Barely six days after an accounting staff with the Nigerian Chronicle, Maurice Archibong, and an Associate Professor at the University of Calabar, David Ugwu, were kidnapped by gunmen in Calabar, a businessman based in the city has also been kidnapped.

According to PUNCH,The businessman, Desmond Oko, was kidnapped at his business premises around Goldie area of the state capital by unidentified gunmen on Tuesday night, adding the kidnappers may have trailed him from the State Housing Estate where he had been shortly before he was kidnapped.

His whereabouts remained unknown as of the time of this report as his abductors, who went away with his Hyundai Accent with registration number YAB 982 JL, had not established contact with his family.

As a result of his kidnap, the inaugural meeting of the Council of Okenwa Ndi Igbo, Calabar, scheduled for Wednesday, which he was to host, was postponed indefinitely.

It was gathered that this was the second time the 55-year-old Desmond Oko would be kidnapped. The first incident happened sometime in 2018 at his home in Goldie.

But it was yet unknown whether his 2018 abductors were those who kidnapped him again in 2020.

Family sources were worried about the fate of Oko as he was said to be hypertensive and diabetic.

The State Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Irene Ugbo, confirmed the incident.

She said, “I am aware that somebody has been kidnapped but I have not been briefed by the anti-kidnapping squad if at all the matter has been reported to the squad.”

Meanwhile, kidnappers of the accounting staff of the Chronicle newspaper, Maurice Archibong, have reportedly contacted members of his family and demanded N15m as a ransom to release him.

Burna Boy’s outfit to the 2020 BRIT awards has got the internet fighting for whether he should be named Nigeria’s drip lord.

The singer was nominated for the Best International Act alongside American rappers, Post Malone, Tyler The Creator, Bruce Springsteen, Dermot Kennedy but Tyler The Creator emerged the winner. He was also nominated for Best British Single for his feature in Dave’s “Location” but lost to Lewis Capaldi for his track “Someone You Loved”.

The self-acclaimed African Giant was accompanied by his mom, Bose Ogulu who also doubles as his manager hit the red carpet looking like a bag of money and showed off his expensive jewelry set.

A 24-year-old man, Seidu Abdulahi, who allegedly stole a 3.9 gram gold chain worth N250,000, on Wednesday appeared before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

Abdulahi, of no fixed address, is facing a charge of stealing.

The Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the defendant committed the offence sometime in the month of January, at Tejuosho Market, Yaba, Lagos.

Osayande alleged that the defendant, who got tips for bringing customers to shop owners in Yaba, tricked the complainant, one Bashiru Mumini, into believing that someone wanted to buy a gold chain, and immediately absconded with it.

She said that Abdulahi was arrested weeks after, when he was spotted again at the market.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 287 (1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Abdulahi, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Oluyemisi Adelaja, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 with two responsible sureties in like sum.

Adelaja adjourned the case until March 25, for trial.

Actress Rita Dominic has slammed all those who think she’s not balling because she doesn’t post about designer labels and holiday trips on her social media pages.

In a post on her Instastories, the actress wondered when social media became the yardstick for determining who is wealthy and who is not.

According to Rita Dominic, expecting someone to post a materialistic lifestyle on social media before concluding that the person is doing well in life is simply a poverty mentality.

The 44-year old actress recently revealed in an interview on TV that she almost got married but called it off.

She said:

“I almost married someone. We were there. We were at that point. It didn’t work out and I’m happy it didn’t work out because I saw the signs.

“You know how you see the signs and you just ignore it hoping the person will change. Look, a grown man and a grown woman cannot change. They can find a way to live with each other and respect each other’s feelings, but to change a grown person is difficult.”

Admitting to have fallen in love with a man but lost out, Rita, while speaking during a television programme, ‘Your View’ on TVC in 2018, revealed she was happy the marriage did not work out.

The pretty screen star said when in a relationship, couples should at best find a way to live with each other, instead of trying to change negative traits, adding that a grown man cannot change.

Nigerian gospel singer, Tope Alabi has reacted to being called out over her “worldly dance” in a video which went viral on social media.

Some social media users who called out the gospel singer, said she is deviating from who she was 10 years ago.

A Facebook user, Adeniji Aderogba wrote;

“This is Evangelist Tope Alabi oo.. What is this world turns to for God sake. The Tope Alabi I knew 10 years ago is totally different from this one. Hmmmm Ogun Esu gbe ‘bon o!”

However reacting to the video in an interview on TVC’s “Wakeup Nigeria”, Tope Alabi stated that she needed that dance at that time.

According to the gospel singer, she was dancing at her father’s burial and people with “spiritual eyes” will understand its meaning.

Grammy Nominee, Burna boy shows off Platinum Plaque handed to him by Stormy for his feature in the track ‘Own It’.

Stormzy handed Burna Boy a Platinum plaque of his own after his single Own It featuring the African Giant and Ed Sheeran went Platinum in the UK #BRITCertified.

Stormzy handed the Platinum plaque to Burna Boy back stage at the Brit Awards 2020 where they got to perform their hit single ‘Own It.’

The team and crew can be heard clapping and celebrating the win. Burna Boy has taken to his social media page to share pictures of his plaque and certificate.

The European Union may toe the line of its ally, the United States government as they threatened to impose restrictive visa implementation rules on Nigeria.

Igbere TV learnt that the EU Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Ms. Virginie Battu-Henriksson, who raised the threat said that Visa restriction will go through if the Nigerian government fails to play its part in the return and readmission of its nationals staying illegally in the EU.

The EU, which comprises Germany, Italy, Spain, France, and 23 other countries, further stated that although it would not place a visa ban on Nigeria, it could make its visas more difficult for Nigerian applicants if Nigeria failed to meet its standards.

The United States of America had issued a restriction preventing Nigerians, as well as nationals of five other countries, from emigrating to the US.

The US claimed that Nigeria does not comply with its minimum security standards or cooperate to prevent illegal immigration.

It considered Nigeria as presenting a high risk of terrorist travel to the US.

A Nigerian lady took to Instagram to share a video of a confrontation at LoveWorld Church a.k.a Christ Embassy in Lachine, Montreal in Canada, which she claimed led to her and her three children being assaulted.

According to Anita Humphrey, she was allegedly assaulted for demanding for a written agreement for the balance of the money a Pastor of the church, Peter Enone owed her.

The lady claimed Pastor Enone told members of the church to throw her and her children out of the building for making the demands. She wrote;

My name is Anita Humphrey. I and my 3 children were assaulted on Sunday by Pastor Peter Enone of Christ Embassy, Lachine in Montreal, Canada for demanding for the money they owe me. 

He ordered members of his church to physically throw us out because I was DEMANDING A WRITTEN AGREEMENT FOR THE 10.9K$ CANADIAN BALANCE OF THE 13K$.

A Twitter user shared a couple of photos showing how students live and sleep in his school hostel and the living condition has shocked Twitter users.

In the photo shared online, students are seen sleeping on the floor in the middle of the room as all the bunks were occupied.

No fewer than 8 bodies can be seen lying on flat mattresses on the floor of the small dorm room.

The condition means that if a student wakes up at night and needs to use the bathroom, he’ll have to climb over sleeping bodies to leave the room.

The Twitter user revealed that the photo was taken in Jaja Hall, University of Lagos. He added that the rooms are “dominated by squatters that have no other options because the university doesn’t have enough bedspaces to accommodate students.”

He went on to reveal that he sleeps on a “slab” as no bed space was allocated to him.

Sharing the photos, student Akorede Ayanbisi wrote: “A view of how we live in school hostel, and after all these struggles and suffering to get the degree, the labour market isn’t even assured. E go be.”

He added: “This is Jaja Hall, University of Lagos. A 6 man room dominated by squatters that have no other options because the university doesn’t have enough bedspaces to accommodate students. And apartments off campus is very expensive, they cost between 300k to 700k per session.”

Following the unlawful invasion of the Abuja residence of the Justice of Supreme Court of Nigeria, Justice Mary Peter-Odili three days ago, popular lawyer and activist, Femi Falana (SAN) has requested the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu, to investigate the invasion.

Falana stated that the demonstrators were reported to be protesting the judgment delivered by the Supreme Court in respect of the Bayelsa governorship pre-election case presided over by Justice Odili.

In a statement issued in Lagos on Thursday titled, “Attack on Justice Odili”, Falana said the invasion of the demonstrators on her residence “infringed on her Ladyship’s fundamental right to privacy guaranteed by section 37 of the Constitution of Nigeria”.

“Never in the history of this country has a Justice of the Supreme Court been subjected to such embarrassment over his or her decision”, he stated.

He said since both All Progressive Congress (APC) and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have accused each other of sponsoring the protest, the Inspector General of Police should conduct an investigation into the incident.

Falana advised that; “Upon the conclusion of the investigation the report should be forwarded to the Attorney-General of the Federation with a view to charging the demonstrators with criminal trespass contrary to section 349 of the Penal Code applicable in the Federal Capital Territory”.

American film producer, Jon Peters has quickly moved on three weeks after ending his 12-day marriage to American-Canadian actress, Pamela Anderson.

According to UsWeekly, the 74-year-old movie producer is set to marry Julia Bernheim, who he dumped before marrying Pamela Anderson.

The publication also disclosed that the news of the engagement was revealed by Neptune Wellness CEO Michael Cammarata while he “rang the NASDAQ Closing Bell on Thursday, February 20.”

This comes three weeks after five times married Anderson and Peters tied the knot in a surprise wedding in Malibu on January 20 and announced just 12 days later that they had split.

In a previous interview, Jon refuted claims he asked the Baywatch star to be his wife, and instead claimed that the 52-year-old proposed to him – via text.

The movie producer was satd to have  paid off her $200,000 debts and bought her a new wardrobe during their 12-day marriage.

Peters later denied the claims in a recent interview with Ladysmith Chemainus Chronicle, insisting that he never made the comments.

He explained: ‘I haven’t spoken to the press – anybody. I’ve loved this kid since she was 20 years old. I still love her. We’re friends. We’ll always be friends. I helped her in a way that she needed, but it’s between her and I. I think she’s great, and that’s all I got to say.’

According to previous reports, Jon texted Pamela about ending their ‘beautiful amazing love fest’.

He allegedly wrote: ‘This whole marriage thing … has scared me. It made me see that at 74 I need a simple quiet life and not an international love affair. Therefore, I think the best thing we can do is that I’m going to go away for a couple of days and maybe you need to go back up to Canada.

‘The world knows we did it and I think now we need to go our own separate ways. I hope that you can forgive me.’

Suspected Boko Haram terrorists are currently on a killing spree in Garkida town in Adamawa State.

According to report, the town, Garkida was on fire.

Andrawus Tarfa, one source, revealed that the town was covered with tick black smoke.

He said, “Boko Haram terrorists have invaded our town, all we hear is rattling gunfire, just as thick bellowing smoke has covered the sky.”

It is not clear what damage the attack may have caused to human life and property, as the raid is still ongoing.

Spokesperson for the 23 Brigade of Nigeria Army in Yola, the state capital, could not confirm the attack, saying, “You have just given me the clue, I will get back to you soon.”

The son of a powerful Mexican drug lord was on Thursday extradited to the United States, where he is wanted for trafficking.

Ruben Oseguera Gonzalez, known as “El Menchito, who is the son of “El Mencho” Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, the head of the powerful Jalisco New Generation drug cartel “was extradited on the charge of conspiracy to smuggle drugs” into US territory.

The US-born was denied an appeal against his transfer to the United States, where he will be tried in federal court in Washington. Ruben was arrested and released four times between January 2014 and August 2015, when he was finally imprisoned on charges of being number two in the Jalisco New Generation cartel.

The Mexican government estimates the Jalisco New Generation cartel has amassed a $50 billion fortune. The cartel has a strong presence in nine Mexican states and connections with criminal organizations in the United States, Europe, Asia, and Latin America.

Back in 2018, the wife of the Jalisco New Generation drug cartel, Rosalinda Gonzalez Valencia, was arrested for drug-related cases.

According to the New York Times, the US Drug Enforcement Administration has a $10 million reward for information leading to the arrest of El Mencho.

The National Economic Crime Centre (NECC) said the bank accounts of Nigerian students are often used for third party transfer for a fee.

The government of the United Kingdom has warned Nigerian students to desist from money laundering and other criminal activities.

The UK government according to a statement signed by Ben Goong, the Deputy Director of Press and Public Relations of the Federal Ministry of Education gave the warning on Friday, February 21, 2020, in Abuja through its National Economic Crime Centre (NECC).

The NECC said the bank accounts of Nigerian students are often used for third party transfer for a fee.

In the statement, Goong said, “The British Government has warned intending Nigerian students to the United Kingdom against engaging in money laundering and other criminal activities. The British Government emphasised the need for students to be mindful of how their bank accounts are used, especially for the transfer of illicit funds as this will result in the termination of their studies and prosecution, when caught.

“While pledging to strengthen its fight against money laundering this year, the government disclosed that it discovered and froze 95 bank accounts, mostly belonging to international students.

“It stressed its resolve to take more concrete steps against the activities of money launderers, saying this is prompted by its plan to reintroduce a post study work visa for international graduate students in 2020 which is expected to increase the number of international students, including Nigeria.”
