(Episode 22) A Brush With The Past… A Tale of Redemption and Love by Amos123(f) : 11:16 pm On Aug 07

Stella: “Ashley! You! No now. E no possible. No…wetin I do you?” she asked, as she jumped on Ashley.

The policemen quickly separated them. Detective Hamza came into the office and saluted the D.P.O, then he walked to Ashley and removed the cuffs from her wrists. Ashley rubbed her wrists and smiled at Stella, who stood with her mouth open. She drew a chair and sat down.

Ashley: “seat Stella, let me tell you a story.” She said, patting a chair by her side.

Stella: “what is going on here? Why is she sitting like she owns the office.” She asked, looking at the D.P.O in anger.

Detective Hamza: “your friend is actually working for the police. She is an undercover police officer. She is actually of the same rank as I am.” He replied, softly.

Stella turned to look at Ashley in surprise. She was smiling as she lit a stick of cigarette and drew long and hard.

Ashley: “I am sorry I lied to you and putting your daughter in danger. I wish everything could have been done differently but it had to be this way.” She said, staring at Stella through a haze of smoke.

Detective Hamza got up, took the child and walked out of the office, promising Stella not to take her far.

Ashley: “at first I was just one of Tega’s girls in Italy allthough I thought then that I was his only girl. After we had spent the little money I had left, after my father disowned me on realizing that I had not been going to school as he thought I was, he put me out to hustle for him. At first it was with select clients, wealthy white men, business men, industrialists and so on. Then I discovered that he was robbing these men too. Once he realised I knew, started introducing me to more scams. We did everything, robbed, scammed, sold drugs, forged documents for illegal immigrants, we even sold girls, which were sent to Russia and other parts of Eastern Europe. I and my colleagues made a pile of money for the rogue but it was not enough. He invested into a deal that went bad and he lost everything.

By then, I was done for. I had done several forced abortions and lost two pregnancies due to his beatings as well as the drugs I took to keep me steady. I had treated several STDs and overdosed several times; I was basically a wreck but I had some money that I managed to save. The fool suggested we come back to Nigeria and start all over again. I agreed. The moment we landed, we were arrested. He was set free because nothing could be pinned on him but i had already fronted for him so many times, in the few times I came to Nigeria that I had a rap sheet that could have gotten me a life sentence. So I made a deal.

You see Tega is always after a big score. I knew that he was never satisfied. So they promised me freedom if i help them catch him in a crime. After all, I was after under his control throughout the period of my criminal activity.” She stopped and dragged the cigarette smoke into her lungs and blew it out.

“D.P.O Desmond, then an inspector became my case officer. He trained me quietly while I played the role of a used up prostitute. Tega used my little savings to open his hotel and started his scams; small time stuffs like helping yahoo boys get stuff, selling weed, supplying girls. I waited patiently until, this kidnap deal came. The day he showed me your picture, I nearly died but I had suspected that was why I came looking for you.” she concluded.

Stella sighed and stared at the floor.

Stella: “is that why you allowed my child get into such danger. Were you really looking for your child?” She asked, angrily.

Ashley looked quickly at the D.P.O who frowned. Part of her deal with the police was to never contact any member of her family, so as not to compromise the job. She had not been able to resist the opportunity, Stella had given her.

Ashley: “if I had stayed away, the job would have been carried out and by now you would have been coughing up one hundred million naira. It was better that I was on the scene, to protect your daughter and also implicate Tega. And yes, I am still looking for my son.” She replied.

Stella: “this is too much to take. Where is Brukeme?” she suddenly asked.

Ashley: “he was shot. He has been rushed to the hospital. Is that his name? How do you know him?” she asked.

Stella: “a friend of mine recommended him to me. I don’t really know him. Why do you ask?”

Ashley: “can you do something for me?” she asked.

Stella: “no. I can understand why you did what you did but I don’t trust you anymore. Please do not come close to me again. Ever.” She replied then she got up and walked away.

Ashley rushed after her and grabbed her hand. Stella turned around and slapped her but she refused to let go.

Ashley: “please help me. There is something about that boy that worries me. Please go to him and help me find out. Please. I can’t go there or I will blow my cover. Please do this for me and I will never come near you ever again

Stella looked at her, nodded and sighed.

Stella: “you broke my heart o.” she said, softly then she walked away.

Kate came to join Fidelia at where she stood, biting her nails, her eyes fixed on the police man who stood guard at the theatre door.

Kate: “I hear your boyfriend is an armed robber.” She said, placing her arm around her sister’s shoulder, a cheeky grin on her face.

Fidelia: “he is not a robber!” she shouted and shrugged her shoulder, removing her sister’s arm in the process.

Kate: “sorry o. Have you heard anything?” she asked; her face more serious.

Fidelia shook her head, her eyes on the policeman. Soon, Voke came on his wheelchair and joined them as they waited. Suddenly, a woman rushed in with a girl in tow. She went to the policeman standing guard, who told her to wait for the doctor. The woman walked back and stood close to Fidelia and her friends. Fidelia drew close to her

Fidelia: “good afternoon ma. Are you Brukeme’s mother?” she asked.

Stella: “no. he is my daughter’s driver. Who are you?” she asked, in return.

Fidelia: “I am a friend. They say that he tried to kidnap someone.” She replied, staring at the woman.

Stella: “no o! He actually saved my daughter from the assailants.” She replied.

The theatre door opened and the doctor stepped out, removing gloves from his hands. The group rushed to him, and queried him about the state of Brukeme.

Doctor: “he is fine. The bullet has been removed but he lost a lot of blood. He will need blood. We are doing his blood work now. Is there any member of his family here?”

Jerry: “e no get family. Na me and Kevwe be e family but if na blood I go donate.” He said, as he rushed into the waiting area, sweating profusely.

Fidelia: “thank you. Thank you.” she said, to Jerry.

Jerry looked at her curiously as he was taken away by a nurse to run the tests needed before the blood transfusion is carried out.

Tega sat in the interrogation room, his hands on the head. The door opened and detective Hamza walked in, shutting the door behind him.

Tega: “ha detective Hamza, thank God, it is you. You know me now. tell your men who I be.” He said, excited at seeing a friendly face.

Detective Hamza: “Tega, the case looks bad for you o. your men have confessed o and their confessions are the same, so e no fit be lie.” He replied as he sat down.

Tega: “na lie. I know those people. I swear.” He replied automatically.

Detective Hamza: “you no know Ashley too?” he asked, staring at Tega with sad eyes.

Tega: “that old okpo. I don’t have any control over what she does o. in fact, I had thrown her out of my hotel some time ago. She has always been a bad egg, that one.” He replied, angrily.

Detective Hamza: “but she says different. She says you are the mastermind.” He replied, softly.

Tega: “that is a lie! I am just an hotelier, catering to the needs of my community.” He replied.

Detective Hamza placed a phone on the table and stared at Tega.

Detective Hamza: “do you recognize this phone?” he asked.

Tega: “no, I don’t.” he replied quickly, his eyes shifting from the phone to the detective.

Detective Hamza: “let me play a recording for you.” he said, then he pressed play on the phone screen.

The conversation he had several days back with Ashley started playing. Tega gasped in recognition of his voice telling Ashley, he would give her one million naira and describing the target of the kidnap. Detective Hamza nodded his head sadly.

Detective Hamza: “the game is up Tega.” He said softly.

Tega: “please it was that whore. She was the brain behind this. She set me up. Please.” He pleaded, sweat beading his bleached forehead.

Detective Hamza: “this is the tip of the iceberg. She has given us info on your past dealings. We know of you Tega. Infact…” he got up and went to the door, he opened it and Ashley entered the room.

Tega: “you bitch! You bitch! Where are my documents? I took care of you, gave you a life then you betray me? You are dead know that.” He said; anger in his eyes.

Ashley ignored him and walked to where he sat. She pushed his shirt upwards and looked at the mark.

Ashley: “it’s the same.” She muttered.

Tega: “what is it? What are you doing? Why is she not in handcuffs like me?” he asked, surprise on his face.

Ashley: “the driver of the car was shot. He might not make it. He had this mark on his arm.” She said, looking at him intently.

Tega: “so? How is that my concern? Anyone can have a mark on his skin.” he replied, looking at the detective with a questioning look.

Ashley: “his name is Brukeme.” She said, softly.

Tega turned to look at her in surprise then he burst into laughter. Ashley stepped back in shock.

Tega: “ha…fate is a curious being. Lawd! Well at least those idiots did something right.” He said, wiping his eyes with his cuff hands and chuckling.

Ashley: “what is that supposed to mean?” she asked, fear gripping her heart.

Tega: “darling but that’s our son. God is indeed a comedian.” He said; then burst into laughter again.

Question: Brukeme is Tega’s son and Ashley’s son; what about Voke and Friday. Whose sons are they?

Bayern Munich turns down €24M Neymar in 2010 - Agent by Amos123(f) : 8:53 am On Aug 08

The Brazilian superstar, who just smashed the world transfer record, was turned down by the German side due to a price tag that was deemed too high

Bayern Munich could have signed Neymar for €24 million in 2010 but refused, claims Croatian agent Predrag Racki.

The 25-year-old Brazilian moved from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain last week in a world-record €222 million deal , but he could have linked up with the German side seven years ago for a much smaller sum.

In an interview with Novi list, Racki said that he attempted to facilitate a transfer for Neymar in 2010, but the Germans balked at the asking price at the time.

"It was the January transfer window in 2010 when Danny Budimir from Golden Goal Sports & Marketing agency in Chicago made contact with Neymar's agent Wagner Ribeiro," Racki said.

"And at the same time, with help of my friend Giovanni Trapattoni, I arranged a meeting with Bayern's director for football Christian Nerlinger.

"At the time Neymar was 17 and you could tell he was top class, great technique, great skills ... he was only far thinner than he is today.

"I met Nerlinger in Munich after talking to him twice over the phone. He told me they were aware who Neymar is, one of biggest talents in the world, but got stuck with the price, which was €18m, with bonuses up to €24m.

Ronaldo & Bale to face Man Utd
"Nerlinger told me they will keep following him but that Bayern is not willing to give that much money for a player who is not 18 yet."

Following Bayern's refusal to purchase Neymar in 2010, the Brazilian star eventually moved from Santos to Barcelona in 2013 for a fee of €88.2m.

The Second officer moved closer to his colleague after Dragon had been handcuffed.

Second Officer: “what happened?” He asked as he moved closer to the car. “What is this?’ He asked flashing his torchlight to see clearly.

First Officer: ‘oga abeg come down” he said to the driver of the car. However, the driver was reluctant to come out of the car. “You better come down now, before I break your head with this club”. He threatened as he waved the club in his hand at the driver of the vehicle.

Second Officer: “is he proving stubborn?” He asked moving closer to the driver seat.

First Officer: “come see o. im no wan gree come out from im car”. He replied.

Second Officer: “oga abeg come down” He said angrily. “Agh! No be bishop be this?” he exclaimed, with his mouth wide open as he pointed the torchlight to the bishop’s face.

Bishop: “please, I beg you, officer. Let us settle it amicably. I will give you whatever you want. Anything, just name it”. He pleaded.

Second Officer: “haba! A whole bishop? What has this world turned into? Just few weeks ago we catch one pastor, we never get to the root of the matter, this one don happen again. Wetin dis town turn to sef?  ” He said rhetorically, shaking his head

First Officer: “oga, abeg tell am make we dey go station. These criminals must reach station”

Second Officer: “oya, enter the van and let’s go” he said, as he shoved the Bishop forward to the stationed police van.

First Officer: “hmmmm, this life na wa o. Dead body for bishop car”. He said, clapping his palms.

The Vice Chancellor was in his office when the landline rang.

Dr Ijimere: “who could that be this early morning?” he thought out loud as he stretched his hand to pick the receiver. “Hello! Dr Ijimere on the line” He spoke into the receiver.

The Caller: “hello Alex. It is me, the Commissioner. See, it has happened o. the boys have been caught”. He broke the news and the line went faint.

Dr Ijimere: “yes, commissioner. What do we do next? Hello! Hello!” He spoke into the receiver and hung the call after he discovered the line had gone off. “agh! This is big problem! How do we do this? Anyway, we will always have a way”. He said casually, shrugging off his shoulders.

The Commissioner was pacing his office, feeling restless, confused and worried.

Commissioner: “agh, what do I do now? What do I do now?” he said, clenching his fist and sweating profusely under a rolling ceiling fan. “agh, I have to act fast before these boys start mentioning names”. He soliloquised as he moved close to the window of his office to look through the window. He grabbed the car keys on the table and went to car park. One of the escorts offered to drive but he rejected.

At the Police station, the DPO spoke with the police officers in his office.

DPO: “I really commend you people’s efforts. This is a job well done” he said, to appreciate the police officer’s efforts in getting the culprits arrested. “And secondly, you must ensure other members of the group are arrested”.

Sergeant Rufus: “okay sir”. He replied, throwing a salute.

DPO: “Okay, you can go”. He said, waving off his fingers. He asked one of the officers to stay behind. “Sergeant Rufus, let me see you”.

Sergeant Rufus: “yes sir!”

DPO: “Sit down” he said, pointing to a wooden chair in front of him. “How far with the investigation on the guy and the bishop? Is the boy helping you with the investigation?’ he asked looking at the sergeant.

Sergeant Rufus: “hmmm”. He sighed. “Sir, there is a big problem. The names of people the guy is mentioning are top people in the society. The one that surprised me the most is the name of our boss that he mentioned when we were interrogating him”. He replied, looking face down.

DPO: “Agh! Which of our bosses?” he asked, looking surprised.

Sergeant Rufus: “The Commissioner, sir!” He replied, looking away. The room was thrown into absolute silence.

The leaders in the Cathedral had an emergency meeting in the church’s conference room over the arrest of the bishop. The Archdeacons presided over the meeting.

Archdeacon: “Good morning everyone. I greet us all in the name of Jesus. I believe we know the reason behind our meeting today. It is about the dean and the bishop. We have to be extremely careful these days as there are evil people around looking for whom to devour. Therefore, we have to watch and pray”.

Canon Bamgbose: “the church has a committee looking into the issue. And the lawyer is really trying his best with some investigations. I believe very soon we shall get to the root of the matter.

Mr Bodunde: “good morning everyone!” he greeted, adjusting his glasses. “We have decided to pay them visits today. We have decided to leave for the station after the meeting this morning” he said and paused for effect.

Archdeacon: “okay, good. Without wasting much of our time, we can proceed to the place. Let us pray”. He said, after the meeting had been rounded off.

====

Handcuffed Prisoner

Mrs Agbabiaka was in the station with other members of the church when the police broke the news of her son to her.

DPO: “Madam, welcome. You can have your seat. I am sorry to tell you, that besides the bishop’s case, there is another case in our station regarding your family. Your son, John, was with the kidnapper few minutes before the arrest of the bishop. He and the police officers were involved in a shooting battle at the checkpoint so he lost his life in the cause.

Mrs Agbabiaka: “agh!” she exclaimed, putting her hands on her head and weeping uncontrollably. “This boy has killed me. I am still trying to recover from the death of his sister, and now this is happening again. Oh Lord, why me?” she wept, and bit her finger.

Few minutes afterwards, the Archdeacons and other members of the church arrived at the station.

Mr Bodunde: “good morning officer, please we are here to see the DPO”. He greeted the constable at reception desk.

Constable: “yes, do you have an appointment with him?” he asked, looking fixedly at the record book.

Canon Bamgbose: “we are from the Church of the Nation. We are here to see..” the constable cut him short.

Constable: “oh, okay. Hold on”. He said, as he dialed the DPO’s office line and they were granted the permission to enter. “Okay sir, you can go in”. He said, pointing to the direction of the office.

DPO: “welcome, sirs. You can have your seat”. He stood up to welcome the Archdeacon and the others, offering them seats. “You are welcome”. He greeted bowing his head forward, while Mrs Agbabiaka looked on

Archdeacon: “Yes, thank you DPO. God bless you sir. Good morning Ma! You are also here?” he asked the bishop’s wife.

Mrs Agbabiaka: “Yes Sir!” she replied, sobbing.

Archdeacon: “hmmm, our mother, it is okay. Let us call on God. He shall deliver his people from these trials.

Mrs Agbabiaka: “hmmm, the DPO has just told me now that John was also caught with some cultists and killed few minutes before Bishop was arrested”. She explained sobbing. The room became gloomy. Everyone in the room became silent abruptly. The Archdeacon broke the silence.

Archdeacon: “hmmmmm,” he sighed, looking face down. “It is well. Please DPO, can we see the bishop”. He asked.

DPO: “Of course!” He replied and led them to where the bishop was.

Archdeacon: “good morning Bishop! He greeted as the bishop was brought into a small room in the station. The Canon and the people’s warden stood up to greet him as well.

Bishop: “thank you. I appreciate all of you for your love and efforts. Even when I don’t deserve to be loved, you still show me love. Hmmmm”. He sighed and chuckled. “hmmm, life is vanity upon vanity. I want to use this medium to appeal to the church and every other person concerned. I have wronged the Church in so many ways, which only God Himself can have mercy on me and forgive me. I am sorry and I bury my face in shame for not being patient enough. Because of power, authority and greediness I sought the devil and here I am paying for my evil deeds”.

The room remained more silent than a grave yard as the bishop confessed all his evil deeds.

Canon Bamgbose: “hmmmm”. He sighed looking face down.

Bishop:” I have sinned against God, the church and humanity. All the deaths going on in Church are from me”. The people around opened their mouths wide, looking amazed.  “I killed the sexton in the cathedral when he saw me in the church premise in the midnight. I arranged for the dean’s implication after he saw me at the Fraternity’s meeting place with some persons. I had to implicate him after so many failed attempts of killing him. One of the attempts was during the synod at the diocese archdeaconry, he escaped death that night. I was planning of getting rid of him, that was why I arranged for a corpse to be put in his boot as I knew he would always meet the police on his way to the Cathedral. I have done a lot of evil which I cannot even recount at the moment. Just plead with the dean on my behalf. I apologise to my wife, despite her faithfulness, and dedication to God I betrayed her, as I put my hands into so many shady deals, costing our children’s lives. My only daughter was also taken by the fraternity I was in for sacrifice. And the corpse found in my car was a result of another demand from the group”. He explained, looking face down and sobbing.

Archdeacon: “but, why? Bishop why?!” he asked, looking extremely unhappy.

Bishop: “hmmm, this is where avariciousness has led me. All in the name of becoming the presiding bishop of the diocese.

Archdeacon: “but, what has the post of bishop got to do with the fraternity? There is no relationship now”. He asked looking bewildered.

Bishop: “hmmmm, when I was the dean of the cathedral, and the then bishop was about to retire, I found out that someone else was going to be ordained as the new bishop. So, the idea did not go down well with me. I had to seek the help of some persons, and this is where they led me. I never knew it would be like this. I joined because of power, money and fame, and I lost everything all in the process. My daughter paid for the sins she never committed. I did not know my son was being used by other members of the fraternity in his school. There is no power nowhere, except the power of God. All the things the devil give are a figment of what God has. If only we can be patient in life. I know I can’t get out of this”. He said, looking remorseful. The DPO and others left the room and bishop was returned to his cell room.

THE END!

EPILOGUE

The dean was released afterwards and few months later, he was ordained as the new bishop of the Cathedral. The town was purged of ritualists and other diabolical acts to a minimal rate. The Chief Priest and some other members of the fraternity were equally arrested after police investigation and were charged to court after confessing to various crimes including murder. The Commissioner of Police however, died in an auto crash the day he drove out of his office out of anxiety. The Vice Chancellor was equally arrested and charged to court alongside Dragon and other members of his groups on campus and sentenced life imprisonment. However, the Bishop died on his way to court during the hearing of his case as a result of shock.

Few months later, Laura, Kunle’s fiancée gave birth to a set of twins in the UK (male and female), and there was joy again in the household of The Mates.

(Episode 2) The Trials of A Man… A Story of Love and War by Amos123(f) : 2:16 am On Aug 21

Uju walked to the man snoring near the door, and tapped his shoulder.

Uju: “Okereke!” she shouted into his ears.

Okereke opened his eyes stared at Uju. He wiped the stain of saliva on his cheek and sat up straight.

Uju: “dis man buy food, e no wan pay.” She said, pointing at Omonigho.

Okereke looked at him briefly and sighed. He yawned widely and rubbed his eyes. Omonigho stood staring at the road like a statue. A fly was perched on his finger, sucking the drying water from his skin.

Okereke: “na one of those war prisoners. How much e chop?” he asked, standing up and twisting his waist to the right then to the left – trying to get a crack of bones snapping back into place.

Uju: “N200.” She replied, turning to look at Omonigho in annoyance.

Okereke was still swinging. Then a sharp crack split the air and he sighed and stopped. He looked at Omonigho and sighed again – “Oga follow me.” He said, beckoning to him. Omonigho walked to him and the two men stepped out into the sun.

The route, Okereke took, was a confused one. There were several sharp turns, several jumps across man-made streams of faeces, water and food, several short cuts through the homes of several disinterested families then they climbed a fence and, they arrived.

It was a building, according to Okereke, who had talked the whole time, they were jumping, turning, trespassing and climbing, that was supposed to be a hotel – a five-star hotel, but the owner died during the war. His wife and children disappeared in the first year of the war and they have not been heard from since. It was now their headquarters. There was enough room for everyone. He said this pointing at a huge building that stood like a mountain in the bush that had grown around it.

Around this uncompleted dream were men, boys, women, girls, children, moving about their business. It was a community hidden inside a community. Omonigho’s eyes betrayed no emotion, he just stared ahead. Okereke looked at him for a minute – “he no talk anytin trough out. When him meet Don Papi, he go talk.” He thought to himself. He moved off and beckoned Omonigho along.

Their presence drew no comment. Nobody stopped to stare or point, they were all going about their daily activities. Omonigho saw some women fetching water from a well, while some were cooking some distance off. Three young men were splitting firewood and some children, played football in an open space a few metres down. The place was big and it accommodated a lot of people.

Okereke smiled on seeing the buttocks of a woman bent over, washing yam in a bowl. He got close to her and spanked her buttocks. The woman rose up spitting fire, her fast hand grabbing a stone from the ground. She turned then she smiled, and shook her head.

Beauty: “Okereke, your chi is strong. You dey close to your maker just now, you no know.” She said, as she turned back to washing yam.

Okereke: “I like as you take do just now. Dat means no man go near you for dis yard.” He replied, even as he placed his hands around her waist.

Don Papi: “Okereke, wait until it is night then you and Beauty can do whatever it is your do when decent folks are trying to sleep, and get your sex-crazed self, up here.” He said from above.

Okereke looked up and grinned, then he motioned Omonigho to follow him. They climbed stairs to the top. The railings had not been placed before the construction stopped so, someone had nailed wooden planks to the stairs. Lots of planks had been used because it was a three storey structure and that was a lot of stairs. They climbed to the first floor and passed several doors, each guarded by two men armed with guns. Omonigho’s eyes lighted up on seeing the guns and he straightened from the slouch. He became alert.

Don Papi was not a big man. In fact, he was the shortest man among all the men seated in the room. He was the thinnest but it was obvious that he was the leader. His voice was deep – a surprise considering his size and he spoke fluent English – signs of education. His eyes burned with the smug smile of knowledge. Don Papi was a trickster, a fox, a cunning ruthless killer.

Everybody knew this and everybody respected this, except, maybe Omonigho, who stood staring at the open space where a rail or tempered glass should have stood.

Okereke: “Don dis man buy food for Mami Waterdown and him no fit pay.” He said.

Don Papi watched Omonigho then he stood up and went to stand by him.

Don Papi: “you find the view interesting, right?” he asked

Omonigho: “I am sorry about being unable to pay. I misplaced my money on my way from the prison.” He replied, turning to look at Don Papi.

Don Papi: “ha…these things happen. These are desperate times. You have to keep your properties close. Don’t worry about it.” He replied, patting Omonigho’s shoulder.

Omonigho: “Oh…thank you. Thank you very much.” He replied and turned to leave.

Don Papi: “there’s a little problem though.” He said staring at the crowd below. Omonigho turned back and stared at him. “you see all those people down there and these ones here? They are the broken remnants of a war started by the greed of a select few. These people do not have homes, some do not know where home is. I have to take care of all of them. Food, medicine, clothes, education…” Omonigho raised an eyebrow – “yes education – I run a school here. You see this sort of endeavour puts a huge strain on my pocket and my friend, I am not a rich man. Do you see the problem?” he asked.

Omonigho: “no I don’t.” he replied.

Don Papi: “my dear friend. In this world, nothing is free. You of all people should know this – considering the price you have paid for your country. If I let you go just like that, then the money I spent on you does nothing for my people. That money could have bought a drug, or garri, or fuel. You owe me a debt. Men do not walk away from debts – no sir, they don’t.” he said.

Omonigho: “I am sorry but I have no way of paying you now.” He replied, turning to look at Don Papi.

Don Papi: “off course you don’t – off course you don’t but you will. Yes sir, you will.” He replied, grinning like a wolf. “welcome sir, to Casa De Familia.” He added, his hands spread like an opera conductor.

Okereke chuckled.

Obum led Wale to the car park. Transporters were calling out destinations – Onitsha, Asaba, Agbor, Eku, Sapele, Benin. A few also called out Warri. The place was a beehive of activity. Hawkers and peddlers calling out their goods, transporters seated inside the pool office, placing bets, drinking ogogoro and arguing about politics, football, politics, football and on and on. Obum dodged a puddle then another, Wale tagging along. The rains had been heavy the night before. It would seem that a second flood was to be the outcome but it had stopped finally. The air still had the crisp fresh smell of freshly dugged earth awaiting seeds. The sun was slowly drinking up the moisture in its heat but for that moment, the world felt clean.

They got to a zinc building that stood alone by the edge of a broken fence. The noise of the park sounded like the buzz of bees from where they stood. Obum knocked on the zinc door twice and waited then he knocked once. They stepped back as they heard the door swing on rusty hinges open, to reveal an old woman dressed in rags, her hair covered by a dirty scarf. Her nails were long and black with dirt. She walked back in without a word. Obum turned to look at Wale as they entered the building. Wale’s breath clutched his throat. He had seen fear in his eyes. Obum was scared.

Inside the hut was hot. A fire blazed at a corner. A bent, hammered pot sat on top of the flame – the sound of boiling liquid could be heard coming from it. The room was filled with bones – tiny bones of birds, bats, rats, snakes, cats and some animals that Wale could not identify. His eyes darted about – his fear increasing as he saw a calabash containing a reddish liquid and a red cloth tied around its lip. Then he saw the carved statue standing in a dark corner. The statue’s eyes seemed to be following his every movement. Wale swallowed.

The woman walked to the pot and dipped a spoon into it and stirred.

Obum: “Mama Africa, i…i…ha…ha…ave brought him.” He said, in a stutter.

Mama Africa: “have you told him?” she asked without bothering to turn around.

Obum: “no ma. I have not.” He said, looking at Wale then back at Mama Africa.

Mama Africa: “sit down boys. Let’s eat.” She said, as she picked up some tin plates and ladled some of what was boiling in the pot into the plate. She moved to a pile of bags arranged near the zinc wall. She scattered through it and came up with a loaf of bread. She broke the bread into three parts and placed them on the soup. She gave each boy a plate then she sat down.

Wale looked at the food and gulped. He saw pieces of meat floating inside it then he turned to look at the bones of the animals on the ground – he swallowed and closed his eyes tight. An elbow dug into his ribs and he gasped, opening his eyes. he turned to see Obum’s eyes, glittering with fear. Obum was chewing the food like his life depended on it. He looked at Wale’s plate then at his face then he looked at the woman – ‘eat’, he said silently. Wale ate.

They soon finished eating – the boys sweating profusely. Wale drew the watery catarrh that rolled out of his nostril, back in – the food had been peppery. His mouth still burned with the heat. It had been surprisingly sweet though despite his fear as to the nature of the flesh in it. One had to eat where one saw food – who knows when the next meal will come.

Mama Africa came back and sat down. She opened a pouch tied around her waist and brought out a piece of paper. She tore a rectangular strip out of the paper then she dug into the pouch again and brought out a small parcel of brown paper. She opened it and the scent of dried Indian hemp filled the room. She piled some of the leaves in the paper then proceeded to roll it into a joint. When she was done, she brought out a lighter that had a skull in the place where the fire came out. She lit the weed and took a drag. She sighed and blew purple smoke out of her blackened lips then she passed the weed to Obum. Obum took a drag and passed it back but she shook her head and pointed at Wale. Wale shook his head then he saw Obum’s eyes. again, he saw fear. He quickly took the weed and puffed at it.

Mama Africa: “don’t waste my weed boy.” She said as she worked on another joint – a bigger one this time.

Obum took the weed from Wale and showed him how to drag the smoke into the lungs and exhale. Wale did as he had been shown – the drew the smoke into his lungs, blew it out and then the zinc hut opened and he could see the stars. He chuckled – he could feel the sweat dry on his skin, his saliva congealing like sour milk. He took another drag and he soared out of his body and flew and flew and flew.

He woke up inside a truck bouncing over a bombed out road. His head hit the metallic side and he groaned in pain. He touched the spot but it was not injured. He tried to seat up but the bouncing could not let him find balance. He looked about in the dark and slowly his eyes adjusted. He saw other young boys and girls like him sleeping. He turned his body and his shoulder touched something cold. He turned and he saw a face. The mouth was opened in a scream – eyes wide with the memory of fear. He looked at it, curious then realization dawned… then he screamed. Oh…how he screamed.

Question: what do you think Wale saw? Will Omonigho agree to Don Papi’s demands?

After the success of a number of comedy movies at the box office, it became an established fact that to make money from Nigerian box office, one must tow the comedy lines. This has led to recent churning out of comic movies and humongous box office figures.

However, this didn’t stop the producer of the movie ‘Alter Ego’, Esther Eyibio, from swimming against the tides of the comedy craze going on in Nollywood. Esther with the help of the cast and crew of this movie proved to us that Nigerians aren’t just about laughing in cinemas but they are open to something more intense and thought provoking.

The success and wide reception of the movie proved her right as well. Since it release, Alter Ego, starring Omotola has enjoyed tremendous support and reception and has made decent box office figure.
