs to start from the top. If you make a mistake, you do something wrong, you admit it, you apologize.â€

Pizza Hut has announced plans to shut 29 of its 244 UK restaurants, putting around 450 jobs at risk.
The highly-popular restaurant chain said it faced ‘significant disruption’ from the coronavirus pandemic and that the lockdown was so detrimental that ‘sales are not expected to fully bounce back until well into 2021.’
A Pizza Hut Restaurants spokeswoman said: “We are committed to doing the right thing, and in order to secure as many jobs as possible and continue serving our communities, we are working to reach an agreement with our creditors.
“While we are likely to see 29 Hut closures and 450 job losses, any measures we take aim to protect about 5,000 jobs at our remaining 215 restaurants, as well as the longevity of the business.â€
She added: “We understand this is a difficult time for everyone involved.
“We appreciate the support of our business partners and are doing everything we can to help our team members during this process, including speaking with those affected by the consultation.â€
The move is expected not to affect operations or jobs at Pizza Hut Delivery or related franchises.
