I Take Full Responsibility for Fuel Scarcity- President Buhari Apologies(See Details) by Emlr(f) : 3:59 am On Dec 23

President Muhammadu Buhari has apologised to Nigerians over the fuel scarcity that has persisted across the country since October.

He apologised during the presentation of the 2016 budget to a joint session of the National Assembly on Tuesday in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

According to him, the cause of the scarcity was due to the refusal of stakeholders in the petroleum industry to embrace change.

He assured that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, has been mandated to explore ways to end the scarcity as quickly as possible.

On Monday, the Federal Government had blamed the administration of former president Goodluck Jonathan for the current scarcity by refusing to pay marketers subsidy claims owed them since 2014.

Story of Trader Who Killed his Friend Over N5,000 Electricity Bill...(Shocking Drama) by Emlr(f) : 5:56 pm On Dec 23

A 28-year-old trader, Chukwuebuka Okeke, has allegedly killed his friend and roommate, Nwabuike Ezeike, 39, after a disagreement over a N5, 000 electricity bill. The incident happened on Tuesday on Tokosi Street, Orile-Iganmu.

According to Punch, the friends, who were traders on the Lagos Island, had been together for a long time. They were also said to have contributed money for the rent of the single-room apartment.

The men, who hail from Anambra State, however, had a disagreement over their electricity bill.A relative of the deceased, Ben Eze, said the deceased had paid the suspect some money as his contribution towards the bill.

He said,

“But his friend squandered the money. So, as the payment became overdue and pressure was mounted on him to release the money, he passed on the aggression to the deceased and there was a fight. He was actually asleep when he attacked him.“People had separated them when he suddenly punched him in the head. He was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.”
It was learnt that the case was reported at the Orile Police Division and the suspect was arrested.

Another relative, Charles Anolue, said the victim was supposed to have his engagement ceremony later this month before he was killed. He said the family was pained that despite the death, the family of the suspect had not shown any sign of remorse over the incident.
“We are grieved and despite our loss, we would have resolved this case because we are from the same community. But the suspect’s family have been playing games which we don’t understand, and that is why we are ready to pursue this case to a logical end,” he added.
Lawyer for the deceased’s family, F.S. Oladele, urged the police to dig up all the evidence of the case.

However, the elder brother of the suspect, Emeka Okeke, explained that his family was not happy over the incident and efforts by community leaders to wade in had been frustrated by the deceased’s family.
“These two men have been friends for a long time and they are both traders. What happened between them was unfortunate and I know Chukwuebuka had no intention of killing his friend,” he added.
Counsel for the suspect, Spurgeon Ataene, denied that the 28-year-old killed the victim.
He said,
“It was the deceased that attacked first and my client dodged his blow. It was the force with which he attempted to punch my client that made him crash into a wall, thereby killing himself.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joe Offor, confirmed incident, adding that investigation was on at the SDCI.

I Have Defeated Boko Haram, Met December Deadline – Buhari by Emlr(f) : 4:28 pm On Dec 24

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said yesterday that the Nigerian military had met the December deadline to defeat the Boko Haram terrorists.

The minister said this during his maiden meeting with editorial heads of media houses in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that President Muhammadu Buhari had, upon assuming office, issued a December 31 deadline to the military to defeat the Boko Haram terrorists.

“Today, I can report that the war against Boko Haram is largely won.

“I can confidently say this because just recently, I led a group of 33 journalists from both the local and international media to the hot bed of the insurgency, that is, Maiduguri, Kondugua, Kaoure and Bama.

“Today, I can report to you that the entire 70 plus kilometres stretch from Maiduguri to Bama and all the way to Banki which leads to Cameroun and the Central African Republic are in the hands of our gallant troops.”

He said the military presence could be felt ‘’every few metres along the road; at a point along that road we were just a kilometre to Sambisa forest.

“They have so degraded the capacity of Boko Haram that the terrorists can no longer hold on to any territory just as they can no longer carry out any spectacular attack.”

Mohammed, however, said that though there were still cases of suicide bombings, it was pertinent to note that such was the nature if insurgency globally.

“Unlike a war between two armies, an insurgency never ends with arms victory

“Even in countries like Colombia where insurgency was supposed to have ended decades ago, attacks like this still happen.”

He said that the insurgents had adopted a new style of attacking soft targets like motor parks, schools, entertainment centres, religious centres, killing innocent people mostly women and children.

He, therefore, urged Nigerians to support the military in the fight against terrorism in the country, saying that the military had availed itself creditably.

“It is our turn as civilians to give them our support; to realise that the war they are fighting is not their war alone, but our war, hence we must own the war.”

The minister disclosed that a national security campaign had commenced to raise awareness among Nigerians about the war, the sacrifices of our troops, and how to stamp out the remnant of the war.

“Jingles are being played on national radio and television as part of the campaign in order to keep the media better informed about the war, so that they can also better inform Nigerians,” he said.

Mohammed also said that an ad-hoc committee, comprising media representatives as well as intelligence agencies, would be inaugurated to regularly be updated about the war in order to better inform the public.

$2.1bn Arms Deal: FG Freezes Accounts of Alleged Looters by Emlr(f) : 4:29 pm On Dec 24

The $2.1bn Arms Deal took new dimension yesterday as banks have got a directive to freeze the accounts of some suspects in the alleged N31billion Office of National Security Adviser (ONSA) sluch funds, The Nation reported

Affected are some House of Representatives members, some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chiefs and some companies.

Also, some accused persons on trial in connection with the ongoing probe of the ONSA cannot access their accounts.

Ex-National Security Adviser Sambo Dasuki and others yesterday perfected their bail conditions. They were awaiting their release last night.

A judge of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Justice Peter Affen, banned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from re-arresting Dasuki, ex-Minister Bashir Yuguda, ex- ONSA Director of Finance, Shuaibu Salisu, Sagir Attahiru and ex-Governor Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa.

All the banks, where the accounts of those affected are domiciled, have been asked to Post No Bill (PNB).

Those on the restricted list cannot access their accounts and all funds being remitted into them must be reported.

The ban will remain until the trial of most of the accused persons has been concluded.

It was learnt that the anti-graft agency does not want most of the accused persons and beneficiaries from ONSA funds to tamper with what is left in their accounts.

A source in the EFCC said: “The PNB is limited to accounts where the slush funds were deposited and other traceable accounts . In some instances, we obtained court orders to freeze a few accounts.

“We decided to place restriction as part of our ongoing investigation into the scandal. We have informed all relevant banks that we are probing some transactions relating to such accounts.

“Those affected are the accused persons and all those named as having benefited from the disbursement of funds. The list is longer than you have been reading about. On the list are companies, individuals serving as fronts, accused persons, PDP stalwarts, and some serving or former members of the House of Representatives.

“We want to be at an advantage where we can recover looted funds as may be determined by the court,” the source added.

Responding to a question, the source added that the restriction is in line with Section 34(1) (2) of the EFCC Act.

The section reads: “Notwithstanding anything contained in any other enactment or law, the chairman of the commission or any officer authorized by him may, if satisfied that the money in the account of a person is made through the commission of an offence under this Act or any enactments specified under Section 6(2) (a)-(f) of this Act , apply to the Court for ex-parte power to issue or instruct a bank examiner or such other appropriate regulatory agency to issue an order as specified in Form B of the Schedule to this Act, addressed to the manager of the bank or any person in control of the financial institution where the account is or believed by him to be or the head office of the bank or other financial institution to freeze the account.

“The Chairman of the commission or any officer authorised by him may by an order issued under sub-section (1) of this section or by any subsequent order, direct the bank or other financial institution to supply any information and produce books and documents relating to the account and to stop all outward payments, operations or transactions (including any bill of exchange) in respect of the account of the arrested person.

“The manager or any other person in control of the financial institution shall take necessary steps to comply with the requirements of the order made pursuant to subsection(2) of this section.”

Some of those affected confirmed the restriction placed on their accounts.

One of the defence counsel said: “Our clients have been informed about the restriction of access to their accounts. I think the EFCC did so because it is still investigating some transactions.

“The commission also does not want them to withdraw what is left in those accounts.”

A member of the House of Representatives said: “I don’t have access to my account in which my salaries and allowances are being paid into.

“I did not benefit from any campaign funds. The N50million allegedly traced to my account was no slush fund at all; it was payment for a consultancy job, which was awarded through due process after the consideration of the feasibility study. The money for the service was paid after the election. I did not benefit from any campaign fund. I don’t engage in dirty deals. I have a good reputation.”

The order of the court not to arrest the accused persons, followed the granting of the application for bail by counsel to the defendants, including Peter Akper(SAN), Ahmed Raji( SAN), Dr. J. O. Olatoke(SAN), H.O. Afolabi(SAN) and A.U Mustapha.

Justice Affen said: “It is ordered as follows: 1st( Bashir Yuguda), 2nd(Mohammed Sambo Dasuki), 3rd( Shuaibu Salisu), 5th Sagir Attahiru and 6th (Attahiru Bafarawa) defendants are hereby admitted to bail in the sum of N250million only with two sureties in the like sum, one of whom shall be a serving or retired public servant not below the status of a director in the public/ civil service of the Federation or any of the states of the Federation or any of their agencies and shall produce a valid documentation of his/ her status to the Registrar of this court.

“Each surety shall produce two recent passport-sized photographs and depose to an affidavit of means certifying that he has the financial wherewithal to discharge and forfeit the recognisances for the bail herein granted in the event that the Defendant for whom he is surety jumps bail and / or escapes from Justice.

“One of the two sureties shall produce and deposit the original title deeds of a property or properties owned by him and situate within the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja which, when evaluated by an estate surveyor duly licensed by the Nigerian Institute of Estate Surveyors and Valuers( NIESV) shall on the aggregate be worth the sum of N250million being the amount of the consideration for the bail granted herein.

“The sureties shall be resident within the jurisdiction of this Court and their physical residential addresses shall be verified by the Registrar of this Court.

“The sureties shall be resident within the jurisdiction of this Court and their physical residential addresses shall be verified by the Registrar of this Court.

“During the continuance of the bail herein granted, in the event that the personal attendance of the defendants or any of them shall be required by the complainant for purposes of further investigation, they or he shall be required to appear between the hours of 9 o’clock in the forenoon and 6 o’clock in the evening and be allowed to return home the same day.

“In the event that their or his appearance shall be required at any other time outside the period aforesaid, this shall only be on the orders of a Superior Court Record.

“The orders herein contained are hereby expressly made subject to such further order(s) as may become necessary during the continuance of the bail herein granted.

“The 1st( Bashir Yuguda), 2nd(Mohammed Sambo Dasuki), 3rd( Shuaibu Salisu), 5th Sagir Attahiru and 6th (Attahiru Bafarawa)shall in the interim be remanded in the custody of the Nigerian Prison Service, FCT Command and shall only be released upon a Release Warrant issued by this Court upon being satisfied that the conditions herein contained have been complied with.

“In the unlikely event that the defendants (or any of them) are still in the custody of the Nigerian Prison Service by reason of inability to comply with or perfect the conditions upon which they are being admitted to bail, they shall be produced before this court on the
date(s)fixed for trial.”

Those whose bail terms have been approved are Salisu, Bafarawa and ex-NNPC Executive Director Aminu Babakusa.

Dasuki, Sagir Bafarawa and Yuguda were last night unable to perfect their bail conditions.

They will have to wait till the next working day.

Jonathan’s Men Set To Form New Mega Party, Say PDP Now ‘Symbol of Corruption’ by Emlr(f) : 10:04 am On Dec 25

This may not the best of times for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as there are indications that a section of its members have decided to pull out of the party to float a new mega party.

Confirming this indication, the spokesman of the proposed new party, Chief Perry Opara said that a meeting which was held in respect to the formation of the new mega party, attracted reasonable turnout and members canvassed the formation of masses movement that will provide a voice for the masses, since PDP can no longer be a credible opposition party.

Opara, who was Nigeria’s first national chairman of Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) explained that they are disappointed that the umbrella of PDP has torn beyond repairs and the house is infected, which has made the image of PDP to be presently irredeemable.

He said, “The leadership of the party is embroiled with corruption charges, a situation where BOT Chairman, NWC members and top leaders of the party are facing corruption charges, credible men can no longer remain in a stinking house.

“I assure Nigerians that as the probe continues, it will be difficult for leaders and members of PDP to visit Wadata Plaza. PDP has become a symbol of corruption, impunity and lawlessness. It will be difficult for PDP to win future elections in Nigeria.

“In the last election, party functionaries striped aspirants of their hard -earned monies. Some aspirants spent more than N500 million just to get party ticket and after collecting huge sums from aspirants, they still denied them tickets. What a fraud. We have identified few elders who are credible enough to lead and they will be identified in due course.”

Tragic! How a Lagos Policeman Killed Twin Brothers, their Friend & Himself (photos) by Emlr(f) : 7:38 pm On Dec 27

A drunk policeman, Stephen James, on Saturday shot dead three male customers at a hotel in the Ketu area of Lagos State.
SUNDAY PUNCH learnt that among the deceased were twin brothers identified as Taiwo and Kehinde Oyesunle and their friend known simply as Jeje. The twins were the only children of their mother.
The tragic incident; which happened outside the premises of Paulson Hotel on Anibaba Street around 4:20pm, threw the entire neighbourhood and its environs into chaos with passers-by and residents scampering in different directions.
According to eyewitnesses, trouble started when the police sergeant with Force number 217884, threatened to shoot customers if they failed to buy him an alcoholic drink. The policeman, who was said to be a habitual smoker of marijuana, however, felt offended after the victims – Taiwo, Kehinde and Jeje – cautioned him to comport himself as an adult and a responsible policeman.
The eyewitnesses said the policeman ambushed and killed the three young men, who were in their early 30s, as they stepped outside the hotel premises where they had gone to celebrate Jeje’s birthday.
When the gravity of his act dawned on him, the policeman reportedly shot himself in the chest.
A guest at the hotel, who witnessed the killings, told SUNDAY PUNCH that the policeman had boasted about wanting to kill people hours before the incident happened.
The customer, who identified himself only as Femi, said all efforts to pacify the policeman proved abortive as he kept fomenting trouble and harassing visitors with his gun all afternoon.“I was in the bar when the policeman first came in and threatened to shoot customers if they failed to buy him drinks. He boasted that he felt like killing someone today, but other customers and I pleaded with him.
“When the three guys walked in and sat, he went to them and threatened them too. But the guys told him to calm down that they would take care of him but he should comport himself as a responsible police officer.
“Nobody knew he took offence with their statement. The police officer shot the three guys one after the other as they stepped outside the hotel before killing himself. The whole thing happened like a movie,” he said.
Another resident Ladipo Idowu told our correspondents that the policeman was known to foment trouble in the area.
He said James usually fired his gun indiscriminately and the residents had warned the hotel authorities to caution him but nothing was done about it.
Another eyewitness, Dada Salawu, said, he was passing by when he saw the policeman and the three friends exchanging words. He said hardly had he left the area when the policeman opened fire on the victims.
A former girlfriend to one of the slain twins told SUNDAY PUNCH that they were the only children of their parents.
The lady, who was inconsolable as she spoke to one of our correspondents, said the twins were still mourning the death of their father who passed away in June 2014 when their lives were cut short.
Refusing to have her picture taken, she said, “I called them very early on Saturday morning not to go outside their compound after I dreamt of seeing blood. I called them again at about 2:00pm to warn them. The twins, however, decided to drive a vehicle a relation had just bought at about 3:00pm. They drove to Paulson Hotel.”
The Sports Utility Vehicle which the victims drove was still parked in front of the hotel by the time our correspondents left the scene.
An angry mob, which later gathered at the scene of the tragedy, attempted to burn down the hotel and destroy properties within its premises.
As irate youths threw bottles and stones at the hotel, lodgers ran out of their rooms with their luggage and fled the scene. As at the time of filing this report, the hotel had been completely deserted by staff and guests.
The youths also wanted to burn the corpse of the policeman, but policemen, who later got to the scene pleaded with them.
Policemen led by the Divisional Police Officer of the Ketu Police Station arrived at the scene at about 5.30 pm to carry the corpses away.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Joe Offor, confirmed the killings to our correspondents on the telephone. However, he said he had not yet received the full details of the incident.
DSP Joe Offor said, “The policeman was on duty at that hotel. He was attached to Mopol 22, Ikeja. He was drunk while on duty and he acted under the influence of alcohol.”
Efforts to speak with the management of the hotel on the incident proved abortive as it was deserted as of 6.30pm when one of our correspondents left the scene.
When one of our correspondents visited the home of the twins at No. 3, Dairo Street, Ketu, a sea of sympathisers were gathered, while friends of the victims vowed to revenge the killing. The entire neighbourhood was in tension with nearby hotels, drinking joints and shops closing for business earlier than usual.

Suicide Bomber Dressed as A Lady Caught in Church--Photo by Emlr(f) : 12:51 am On Dec 28

The desperation of Boko Haram to discredit federal government's assertion that they have been contained is very obvious. A suicide bomber has been caught at a Catholic Church in Biliri LGA of Gombe State with the intention of blowing up himself and others while the Christmas service was on.

He was busted by some Vigilante Muslim youth who were guarding the church, after they noticed he wasn’t walking like a woman despite he had his hair neatly braided and was dressed in a woman’s attire.

He was stopped from entering the church and searched. Upon searching him, they found he had no bre*st and as a matter of fact he is not a woman. A suicide vest was also seen strapped over his waist. Hmmm!

OMG! Pastor Dies on Christmas Day Few Hours After His ‘Prophetic’ Post on Facebook by Emlr(f) : 12:53 am On Dec 28

In a strange twist of fate that has sent the online community into shock, a businessman, Egheomhanre Eyieyien, hours after a clairvoyant Facebook post, died on Christmas Day.

In the commemorative message posted at 8.05am same day, Egheomhanre, a Pastor, wrote, “I hear in my spirit the words; an unusual Christmas Day; an uncommon day; completion; conclusiveness; unmistakable proofs, ear-tingling testimonies… to the person who can believe God. Merry Christmas!”

Unfortunately, Pastor Egheomhanre’s only brother, Iyere, barely five hours after, announced the passing of his brother on the same social networking site.

Iyere, in a shocking post on his page, said:
“My only brother, Pastor Egheomhanre Emmanuel Eyieyien (29th April 1967 – 25th December 2015), went to be with the Lord this morning after a brief illness.

“My heart is heavy. What can I say but thank God for a life well spent? He fought a good fight. The crown he worked for all these years is now resting majestically on his head. Jehovah be praised!”

Both brothers’ accounts have since been inundated with hundreds of comments from well-wishers.

Iyere wrote under his brother’s post, “You heard right my beloved brother. I have known you all my life. It is an honour and privilege to have been you younger brother. I will miss you. I am already missing you.”

Among those that commented was a popular economist, Ayo Teriba, who expressed shock at the incident.

Teriba said, “It is a thing of marvel to know this was Eghes’ last ever Facebook post! He had these premonitions only a few hours before he went into his rest, and even put them in writing, (and) tagged a few friends, before posting it on his wall! May his soul rest in peace!”

Another relative, Odianosen Eyieyien, wrote, “The shocking news that brought tears to our eyes. We bless the hours we had with you. RIP Uncle Egheomhanre Eyieyien.”

According to an autobiography published online by Egheomhanre in 2013, who was a senatorial aspirant of the All Progressives Congress for Edo-Central, he was given the pet name ‘Eghes’ by his mother, which means “My time has come” in the Bini language.

He was the first of his parents’ two sons and the Group Chief Executive Officer of Pharez Limited, which he founded in 1998. He was a self-described ordained pastor, as well as a member of the Sub-Committee on Strategy, Research and Advocacy of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria.

He is survived by a wife of 13 years and son. May his soul rest in peace!

Labaran Maku opens up On 2.1bUSD Arms Cash Loot by Emlr(f) : 12:56 am On Dec 28

Former minister of Information, Labaran Maku, said he's ready to open up "about everything going on” in the $2.1bn arms deal scandal involving ex-National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki.
“When you have spoken so long and people have heard your voice, you also withdraw and hear others. I have my views about everything that is going on now. When the time is due, when I have respected public decency, waited and have heard some other Nigerians, I will make my views known.

“I don’t want to comment on this administration now because I was in the previous government as minister of Information and our voice was all over the nation. Decency requires that I keep quiet and let Nigerians hear other voices. That doesn’t mean I will not say anything, but it is virtually too early for me as a former minister of Information to begin to talk about what is going on at the moment.

“But for now, it is too early for me to say anything. The processes that are going on are in the full glare of Nigerians and what I will say is that the media should be very careful. That’s my advice and I will not say anything else."
